00:03snits, snits, snits, snits, snits, snits.
00:04Hey, guys. Mi-Anne here, beauty writer at Refinery29.
00:06Oh, it feels so weird.
00:08Today, I'm here with my friend and co-worker, Bumbly, who has never washed a brush in her life.
00:14Never. Not a one.
00:15What do you do with them?
00:16I just toss them.
00:17Can you throw them away?
00:19Yeah.
00:20That's so bad!
00:21For my wallet, especially.
00:23Well, there are a few reasons why you really should be washing your brushes at least once every two weeks
00:28because they harbor a lot of germs.
00:31Dirty brushes will lead to acne, skin irritations.
00:35I'm gonna show you a few ways to do it.
00:37Let's start with mixing one part dish soap
00:40with one part extra virgin olive oil.
00:44So what the olive oil is going to do
00:45is act as a bit of a conditioning agent.
00:48You don't want to like strip too much from them
00:50because they're gonna get dry.
00:52I'm gonna get this dirty foundation brush.
00:54Okay.
00:54And I'm gonna wet it.
00:56Then I'm going to dip it in our mixture here.
01:00Go back and forth.
01:01Also kind of rinse it out as you go.
01:04Like look at all of that.
01:08Two years of foundation in this brush right now.
01:11It's gonna feel so good after two
01:13when you use a clean brush.
01:15It's like getting into clean sheets for the first time.
01:19Yeah, oh gosh.
01:19And your brush is gonna pick up products so much easier.
01:25If you lay it flat, water can like trickle up to the ferrule.
01:28Yeah.
01:29Where there's like glue and like other stuff
01:30that keeps all the brush hairs in place.
01:32And that could like break it down
01:34and like it could lead to your brush hairs coming out.
01:39Another thing that you can do is go to the store like Sephora
01:42or Ulta or something and grab a brush cleaner.
01:45They come in like liquid form.
01:47They also come in solid form
01:48which is the one that we're gonna be using today
01:49which is the Beauty Blender Solid Cleanser
01:53which you can use on sponges as well.
01:54This one comes with a little silicone pad
01:56that you can use to like rub your brushes on.
01:58But the soap is really easy.
02:01So basically what you do is you'll wet your brush,
02:03swirl it in to pick up the product
02:04and then wash it under the sink.
02:05This is also very dirty brush from this.
02:11I told you!
02:12This is the Lulumia.
02:15I'm just gonna call it the egg.
02:17It is a brush cleaning machine.
02:18So it looks really strange but I've never used it before
02:21but apparently it's supposed to wash your brushes for you
02:23which is awesome.
02:25I'm gonna fill it up to the line it says max with water.
02:29And I'm gonna dispense an ounce of this fluid
02:31straight into the cavity.
02:33It takes six brushes.
02:35Poke it through.
02:36Now they're in.
02:37I'm gonna make them all similar heights
02:38and I'm gonna attach it in.
02:43It looks like a little spaceship
02:45that's just like launching them into cleanliness.
02:47I kind of want to take a boomerang of it.
02:55Hey, they look pretty clean!
02:56But I think that we can't really judge
02:59until we see them dry
03:00because when they're all wet they kind of look the same.
03:02Yeah.
03:02But when you see it tomorrow you'll really be able to see
03:04if we've got all the product out.
03:06So I guess we'll have to wait for a bit
03:08and check back later.
03:10Okay.
03:11Good morning Wembley!
03:12Good morning!
03:12So we are here for day two of our brush washing extravaganza.
03:17We have the three different methods of brushes dried now.
03:21So we're gonna see how we did.
03:31This one is not completely clean.
03:33There's still a little bit of eyeshadow.
03:35And normally eyeshadow brushes are just the easiest ones to clean.
03:37So that's a little bit disappointing.
03:38If you had to rate these on a scale of one to ten in terms of affordability
03:43and like whether or not you'd use it, practicality,
03:45what would you give these different methods?
03:47I think that I'm gonna stick by my tried and true favorite.
03:51Okay.
03:51That I just learned.
03:54And give the olive oil and soap method a 10 out of 10.
03:59It's easy, it feels fun to do.
04:01I've been using that method since high school.
04:04I really like it so I would also give it a 10 out of 10.
04:07The solid soap, I think I would give it a 6 out of 10.
04:14Watching all the dirt come off onto the soap.
04:18I actually really like the silicone pad in there.
04:21So I actually would give that a 9.
04:22The only reason I would knock it down a point
04:24is because it is a little bit pricey.
04:27This egg, I'm gonna give it a 2 out of 10
04:30just because for me it doesn't make any sense.
04:34I'm not gonna spend that much money
04:36on something that I can just do myself.
04:38I'm like where am I gonna put it?
04:39For what it is, I think that I'd probably give it like a 4.
04:43I like hand washing away brushes.
04:44I like to like engage with my brushes.
04:46Yeah.
04:47Now I'm going to brush up on these new skills
04:50and become a brush washer.
04:53Yay!
