00:10Hi, I'm David Milchard, and in case you didn't know, I'm Canadian.
00:15Now, up in Canada, we love the whole world, and the whole world loves us.
00:19From our adorable moose to our hunky Prime Minister.
00:22But word on the street is, down here in the U.S., you guys don't feel the same way.
00:27U.S.A.! U.S.A.!
00:30In fact, in a recent poll, 70% of Americans said that the next president should focus on domestic policy
00:35rather than foreign policy.
00:3770%, is that right?
00:39Yeah.
00:39Really?
00:40Yeah.
00:41Well, let's go find out.
00:48Excuse me, sir, do you have time to talk to a Canadian?
00:50When you're done locking up your bike, may I ask you some questions?
00:53Can I ask you some questions, Amok?
00:55Guys, someone's finally going to talk to me.
00:56Where are you from?
00:57I'm from Minnesota.
00:58I live in New City.
00:59I'm from Nebraska.
01:00I'm Canadian.
01:01Okay, how's the bacon over there?
01:03Oh, buddy.
01:04Hey, the election's coming up, right?
01:06I agree, I'm a big political voter.
01:08I vote every year.
01:09Yes!
01:10High five!
01:11Whoa!
01:12What are some issues that might influence your vote?
01:15The economy.
01:16Terrorism.
01:17Climate change.
01:18The economy in this country is going to hell.
01:22Foreign policy is definitely up there.
01:23Bringing back a lot of the jobs.
01:25Jobs.
01:26More job opportunities.
01:28Violence against African Americans.
01:30Three important issues when you're going to help your vote.
01:32We are part of it.
01:34So we're hearing a little about foreign policy, but it seems most people are concerned with
01:38economy and jobs, which is in line with our polls.
01:43In 2016, the issues that matter most to voters, such as jobs, the economy, and terrorism, blow
01:49foreign policy out of the water.
01:51Even other outranks foreign policy.
01:53In fact, in each of the last 50 years, a majority of Americans have agreed that the U.S. should
01:59concentrate on their own national problems and not think so much in international terms.
02:03Now, I'm just a Canadian, so I don't know much about jobs, economy, or other, but I don't see how
02:09you can separate terrorism from foreign policy.
02:13You know, maybe people just don't understand what foreign policy is.
02:18Could you define foreign policy?
02:20Um, not right off, not right off him, but, you know.
02:24Right.
02:25I guess, foreign policy, well, I'm not very familiar with that term.
02:32Foreign policy to me is like, stay out of all foreign, uh, entanglements, just like George Washington said.
02:37I'll tell you the truth, I haven't really done any research on foreign anything.
02:42I mean, how it exists, or like?
02:45Well, basically, U.S. foreign policy is the policies of the U.S. government toward the outside world.
02:52Well, that sounds like it's great for governments, but how does that affect individuals?
02:56A lot of the things that we think of as domestic policy, that voters really care about, actually have a
03:02very important foreign policy component.
03:04Look at the economy.
03:06In 1980, 70% of clothes bought in the U.S. were made in the U.S.
03:11Now it's closer to 2%.
03:13Those jeans you're wearing are made from cotton grown in India, woven in Mexico, assembled in Vietnam, and held up
03:19by a zipper manufactured by a Japanese conglomerate.
03:23So international trade deals are something you interact with every day, whether you know it or not.
03:28And we don't just consume.
03:30The U.S. is the second largest exporter of goods in the world.
03:33Souring international trade agreements could cost us up to $2 trillion and millions of jobs.
03:39Or take the environment, an important issue to younger voters, and with good reason.
03:44Americans are seeing more effects of climate change every year.
03:48But 95% of the world's population lives outside our borders.
03:52Alone, we can only do so much.
03:55It's going to take international cooperation to solve the problem.
03:58And the list goes on.
04:00The idea that anything is contained by national borders in this entangled world is outdated.
04:05Wait a second. How do you know so much about foreign policy?
04:08I have a Ph.D. in political science.
04:10Oh, okay. I ran into you.
04:13Do you think foreign policy is connected to domestic policy in the sense of, like, economy?
04:19To an extent, yes.
04:21I haven't really thought about it, so.
04:23Would it surprise you that economy and jobs and all of that falls underneath foreign policy?
04:29No.
04:29I mean, what happens here affects the world, because we are a global society.
04:34The United States is the second largest exporter in the world, globally.
04:37So, a good foreign policy, what do you think?
04:41Yeah.
04:42It makes sense to have one?
04:42Yeah, yeah.
04:43Oh, yeah.
04:44So, if all the issues Americans care about are tied to foreign policy, then Americans do care about foreign policy.
04:50They just don't realize it.
04:51Unlike us Canadians.
04:53No.
04:53What?
04:54No.
04:55Really?
04:56Oh, well, it seems that Canadians rank foreign policy even lower than Americans.
05:01If you'll excuse me, I have to get the word out.
05:10No.
05:13No.
05:13No.
05:14No.
