The National Democratic Alliance secured a 4-0 clean sweep in the Karnataka Legislative Council elections across four constituencies, dealing a blow to the ruling Congress. The Bharatiya Janata Party bagged the Northeast Teachers, West Graduates, and Southeast Graduates seats, while its ally Janata Dal (Secular) won the Bengaluru Teachers constituency. With the polling conducted through paper ballots instead of electronic voting machines, the Bharatiya Janata Party mocked the Congress and Rahul Gandhi, asserting that voters continue to back the NDA regardless of whether paper ballots or EVMs are used. The party also targeted Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on social media following the outcome. Responding to the results, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge maintained that while the party accepts democratic outcomes and will draw lessons, the defeat does not serve as a mandate on the performance of the state government due to the limited and specialised nature of the electorate comprising teachers and graduates.

00:00Meanwhile, for Karnataka MLC elections, is it a turning wave that is reflective of what Karnataka's political equations have become?
00:08NDA has a 4-0 sweep in Karnataka MLC elections.
00:12The Bharatiya Janata Party has taken to mocking Rahul Gandhi and DK Shivtumar government after the clean sweep.
00:18BJP has taken to social media site and they say,
00:21DKS, it's done bro!
00:24Clearly, this slogan and mention by Salman Khan has gone from Sonam Wangchuk to CEC Gyanesh Kumar and now the
00:32BJP using it against the Congress Party.
00:34BJP says Rahul Gandhi can't even win postal ballot elections.
00:38This is a very significant dig, ladies and gentlemen.
00:40What has the Congress Party been asking?
00:42Get rid of the EVMs, return to the ballot paper era.
00:46BJP is saying, but Rahul Gandhi can't even win in postal ballot elections.
00:51Ballot or EVM, people are choosing the BJP.
00:55So what were the results like?
00:56BJP winning 3, JDS 1, Congress has drawn a 0.
01:00Congress concedes, says must learn lessons.
01:03But the Congress is defined, saying does not reflect the mandate.
01:07This is the Karnataka Legislative Council elections, 4-0.
01:11NDA has got all four seats.
01:12BJP secured Northeast teachers, West graduates and Southeast graduate seats.
01:16While the ally, JDS, flipping the Bengaluru teachers constituency.
01:19The police have, the police were, the elections that were held were via ballot papers and not EVMs.
01:28Let's listen into reactions coming in.
01:31Dekashri Kumar has given the statement, which he did, has all been cheated today.
01:36And the Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi Ji, has given the statement of the SIR and EVM machine.
01:43He was about to say many different states, so they were trying to say a lot.
01:48But today, BALADTKAKA will be the same on the ballot.
01:51This is the trial of the party.
01:52In this trial, the NDA party has had a great victory.
01:55In this trial, the EU or EVM machine, or a ballot.
01:58Both people have provided the NDA party.
02:00They have to say, that NERINDRA, Modi Ji, will be the same.
02:02He is also a complete victory.
02:05And we have done the victory.
