00:00I really wanted to be a photographer. I went to San Francisco Community College and took photo classes.
00:04I didn't graduate or anything, but how did I discover what I wanted to do?
00:08It was a journey. Nasty Gal was an eBay store when I first started out.
00:12So it was really just me in a room with a camera and a few pieces of vintage clothing, and
00:16any girl I could find to model stuff for free.
00:24From the beginning, it was step by step. I didn't found a company to be a CEO. I didn't know
00:30I'd ever have a store. I didn't plan on designing clothes.
00:33I never thought we'd have a team the size that we have. I started an eBay store in 2006.
00:55Rejection is often the universe just telling you that you're exactly where you need to be, and it's just not
01:01where you thought it was.
01:07My first job was at Subway. I was a gardener at one point. I had, like, dropped out of community
01:12college and was just kind of struggling in my early 20s.
01:15I didn't know what I wanted to do.
01:35Even in the beginning, I wasn't like, I'm going to be a founder and a CEO of my eBay store.
01:40Like, you know, people were like, wow, like, how did you have this?
01:42Like, I was 22 and living on, like, Boston Market and driving 87 Volvo. Like, it wasn't, there was no
01:48grand plan.
02:01I think some of us get to choose what we're good at, and some people go to college and they
02:04say, I'm going to be a doctor. I'm going to go to college, I'm going to go to medical school,
02:07I'm going to have my residency, I'll be a doctor.
02:09And for the rest of us, it's a struggle, and we have to try different things, and we have to
02:13listen for when things start to click.
02:22It doesn't matter how successful you are, whatever that means, you're looking at other people and you're seeing the best
02:27things about their lives.
02:28Oh my god, she started a company, and she wrote a book, and it works, and whatever.
02:32And it's just like, I wake up every day, and there's just as many challenges.
02:40At the end of the day, I think, you should be your own fan. You should be your own biggest
02:47fan.
02:48You should believe that the people that you look up to are no better than you, and that amazing things
02:53will happen.
