Shatterbox Case Study Award Submission
Transcript
00:23In 2016, Refinery29 took a stand against a disturbing trend in Hollywood.
00:29Only 7% of major Hollywood productions had a woman director at the helm, so we created
00:35Shatterbox, a series aimed to change that by giving 12 women directors a platform to
00:42tell their stories of power, empathy, and conflict, and we weren't afraid to shy away
00:49from controversial topics, as each film covered a range of important issues, including abortion,
00:58LGBTQ marriage, transgender identity, gender inequality, bullying, and social injustice.
01:10To create true female storytelling, we gave women the power in front and behind the camera.
01:15The directors became brand ambassadors for the Shatterbox mission, championing our efforts
01:20to give women in film the voice they deserve.
01:23So hopefully you do want more, so I can get back to directing.
01:26And we brought these stories to light, both to our audience and industry leaders.
01:33I directed a short.
01:34I was like, you know what?
01:35You're free.
01:35I can do whatever I want.
01:37From hosting panels at prestigious film festivals.
01:39This is going to be a short film series exploring the dynamics of power.
01:44To public screenings at local city theaters.
01:47This infused our content with mission-driven substance, increased our clout in the film
01:53industry, and created brand revenue opportunities and bigger partnership opportunities for broadcast.
01:58For 2018, Refinery29 has partnered with TNT to amplify this mission and further champion
02:05the next generation of women in film while pushing the boundaries of innovative storytelling.
02:14We'll see you next time.
