00:00Phobias are intense, but they're not always rational.
00:03According to the National Institute of Mental Health,
00:0519.2 million people have phobias,
00:08but only 32% of those are getting help for it.
00:11But can you cure a phobia? It depends on what it is.
00:14Some phobias are treated by this thing called behavioral exposure,
00:18which is exactly what it sounds like.
00:19The more you're exposed to it, the more it can change your behavior.
00:22We're pretty sure we're not at the phobia level,
00:24but we're going to try a little exposure therapy today.
00:26By taking all of our fears and putting them on our face.
00:30Hi guys, I'm Sarah, and I have a fear of tunnels.
00:35My fear is raisins. Cats.
00:37But really, who's not afraid of spiders?
00:39One summer, I think I was like six,
00:42I go down to visit my great-grandmother in Fork, South Carolina.
00:45There's 27 cats on her porch, just clawing for scraps of grits and biscuits and bacon.
00:51Haven't been able to look at them the same since.
00:53I'm in kindergarten, it's snack time.
00:56I'm trying raisins for the first time.
00:58I chug them, they're gross.
01:00Hour later, they make me sick, I'm throwing up.
01:02I come out the bathroom and a little boy decides to like throw raisins at me and chant like,
01:07raisin, raisin.
01:08When I go through a tunnel, it's absolutely a shock to my system.
01:14Spiders.
01:14Little legs and little bodies and they're just so sneaky.
01:18I'm going to address everything now with this raisin-inspired makeup look.
01:22What better way to face my fears of cats than to do a cat eye?
01:26I'm also afraid of a cat eye because they're really hard to do.
01:29I'm going to do a smokey eye because when I think about tunnels, I think about darkness.
01:34I thought I'd create a little look using some of these spidery lashes.
01:38So today I'm going to be using this Curvitude Liner by Maybelline.
01:42I figured that this would be easier than a gel pot or a liquid liner because it's angled,
01:48so it makes my life a lot easier.
01:49Just doing little lash lines.
01:53Maybe if I actually knew how to like apply makeup, this would be a little neater.
01:57But you know, raisins are ugly and messy and crunchy, so I'm going for the same thing here.
02:03Just going to, oh, that's already too dark.
02:06Alright.
02:07I'm just going for it, right?
02:08Just like go into the tunnel.
02:11So I'm mixing some blues, some grays, and some blacks because you know,
02:14that's what all the spiders, that's the colors they come in.
02:18And all I'm thinking about right now is that little boy throwing raisins at me.
02:21This is going to be the real depth, the inside of the tunnel, that thing,
02:27that thing that I just like am terrified of.
02:29I'm just going to go straight.
02:31I'm going to go straight in there.
02:33If someone were to put a cat in my lap right now,
02:40I'd probably just cry.
02:43Maybe next time I'll just imagine spiders wearing fake lashes.
02:46To be honest, that means I'll probably never wear fake lashes again.
02:50So now that I've got like the base of my eyes,
02:53we're going to do what I like to call the highlights, right?
02:57The lights that go through the tunnel and give the illusion that I'm not going to die.
03:11Got the deep purple, got a little bit of brown.
03:14So now I'm going to put some gold as an ode to the golden raisins.
03:18Oh, I like, oh, hold on now.
03:23To really amp up this look and to finish this off,
03:26I'm going to use a bit of Anastasia Beverly Hills black lipstick.
03:39I always call cats Satan's mascots because they're just like little demonic cheerleaders who meow.
03:50The eyeliner that I used on my lids, I'm going to use it to line my lips.
03:56And then I'm just going to take this great liquid lipstick and I'm going to go straight in for it.
04:04This is the color of a raisin.
04:09Oh my God.
04:13I don't know if it helped with my fear of spiders.
04:15I think if a true spider caught across the table, I'd still be out the door in a second.
04:19I don't know if it really helped me conquer my fear, but it did help to deconstruct the tunnel.
04:26And yeah, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
04:31My fear of colors that resemble raisins, absolutely.
04:35I could totally tackle a makeup look with this kind of purple.
04:39Will I eat a raisin?
04:41No, never.
04:42This was like a big step for me, like trying a cat eye when I usually can just like rely
04:46on mascara.
04:48I know it's not like the best, but it's a start.
04:51As for it helping me with my fear of cats, that's a hard no.
04:54I will never get over my fear of cats, like probably ever.
05:00If there's anything good I can take away from this, it's that maybe from now on, I do love makeup.
05:06So maybe I can imagine that spiders like to wear fake lashes and maybe he's just like tucked away in
05:11my bed with like a beautiful set of lashes with his little legs.
05:16But on a serious note, if you do have a phobia or a fear that is negatively impacting your life,
05:21contact a mental health professional to seek treatment.
05:24And that's all for us here at R29.
05:27See you next time.
