Cyclone Michaung has triggered widespread destruction across coastal Andhra Pradesh as the landfall process reaches completion. Severe winds and torrential rains have lashed districts including Kakinada, Machilipatnam, and Konaseema, uprooting decades-old trees, damaging vehicles, and blocking roadways. The India Meteorological Department has issued continued red alerts across several coastal districts, with warnings of intense storm surges and gusty winds reaching up to 140 km/h. Flight and railway services have experienced disruptions, prompting advisories for residents to stay indoors and avoid travelling to severely affected coastal zones. State administration and emergency response teams remain deployed on the ground to prevent loss of life, clear debris, and provide necessary medical aid across impacted areas.

00:00My colleague Apoorva is also now joining us from Kakinara in Andhra Pradesh,
00:05close to where the landfall is currently underway.
00:08Apoorva, give us the latest update on the situation in Kakinara.
00:14Well, that's right. In fact, Anjali, we're here and the destruction has continued on in Kakinara as well,
00:23even as the Cyclone Ornab has and is scheduled to make and complete its landfall in the next two to
00:30three hours.
00:31In fact, just behind me, this is one of the parks here and this entire area,
00:35if you can see right from the light bulb, you know, that has been broken down by the branches
00:40to even a nest that has been destroyed here because of the gushing winds.
00:46All of this because the last 24 to 48 hours have been extremely, you know, damaging winds in the region
00:53as well.
00:54And the IMD has predicted that it is only likely that the next 24 hours as well
00:59is going to be extremely tumultuous here, be it in Kakinara or Yanam or, you know, in Konosima as well.
01:07This whole tree is a huge tree and it has completely been brought down by, you know,
01:13the winds that have been lashing and rains that have been lashing across the state and the city here
01:19over the last couple of hours as well.
01:21And let me remind you, the landfall is, you know, still in progress over here.
01:27I can just show you the glass pieces, you know, that have been broken as the lamp has been put
01:34down.
01:34This is the glass piece that has been broken over here.
01:37And you also see the branches that have been completely uprooted from the trees as the trees have been broken
01:44down.
01:44So, the destruction on the ground level definitely continues to be very severe.
01:49But with the landfall effect that still continues on and the winds that are still raging on
01:54in across various parts of the coastal regions in Andhra Pradesh,
01:58the next couple of hours will ascertain what the real damage will be.
02:03Because let's not forget the cyclonic storm surge is one more, you know,
02:08a quotient of element destruction that awaits these coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh
02:13now that the cyclone autumn is, you know, almost to completion with this landfall.
02:20All right, Apoorva, do stay with us.
02:22So, a trail of destruction can already be seen in several parts of Andhra Pradesh.
02:27And these were the visuals from Kaki Nara, where several trees have been uprooted.
02:31The branches have come down.
02:32They've also damaged several vehicles which were parked alongside along the roads.
02:38Apoorva continues to stay with us.
02:39Apoorva, also tell us about the current wind speed.
02:42Is it, what is it like?
02:44Is it as high as we were expecting it to be?
02:47Because reports stated that around the landfall, when landfall happens,
02:51it could go as high as 150 kilometers.
02:54Is it still as high as that?
03:00Well, no, in fact, it's not as high as right now because, like I said,
03:05the landfall effect has completely, you know, lessened down as it is going to a completion right now.
03:11The next one to two hours will be when we will completely see the landfall dying down
03:16as it has, you know, reached the coastal region.
03:18It has made the landfall, you know, the IF storm has passed from the region as well.
03:24But, however, it will be interesting to see what will be the next step of action.
03:28The IMD has predicted that there will be a continued dread alert throughout these regions,
03:33be it Konasima, Kakinada, Yanam, as well as, you know, the in and around nearby villages,
03:39be it Amalapuram, be it, you know, the Godavari districts as well,
03:43up until Vishakhapatnam and Srikakulam.
03:45So, all of these, you know, regions are still going to continue to be affected by cyclone order.
03:52Incidentally, not only in Andhra Pradesh, like my colleague Ajay had been describing,
03:57even in Odisha, we see the effects as well as down till Tabernadu.
04:01In fact, in Chennai as well, we saw the kind of storm surge that was witnessed away into,
04:06you know, late last night, which surprised the people.
04:09You know, yes, rains were expected.
04:11The chief minister had gone ahead and done a recce of Chambram-Bakam Lake,
04:15but storm surge or even, you know, rain slashing was not part of, you know,
04:19what they were briefed.
04:20And to see a storm surge-like situation happen in Chennai is unknown.
04:24And now, to see the kind of storm surge that will be impending here in Kakinada
04:28and across various coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh,
04:31it will be, you know, interesting to see what the next couple of hours will look like.
04:35Hopefully, the people are still following government instructions
04:38and are staying inside and staying safe.
