00:00My name is Sage Adams.
00:02Do it again.
00:05My name is Sage Adams and my artist-in-residence is called Details Later.
00:12There's so many different ways to be authentically yourself,
00:16and art has so much to do with those ways.
00:20My art teacher, when I was in high school, started telling me,
00:24like, you keep saying you can't draw things realistically,
00:26so why don't you think about it as just shapes,
00:28and think about it as just colors and objects,
00:31and not necessarily things.
00:33If you think about it as, like, a person or a dog,
00:36it gets a little complicated,
00:37and all your preconceived notions of that thing
00:39try to make it onto the paper at the same time.
00:41But if you're just thinking about it as, like,
00:42wow, that's a square with a triangle on it,
00:44then it gives you a little bit more room to, like,
00:46really get creative and really, like, make a thing pop.
00:51I like to use really basic materials
00:53because, like, I believe in accessibility and art,
00:55and so it's really hard to, like, initially off-bat
00:57tell someone, hey, like, here's 10-step oil painting,
01:00like, get with it, learn it.
01:02And so I try to, like, use cray-paws
01:03and crayons and pencils.
01:07The kind of stripped-back nature of it all
01:09maintains, like, me because I'm very, like, tactile.
01:14I'm very, like, go skateboard, go read a book,
01:16go paint something.
01:17I'm very involved.
01:20I hope that people experience any sort of piece
01:23that they can find from my art.
01:25I want them to think that, wow, like, art is everywhere,
01:27and I could be everywhere.
01:30For someone who obviously has many multiplicities,
01:32this is, like, a really amazing time to be alive.
01:35As an artist, as a curator, as a thinker,
01:38as a black person, as a woman,
01:41all of those intersects kind of bring me to this place,
01:45and I'm excited for everyone to kind of see that
01:47and understand that and understand this new reality
01:52because there's so many ways to be you.
