00:00I'm Asia, and welcome to the five things you need to know.
00:03Yo curls is poppin' girl.
00:05Do a little tap.
00:06Slide in my DMs.
00:09I'm using all of that, I swear.
00:11Now I must let you know before we begin
00:13that this is based on my own personal account
00:15of transitioning my hair.
00:17Cause let's face it, it's different for everyone.
00:19But let's get started.
00:20The first thing you need to know about transitioning your hair
00:23from relaxed to natural is that this is just the first step.
00:26And I know, because I've been there.
00:28I had relaxed hair most of my life.
00:31But because I was so attached to my hair,
00:33making the decision to go natural was a little bit difficult.
00:36The time that I decided to transition,
00:38I had already been through shock, denial, pain, and guilt.
00:42But my hair was falling out so rapidly.
00:44And when that happens to you, you have to make a change.
00:47The second thing you need to know about transitioning your hair
00:49is that there are typically two ways to go about it.
00:52Either one big chop, or you allow the relaxed hair
00:56to go to the ends and then you cut off the damage.
00:58Now, never, ever, ever feel pressure to just do one big chop.
01:03Unless, of course, you have no other choice.
01:07Or you've always wanted to see yourself with a short haircut.
01:10I grew out my hair for a good long 19 years.
01:13But moving from the humidity of Florida to the frigid cold
01:17of New York showed me no mercy.
01:20I had to get the big chop.
01:21Number three, there's a lot of products out there for you.
01:25It just depends on your hair type.
01:27There's high porosity and low porosity products.
01:30There are shampoos, conditioners, curling creams,
01:33protein treatments, oil treatments.
01:35I think the chop is the easy part.
01:37Finding the right product is what takes you some time.
01:40Take it from someone who has taken five years
01:43to find the right product for their hair.
01:45The fourth thing you need to know about transitioning your hair
01:47is that there are a ton of different styles out there
01:49for you to try.
01:50Anybody can go on YouTube and look up a tutorial.
01:52I mean, just check out our channel.
01:54But if you're anything like me, you're no good at hair.
01:58So, to achieve a different curl pattern than my natural one,
02:01I do a two-strand twist, use a little bit of curling cream.
02:04I wrap it up and pin it to my head.
02:06I only do it for the twist out.
02:08Now, a lot of people can rock knots like Bantu,
02:10but I am not one of those people.
02:13You can also use cold wave rods,
02:15also known as perm rods, or any type of curlers,
02:18and just sit under a dryer to speed up the process.
02:21The fifth and final thing you need to know
02:22is that you need to rock that .
02:25Don't fret.
02:26This will not happen overnight.
02:27It takes a lot of hard work, care, maintenance,
02:31but there are a lot of silk bonnets, scarfs,
02:33other contraptions to keep your hair laid.
02:36Now, take your pics, put it to your heart,
02:39for we are the United Sisters in shrinkage,
02:42and we will not be ashamed by our kinks and curls.
02:45Of course, no shade to my relaxes is out there,
02:48but if you ever do decide to transition,
02:50I hope this guides you well.
02:51That's been the five things you need to know
02:53about transitioning your hair.
02:54I'll see you guys next time.
