00:00Third and seven. Pressure on Cousins. Sacked at the 40-yard line.
00:07The far as Buckner gets in there.
00:10Now, back to Willard and Dibbs on 95.7 The Game.
00:16Nice pick last night.
00:17Thank you. Trying to stay hot.
00:21It's funny because I pick every game in a pool that I'm in,
00:25and I've been awful, like dreadful, beyond bad,
00:30and yet every pick I give on the air, I win.
00:34Not everyone, but I've been hot on the air.
00:36No, it's interesting.
00:38Are things going well or are things going poorly?
00:41Isn't it interesting what one day can do?
00:46So you have a terrible weekend picking, but we got the Monday night.
00:51The 49ers are coming off a loss, but you got DeForest Buckner.
00:54We went into the weekend telling them, well, the Valkyries are going to,
00:57oh, that was a nice try.
00:59Hold on a second.
01:00They're playing for a championship with French toast on Thursday morning.
01:05Right.
01:06So there's that.
01:07Nice job Valks last night.
01:08And the Warriors are going to go 0-82, and then you go to Denver.
01:12Like, you never win in Denver.
01:14No.
01:14Like, it's Denver.
01:15And then Yaksmania.
01:17They're going to go 79-3, and they've got the next big thing,
01:21and he's going to be rookie of the year.
01:22And the MVP.
01:24And the MVP.
01:26And DPOI.
01:27So things change in a hurry.
01:29Right.
01:29I wonder if the Sharks will win the cup tonight, but we'll see.
01:34Do you remember this?
01:36DeForest Buckner is a Niner.
01:38Fourth round pick.
01:39The Niners pulled the trigger today.
01:418-8, 9-5-7, 9-5-70.
01:43Kyle Shanahan on the TK show.
01:47This was recorded in July of 2024.
01:54It's a throwback?
01:55Over two years ago, Kyle was reliving the decision to let DeForest Buckner go,
02:07essentially.
02:09Let him become an Indianapolis Colt, or they traded him, as it turned out.
02:15They traded him to get the pick that they used on Javon Kinlaw.
02:18Whoops.
02:19So here's Kyle and TK talking that out.
02:23The Buckner thing was one of the hardest things I've ever gone through.
02:25I love DeForest Buckner.
02:27We don't want to get rid of him at all.
02:28But we're trying to budget a certain amount of money.
02:31And then when it gets to a certain price, and we know what the options are,
02:34you've got to choose paying buck, whatever it was,
02:37which is a few more than what we were willing.
02:39Which, all right, let's go there.
02:40Guys, what does that mean?
02:41Well, you've got to get rid of Jimmy Ward and Armstead.
02:43Ooh, that's a tough decision.
02:45Well, I don't know where I'm going to go with that decision.
02:47What if we told you, if you get rid of Buck, you get Jimmy Ward, Armstead,
02:51and the 13th pick in the draft?
02:54Man, that makes sense from an organizational standpoint.
02:56Man, I don't want to lose Buck.
02:57He's like, everything you want for a niner.
03:00But those are the tough decisions you've got to make.
03:02And that does make sense.
03:04You can go either way.
03:05But I understand that decision.
03:07And it had nothing to do with Buck.
03:08That just had to do with what we were trying to build
03:10and how many more people we could get.
03:12And we think it's three to one.
03:13Those aren't easy, but I don't shy away from that.
03:16So Kyle Shanahan calls that one of the hardest things he's ever had to do.
03:22We don't want to lose Buck.
03:25I love DeForest Buckner.
03:28One of the last things on earth we wanted to do was lose DeForest Buckner.
03:33But we're budgeting, and you have to make hard choices.
03:38That's a choice they made.
03:40I'm sure they've sat around over glasses of wine and regretted it.
03:45Over the last handful of years, maybe today makes that decision a little bit easier.
03:51DeForest Buckner's back.
03:52Yeah, and it makes it easier because, you know, ultimately you had to make that choice.
03:56And he was talking about Eric Armstead.
03:58And I think that neither one of those guys were players that they drafted
04:03because his first draft was the year after that the Niners took DeForest Buckner in 2016.
04:07So, yeah, the numbers game, and you always talk about cap schmap,
04:12and you're right for the most part, but you get into that spot where if you lose DeForest Buckner
04:17and you can keep two of the guys and then get a first-round pick and stuff,
04:21then it's kind of something that you have to look at and say,
04:24all right, it's probably worth it.
04:26And it would be a lot better if they would have nailed the pick, but they didn't in 2020.
