With Dan Quinn’s job on the line, the Junkies debate whether Washington's primetime matchup against the undefeated 49ers will be a rallying cry or an absolute blowout.

00:00It's Bish, EB, and JP on an open line Thursday talking about this Commanders game.
00:05We're going to move beyond the play.
00:07It's never going to go away, the discussion about the play, but we're going to start looking
00:11at their game on Monday Night Football against the San Francisco 49ers.
00:16They are a big underdog.
00:18San Francisco right now, 5-0, undefeated, No. 3 scoring offense, No. 3 scoring defense.
00:25Washington, of course, coming off the tie against the New York Giants.
00:29How do they respond with Coach Quinn?
00:32The one thing I would say is Coach Quinn's strength as a coach, it's certainly not clock management.
00:40It's creating the team chemistry, the brotherhood, and rallying the troops.
00:46Us against them.
00:47And so I think there's a possibility he rallies the troops and they fight real hard.
00:52But there also is the possibility, because we've seen this before, we've seen this rodeo
00:56with other coaches where they get embarrassed on Monday Night Football, and that is a definite
01:04possibility.
01:04So we put this up as our junkies poll of the day, brought to you by Surfside Iced Tea and
01:09Vodka, or Surfside Lemonade and Vodka.
01:11This summer, grab a Surfside, your go-to canned cocktail, made with real vodka, only 100 calories,
01:17and zero bubbles.
01:17It's not a seltzer.
01:18It's Surfside.
01:19Must be 21.
01:20Please drink responsibly.
01:21And there are two possibilities here.
01:23How do you expect the Commanders to respond this week when they face the 49ers on Monday
01:28Night Football?
01:29They'll fight for Quinn or blown out and embarrassed?
01:32If it's a binary choice, what do you think is likely to happen on Monday Night Football?
01:39Both.
01:40They're going to fight and get blown out.
01:42They're going to fight and play their best, but they're playing a superior team.
01:46There's only so much you can do.
01:47Brock Purdy's going to pick them apart.
01:49The thing about San Francisco is they just don't have a ton of receiver weapons besides
01:56Evans.
01:58I mean, they've got Kittle, but I'm talking about at receiver because they've lost so many
02:04guys to injury.
02:05And that's not just them.
02:06I just read the Steelers.
02:08Yeah.
02:08They only have three active wide receivers on their roster right now because they've had
02:12so many injuries.
02:13I don't know what San Francisco is going to...
02:14I don't know if they've called up a guy from their practice squad to replace Debo, but
02:18they've got Evans, they've got Jacob Cowan, who hasn't done anything this year.
02:21And they had...
02:22Now they've got Brandon Cooks.
02:25That's all they've got right now.
02:28I think that the script is out, too, on how you beat the Commanders.
02:32I mean, if you look at some of these numbers, well, you're talking about how to attack their
02:38defense.
02:38Yeah.
02:38But the way that you attack the Commanders' offense is you blitz them.
02:44Yeah.
02:44Heavy blitz.
02:45I think Jaden Daniels in one of these metrics, you see all these crazy analytics and metrics,
02:52Jaden Daniels is dead last against the blitz amongst quarterbacks.
02:55It could change.
02:57Oh, yeah.
02:57It could change.
02:58And I do think in overtime, the pass to...
03:00And it was just a simple pass to Terry McLaurin, which ended up being a long gain to start
03:04that last drive.
03:06It was an answer to the blitz.
03:09When you heard Jonathan Vilma on the broadcast, he's like, when are they going to start running
03:12quick passes and screens?
03:14That's how you beat this cover zero blitz that's coming at you.
03:17Dude, it might have been a massive botch hiring David Blau, who wasn't even the quarterback's
03:24coach, but for like an hour.
03:26And then had him leap from assistant quarterback's coach to offensive coordinator in a must-win
03:34year.
03:34It might have been a big-time botch.
03:38Not to say that he's terrible.
03:40It's been five games.
03:41I'm not saying he's terrible, but it's a big ask.
03:44So here are the numbers.
03:45Especially against the teams that they're playing.
03:46And of course, he's going to have a learning curve.
03:48Of course.
03:48Of course.
03:49Here are the numbers.
03:49Right now, fewest pass yards per attempt under pressure this season per next-gen stats.
03:56Jaden Daniels is last.
04:003.2 yards per attempt.
04:01He's tied with Cam Ward.
04:03That's not the company you want to be in.
04:04Jalen Hurts, Dak Prescott, Bo Nix.
04:07That's the bottom five right now facing pressure in terms of pass yards per attempt.
04:12So I would imagine that San Francisco defensively saw what the Giants did, and they're going
04:18to be like, you know what, we might get burned once or twice.
04:21We're going to bring the house.
04:21Because you're going to get burned once or twice, but let's just keep bringing the house.
04:25By and large, the Commander's offense, when you look at them statistically, they have
04:31been actually pretty good pass blocking.
04:33So the way you're going to maybe create pressure is by bringing extra people.
04:37But they've been terrible run blocking.
04:39So that's another issue, that you haven't been able to run the football beyond your quarterback.
