00:03My mom's Argentinian and in Argentina it is the cultural norm to live with your
00:07parents through school and through adulthood. Argentinian culture is not the
00:11only culture that practices this tradition. I wanted to talk to my friend
00:14Christine who lives at home with her parents who are from India. I come from
00:17an Indian household and my parents were both born and raised in India then they
00:21came here in their 20s. Then I went to college and the thing in college that
00:25was a little nerve-wracking for me was so many people were dorming and it was
00:29so normal it was so regular but I got nervous my parents asked me like do you
00:33want a dorm and I said no I think I'm okay. I figured if there was anything
00:38going on at school that I couldn't handle I wouldn't have to call my parents I
00:41could just be home and tell them what was going on and that made me feel a lot
00:46more comfortable with my decision. Wanting to go to frat parties was an issue at
00:50first because my mom was like you know what they do in these parties you're 18
00:5517 they're gonna be drinking there's gonna be drugs you can't go do this blah
00:59blah blah at those times I'll be like maybe I should have just dorm because I
01:02could just tell her I'm hanging out and I could just do whatever I want. Talk to me
01:06a little about your upbringing and did they make you feel like you had to stay
01:09at home in the beginning? So in India it's very normal to live with your parents as
01:14a woman you once you get married you would leave and go live with your in-laws
01:18and your husband from that side but family always stays together. What do you
01:22think the biggest misconception is about living at home with your parents?
01:24Is that you're lazy? That you're not trying to do anything with your life and
01:29you're trying to mooch off your parents? Which I don't think is true because some
01:32parents like mine don't want us to go. You do what makes your life easier whatever
01:36helps you move forward sometimes you have to backtrack a little bit to refocus
01:42reprioritize so you can move forward. Seeing Christine's enthusiasm about living
01:46at home with her parents really struck a chord with me but it's all really
01:49Christine has ever known. What about someone who's moved out and then move back in
01:53with their parents? I wanted to talk to my friend Abby who moved back into her
01:57parents place after she moved out and believe me it's a full house. I live at
02:02home with my parents my grandma Chip and my two cats and of course my husband. Of
02:08course. Of course you can't forget him I usually do but he's there. My husband and I
02:12live together in Manhattan and in Brooklyn and then we decided to move back in with
02:18my parents only temporarily. Six months was the cap at age 24. And now how old are you?
02:24Oh my gosh I'm 30. What are some of the perks of living at home? There are certain
02:28chores I absolutely hate to do like ironing. I hate ironing. What else? So I do
02:34live a very low-waste lifestyle and if you think about it it's the most efficient and
02:38sustainable to have multiple generations in one house. Do you think that part of
02:42you is less of a full adult? 100% absolutely but I don't mind that. Why did
02:51you move back home? After graduating law school I didn't secure my job yet my
02:55husband was working on Long Island my parents have a house on Long Island and
02:59it just made sense in that temporary period of figuring out where I was gonna
03:02work to move back home. But there must be part of you that it isn't just purely
03:06financial that you genuinely like living with your parents and your grandma. I love my
03:09mom I love living at home so part of me just thinks I do love it. They think a
03:15lot of parents would love to have their kids back. Oh absolutely and I totally
03:19judged anyone who moved back home after college. Coming to that realization is
03:23kind of hard that my husband and I are both working we're both successful but if
03:27we had an apartment we wouldn't be able to save for our future. Having made a
03:31point living in a multi-generational home can definitely save a lot of
03:35resources and money. Saving money was the original reason for my friend Matthew to
03:39move back home with his parents but he ended up staying for reasons beyond that.
03:43I live at home with my parents and my two younger siblings. I attended my
03:47university and unfortunately my parents couldn't pay for my education so I had
03:51to take some loans out and I knew once I graduated it would be smart to live at
03:56home, save up, pay off my loans ASAP and then pursue my music career which I'm
04:01now doing full-time. Tell me a little bit about your dad. You know my father's been
04:05really sick. He's had a couple of operations like he spent a couple of
04:09months in the hospital so you know I wanted to step up and set a good
04:13example for my younger sisters. I'm the next one up as far as being a man in the
04:17house so. And how's it like with your parents living with them like going back in
04:20afterwards because I'm assuming college you were living with all your friends.
04:23Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know like being Latino like family is so important and my
04:28parents we have a great relationship. It's almost like a privilege honestly in a Latin
04:32household like it's open to everyone in the family so I'll come home from work
04:37and five of my theos will be home and I think the best part of living at home is
04:42just having that home-cooked meal with that secret ingredient of love. So what
04:47are some of the cons of living at home? Oh man, cons. There are a lot of cons. Like I
04:52said I live with my younger siblings. This girl she was talking about her
04:56roommates and I was like here comes the question like living at home what's the
05:00situation like she was like so tell me about your roommates. I was like oh man I
05:04have two roommates one of them's in fifth grade the other one's in college they're
05:09my younger sisters. Then she paused I was like these advertisers are great though
05:13like like we should order this. I used to feel ashamed about living at home with my
05:17parents but after talking with everyone today I realized that it's a lot more
05:21common than I thought and there are a lot of benefits. I was supposed to go
05:25apartment hunting this week but maybe now I won't. Mom will you have me forever?