04:31They did not.
04:32They did not.
04:32And nailing the pick is hard.
04:35You're never, you're never certain.
04:38Do you know what I mean?
04:40I'm sure the Seahawks were looking at Jadarian Price going,
04:43come on, man, like, we love this kid.
04:46This kid out of Notre Dame, he's going to be a stud.
04:49And you know what?
04:50They might still be right.
04:52He's played like two and a half games in his life.
04:54It's early.
04:54He fumbled a couple of times and he got hurt, and he's been put on the shelf.
04:58I bet he's going to be back this week.
05:01If not, he's going to be back the week after.
05:04He is slated to play when the 49ers and Seahawks see each other again,
05:09but they tried to let Kenneth Walker go in free agency
05:13and draft Jadarian Price is blown up in their face.
05:17It happens.
05:18It happens to good organizations.
05:20But to me, this is not only a great move for the 49ers this year
05:25in bolstering who they are, what they can achieve,
05:29and signaling also to the team and the fans,
05:32we are all in on winning a Super Bowl this year.
05:35But it only adds, and I don't know if fans care about this or not.
05:39I do.
05:40This is adding to what is becoming for me one of the most feel-good teams
05:48in the history of this city.
05:51Like, this is, you already had an abundance of individuals.
05:55You notice when you talk 49er football, all you need is their first names?
06:01For sure.
06:03For sure.
06:03And I know that if you're a super fan, that's true for all your teams.
06:06But you can go into a bar and just say Fred and George and Brock,
06:12and you can just...
06:14Steph and Draymond.
06:15Exactly.
06:15Because these are...
06:16Buster and so many.
06:17These are those kinds of players who have achieved so much.
06:21And now, though, you start bringing back the likes of Debo and Dray and Defoe,
06:28and you put all this together, not only what they've achieved,
06:31which is everything but the ring, but also kind of, you know,
06:36what Stiney was talking about, the leaders they are,
06:38the way that they represent the team and the Bay Area and all of that.
06:43I am finding this to be turning into what is almost an emotional experience season
06:50for 49er fans.
06:52Because it's not just, hey, I think we've got one of the best teams
06:55in the league this year.
06:56It's also, like, this huge shot to get all of those dudes a ring.
07:03All of them.
07:04Think about that.
07:06And Defoe might only be here for 10 games.
07:08That might be it.
07:10That's it.
07:11And then the playoffs, whatever's coming after those 10 games.
07:14But that might be it.
07:15But think about this, man.
07:17If in one swoop, if in one swoop, and I'll throw Christian and Trent
07:21and Juice in there too, but if in one swoop all of these people
07:26who have such a relationship with this fan base could get a ring,
07:30I'm telling you, man, it would feel like a ring plus to me.
07:35Yeah, it would be awesome.
07:36I mean, especially because DeForest Buckner was drafted here,
07:38and now that he gets to come back home and all the rest of it,
07:42that would be, you know, kind of special and awesome.
07:44And the Dre Greenlaw piece, certainly, and the Debo Samuel piece,
07:47even though he's been out now for a small handful of games,
07:51I do think that that becomes a part of the, for me anyway,
07:55the exit strategy, I guess, part of it.
07:57After it's all said and done, if you win it, it's like, oh, my God,
08:01do you want it, the parade?
08:02And then, for me, you look at exactly what that means for George and Christian
08:07and, you know, Kyle and all the rest of it, you know, both Kyles, Shanahan and Juszczyk.
08:11Then it becomes, I think, a little bit more of that part of it.
08:15But for right now, get a good player in who can help you.
08:17No doubt.
08:18No doubt.
08:18And this one, this was one of those, I give Bonte a little bit of credit.
08:22What week was it that he said this?
08:25It was like week two or three.
08:28He's like, I'm kind of looking at the Colts.
08:30And I don't think they're going to be very good this year.
08:32And how fun would it be to get DeForest Buckner back?
08:36And with each Colts loss, I kept looking at him going, man, that had a good idea.
08:41And then I'm like, that's a really good idea.
08:45And then I think we got to last week, and it was just a terribly kept secret.
08:50Defoe is in front of his locker after every loss.
08:52Right.
08:52Like, with everything but a sign on his forehead that said, John, please get me out of here.
08:57It was so obvious that this was a perfect fit for all hands.
09:03And here it is.
09:05It's reality during the bye week.
09:06And he gets to land with the 49ers and do whatever it is they're going to do in preparations this
09:13week.
09:13And hit the ground running with the full practice schedule next week.
