00:09Hi, welcome to Refinery29. I'm Connie Wang, and this is Sue Williamson, and today we're
00:14going to show you a fun DIY to do for summer that involves taking a pair of white canvas
00:19shoes and transforming them into something really, really awesome. So let's get started.
00:25Here's what you'll need for your gingham print sneakers. A cheap white pair of sneakers. We've
00:29got ours at H&M for $13. Two fabric paint pens. Masking tape. We used two different widths
00:35for ours. One is one fourth of an inch, and one is a full inch, and tissue paper. You'll
00:40use these to stuff into the sneakers while you paint them. So first you're going to prep
00:44the shoe. Do that by taking out the laces, like so, just so you don't get paint all over
00:54them. So sometimes these canvas shoes will have a little bit of a lip on the sole, meaning
01:00that the rubber goes above like this a little bit. So you're going to want to tape all of
01:05the sole, meaning that you're going to want to get up and above and into that lip, which
01:11might be a little tricky, but you can do it. I believe in you. So after you've taped the
01:16soles of those shoes, take your tissue paper and stuff them into the toes. This is going to
01:22keep the toe part of the shoe really nice and firm, so when you're painting, it doesn't
01:27mess you up. Ta-da! For the next step, you'll need your thinner piece of tape. Take one piece.
01:36Thank you, Connie. No problem.
01:39And place it right in the center of the front of the shoe. Like so. Then take your second
01:47piece and put it about a quarter of an inch away from the first. The space between each
01:53piece should be the same width as the tape that you're using. So, say you're using an
01:58inch piece of tape, say it should be an inch. If you want to be super accurate, you can use
02:03another piece of tape in between as a guiding tool, but we trust our judgment, so we're just
02:08going to eyeball it. Continue with this step until you've covered the entire shoe.
02:16So, now we're going to start painting. So, take your lighter color, for us that's gray,
02:20and then just start wherever you feel like it. The tape may lift up in certain areas, but
02:27just make sure you don't paint underneath it. After you finish painting, wait for it to dry,
02:32then remove all the pieces of tape. After you take the tape off, you're going to want to
02:39do the same thing except horizontally this time. When it's done, it should look like this, and
02:46then paint away. Now, after that layer of paint has dried, peel off all the tape to reveal your
02:57beautiful gray and white squares. Now, see where the two lines intersect and where it's
03:04the darker gray? That's where you're going to want to paint a black box, just to emphasize
03:08that they're connecting. And there's one box. You want to do this every single time the gray
03:16lines intersect. After you've colored in every single one of the squares, if you're going to
03:27see where it should look, well, pretty much like gingham. And so, now, finally, you can
03:32take off a big piece of tape. So, after you've taken everything out, you're going to want to
03:37lace them again. So, through fashion magic, we have a perfect gingham pair of summer shoes.
03:46Aren't they cute? These would look super cute with either a sturdy sundress or a cropped
03:52pair of trousers or shorts, basically anything. Even if you want to mix prints up, this would
03:58be a really, really good neutral type of print to pair things with. So, now that you have
04:02them, go and have tons of expenditures in your new patterned gingham canvas shoe.
04:09Okay.
04:09Yeah.
04:18Yeah, yeah.
04:18That might be great.
04:19I know.
04:19Yeah, yeah.
04:19Yeah, yeah.
04:19Yeah, yeah.
04:19Yeah, yeah.
04:19That might be a good idea.
