00:00Hello, welcome along to your latest update from the Met Office. A lot of weather going on in the
00:05next few days. Lots of unsettled weather, areas of low pressure coming in off the Atlantic. The
00:10first one, of course, Storm Austin, named by the Met Office a couple of days ago. Here it is earlier
00:15on this morning on the satellite sequence, really undergoing some rapid deepening as it's approaching
00:20the UK today. Ahead of it, though, a little ridge of high pressure giving us a quieter period
00:24as this area of low pressure from yesterday is still hanging around across the far northeast
00:29here, bringing some fairly brisk winds and fairly persistent rain, actually, across the northern
00:32isles this afternoon. Gradually easing, could see some wind gusts around 55 miles an hour
00:36in exposed areas. In between, a slice of dry, calm weather for much of the UK. A few showers
00:42in some of these western areas coming into northwest England, for example, one or two into
00:46western northwest Scotland. But yeah, down towards the southwest, clouds thickening and rain eventually
00:50arriving across the southwest of England this afternoon, eventually getting into south Wales
00:54as we head towards the tail end of the afternoon and into the evening. But there'll be some sunshine
00:58in between and temperatures around average for the time of the year, so typically 10 to 13
01:03degrees for many. That's 14 or 15 down in the far south and southwest. Now back to storm
01:09Austin. That's the first of our several areas of low pressure to be worried about. Here it
01:13comes through the course of this evening and overnight. So ahead of it, we'll get strengthening
01:16southerly winds developing later this evening and through the overnight period. So onshore winds
01:20along the English Channel. And then as the track of Austin runs through the English Channel,
01:24very strong northwesterly winds rapidly picking up on the backside of the system. So West
01:29Wales, 60, 70 mile an hour winds. And then across parts of Devon, Cornwall and the Isles
01:33of Scilly, 70 to 80, maybe even 85 mile an hour winds for a time across the Isles of Scilly
01:38at the end of tonight into Friday morning. And even through the day tomorrow, as the low
01:42clears the way to the east, we've still got pretty brisk northwesterly winds across England
01:46and Wales. Still likely to see gusts inland, 40 to 50 miles an hour. So it will be windy for
01:50quite some time over the course of tonight and into tomorrow. These are the current Met
01:54Office warnings out in force then. This yellow warning coming into force at midnight across
01:59parts of West and South Wales, across southern England as well. The amber warning down across
02:02parts of Devon and Cornwall comes into force at 1am. So the detail of Storm Austin through
02:07the overnight period. Heavy rain then spreading its way northwards across England and Wales.
02:11Wet and windy, of course, in the southwest. In stark contrast, though, much of Scotland quiet
02:15overnight. Light winds, clear skies for much of the night. And it will actually be quite
02:19cold across northeast Scotland. We could see some frost, temperatures down to maybe minus
02:23three, minus four in more rural spots here. But obviously further south with the cloud,
02:27wind and rain, it will be markedly milder. Low temperatures, typically high single figures
02:32or even low double figures in the far south. So a very unsettled Friday in Prospect. This
02:38rain fairly heavy and persistent, working its way northwards across northern England into
02:41Scotland, wrapping back round into some western areas for a time. And then all of this gradually
02:47shunting eastwards through the day. So in between, there will be a little window of opportunity
02:51for some brightness across eastern England for a time. But the wet and windy weather continuing
02:55to track east as we go through the course of Friday, which means actually some western
02:59areas, parts of southwest Wales, southwest England and Northern Ireland, yes, blustery.
03:03But even here, as the winds start to calm down through the afternoon, we'll see some sunshine
03:07breaking through before the day is over. But I think temperature is pretty academic, really.
03:13We're looking at, again, high single figures across parts of Scotland, low double figures
03:17elsewhere. And actually some of this rain falling as snow above 700 metres or so across parts
03:22of Scotland as well. So really feeling cold underneath all that cloud, wind and rain.
03:26And that rain really becomes quite persistent through the latter stages of Friday across east
03:30and southeast Scotland, perhaps even into northeast England as well. Elsewhere, a slightly quieter
03:35interlude coming in from the west as we go through Saturday, a Friday night into Saturday.
03:40So looking at some of the rainfall totals, this is another aspect of Storm Austin, causing
03:44a little bit of concern across southern and eastern Scotland. We could see quite a bit
03:47of rain here, 20 to 40 millimetres quite widely, but potentially 60 to 80 millimetres,
03:52particularly across southeast Scotland, maybe also into parts of Northumberland. So a metoffish
03:57yellow warning here also for rain as we go through the course of Friday. Some surface water
04:00issues and possibly even some river issues as we go into the weekend as well. We say goodbye
04:06then to Storm Austin on Friday evening, a very brief transient ridge of high pressure.
04:10But then all eyes out west, the next named system, Storm Bulo, named by the Met Office
04:14today, will bring wet and windy weather across the country on Saturday. And then strong winds
04:19following behind. You see the tightly packed ice bars there as we go later Saturday and on
04:23into Sunday. There are Met Office warnings already in force for wind across northern parts
04:28of the UK. You can find out more on those on our web and app. And there's much more detail
04:32on the impacts expected from Storm Bulo elsewhere on our YouTube channel. See you later.