04:41But apart from that, you know, the officials are continuously monitoring the situation.
04:46They are on the ground.
04:47And since last night as well, as the storm peaked,
04:51the eye of the storm just passed across,
04:53they were there on the ground through these rains,
04:56through these gushing winds to ensure that there isn't any loss of life
04:59or if anybody needs any kind of medical help,
05:02then they're available for the same.
05:03All right, Apoorva, do stay with us.
05:05So, the government has already stated that the top priority is that
05:08there should be no loss of lives and also to minimize the damage
05:12because there has been a lot of damage also that is already being witnessed.
05:15In fact, the next few hours are also crucial because the landfall process is currently underway.
05:20So, the next two to three hours are also crucial.
05:23Heavy rains could be witnessed in these states.
05:26So, minimizing the impact, minimizing the damage,
05:30infrastructural damage is what the government is also looking at,
05:33along with that there should be no loss of lives.
05:36Already, the advisories have been issued that people should not step out.
05:42They should stay indoors and they should also avoid traveling to the impacted areas.
05:48In fact, flights have also been cancelled to and from flights from Andhra Pradesh have already been cancelled.
05:53And my colleague Apoorva was also highlighting how that could be the situation for the next 24 hours.
06:00For the next 24 hours, the air services, the flight services will be impacted,
06:06not just the flight services.
06:06In fact, the railway services have also been impacted.
06:09If we talk about the roads, the roads have been blocked because of the uprooting of the trees
06:15and because of the branches coming down as Apoorva was showing in Kakinara.
06:26And she continues to stay with us.
06:28Apoorva, you were also telling us about how the situation was the worst between 2 a.m. to 4 a
06:34.m.
06:34when the landfall process had just begun.
06:37And that is when the wind speeds were approximately 160 km per hour.
06:43Tell us more about what all did you witness over that period.
06:50Well, there wasn't much to witness rather than the jarring noise and the winds that were, you know,
06:55we were able to go ahead and hear because it was a howling wind kind of noise.
07:00And apart from that, we also saw continuous rains that have been lashing across the region.
07:06And adding to that was the tree felling that took place.
07:10Like I told you and like I've shown you as well, last night was complete and utter destruction
07:15that took place.
07:16And the proof of it lies right here.
07:19The trees that have been longstanding for decades tall have been uprooted.
07:25Some even broken down to the point where they have, you know, completely gone ahead
07:31and taken damage and destruction throughout their route.
07:34This entire park is filled with trees.
07:37But right now, you know, you can't see the kind of destruction that has taken place.
07:41Tall, thick branches completely, you know, torn apart by the kind of wind.
07:47So you can just imagine how much of force must it have taken for such a huge dream.
07:53Absolutely.
07:54So that clearly explains the trail of destruction, clearly explains the kind of situation that
07:59must have been prevailing in Kakinada just a few hours ago from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. is
08:05what we are learning.
08:06My colleague Pramod Madhav is also now joining us from Andhra Pradesh, Machali, Patnam.
08:10Pramod, how does the situation look like currently in Machali, Patnam?
08:14Tell us about the wind speed, the heavy rainfall.
08:17Well, Anjali, the wind speed is expected to go up to 120 kilometers.
08:23That is kind of, you know, because it's a severe cyclonic storm.
08:26And the important aspect here we need to know is that, like, for a storm,
08:30the average wind speed that is expected goes up to 70 kilometers per hour.
08:33But here it is actually going to go double that amount.
08:37And the important aspect is that gust wind is also going to cause a lot of trouble.
08:40That is going to go up to 140 kilometers per hour.
08:43And it's becoming extremely difficult for us to even be here,
08:46considering that we are closely, you know, slowly moving towards the coastline.
08:50The important aspect is that this particular severe cyclonic storm
08:53is practically stationary at this coastline location
08:55between Kakinada and, you know, surrounding areas, Vishaka, Patnam and such.
08:59Which means it will stay there for at least 3 to 4 hours.
09:02And this is when we will have to battle this particular wind.
09:05And wind is going to cause, like we are expecting, we've been told,
09:07that wind is going to cause a lot of trouble in this particular location,
09:10especially causing damage to the, you know, properties and such, Anjali.
09:18Absolutely, Pramod.
09:26You can see how he's even struggling to stand still.
09:30So that clearly explains the situation in Machili, Patna,
09:33which is also greatly impacted because of Cyclone Ornab,
09:37which is making landfall.
09:38The wind speeds are really very high.
09:41It's above 100.
09:42Remember, for a storm, it should be around 70 kilometers per hour.
09:46But you can clearly make out that the wind speed is above 100 kilometers.
09:53There's also heavy rainfall that's accompanying the wind speed.
09:57So although the situation was calmer in Kakinada,
10:00but in Machili, Patna is where there's still chaos that can be seen.