09:16And next week, man, Levi's Stadium, the Raiders in town, and what could be a cavalry of acquisitions for the
09:2649ers if you count the people returning from injury.
09:31I'd love to see the Raiders stop that group.
09:34I'd love to see them try.
09:36Defoe, Bosa, Mike Evans, Debo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson, Marquis Siegel, and more, potentially all on the field in a week
09:46and a half.
09:47It's going to be tough.
09:48And I just think about the defensive part of it.
09:51And I'm looking at pro football focus.
09:52And he is, DeForest Buckner's got four sacks.
09:56And he's second among interior defensive linemen this year in sacks.
10:00And, you know, last game, you had two pressures.
10:02You had no sacks of Michael Penick.
10:04So, yeah, I don't think that for DeForest Buckner, it's going to be that much of a learning curve to
10:10come in and do what you do.
10:13And, you know, ultimately, as a defensive lineman, interior especially, it's, you know, either this gap or that gap.
10:19Like, what are we doing?
10:20And how do we go about doing it?
10:21I got to tell you something, bud.
10:22I just opened up an internet window.
10:26Okay.
10:26I went to ESPN.com and pulled up the Niners depth chart because I wanted to play around with this
10:30defensive line a little bit.
10:33ESPN, Johnny on the spot.
10:36Right defensive tackle starter, DeForest Buckner.
10:40It's already up.
10:41It's already up.
10:43Let's talk about this group a little bit.
10:45There are a number of players that I think as fans we have felt really, really good about.
10:53Good young players on the defensive line.
10:56I don't know if any of them are even going to start.
10:59Is Micah Williams a starter on this team?
11:02Probably.
11:03Is Grayson Houlton a starter on this team?
11:06No.
11:06Is Romello Height a starter on this team?
11:08I mean, if you want to go Bosa and Williams outside and Osa and DeForest Buckner inside, like, that's your
11:16four.
11:16And if you want to throw a fifth in there?
11:18Well, don't forget Keon White.
11:20I mean, Keon White has been a more down player than Mike Hale.
11:24Mike Hale's only played two games back.
11:26Right.
11:26He's still working his way up.
11:28I think that the returns on how he looks early on are incredibly encouraging.
11:34But, like, I'm a Niner fan.
11:36You're a Niner fan.
11:37We know how this feels.
11:39The thought process going into the second half of a season like this is not, can we get a good
11:44player?
11:44It's like, can we have enough players so that when the inevitable injury happens, do we still have a good
11:51group?
11:52The backup defensive line for the Niners is not bad.
11:56The backup, okay, not the front four, the next four, is Mike Hale Williams, Grayson Halton, Sebastian Valdez, and Romello
12:05Hite.
12:05But the starting group is Keon White, Osa Odigizuwa, DeForest Buckner, and Nick Bosa, at least as it's listed right
12:12now.
12:13And nobody's an every down guy, and so it's a full rotation.
12:17Probably not the greatest day for Sebastian Valdez.
12:20I know everyone else is celebrating, but whatever.
12:23So back to the practice squad for sure.
12:24But we haven't even brought up James Thompson Jr., undrafted free agent, who they love, and they've been getting good
12:31returns on him when he played.
12:32He's already suffered a high ankle sprain this year.
12:34We haven't brought up C.J. West, who is supposed to also be back coming up next week.
12:41Yeah, I mean, maybe.
12:42Maybe.
12:42Right.
12:42That's what Kyle said.
12:44You know what I mean?
12:45And you've got Alfred Collins as well, another guy who is supposed to be, quote, back.
12:49And so I think both of those guys can get, you know, slow played, and same thing with Thompson.
12:55Like, he can go back to the practice squad or Valdez.
12:57Collins is a much more, you know, that's a longer proposition.
13:00But I know Kyle yesterday said that C.J. West is someone who could return in the game against the
13:07Raiders.
13:07I think the point we're getting at is the 49ers and this front office has never minced words about this.
13:17They build their defense from the defensive line back.
13:21And I have long felt like the key to defense in the NFL is the pass rush.
13:27It's why edge rushers are the highest paid dudes on the defense.
13:31Because if you can pressure the quarterback, those people in the secondary are going to look so much better so
13:37quickly.
13:37And we're seeing it this year.
13:39The secondary and the safeties, they've looked better.
13:41So what they are doing is they are at least attempting to build a group that is just got a
13:49ton of talent and a ton of depth.
13:51And they are going to go get that quarterback.
13:54And they are going to force second and long and third and medium and third and long.
