Contouring tips for people with fair, medium, and deep skin tones.
Transcript
00:00Hey, what's up guys? It's Kalia, beauty writer here at Refinery29, and this is Beauty in a Snap.
00:05Today we're talking all about contouring. Contouring is something that is having more than
00:09just a moment. You see it on the red carpet, but you can also see it on your favorite influencers
00:13on Instagram. And it's something that you can do that suits your mood as well. You can either go
00:19super duper subtle or Kim K it up and do it really intense. But either way you go, something that's
00:24really important is choosing the right contour shade for your skin tone. So today I have three
00:28other R29s with me and we're going to pick the right shades for them. In order to get the best
00:32colors from our friends, I consulted makeup artist Andre Sarmiento who gave me a few tricks on choosing
00:37the right contour colors. Let's get started. First up we have Serena who has lighter, fairer skin and it's
00:42more on the dry side. So I'm here with my friend Serena. Tell me, do you contour? Do I contour?
00:48Honey,
00:48I love contour. You can call me Kim Kardashian. West. It's like boom, boom. Am I doing it right?
00:53You make a three, yeah? Right, you make a three. Or like a little butt. Oh, even better.
00:57So actual contouring is really easy, but picking the shade is kind of the hard part. For fair
01:02skin can be a little tricky because generally you want to lean towards the gray side. But I know that
01:06can be a little bit overwhelming. So on top of your gray contour, you would do a peachier blush to
01:11kind
01:11of bring out that color. So I think I have the perfect palette for you actually. Let me see it.
01:16It is NYX's Three Steps to Sculpt. So you can see that the deepest shade is a little bit of
01:23a gray.
01:24And this one has a grayish cast as well, but that's okay because this highlight is nice
01:29and peachy and it'll really make your cheekbones pop. Three steps. How hard could it be, right?
01:33Do you have a brush? I sure do. I'm going to start with the brown, the darkest color.
01:39Yep. The three, right? Yep, make a three. Honestly, my favorite number. That would go on the cheekbones,
01:47like the apples of your cheeks. Oh. Whoa. I mean, look at that. Time for the highlight?
01:54Yes. My favorite part. Can I take this with me? I'm obsessed. Thank you so much,
02:00Kalea. I really honestly love this. I feel like you made it really simple for me to contour my face.
02:06Do you feel like these colors fit you more than other contour colors that you've tried before?
02:09Definitely. Honestly, I think before I was using warmer tones, not gray. So I kind of looked a little
02:17crazy and it just like didn't really match my skin tone. And even better, you can get this at the
02:22drugstore. Kalea, thank you so much for all your tips. I feel like I had like a contour rebirth,
02:26you know? I feel like I'm stepping into this new world. Can I take this with me? Why not? Thank
02:33you.
02:34Next up, we have Larisse who has a medium skin tone but gets a little bit oily on her T
02:38-zone. Tell us
02:38about how you find like the right shades for you. In the past, I've definitely gone like too light.
02:44We found this Maybelline Master Contour. It has a contour, a blush, and a highlight. And it's perfect
02:52because it breaks up that harsh contour line. I got my brushes. Let's do this. Let's do it. Okay. So
02:58I'm
02:59gonna start with the darker color. Next up, I'm gonna try the blush. Time for step three. I'm gonna
03:07go into the highlight. Who would have thought that like Maybelline had that fire? They got it. For
03:14like under 10 bucks. Yeah, that's my favorite type of fire. So how do you feel about the colors? Like,
03:19how do you feel about this palette? These colors, I feel like they were just made for me. Sorry,
03:25everybody else. Well, thank you so much, Kalaya. Like now I have all these tips. I feel like a
03:29contouring pro now. You are. You're a contour queen. Yes. Last up, we have Anissa who has a deep skin
03:36tone and also has oily and acne prone skin. So I'm here with Anissa. Anissa, tell us about contouring.
03:42Do you do it? I want to know how to contour. Okay. Never have I ever. It just seems like
03:46very daunting. So
03:48when you're picking a contour shade for deeper skin tones like ours, you have to make sure that you stay
03:52away from the gray. Like fair skin tones, they use gray. We don't. I think that what's best is
03:58picking out a richer shade. Like you want to go for like the chocolate browns, almost even black
04:03so that you can bring out that, you know, accentuate the cheekbones and whatnot. You want to look sculpted.
04:08Yes. I think I have the perfect contour kit for you. Yay. This is from CoverGirl. This is their
04:15True Glend Contour Palette. You can get this at any drugstore and it has all the steps that you need.
04:21Anissa, you ready? I'm ready. All right, let's do it. So I'm going to start with the contour color,
04:26the deepest color, and make a three slash a butt on my face. Is it happening?
04:34So what you're going to do next is go underneath the line, your cheekbone line,
04:39with this highlight shade. Okay. And that will really make that line pop. I don't know why I'm
04:46going to do this. I mean, you could. That does help. Try to sculpt out those cheekbones.
04:55And to top it off, you can just add a little touch of highlighter to your,
04:59to the highest planes of your cheeks.
05:04That's good. That's good. That's good.
05:06How do you think? What do you think? You look good, girl. Okay.
05:09I see it. I see the sculpting. Your cheekbones are nice and glistening.
05:14You taught me some things. We've learned together. I tried. Cool.
05:18Kalia, I thank you so much. Of course. I'm excited to try these. I'm taking all this.
05:23It's no longer yours. And I'm excited to try it out in like real life.
05:26So I think the takeaway today is that contouring is definitely not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing.
05:31We have someone with fair skin, we have someone with medium skin, and we also have someone with the
05:34deeper skin tone. And everyone is different, but I think the thing that remains the same
05:38is that it's all about trial and error. And so hopefully these tips help you in your own life.
05:43Thanks so much for watching this episode of Beauty in a Snap. Now go forth and contour. Bye.
