00:20Let us pray.
00:23Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
00:26Son of the living God, God most high.
00:30Who has created me and formed my soul
00:33after your own divine image and likeness
00:36and has made me capable of everlasting happiness.
00:40Grant that I may serve you, my Lord, my God and my Father,
00:44with a faithful heart,
00:46that I may fight against my sins with a holy hatred
00:50and that all sinful passion and affection
00:53being destroyed within me,
00:56I may be renewed in perfect innocence of life.
01:01Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:04who has given me for my use the heaven, the earth, the sea
01:08and all the things that are in them
01:10and has granted them for my service and comfort.
01:16Permit I beseech you, O Lord,
01:18that I may never abuse your creatures,
01:21but that all the works of your hands may tell of your goodness
01:25and may lead me to admire, to know and to love you.
01:31Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:34who, out of your affection for me,
01:37granted me to be born in the true Christian faith
01:41and has mercifully brought me up from the beginning of my life,
01:45supplying me with food and the other necessaries
01:48for the nourishment and support of my body.
01:51May my heart find no relish except in and through you.
01:56May you alone possess my innermost soul.
02:00May I exceedingly hunger for you, the bread of heaven,
02:04and thirst for you, the fountain of life,
02:07so that this life's exile ended,
02:10I may deserve to be satisfied with the joys of your eternal perfection.
02:17Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
02:20who, up until this time,
02:22has preserved and delivered me from countless dangers of soul and body,
02:26even when I abused your gifts, not deserting me.
02:33Illuminate my heart, I beseech you,
02:35with the brightness of your grace,
02:38the truly perceiving your goodness to me
02:40and my own ingratitude toward you.
02:44I may bemoan myself,
02:47I may be hateful in my own sight,
02:50but I may please you,
02:52my creator and my only redeemer,
02:55in all things.
02:58Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
03:01who, when I lie immersed in the most loathsome vices
03:05and was leading a most ungodly life,
03:09in your long-suffering,
03:10bore with me for such a long time
03:12and brought me to repentance,
03:15grant that my acceptable contrition and holy works,
03:19I may expiate the stains of my past sin,
03:23and that from now on I may lead a life of purity
03:26and love you above all things
03:29with most burning love.
03:33Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
03:36who, when I was on the brink of the very precipice
03:39and just within the jaws of hell,
03:42did not permit me to perish,
03:44but called me, though deaf,
03:46and trying to run from you to the way of salvation.
03:51Grant that from now on I may follow after you
03:55with humble devotion
03:56and with a joyful heart
03:58correspond to your holy inspirations
04:01with from my heart
04:03farewell to all things
04:06and may cleave inseparably to you alone.
04:12Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
04:15who always directed me,
04:17the vilest of sinners,
04:19has protected me,
04:20has looked upon me with the eyes of mercy,
04:23and still so fondly supports
04:25and cherishes me with your goodness.
04:28Despite my daily transgressions,
04:30as if forgetful of all others,
04:32you cared for me alone.
04:36Grant that I also may love you most ardently,
04:40leaving all transitory things for your sake,
04:43and may think of you alone,
04:45and may with a ready mind and in all places
04:48follow and perform your holy will.
04:52Amen.
04:57O Lord, open our lips
04:59and our mouths shall sing your praise.
05:09O be joyful in the Lord,
05:13O be blessed,
05:16serve the Lord with gladness,
05:19and come in one's prayers
05:22and with your song.
05:26Be sure that the Lord,
05:29He is God,
05:32He is God.
05:33It is He that has given us
05:35that not we ourselves.
05:37We are His people
05:40and the sheep of His pasture.
05:45O do your way
05:47into His peace with my tree,
05:51and into His God's great place,
05:55be thankful to Him.
05:59and speak to the Lord of His name.
06:04For the Lord is gracious,
06:08His mercy is everlasting,
06:13and His mercy is everlasting,
06:19and His mercy is everlasting.

11:45As Jesus was passing by, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.
11:50His disciples asked him, Rabbi, who committed the sin that caused him to be born blind,
11:58this man or his parents?
12:02Jesus answered, neither this man nor his parents sinned, but he was born blind so that the
12:09acts of God may be revealed through what happens to him.
12:13We must perform the deeds of the one who sent me as long as it is daytime.
12:19Night is coming when no one can work.
12:22As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
12:29Having said this, he spat on the ground and made some mud with his saliva.
12:35He smeared the mud on the blind man's eyes and said to him, Go and wash in the pool of
12:42the sun, which is translated, sent.