13:58And then this group, unlike last year, gets to do it with Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw behind them, shooting
14:06at the gaps, toss in a little bit of Jaden Duggar as well.
14:09And wait till you see how good Renardo Green gets.
14:13Wait till you see how good Jair Brown gets.
14:15Yeah, all of them.
14:16When you can do all of this.
14:17Look how good Matt Mustafa already looks.
14:19And Siegel's coming back too.
14:21I get it.
14:23Get Upton Stout back in there.
14:24I don't feel like they've got a fourth corner right now.
14:26But they're trying to build a whole brigade of just absolute meanness on the defensive line.
14:35And I just, I don't know how you can't love it.
14:38This is exactly what this organization loves to do.
14:41And I think that they're probably not done yet.
14:43And I do like the idea about the depth because, you know, DeForest Buckner has been so good.
14:48And Bosa is a question mark.
14:50And Osa's been mostly good.
14:52And then you've got young guys who've actually stepped up and played very well.
14:55And you mentioned the linebackers behind them and the secondary.
14:58I think that the secondary kind of got a little bit exposed in the game against Atlanta.
15:03In part because you had no pressure.
15:05You had no sacks.
15:06You had no hits on Michael Penix.
15:08And so you've got guys back there who are running around and trying to defend.
15:12And they don't have the same ability to do that.
15:15And so, yeah, maybe DeForest Buckner is the real game changer for you.
15:19Listen, it can only help.
15:21It can only help.
15:22And is he the first rounder that the Niners had, you know, five, six years ago?
15:27Maybe not.
15:28But still incredibly productive.
15:31Trustworthy, obviously.
15:33And a lift.
15:34A lift to a locker room that has achieved 6-1, is coming off of a loss,
15:40and probably also thinking to themselves, damn it, you know,
15:43if we could just get everybody healthy,
15:44which is the same thing that the 49ers feel every year.
15:47So I've got to think it's a huge lift over the bye week as they kind of lick wounds,
15:53try to get healthy, use that loss as motivation.
15:59It's a – I mean, there's a hundred ways to say this.
16:02This is an awesome day.
16:03It's an awesome day.
16:05They're just getting started.
16:06It's a message to the fans as well.
16:08You know, how many people have called this show the last two weeks being like,
16:13they better be all in.
16:14They better be all in.
16:15Right.
16:15This is all in.
16:17And that's why I don't think they're done.
16:19I don't think they're done.
16:20No, it's the start of all in.
16:22And you mentioned, I think it's still, what, 16 days until the deadline or, you know,
16:26two weeks or, you know, whatever the date is.
16:29I think it's actually the – I think it was the 15th.
16:31Two weeks from today, I thought.
16:33Is that right?
16:33On a Tuesday.
16:34Let me look at that.
16:35That sounds about right.
16:36And so, you know, you look at where you are going into the bye, and now you've got DeForest Buckner
16:41coming out of the bye,
16:42and you've got a game against the Raiders.
16:44And I think it's after the Raider game, between the Raider game and the next game is when the deadline
16:49is.
16:50Two weeks from today.
16:51Yeah.
16:51It's two weeks from today.
16:52Tuesday, November 10th at 4 o'clock Eastern time.
16:56So you've got the Colts who already have, like, rolled up their garage door, you know, shout out R&S.
17:02And so their garage sale is on, and you saw it this morning where you had Quentin Nelson get dealt
17:07right away.
17:08And so, oh, I'm sure every team was calling Indianapolis saying, hey, who else is available in that driveway of
17:14yours?
17:14And so, you know, you might be able to pick more people off of the Colts.
17:18But the other point is, between now and two weeks from now, what other teams are going to roll up
17:24that door and say, you know what?
17:25We're about ready to start selling stuff.
17:27There's going to be at least one team, if not more.
17:30There'll be more.
17:31Like, from who we've talked to, it's hysterical to me that apparently the Los Angeles Chargers still think they're just
17:39not there yet.
17:41Like, yeah, we got to, okay, do you need to be 0-7?
17:44Do you need to be 0-8?
17:46Like, what are you doing?
17:48But anyway, the Chargers will be one.
17:51But what's their GM situation?
17:53Is their GM, like, somebody who is going to get fired?
17:56I don't think he's on the way out.
17:58The Colts just fired theirs.
17:59Right, which is why I think that they became much more of a garage sale team.
18:03And I think about the Jets a lot because the Jets have Aaron Glenn, who is trying to fight for
18:09his life right now.
18:10So I don't know if he or the GM are going to be looking to absolutely gut the thing.
