Every time we manage to execute an acceptable at-home mani, we practically take a victory lap. No matter how hard we concentrate, putting on polish is a delicate process — and don't even get us started on how tough it is to paint our paws using our nondominant hand.

So, when we heard about a new device that promised to take the pain out of the polish-application process, we jumped at the chance to give it a go. Vanessa, our associate news and entertainment editor, took to the Beauty Test Lab to deliver the verdict: Is this tool the trick to getting perfectly polished tips?

00:03What is a plie? It's a ballet thing, right? Like, I hope no one's body moves like this.
00:09That's terrible. Maybe Beyonce, she can probably move like that.
00:16Today I'm testing out the julep plie wand. It's supposed to help you paint your nails with your non-dominant
00:23hand,
00:23so we're going to try that out. You just take any julep nail polish, I have this fun color today,
00:28and you replace it with this special plie wand cap. It has a hole inside, and then you just, magnetic
00:36magic.
00:37I'm going to paint my nails using my dominant hand, which is my left hand.
00:41When you're using your dominant hand, you're supposed to just keep the wand straight like this.
00:49This is my right hand that I painted with my dominant hand, and then when you want to switch to
00:54your other hand,
00:56well, you plie and you bend it like this, and it's supposed to make you better.
01:01I don't know. I don't really feel like this is doing anything for me.
01:06I'm feeling worse about my manicure skills.
01:08So what do I think of this product? It wasn't hard to use, but I was very aware that I
01:12was holding it the entire time,
01:14so I think it kind of psyched me out, but I don't think it really added any benefit.
01:17It's probably not essential for an at-home manicure.
