00:00I was actually thinking about this.
00:02Do you dream about your games?
00:05Do you remember your dreams?
00:08Yeah, I don't.
00:09No, no.
00:10I do remember dreams and that, but it's rarely about games and that.
00:14Yeah, but dream's different.
00:15What he might do is what happens, like I say, if I have a bad round of golf,
00:19I lay in bed and I just keep replaying the same hole over and over and over.
00:26You know what I mean?
00:27So I'm guessing that's what's happening.
00:28You're not dreaming, but you're ruminating and it's freaking haunting you.
00:33Oh, yeah, that's consistent.
00:36Right, right.
00:37Was there anything from last night that particularly irked you?
00:40I know he wasn't happy.
00:41I mean, I know you don't want to share all the inner details,
00:44but I'm sure there's some things that are pretty obvious.
00:47Yeah, I think it was just one of those nights where it was like when you go back
00:54through all the different circumstances of getting down in the game
00:58and the bounces that go against us and now you're in, dig yourself a hole
01:04and then you come back and then, you know, another one goes in
01:07and it's in off Marty's stick and you're just like, jeez.
01:14So it's like you have to be careful about looking at it and just taking a step back
01:20and, okay, one of those nights, even though it's incredibly frustrating,
01:24disappointing, you're pissed off, but also I liked a lot of the things that we did
01:31and there's just a lot of unfortunate bounces that went against us last night
01:35and went Dallas' way.
01:36Well, that's a little easier to absorb then, actually.
01:39If you feel like it's not so much self-inflicted, we're idiots kind of night, you know.
01:45Yeah, no, I absolutely agree.
01:49It's just you don't want to drop points at home and you don't want to lose two in a row
01:53at home
01:54and all of the above, so you're pissed off.
01:58Yeah.
01:59You feel like you should win that game and Dallas is a really good team.
02:02You're not taking anything away, but you feel like you need to win that hockey game
02:06and we didn't find a way to do that.
02:08Right.
02:08So I saw a statistic on Russian Machine Never Breaks about goals more than expected
02:15and Logan Thompson was at 2.68, Charlie Lindgren 0.17.
02:20When your goalies aren't playing as well as you'd expect, what can you do?
02:26We can just support them.
02:27I mean, yeah, we can support them.
02:30We're a team and those guys have been a massive part of our success over the last couple years
02:37and won us a lot of hockey games.
02:38So on nights that maybe it's not their absolute top level of play, we still can win those games.
02:47And so I don't look at it as a goaltending or them struggling or whatever it might be.
02:52It's we can do things better as a team to help insulate them and help support them
02:59and find different ways to win.
03:02But those guys both are huge parts of our team and great goaltenders and they'll be fine.
03:07So I was also looking at Tom Wilson's effect in the game yesterday and apparently it was
03:15kind of rough puck luck that when Willie was on the ice and five on five, he had 17 of
03:22the
03:2222 shot attempts, all 11 scoring chances and were outscored 1-0 in those minutes.
03:28Yeah, and that's a really good example of exactly what I was sort of talking about to lead off
03:33is if you break Willie's game down and his line's game down and even Stromer's line that I think
03:40ends up being minus three, if you go into their shifts and watch, you're like, jeez,
03:47they did this well, this well, this well.
03:49What a scoring chance here.
03:50What a scoring chance here.
03:51What a scoring chance here.
03:52And the next thing you know, it goes down the other way and there's one sort of bounce
03:56this way and it ends up in the back of the net and you're just like, sometimes you're
04:01going to have those nights.
04:01They're frustrating when you go through them, especially when, you know, you feel like this
04:06is a rebound game at home.
04:08But we'll take what we need to out of it, X's and O's strategy wise and move on to Florida.
04:15What's the reaction of a player, especially a goalie, when he comes to the bench after you
04:21pull him?
04:21Does he say anything to you?
04:23What is that?
04:24No, no, they're, they're, they're pros.
04:27I mean, they, they get it once it's usually around that, the, the three, four, five, that's
04:33where they, they know when they're in their heads.
04:36Yeah.
04:36Yeah.
04:36I mean, it's not always definitively at, at four, every goalie is pulled that three, every
04:42goalie is pulled.
04:43It's, it's circumstance.
04:44Right.
04:45And they know, you know, usually have an idea of, okay, this, I might be coming out.
04:50But, um, and the backup, the same thing kind of knows like, oh, okay, we're, we're down
04:55three, nothing here.
04:56Coach may make a change just to change momentum and switch things up.
05:01Right.