12:45And so the man went away and washed, and came back to see him.
12:52Then the neighbors and the people who had seen him previously as a beggar began saying,
12:58Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?
13:02Some people said, This is the man.
13:05While others said, No, but it looks like him.
13:10The man himself kept insisting, I am the one.
13:16And so they asked him, How then were you made to see?
13:21He replied, The man called Jesus made mud, smeared it on my eyes and told me, Go to the
13:28pool of Siloam and wash.
13:30So I went and washed and was able to see.
13:36They said to him, But where is this man?
13:39He replied, I don't know.
13:43They brought the man who used to be blind to the Pharisees.
13:47Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and caused him to see was a Sabbath.
13:54So the Pharisees asked him again how he had gained his sight.
13:58He replied, He put mud on my eyes and I washed and now I can see.
14:06Then some of the Pharisees began to say, This man is not from God because he does not observe
14:12the Sabbath.
14:14But others suggested, How can a man who is a sinner perform such miraculous signs?
14:20And so there was a division among them.
14:25So again they asked the man who used to be blind.
14:29So what do you say about him since he caused you to see?
14:34He is a prophet, the man replied.
14:38Then the Jewish religious leaders refused to believe he had really been blind and had gained his sight.
14:44Until at last they summoned the parents of the man who had become able to see.
14:51They asked the parents, Is this your son who we say was born blind?
14:56How is it then that he can now see?
15:00His parents replied, We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.
15:05But we do not know how he is able to see.
15:09Nor do we know how he was caused to see.
15:13Ask him.
15:14He is a mature adult and he can speak for himself.
15:20His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jewish religious leaders.
15:26For the leaders had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Christ would be expelled from the
15:32synagogues.
15:34For this reason his parents said, He is a mature adult.
15:39Ask him.
15:42So they summoned the man who used to be blind a second time and said to him,
15:47Promise before God to tell the truth.
15:50We know that this man is a sinner.
15:53He replied, I do not know whether that man is a sinner or not.
16:00For they know I do know one thing.
16:02That although I was blind I can now see.
16:08Then they said to him, What did he do to you?
16:12How did he cause you to see?
16:16He answered, I have already told you and you did not listen.
16:21Why do you want to hear it again?
16:23You people don't want to become his disciples too, do you?
16:29They heaped insults on him saying, You are his disciple.
16:34We are disciples of Moses.
16:36We know that God spoke with Moses.
16:39But we do not know where this man comes from.
16:42The man replied, This is indeed a remarkable thing.
16:47That you do not know where he comes from and yet he caused me to see.
16:52We know that God doesn't listen to sinners.
16:54But if anyone is devout and does his will, God listens to him.
17:00Never before has anyone heard of someone causing a man born blind to see.
17:06If this man were not from God, he could not do anything.
17:13They replied, You were born in sinfulness and yet you presume to teach us.
17:19And they threw him out.
17:24Jesus heard that they had thrown him out.
17:26And so he found the man and said to him, Do you believe in the Son of Man?
17:33The man replied, And who is he, sir, that I might believe in him?
17:40Jesus told him, You have seen him.
17:43He is the one speaking with you.
17:47He said, Lord, I believe.
17:50And he worshipped him.
17:54Jesus said, For judgment I have come into this world.
17:59So that those who do not see may gain their sight.
18:02And the ones who see may become blind.
18:08This is the word of the Lord.
18:11Thanks be to God.
18:17This passage opens with the comment that Jesus, with his followers,
18:21happened to pass by a blind man.
18:24One who had been so since birth.
18:28We should note that we are not told, as was the case in other miracles,
18:31that he asked for help.
18:34But first of all the disciples asked why the man was blind.
18:39The response of Jesus was that the man was blind,
18:42in order that he could be made to see the true light.
18:49You can see the heart of Jesus going out to this man.
18:52And the reaction of Jesus was immediate.
18:56It is possible to feel him walking over to the man,
18:59while still discussing the answer to the disciples' question.
19:04And for me this is the key to the passage.
19:08Jesus was loving and compassionate beyond belief.
19:12He could never stop working.
19:14He could not pass this man without stopping to help him.
19:18More so, because he was passing by, we see that he was on his place from one place to another.
19:25But even when he was travelling, he stopped and spent as long as it was going to take.
19:32For we read in verse 35 that Jesus was still in the area, and the man was converted.
19:41The Pharisees worked themselves up into such a lather that the blind man, or the man who was once blind,
19:48was running rings around them in their arguments.