18:14Like, the Colts are a classic example where, you know, the GM is fired and the coach is probably going
18:20to get fired and he'll get a job somewhere else.
18:24Oh, go ahead.
18:25No, they're a team, I think, that is ripe for, like, a true garage sale.
18:29Well, they always are.
18:30But, yeah, I know that people then go to Garrett Wilson.
18:33Again, he's been signed up long term and he's young.
18:36Sometimes I think it's funny when people are like, well, that team should rebuild.
18:39And it's like, so they should get rid of their young, already paid, like, no, that's who you want as
18:46part of the rebuild.
18:47Like, if I'm the Jets, I want Garrett Wilson on my team.
18:50I need a quarterback.
18:52So let's get a bunch of draft picks.
18:53And they have a bunch.
18:55God, they took the Colts to school on Sauce Gardner a year ago.
18:59I actually saw that earlier.
19:00They've got the Colts first round pick.
19:02Correct.
19:03So today, they're thinking, yeah, keep trading people, Colts.
19:06It's not the only thing they've got.
19:07Right now, if the draft were set right now, the Jets have three of the top 11 picks.
19:11Incredible.
19:12So go get a quarterback.
19:13Go do your thing.
19:14But I'd make Garrett Wilson a part of it.
19:16I'm more interested in names like Will McDonald, who was a rumored target of the 49ers last year.
19:22The Chargers GM is Joe Hortiz.
19:25He's only been there for a little bit over two years.
19:29I doubt that he's on the block.
19:31But anyway, in looking at who the potential targets are, yeah.
19:37Like, go see who – do the Dolphins have any veteran expiring people?
19:43Do the Jets?
19:44Do the Chargers?
19:45The Colts are already – they've already sent half their guys out.
19:48But there definitely could be more.
19:51You know, call Sala with the Titans.
19:53What's going on out there?
19:55That's definitely a target.
19:57I don't know what they're thinking about themselves, but especially after last night.
20:02And this comes over to the NFC, and therefore, it becomes way less likely that these are trade partners with
20:08the 49ers.
20:09But if I'm the Eagles, I'm taking advantage of this.
20:12I'm selling everything – like, everything.
20:15Like, start over.
20:17This season's lost.
20:18We don't even know who our quarterback's going to be going forward, but he's not back this year.
20:23Tanner McKee, what are we – like, come on.
20:25Devontae Smith can't get on the field.
20:27That – Saquon injured again.
20:29In, out, blah, blah, blah, blah.
20:29Saquon Barkley played 10 snaps and had 15 fantasy points.
20:33Right.
20:34Think about that.
20:34And two injuries.
20:35Again.
20:36Right.
20:36But, I mean, he'll be back.
20:38But just the idea that he played 10 snaps and he was able to get 15 fantasy points, he is
20:44amazing.
20:44And so, if they want to strip the whole thing down, yeah, I get that.
20:47But I don't think that Howie Roseman really thinks about it in those terms.
20:51And unless you want to fire Sirianni, and I guess they might, then I don't think that they would be
20:56a fire sale team.
20:57And honestly, at 2-5, they've got 10 more games to go.
21:02They're not out of it in that division.
21:04No, I mean, yeah, Tampa Bay, I think, was a target when they were 0-4, but now they're 2
21:10-5.
21:11And actually, they're a breath away from being 3-4.
21:14They've all – like, they've won two.
21:16They lost one in overtime.
21:17Baker Mayfield is back.
21:19Best point differential in the division.
21:21Yeah, and their division stinks.
21:22So, you can win that thing with eight wins.
21:23So, maybe they're off the table a little bit.
21:26And the Cardinals are just not going to be – I don't think they're a trade partner with the 49ers
21:30because they're in the same division.
21:32Right.
21:32But that's the list.
21:34That's the list of teams from which you can pluck.
21:37So, it's basically the Colts is, I think, the list.
21:40Because I don't think the Jets are in that spot just yet.
21:43And, you know, maybe it's Miami too, but I don't even know if Miami has any player that you would
21:48actually covet.
21:49Probably not.
21:50I still think the Chargers are a possibility.
21:52I think the Chargers are a possibility.
21:54But, yeah, we'll see.
21:56And then there's the weird ones.
21:58Like, Brian Thomas on a winning team.
22:01Right, the one-off.
22:01But just like, we don't want this guy anymore.
22:04That's certainly a possibility.
22:06But I don't think the Jags are quite there yet.
22:08Just like that.
22:08Yeah.