05:02So they, they know what's coming.
05:03And, and internally, like these guys are such pros, even when they go through adversity
05:10that they're, they're able to handle that in the moment, compartmentalize it.
05:15And, and, you know, just reset it.
05:18It's, it's not their night.
05:19And then they move on to, to tomorrow.
05:21And how do I get better?
05:22Part of the deal for the next one.
05:23Yeah.
05:24What do the two goalies do differently?
05:26What do you mean?
05:28Again, like, is there anything that they do different as goalies?
05:33Like technically do differently?
05:35Yeah.
05:35Yeah.
05:36What makes them different?
05:37Yeah.
05:38Tons.
05:39Like, um, I'll give you an example.
05:41So the, the position, like you just look at the goalie in the, in his gear and, and Logan
05:46catches the other way and Charlie catches the other way, but I won't even talk about
05:49that style of play.
05:52Um, goalies can be very, very different, which to the common fan, they'd be like, what's
05:58different.
05:59They just look like they're wearing the same equipment and protecting the net.
06:02So last night, Jake Ottinger, for example, bigger guy, tall, he's probably six, four.
06:08He's an extremely aggressive goalie.
06:10So what that means is he pushes way out on shooters past his crease.
06:16So he plays way out.
06:19So he cuts that it's called cutting down the angle.
06:22And so there's not, you don't see much net when you're looking at him, but where potentially
06:27you can expose him is if you make a pass to the backside, he's way out of his net.
06:32There's a wide open net there.
06:35And then you have other goalies that play a little bit deeper.
06:37So they play inside their crease and they're less aggressive.
06:40So they, there's more net you see when you're looking at them in the net and you're about
06:45to shoot on them, but there's less opportunity for lateral plays that end up in empty nets.
06:50If, if, uh, if I'm making any sense, no, I get that.
06:53I'm wondering between Logan and Charlie, what's the difference?
06:57Uh, those two, I mean, there, there's my new, like I'd be out of my realm.
07:01If I start to break down their individual game, like Logan, I'm not going to get too much
07:08into it, but basically Logan plays very deep in his net and he's been very successful at
07:15that through his career because he has world-class reactionary.
07:19So he can play, you can see net, but he is so fast at reacting and anticipating where pucks
07:26are going and where players are shooting.
07:28So he plays a little bit deeper.
07:30Um, Charlie's a little bit more of your athletic.
07:33He's going to make these acrobatic saves left to right.
07:39He's quick to get across.
07:40He all of a sudden is on the back door.
07:42So he's a little bit more, um, if for layman's terms, I would, I would go, he, he moves a
07:48lot
07:49more and Logan's a little bit more patient and plays a little bit deeper in his net.
07:53So at the end of two, when you go into that second intermission, I think you guys were down
07:58five, one at one point, but you cut it to five, three.
08:01How were you feeling?
08:02What were you saying to the guys, did the guys feel like, okay, third period is going
08:05to be ours?
08:07A hundred percent.
08:09Coaching staff in the coach's room, in the locker room, when I went in and spoke to the
08:13guys, I could feel we were confident, like we were going to get two and maybe three and
08:17win that game in regulation.
08:19So there was, um, felt like we have momentum, felt like we were in a, in a good spot to
08:25mount a comeback in the third period.
08:27But the, the one we, we get going there and then it gets to, um, it gets the six going
08:35in off Marty's just, just a bad break.
08:37I mean, both those goals, the one off Charlie's knob that I think was going wide.
08:43And then it ends up tipping into the net and the one off Marty's stick that goes in the
08:47back of the net.
08:48I mean, you can, you can mount a comeback and you feel like you're coming, but eventually
08:54it becomes too much to overcome in a 60 minute hockey game.
08:57And that's what I felt like it was last night.
08:58But even though we're right there, we've, we've got a chance to tie that game six on
09:01five and, and, um, yeah, I get the game to overtime.
09:05Talking to Spencer Carberry, Caps head coach presented by the centers for advanced orthopedics,
09:10more physicians, more locations, more advanced care centered around one thing.
09:14You visit cfaortho.com.
09:16So you have a few days off until you play Florida.
09:19What, what do the next couple of days look like?
09:22So today's an off day for the group.
09:24And then tomorrow we'll get back to work, uh, practice day and then, uh, early afternoon
09:29game, uh, against Florida.
09:31What's an off day look like for Spencer Carberry?
09:34I will do school drop off.
09:36Then I'll, uh, head into the, uh, practice facility and get, get all the prep, uh, and
09:42post game stuff done from last night, prep for tomorrow's practice.
