00:10Welcome back to From the South as we
00:12retake the highlight topic of the day
00:15and that is Brazil. In this post-election
00:18victory for president Lula we have a
00:21very special guest with us at this hour
00:23Ergon Körler who holds a bachelor's
00:26degree and also a postgraduate
00:29certificate from USP also a master's
00:32degree from Fundação Getúlio Vargas and
00:36also a specialization from the
00:38University of Barcelona. Ergon, welcome
00:41to From the South. Thank you very much
00:43for joining us at this important hour
00:45for Brazilians.
00:49Thank you, it's a pleasure because now we
00:52have something to reflect more about
00:55Brazil and to see more than on elections
00:58on disputes but what we are going to do in
01:00the next four years. It's a pleasure.
01:04Ergon, precisely in this context what
01:07conclusions can we withdraw from this victory of Lula in the
01:12round of elections?
01:16of course it was the people because in the
01:19first round we had something really bad for the campaign of Lula which is for the
01:25first time in the elections he was in the second position during the first round
01:32and Flávio was in the first position with more than two million votes ahead. So in the context of Brazil
01:39it was like a rule every time that we have someone in the first place it will end the elections
01:46in the first place during the second round.
01:48So this is the first time in our democracy that someone who was in the first round in the second
01:55position won the elections with more even even with more than four million votes in the second round.
02:02So it was the people. We had a lot of mobilizations here in Brazil. We had a lot of movements
02:08trying to get the campaign to the streets to the social media and to talk with people to present what
02:15was bolsonarismo in the last elections with Jair and now with Flávio Bolsonaro.
02:20So, of course, it was the people carrying up the Lula's campaign here in Brazil.
02:27Along with the people, what other decisive factors are behind Lula's historic victory in this round of elections, this democratic
02:36process in Brazil?
02:41Lula presented a lot of public policies during the last years, but specifically this year he was presenting more public
02:49policies.
02:50For example, to have bus for free during the weekend, for example, to have increase in our programs of social
02:59benefits, for example.
03:01So we had a lot of public policies that, of course, increased Lula potentially to win the elections, but we
03:08had some specific segments in Brazil that helped a lot to Lula.
03:12For example, the elderly people, so we have the guys with 70 plus, we call 70 plus in Brazil, which
03:20is something, it's the first time in our democracy that we had a lot of 70 plus going out to
03:28the vote to go to representing democracy.
03:31Because in Brazil, who has 70 plus, does not have to vote, it's not like obligatory, mandatory to vote.
03:42So it is like optional.
03:44So we had a large mobilization, the entire country to 70 plus, get out the vote and go to represent
03:51democracy.
03:51The result is a lot of videos of older guys and going out, going to the vote with the family,
04:00happy, voting to Lula.
04:02So it is something important, but more than the older we had results with the young people.
04:08So guys with 16, 17, 18 years old mobilized a lot on the social media.
04:15So basically those two segments, the 70 plus and the teenagers, in a way, they made a lot of difference
04:23during these elections.
04:25But more than just age, we have a region here in Brazil, which is northeast, which is historically is more
04:33petite, which is more left-wing.
04:36But this election, they mobilized it even more.
04:39The abstention rate here and northeast was the lower in the entire time of our democracy.
04:48So the mobilization of younger people, the mobilization of elder people and the mobilization of northeast, of course, was the
04:56result that we saw yesterday on the elections here in Brazil.
04:59Thank you, Ayrgen. Thank you very much for your analysis and also for helping us understand the reasons behind this
05:07historic victory for Lula.
