Trainer Roz Mays and R29er Laura Delarato discuss what makes a good gym top and sports bra, plus size athleticism, and representation in the fitness community.
Transcript
00:03I love working out. The challenge I face is not getting myself to the gym, it's
00:09finding the right clothes that make me feel confident when I get here. The good
00:15news is I've figured it out and the person who's been most inspiring to me
00:19is my badass trainer, Roz Mays. I like to be sporty and have a lot of fun and go
00:29to the gym, but this isn't really working for me on a day-to-day. It's kind of drab
00:34and, I don't know, not as cute you would think, right? You can do better. So today
00:39what we're here to do is we're here to look at a lot of really cool low-end and
00:43high-end plus-size fitness gear. These companies actually go to plus sizes. I
00:49don't want to look matronly when I work out, but I do want a good classic basic.
00:54This top is super easy to find. It's from the Gap. It comes in an extra large
00:58and it's really stretchy. So I'm going to try it on and see what it looks like.
01:03Oh yeah! Oh, passes the bounce test. I can stretch and touch my toes. Bottom line, this top is super
01:10supportive.
01:11It definitely is, but I feel like if you're going to be training with me, you need a little color.
01:22Try it on. Oh, yes. You already know how I feel about this. I already know how you feel about
01:28it.
01:28This takes us to a whole other level as far as like plus-size fitness wear. And it's bright.
01:34It's saying, I'm here. Right. And it's okay that I'm here. In fact, I love being here.
01:40Right. If I put my hands above my head, it totally stays in place. This Lane Bryant top
01:44is really cute and everything, but it's not the most supportive top. I need a little more support
01:50when I work out. So my go-to and actually my favorite workout brand is this company called
01:58Rainbow Curves. Go try that on. All right. We're going to go try it on.
02:03Oh yeah. Yeah. I love this top because it's really, really supportive. And from a trainer perspective,
02:11if I'm working with you, I can see how your body is moving, the details of your muscle,
02:17and not just look at a client wearing a tent for a shirt. Hold on. Hold on. What's the bra
02:23situation?
02:24Oh, I have this like one bra that I wear, and then I put another bra on top of it.
02:29Ha ha ha ha ha. No more. Let me tell you, the people at Enel, they do one thing.
02:35They make plus size sports bras. And listen, look. It is not in some ugly shade of grandma
02:44white. And do you see this? These hook and eye straps. Oh man. No more. This.
02:51Ha ha ha ha. Check it out. Oh yes.
02:57I feel like they just casted a new superwoman when I walked out here. I don't think I've ever felt
03:01this supported wearing one piece of that, like one thing on me. Never. Oh wait a minute. I have one
03:08more thing. Put it on. Wait, am I Roz? Oh snap. The bra that's underneath here is just like,
03:15it's so supportive that it doesn't matter that this is wrapped up. Wait, what's that movie just did?
03:21Get it, get it, get it. Rod, thank you. I don't think I've ever had enough confidence to wear a
03:27crop top. When you're at the gym, like how do you keep your head up when people are constantly
03:31telling you that you shouldn't be there or can't be there? You've got to remember why you're there.
03:36You're there so you can be the best version of Laura. Right. The best version of who you are.
03:43I have had other fitness professionals question why anybody would want to hire me because of my size.
03:51I want to put on something that's going to make me hyped to go to the gym. Right. And to
03:55be proud.
03:58The more armor that we can have going in, the easier that battle's going to be.