02:15it is not as per expectation but it's a democratic system and if the people have chosen so be it
02:23there will be lessons learned and we'll be pulling up our socks but this is not a reflection of the
02:29performance of the government because it's a very very closed knit
02:32uh group that votes for the teachers uh constituency and generally the people who contest are either
02:39from the are in the bay are from the same background so i don't think it's a mandate
02:45on the performance of the government but yes there are lessons to be learned
02:50india today's editor nagarjun dwarkhanath is joining me for the latest nagarjun tell me more about
02:55what do you think then this represents as priyanka says otherwise it doesn't represent the mandate
03:00is this a surprise and a big victory that should be seen for the nda in karnataka
03:09when nda definitely will celebrate this because in the recent three years past they have lost all
03:14the by-elections of the assembly and this was the first win that they had remember just two three
03:18months back the mlas of the bjp also cross-voted for the congress in the uh election of mlcs so
03:23this
03:24is the first such uh you know victory that the bjp has got and they have all the rights to
03:28celebrate
03:28this likely they're doing it so as well in karnataka while this i don't say it's an embarrassment to
03:34the congress party i would definitely say this is a wake-up call to the congress party in karnataka
03:40this is the first election on paper that happened after dk shukumar took the chair of the chief
03:45minister yes the mls had cross-voted but these are the voters of this constituency like rightly said
03:52priyankar guess it is a closely knit uh voters four constituency two teachers and two graduates
03:58in karnataka so the voters were just thousands of people who voted for the candidate as well
04:03and which four zero three to the bjp one to the jds so nda four congress zero and that's the
04:09big mandate
04:09that's the uh the voters have given definitely this is not an embarrassment per se because this is a
04:16close-knit group but yes it's a wake-up call it's a testing times because in next for 15 months
04:21the karnataka
04:22a state will see uh assembly polls going on and it's definitely a wake-up call to the congress
04:27will now go back to the drawing room to see figure out what exactly went on now virgin i have
04:31to say
04:32here the congress plank was removed the evms they are being fussed but now these were ballot papers
04:37so that is one catch 22 that has come in for rahul rahul gandhi and the dk shivukumar congress
04:42party but how do you look at this jibe that is being picked up dks it's done bro i remember
04:48congress
04:49party doing this earlier saying gyanesh kumar it's done bro well that's true in fact the karnataka bjp
04:59has tweeted and posted a post on instagram that dk it's done bro using a old picture of 2023 uh
05:07budget
05:07time when dk was in opposition part opposition benches in the assembly he was he had kept flowered in his
05:12ear when bommai was delivering his budget speech that photograph is now used by karnataka bjp saying dk
05:18it's done bro which means to say that from here the down downward trend starts of the government
05:22of the chief minister 2028 looks done is what the bjp is saying but i would say it's a battle
05:28uphill still
05:29it's uh the state for grabs for anyone right now be dk shukumar edu rapassan vijendra or kumar swami
05:34here but it's definitely going to be very interesting because now like i said bjp has stated the success
05:40for the first time after three and a half years so and now yes with both jds and bjp will
05:46work more
05:47unitedly because they have tasted the victory right now it's a shot in the arm and in southern
05:51states any sort of inroads being made for the bjp of the nda clearly comes across as a big deal
05:56but
05:56tell me this uh nagarjun what kind of demographic are we looking at that voted for the nda and in
06:03these constituencies interesting names uh bengaluru teachers constituency uh tell us about the age group
06:09uh the gender aspect here the ratio that we are looking at
06:16so out of the four elections two-way graduates two-way teachers uh two in northern karnataka
06:21two in southern karnataka the big shot in the arm was the bangalood teachers constituency this is a
06:26close-knit group hardly few thousands of them would vote uh touching a lakh or so uh this candidate
06:32called puttana was an incumbent mlc of the congress party he's been an mlc for many many years now but
06:38he's not been mlc with congress he's been shifting parties he was with jds he was with the bjp in
06:432024
06:44he came on to the uh recently he came on to the congress party and now it was his term
06:49uh he he was
06:50a candidate for the congress once again for the jds candidate called ap ranganath won this election and
06:56both of them come from the same background ap ranganath is a lawyer and puttana has been an mlc in
07:01the
07:01teachers constituency for many years now teachers only can vote in this not the regular voters any
07:07voter who's a teacher can register and vote in this election and in graduate election you need to be a
07:13graduate a voter who's a graduate only then can register as a voter and vote so thousands would
07:18have voted uh in this election it's a close-knit election there's a paper ballot elections because
07:23the number of people voting are quite less and hence the election commission went back to paper
07:27ballot and this is the system that they have been following now the bjp has latched on to this point
