00:00We've got a big game coming up this weekend,
00:03and it is going to be the University of Miami against Notre Dame.
00:08You know, I've been asked all week long so far to go on numerous shows.
00:15Sills, what makes this rivalry great?
00:18This rivalry, without a doubt, is one of the most energetic.
00:24It is one of the most passionate.
00:25It is one of the most hated rivals of all time.
00:31Look, my rivalries back in the day were Florida State and Florida,
00:36but there was something about Notre Dame, and it created convicts and Catholics.
00:42Can you imagine doing something like that today in today's society,
00:46calling all of us at the University of Miami convicts?
00:50I think we had more Catholics at the time than Notre Dame did on their football team.
00:56But it started when we killed them 58-7 in the Orange Bowl.
01:01We beat the pants off him.
01:03It was Jerry Fouts' final game, and we just crushed them.
01:07And I remember Eric Parsegian on the air, all upset,
01:11because he was there with Musburger saying,
01:13why did you guys continue to run reverses with one minute left in the game?
01:20We beat them by 51 points.
01:22Only the 1944 Army game, where they beat Notre Dame 59-0,
01:27was a bigger beating of that program.
01:30We're second.
01:31We beat them by 51 points.
01:33And then you had the next game.
01:35We beat them 24-0.
01:36It was Lou Holtz's first time playing against us,
01:39and we waxed them in 87, 24-0.
01:43And then everybody remembers the 88 game, where it was 31-30,
01:47and it was convicts versus Catholics.
01:50The rivalry had to be stopped.
01:53Both programs thought it was in the best interest
01:57because of the death threats that the players and the coaches were getting
02:01during that time.
02:03Actual death threats.
02:04We would get letters from Notre Dame fans,
02:07and the same thing when it came to players that played at Notre Dame.
02:12Both ADs and the coaches,
02:15Lou Holtz and Jimmy Johnson thought it would be in the best interest
02:19that we stopped the program.
02:21We didn't play for a long time because that rivalry got so heated and so hated
02:26that I can't tell you how many times, still to this day,
02:29I get called a convict because of convicts versus Catholics.
02:35ESPN did a documentary on the 30 for 30 on it, and it's true.
02:39They were calling us convicts the entire time because Miami,
02:43we did have issues down there at that program at the time when it came
02:47to some issues that were off the field.
02:49There's no question about it.
02:51And Notre Dame ended up taking that and making this rivalry what it is today.
02:56Now, many of the kids can only read about it.
02:59Many of the kids today only know about the documentaries,
03:03but living it during that time,
03:05could you imagine if we had social media during that time
03:10when how heated that thing was?
03:12When we went to Notre Dame,
03:14I can't tell you how many times the people there at Notre Dame,
03:17it was just not a friendly atmosphere.
03:20It really wasn't a friendly atmosphere when we played against those guys
03:25in South Bend.
03:26And when they came down to Miami and they came down to the Orange Bowl,
03:29it was like that.
03:31This game this weekend is going to rehash all of those great memories
03:36and all of those great things that really made that rivalry great.
03:41I think this thing should be played each and every single year.
03:44I think it's going to get massive ratings.
03:46I think it's going to be one of the most anticipated football games of the year.
03:51And I do think the winner of this football game heading into the following Monday
03:56or Sunday when it comes to the ratings,
03:59I think the number one team in the country is going to come out of this football game
04:02on Saturday in South Bend.
04:04I like Marcus Freeman.
04:06I think Marcus Freeman, without a doubt,
04:08is one of the best coaches in the country.
04:11And Marcus Freeman makes Notre Dame likable.
04:14I think he's done a spectacular job.
04:16And I think Mario Cristobal has done a remarkable job at bringing Miami back.
04:22We haven't been in a game like this in 25 years.