04:45Now, Jaden took it into his own hands and his own feet, and two long touchdowns last week.
04:51You would imagine that this week, San Francisco has a spy on him, because the Giants didn't
04:57appear to have a spy.
04:58Yeah.
04:59Fred Warner.
04:59That was their defensive botch.
05:01Like, what were they doing?
05:02Yeah.
05:02But still, once he gets out of the pocket or finds an open spot, there's no defender in
05:07the league that can stop him and catch him in an open field.
05:10Even if they have a spy, he's going to get yards.
05:11He's going to get around them.
05:12He's going to get yards.
05:13All right, 800-636-1067.
05:15I want to hear from you.
05:17It's Open Line Thursday.
05:18You can talk about it whenever you want.
05:19But this is really kind of focused.
05:20How are they going to respond after literally being the embarrassment of the league?
05:27See, it's a binary choice on Twitter.
05:29And again, you can vote out Junk's radio.
05:31I kind of agree with you.
05:32I think that they will fight for Dan Quinn.
05:34They're going to fight.
05:35I think, you know, we can joke about the brotherhood, but that's a real thing for those
05:38guys.
05:38Yeah.
05:39And they do believe in Dan Quinn, and they want to fight for him.
05:42But they just aren't good enough.
05:43I don't know if they get blown out.
05:46Because the Jaden factor, like the last game and a half that he's played, the Cowboys and
05:53this game against the Giants, it kind of gets erased by the last play.
05:57But he's been playing A football.
05:59I don't know if it's an A-plus.
06:01He's been moving the ball.
06:02He's been moving the ball.
06:02No doubt.
06:03But I still need to put up more points.
06:04Let's go to Patrick in Manassas.
06:07800-636-1067.
06:09Patrick, what's up?
06:10How do they respond?
06:12Hey, morning, guys.
06:13Well, the only way they can respond to be any sort of, like, respectable kind of, you
06:18know, or have some respect as Dan Quinn as a coach is to be feisty, to go out there.
06:25I don't think Dan Quinn is nearly as smart as Kyle Shanahan.
06:28And I think the reason why the 49ers, even with all their injuries, are competitive is
06:33because they actually have a coach that knows how to game manage and knows how to end a half.
06:39So, I don't know.
06:40I just think we'll come out there and fight.
06:42I think it's not going to be a blowout.
06:45Actually, I think we could win this.
06:47I mean, we can shut down running games pretty easily.
06:50I mean, I don't know what – has any running back had over 100 yards against us this season?
06:54I think we've been pretty good against that.
06:57That's it.
06:57And we're going to put a lot of pressure on Brock Birdie, and I do think that our defense
07:01will step up.
07:02Well, why do you think we'll put a lot of pressure on Birdie?
07:06We haven't been particularly great at that.
07:09I just think Adapai Ole has to earn his paycheck sometimes.
07:12Well, prior to the Seahawks game – let me just point this out.
07:15I believe, and Jason, you can confirm this, but prior to the Seahawks game, I don't think
07:18Birdie had been sacked.
07:21You can double-check that, but Birdie doesn't take a lot of sacks generally.
07:25Well, he's only been sacked three times.
07:26Was that all?
07:27Yeah, it was all by the Seahawks.
07:28Okay, that makes sense.
07:29So, Seahawks have arguably best defense in the NFL, defending champs, and Birdie was
07:35sacked three times.
07:36So, I don't know if Washington's going to be able to get to him a lot.
07:38Look, Birdie's playing great football.
07:3913 touchdowns with only two interceptions this year.
07:42Yeah, he's completing 70% of his passes.
07:44He's been awesome, no doubt.
07:45He just doesn't have a ton of weapons.
07:47The problem is Kyle Shanahan, even with those three guys, Evans, Kittle, and McCaffrey,
07:53he's just a genius offensively.
07:54He can figure out how to open up those.
07:56I think Durante Jones, I think he's got a chance to be a really good defensive coordinator.
08:01So, I'm okay with him doing as well as he can do.
08:06He's got to change those soft coverages, dropping back to Durant Payne in coverage.
08:10I'm sorry, that's just not going to work.
08:12I don't like, and I think whoever it was we had sharp on, I think he's right.
08:16Like, today in 2026, like, a two-touchdown lead is not like maybe a two-touchdown lead,
08:21you know, 20 years ago.
08:22Yeah.
08:23You know, it's kind of like the NBA almost.
08:25Like, two-touchdown lead can evaporate very fast.
08:28And it did.
08:29Yeah.
08:29But here was the problem.
08:30It was fourth and seven.
08:31Two-touchdown lead, fourth and seven, with seven minutes left.
08:35I mean, the chances of you tying that game up at that particular time and score is pretty low.
08:41Well, I think what they'd say on that play is, I know you don't like the Durant Payne thing,
08:45but by and large, they were aggressive.
08:47All right?
08:47They weren't sitting back.
08:48They were trying to go after the quarterback and make him play.
08:51Yes.
08:51There were so many plays where they were playing nine yards off the guys.
08:53The problem is they were too soft.