09:46Nice.
09:46That's a real quick, real quick question.
09:49I just, I assume it's just for depth within the system, but I saw you did pick up a goalie
09:53a couple of days ago.
09:53Can you tell us about that?
09:55Yeah, we, uh, we made a move to, to grab, um, a goaltender Remy, um, in New Jersey.
10:02He was actually formerly in Dallas's system for a while, coincidentally.
10:07Um, so just, yeah, for, for depth at the position and, and feel like, um, adding him and, and
10:16being able to bring him in as a part of the group with Logan and Chucky and, um, we'll see
10:21where it goes.
10:22I mean, real quick, uh, you know, we've been focusing on, on the negatives because the
10:26defense, but offensively you guys, I mean, you gotta be happy with where you guys, especially
10:30with the new, the new guys that you guys acquired, um, of what they're doing offensively.
10:35Yeah.
10:36All of a sudden, I think Jordan Cairo is kind of hit his stride.
10:39He's now leading our team in scoring.
10:41Yep.
10:42Um, he, he's the last four or five games.
10:45He's been excellent for us.
10:46So that's been great to see Cole Hudson coming along nicely is really continues to develop
10:53and get better and better and better.
10:55And we're only, you know, 14 games into his rookie season.
10:58So that's been great to see.
11:00And obviously Tucky's off to a hot start, had a rough, their, their line sort of a little
11:05like I was talking about, had a little bit of bad luck last night, but he's off to a great
11:08start.
11:08So a lot of the new guys, Boone Jenner scored again last night.
11:12He's been a great fit.
11:13So a lot of the new guys have fit in.
11:15Well, one, one of our guys, uh, tweeted me and said, ask him why Leno's not getting more
11:20minutes.
11:21I remember at one point I felt like you, you were like, man, maybe a couple too, too many
11:25turnovers, some kind of thing, you know, limit a little bit, little point being made maybe
11:29earlier in the season.
11:31I think there was something like that.
11:33No, not, not at all.
11:34Like Leno, Leno is a, he's going to be an unbelievable player for us for a long time.
11:40And minute wise, like, yeah, you have to remember, okay, so let's go down our right
11:45shot, right wingers, Alex Stock.
11:47Yeah.
11:47Okay.
11:48So he's, he's a pretty good player, right?
11:50Right.
11:51Okay.
11:52Okay.
11:52Now let's go to our leading scorer, Jordan Kairou.
11:55Right.
11:55Okay.
11:56Right shot, right winger.
11:57Okay.
11:57So now let's keep moving along.
12:00Tom Wilson.
12:01Right.
12:01So would people go like, Hey, play Leonard more minutes than Tom Wilson.
12:05Well, Tom plays power play penalty kill five on five.
12:07So I just named you three right winger, right shots on our roster.
12:12And then there's another one.
12:14He wears number eight.
12:16Right.
12:17Alex.
12:18He's pretty good.
12:18He's a, yeah.
12:20So, and now always minutes have come down and Leno deserves to play some of those minutes
12:26and take those away.
12:27And Leno, they get a chance.
12:28Like we've been sort of flip flop in our power play units.
12:31He gets a chance to go out on the first unit last night.
12:34It didn't go well.
12:34It's okay him and how do you run in that unit with Dubois.
12:39But they'll, they'll continue to get opportunity and they'll continue to develop and get better
12:43and better and better.
12:44And he's an incredible young man and he's going to be a big part of our future and play
12:51a ton of minutes for us.
12:52Well, at least the, uh, the 1230 puck drop on Saturday is a home game.
12:55You don't have to fly down to Florida.
12:58That's a good thing.
12:59But we got to take advantage of these because we got a lot of road games, uh, coming up
13:04for the rest of the schedule as we continue to play home games.
13:07Right.
13:07Was it carbs that said that last time we had them on or was it will Dawkins that when
13:11you see a, like, Oh, you have a few home games, that's nice, but you just know you're
13:15going to pay, you're going to pay the debt down.
13:17Cause you know, you got to go on the road.
13:18Yeah.
13:19Yeah.
13:19A hundred percent.
13:20And even this stretch right here, like where you have three days and then you have another
13:23two days off, you're like, we're going to pay for this down the road.
13:27Right.
13:27Right.
13:27All right.
13:28Well hang in there.
13:28Enjoy it while you can.
13:29Thank you, coach.
13:30You always appreciate it.
13:32Okay.
13:32Thanks guys.
13:33Have a great rest of your week.
13:34All right.
13:34You too.
