00:03I'm Christina and I write the site Trois Rouge and I am here in Toronto it's my
00:09first time in Canada so I want to discover Toronto I want to like know the
00:13fashion sense the food what's the art like here what are the people about I'm
00:17really excited to discover the city because I know Toronto's so big I really
00:21want to get a sense of the voice of the city. I love everything. Art and fashion
00:26pours out of every city street so I met up with Marika of Nor Black Nor White who
00:31makes clothes look like art. So this is an old vintage piece from a village in
00:35Gujarat in North India and we kind of just added the chains and then lined it
00:39with the tie-dye silk. It's really really gorgeous. So I want to hear more about
00:44your collection Nor Black Nor White. It's me and my old friend of mine that used to
00:49always wear our mom's like old textiles and we'd style them a certain way and so
00:54we kind of got close on that visual kind of language and relationship. That was
00:58kind of the essence and the core of Nor Black Nor White is exploring a space
01:02that hasn't been explored before from a contemporary Indian textile kind of form
01:07mostly focusing on women and people of color. That's reversible it's called the
01:12Empress Kimono. Oh it's so cool. So Marika is working on a shoe club with the
01:19local cobbler and I want to see some of the work they're doing. So Soul Survivor is a shoe
01:23repair shop located in Toronto and what we do here is we repair and make custom
01:30handmade leather goods. It's an all-female run cobbler shop so. That's really
01:34interesting so what was the idea behind that concept? I had a hard time finding
01:38someone that would take me on because their first response was oh you're a
01:41girl you're probably not gonna be strong enough for this job and that was true I
01:45wasn't at first but all it takes is just to build up your stamina and practice
01:48practice practice and you get good at something. So what would you think is like
01:52a Toronto style? Now I feel because we're such a diverse city people are kind of
01:58owning themselves and feeling more confident with their stuff so I think
02:02it's it's a big mashup. Well thank you so much for showing me the collection I love
02:06everything. This is really really beautiful. Thank you. So it was really
02:11awesome meeting her and listening about her designs and like their collaboration
02:14process and I'm really excited to see like what they're actually gonna make.
02:19Local culture is super big in Toronto so before I go to lunch and then I meet up
02:23with Chef Suzanne of Saturday Dinette and we're gonna pick up some local
02:27ingredients for her restaurant. So where are we right now? We are in Kensington
02:31Market. I love this area I love where your restaurant is. Thank you thank you. It's all
02:37the beauty and it's just the interesting bits that make up the city. What are we
02:41getting? We're gonna get some ground pork today. Yeah I mean I'm just needing to
02:46update get some more for the recipe of my biscuits and gravy. What's that? I don't
02:52know I just like everything.
02:58How long have you been here? Like how did you what's the deal? This is Saturday
03:02Dinette. This is my baby. This is my first first restaurant. I'm with my husband
03:07partner in Crying Johnny. How did you find this place? We stumbled upon this spot. My
03:12husband and I lived in the neighborhood. We were like this is hot. It's on the corner.
03:16Yeah. Like there's a little bit of everything for everybody. I mean and I think that's the
03:20beautiful thing about why this city really ticks and it's like the little hot
03:24spot right now because it's like a serious a multicultural epicenter. Like
03:29everybody is here. Like the shops, the restaurants, the cafes, the bars on the East
03:34stand particularly. We're kind of like vibing right now. We're really making a little.
03:38Everything's very cool. Yeah. But you're in Toronto so welcome. My hands are washed.
03:42Hands are washed? You didn't see me but I did it I swear. Are you sure? I promise you. Smash
03:46it. Whoa. Oh my god. I love popcorn.
03:51Right here, right? Right in the middle. All over. Oh, more, right? Give it a little. Oh, look at that.
03:56Oh, I did it. There you go. Oh. Oh. That's what we do in Canada with maple syrup. Oh my
04:04god. It's so good.
04:06All right. That's great amount. I am like the sexy, like the sexy chef I've never was.
04:12Yeah. Hi. Hello. Pancakes. There was a lot of love put into this. A lot of love. A lot of
04:19love. Yeah. A lot of love. And a little laughing. And focus.
04:20It was good. Suzanne put so much love and thaw into each dish. I feel like I'm at home.
04:29Second City Toronto is the home of comedians so I popped by to catch a show.
04:39Do you find inspiration like on the streets of Toronto? Oh my god, yes. Like people that make you laugh
04:43that you've been able to get that anywhere else?
04:45Oh, yes. You know what I mean? That's where comedy comes from. The best and funniest material is stuff that
04:51is true to life.
04:52Right. And what's fantastic about Toronto is there are a lot of different types of people and on any given
04:58day you can look out and see just the weirdest character or hear a line that you're like,
05:03What? What does that mean? I don't know. I want to explore that. And as comedians you have to be
05:09really open to what's around you and Toronto is fantastic.
05:13Ah, I want to walk around now.
05:18Toronto is definitely not what I expected. There's just like mixtures of so many different cultures and I loved it
05:24honestly. It was really cool.
05:26Toronto has a feeling that really anything is possible and everything is here waiting to be discovered.
05:31From hole in the walls to massive towers with big views, Toronto's vibrant culture and warm-hearted, hilarious citizens made
05:38me realize what I've been missing all these years.
05:40Yeah.
