Could a swept beam make a light spot move across the Moon faster than light? In an idealised thought experiment, the illuminated pattern can sweep that quickly because different photons hit different places. No object travels sideways between the spots, and no message passes from one patch to the next faster than light. The pattern moves; matter and information obey the usual limit.