19:51And he could see that they were stubborn and beyond listening.
19:56Not only did Jesus cure the man's physical affliction, but also his sinful state.
20:02He recognised Jesus as Lord and became a believer, despite the fact that in doing so,
20:08he was to go on to become an outcast of his community.
20:14Following Jesus is both a miraculous experience and a painful one.
20:19For you stand to get ostracised by your friends, your family and your community.
20:26The bottom line is that people in general do not like being confronted by the truth.
20:31And if you embrace it, they will reject you.
20:39The instinct that there is a connection between sin and penalty is universal and from God.
20:48The grossest forms of sacrifice that have been made in the names of religion, horrible, at their root in a
20:55true instinct.
20:57The revelation of God in Christ came not to uproot this belief, but to interpret, to guide and to lead
21:05it to bear fruit.
21:07Modernly sickness is, to a certain extent, the lot of every single one of us.
21:13And we may not show ourselves anxious to connect it with the notion of punishment or specific acts.
21:20We have learnt, too, since the days of the first Christians, something more of the laws of hope than they
21:25were acquainted with.
21:27And this knowledge tends to reduce, within narrower limits, the afflictions which we designate as judgments.
21:35But the tendency to view sin and punishment as different things, and the connection between them as arbitrary,
21:43is unhappily not less strong in the full light of the present century than in the glimmering dawn in which
21:50the first Christians walked.
21:55Jesus said, Neither has this man sinned nor his parents.
22:01We are to understand this answer with reference to the question which provoked it.
22:08The man had, we are sure, been a sinner, and also his parents.
22:14But there was no special unrighteousness, either in the parents or the child, which had brought upon them this sad
22:22calamity.
22:26The works of God were to be made manifest in this man, not one work only.
22:32Therefore not the miracle of a sudden restoration of sight by itself.
22:37The miracle is a sign, a witness, as it were, of the nature of him who wrote it.
22:45The incident which opened the eyes of the poor vagrant is one of those which have let in light upon
22:50a sin-blinded world.
22:54In all evil, in disease and in disorder, is a work of God made manifest.
23:00Because we see these things to be evil through the light which is his.
23:06The sin that is seen to be sin, the disease and death, are recognised as the enemies of the divine
23:12order.
23:14And so we are aware, just like St Paul, of a body of death to which we are bound to
23:19prisoners.
23:21That, in fine, we feel the punishment of sin is a matter for profound thankfulness.
23:29The principle which makes work, Christian, is the will and the glory of God.
23:35In the midst of our working life, in the midst of our religious thought, in our times of devotion, in
23:41our times of prayer,
23:42Jesus speaks to us and bears his unflinching testimony, calling upon the Christian to persevere, making his work true.
23:54This he does in three ways.
23:57He does it because he has robed himself in our humanity.
24:03Putting on our humanity, Jesus added a dignity to our nature.
24:08It was made in the image of the eternal.
24:11It was created, indeed, with a stamp upon it which even original sin could not wipe out altogether.
24:20But Jesus, through the Incarnation, has done more.
24:23He has robed himself, the Most High God in that nature.
24:28In that way, he has added dignity.
24:31And by the fact that you have been dignified by your nature being taken into God,
24:36by that fact, you are taught that the dignity of that nature is never satisfied,
24:41unless entirely you aim in your work to do God's will and to set forth God's glory.
24:49So he has borne and is bearing his weakness.
24:55He bore it further by himself toiling and teaching in that nature.
25:00He showed it to you and me, not only in its dignity, but in its power.
25:07The power of human nature is all but infinite, but all infinite as seen in the work that it can
25:14do,
25:16when it is assisted by the power which our blessed Master exerted most, the power of God.
25:23You have, in a sense, power to do even as God does, rising up into the life of God.
25:33And need it be added that he witnessed it by his death, not only by being robed in humanity,
25:40not only by showing the power of humanity to God, but by dying in this humanity,
25:47by exhibiting to us in this way the immensity of the value that God placed upon it.
25:53He taught us its only end in labor.
25:58If the Christian is to do his work, it does not matter about the dimensions of its outward expression,
26:04it does not matter about the texture of the material.
26:07The great point for you and me to see is the principle lying behind it to be real,
26:14one that is maintained in its reality by the grace of the Blessed Spirit,
26:18by the example of our Divine Redeemer, that principle being, in its aim and object,
26:28the will and the glory of God.
26:50GATHERING Dよ
26:51We praise you, O God, and pray now the truth to be our Lord.