07:32that even in paper and ballot congress they're not losing what more i'm curious by this picture if
07:37you can help jog my memory also i believe he's wearing headphones but are there is that flower on on
07:44his ear for dks what what day was it why was he putting on headphones when the chief minister of
07:50the
07:50state was speaking and giving the speech and do you think there could be a reason specifically that
07:54this image of dks has been used with dks it's done bro
08:02puja in fact the photograph that the bjp has picked up is from the 2023 budget session
08:08when dk was still in the opposition he was sitting in the first row of the opposition when bommai was
08:14the chief minister he was delivering the budget and in karnataka when in karnada language when someone
08:20keeps a flower on the ear that means do not try to make a fool out of us when budget
08:25was being read
08:25out the congress mlas had won a flower on their ear you know symbolically telling bombai government
08:31saying do not make a fool out of ourselves we are not buying whatever you are telling in the budget
08:35session so it's a proverb or a idiom in karnada saying that kiwi mele hua which means literally
08:40translation would be flower on the ear which means don't make a fool out of the other person as well
08:45and that same picture is used now by the karnataka bjp saying that dk it's done bro do not try
08:51to make
08:51fool out of others and try to put a flower on someone's ear so that's the symbolic photo that
08:56they've used right now but the caption clearly says dk it's done bro that's the trending uh statement that
09:02every politician is using in delhi now you saw what ganesh it's done bro and now in karnataka bjp has
09:08latched on to that saying that dk it's done bro saying that 2028 is now done clearly somebody in
09:14uh bjp karnataka unit had a memory to remember this image and then put it out with this caption
09:20but nagarja do you think it becomes slightly difficult for the congress party and considering
09:24this is one of the few congress governed states to to now push forward the evm aspect because
09:29now this will be what bjp will quote well we had the ballot paper you lost that too so what
09:34what about
09:34your leadership then well absolutely true the bjp is definitely going to make uh everything out of
09:43this because it was the paper ballot election that happened but the congress i don't think
09:47would not panic immediately because this was a closed group that voted these are not the general
09:52voters and crores and crores in number didn't vote for it uh they didn't campaign much hard also it
09:57largely depends on the constituency the candidate and the few mlas in charge there uh who take care of
10:03the elections if they don't work in cohesiveness that's what happens and now the congress will
10:07definitely go back to the drawing room to figure out what went wrong uh the general in charge of
10:12uh general secretary of karnataka surjewala might likely ask a report also but definitely a wake-up
10:17call to ensure that what are the loopholes that we are facing over the last three and a half years
10:22is there some fatigue that the government is facing within the voters it might not be the complete
10:27electorate that has voted but still a certain sector of the people who have voted is good enough to be
10:32a wake-up call and put what is your understanding and assessment because uh not only as a resident of
10:39the
10:39state but also because you've been reporting extensively on these elections that the graduates
10:43constituency teachers constituency would vote for an nda would vote for a bjp in a state that's been
10:49governed by the congress for the past few years well that's true remember bjp has ruled the state since
10:582008 per se they have eduropa has been for the four times kumar swami has been cm for twice bjp
11:05and jds
11:06are not new to karnataka sung after nagpur has his highest presence in karnataka bl santos right now
11:12number three in the party uh is from karnataka is the organization secretary so bjp is not new to
11:18karnataka or karnataka but however right now the graduates will be good number teachers will be good
11:24number what the bjp and jds are saying that educated people are starting to vote for the nda because you
11:30have a teacher you have a graduate who are educated they are the ones who are voting right now for
11:35nda
11:35and it's four zero if it was two to at least that would be some saving grace dk shiv kumar
11:40definitely
11:41has a task right now to go back to his drawing room to figure out what went wrong and maybe
11:45some changes
11:46in the organization to get the head's role as to who because of who did the election uh went away
11:52and
11:52remember when the government is there in power the party has more strength to so that they can push
11:58ministers to go on the ground talk to the people work implement schemes ensure that everything is
12:03in process right now but that's the big embarrassment that's coming in right now for the party and the
12:07government here that despite being in the government perhaps they lost this because of not being
12:12cohesiveness and a lot of uh election happened when the jds and bjp came together and now the big
12:19question about also that will this nda be enough to defeat the congress which has almost around 140
12:26seats in karnataka this is is this an uh exclusive reaction that has come in from one group or could
12:32this be a wake-up call for the congress to realize the tide is changing