08:55The four guys back there in coverage were just too soft.
08:57All right.
08:57Let's go to Eric calling from Kansas City.
09:00Eric, what's up?
09:01You're on the Junkies.
09:03Hey, how y'all doing?
09:04My whole bottom line with a lot of this, I just don't think our coaches are counterpunching,
09:10especially in the second half.
09:11That's why we have no walls.
09:13I don't think they're adjusting.
09:16Yeah.
09:17Yeah.
09:18Good point.
09:19Certainly, Sharp was making that point.
09:21I think we've given up, on average, 10 points in the first half and 19 points in the second half.
09:27But how can coaches go and look at the film?
09:32And this has been five weeks going, all right, we're doing this well in the first half,
09:36but we're not doing this well in the second half and not make adjustments.
09:40You mean from week to week?
09:41Yeah.
09:42What can we do differently that we didn't do well the prior week?
09:46I mean, they're experienced coaches.
09:48Dan Quinn's been around a long time.
09:50Yeah.
09:51Durante's been around a long time.
09:52Durante's been around a long time.
09:53Durante's been around a long time.
09:53He's been around a long time.
09:54He's been around great people.
09:57Let's go to Adam in Reston.
09:59Adam, what's up?
10:02Hey, guys.
10:02I was the wedding DJ for JP's nephew.
10:05And if it's all right with you, I'd like to make a 30-second analogy from the wedding
10:08industry on why we're going to win this weekend.
10:10Okay.
10:11All right.
10:12So I'm the wedding DJ.
10:13I say it all the time.
10:14That's the quarterback.
10:14And the coordinator is the coach, the head coach.
10:17And I can't tell you in my 10-year career how many times the coordinator has told me something
10:21completely wrong in my ear.
10:23Hey, it's time for the cake cutting.
10:24And then I'm like, cool, but there's no knife and fork over there.
10:27It took me a couple times of realizing that I can't rely on my head coach to tell me everything
10:32to rise to the top of my game.
10:35And I think this, as horrible as it was, was just a learning opportunity for Jayden to realize,
10:42dude, if you're going to be the general of the commanders, you better know what you're
10:45doing.
10:46Yeah.
10:47I think you're right.
10:48I don't think you're going to see Jayden make a brain fart like this the rest of his career.
10:51I mean, it's hard.
10:52I mean, it's never happened.
10:53I mean, it's so egregious.
10:54It's easy kind of to say that.
10:56But I do think he'll learn from it.
10:58The one thing that has struck me a little bit is he really didn't own it at the presser
11:04like I would have preferred him to.
11:06Like, he really should have taken the bullet.
11:09Look, he's the quarterback.
11:09One thing you say about Dan Quinn, and you know he's doing it, he's falling on the sword
11:15and he's prefacing everything by saying, it starts with me.
11:18He's not allowing you to criticize Blau.
11:21He's like, look, it starts with me.
11:22It starts with me.
11:23And I respect that.
11:24He ate it.
11:25He ate it and he needed to.
11:27But Jayden didn't.
11:28Jayden was with the we and top down and we got to be.
11:34And I didn't like it in the moment.
11:36Maybe that's just a young QB who hasn't dealt with the media.
11:39Or is he bitter?
11:41Maybe.
11:41He's dealt with the media plenty.
11:43Is there an underlying bitterness that we haven't seen yet that maybe that was the first crack?
11:50I don't think it's the first crack.
11:51I think the LSU thing was the first crack.
11:54Well, I didn't see him lash out.
11:55I think the way that he handled the LSU thing.
11:57No, but he could have handled the presser there better and he was like.
12:03Well, he just didn't want to talk about it.
12:05I didn't think he handled it right.
12:06Right.
12:06I don't think he handled it well.
12:08So that's all I feel.
12:10For the record, I have one nephew.
12:12And as far as I know, he just turned 21 a few days ago.
12:15I was thinking, what nephew?
12:15Happy birthday to Daniel Flame.
12:17So maybe it's like a cousin.
12:19Maybe it's an in-law.
12:19Just like trying to figure it out.
12:21Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
12:22I know that Daniel's not married.
12:24No.
12:25Yeah.
12:25Unless that happened in the last two days.
12:27Yeah.
12:27I don't think so.
12:311-800-636-1067 is the number.
12:34We're talking about the Commanders game.
12:36Monday Night Football.
12:37I think they're going to play well.
12:39I don't think it's going to be a blowout.
12:40Is it going to be balls to the wall?
12:42Guys flying around?
12:44Yeah, I think so.
12:45Great first quarter.
12:45It's not going to be a dud.
12:46These are NFL players.
12:47They forget about the week prior.
12:49That's not going to be lingering in their brain.
12:51Yeah, but we've seen blowouts.
12:53We've seen blowouts, but I just think if you're getting a lot of these guys back,
12:57I just think you still have professionals out there, especially veteran receivers.
13:02I think Jaden will play well.
13:04I'm not saying they're going to win.
13:05I'm going to pick San Francisco to win.
13:06I just don't think it's going to be a 38-17 type of game.
