Euclid was built to map distant galaxies, but moving-object software found a comet streak in its survey images. ESA announced C/2026 S1 (Euclid), its first previously unknown comet, on October 19, 2026. The discovery used images from September 16–24; catalogue checks and follow-up observations led to Minor Planet Center confirmation on October 8. A galaxy survey had revealed a new Solar System object.
