US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance have acknowledged that the ongoing war in Iran heavily contributed to Republican losses in the US midterm elections, which saw Democrats gain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. While Vance pointed to the conflict, inflation, rising cost of living, and higher fuel prices as primary drivers of voter discontent, Trump maintained that he had no regrets regarding the military intervention launched alongside Israel to dismantle Tehran's nuclear capabilities. Trump asserted that stopping Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon remains vital for long-term security, even as short-term gasoline prices dragged down approval ratings. With Democrats now leading Congress, Trump has threatened to wield his presidential veto to block opposition legislation on taxation, spending, and immigration unless bipartisan agreements are reached, as Congress requires a two-thirds supermajority to override a presidential veto.

00:00From the U.S. midterm results is putting the Trump administration's Iran policy under scrutiny.
00:05Hours after Democrats scored significant victories, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has blamed the war
00:11for Republican losses, saying that many voters who backed them in 2024 switched sides in 2026.
00:18J.D. Vance has also pointed to the war, inflation, the cost of living and the U.S. policy towards
00:24Israel as key reasons behind voter anger. Trump deflected personal blame and acknowledged that
00:29the eight-month-old war in Iran heavily impacted Republican Party's performance. But he also
00:35admitted that Iran was a piece of it, noting that conflict launched alongside Israel in February
00:40to dismantle Tehran's nuclear program had dragged down his approval ratings. However, he firmly stated
00:46that he had no regrets. Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump defended his Iran policy, saying that
00:51people support his actions but were unwilling to bear the immediate cost of higher gasoline prices.
00:58I think it would destroy the Democrat Party if they did that. It was impeachment for no reason.
01:04What? For having a successful country. Our country is more successful now than at any time in its
01:08system. No, look, I mean, if I were on the ballot, we would have won. You saw the people that
01:12were packed,
01:13thousands and thousands of people at every rally. And if I was on the ballot, we would have won.
01:18But they just, you couldn't transfer that love. There was such love at those rallies. It was
01:22incredible. And we weren't able to transfer the love to candidates. I think it's largely true because
01:29it drove the gasoline up a little bit short term. And probably that's, probably it's true. But at the
01:36same time, if I had it to do again, I'd have to do it again. Because long term, it's the
01:40only answer.
01:44So U.S. President Donald Trump is now admitting that Iran war played a crucial role in the losses that
01:50the Republican Party has to face in the, had to face in the U.S. midterm elections. But he is
01:56also saying
01:57that he has no regrets. He would not have done anything differently and that it was necessary to stop
02:02Iran from having nukes. So that is what U.S. President is saying. On one hand, he's acknowledging
02:08that yes, Iran war did cost the Republicans the midterm elections. But he's also admitting that
02:15he has no regrets because that was something that was needed and he would not have done anything
02:19differently and he would have anyway carried out this war against Iran. And let's also understand
02:27what is Trump's veto power? Because we've been seeing how he has been threatening the Democrats that
02:31he'll be using the veto power. So let's understand what exactly is this veto power.
02:36So the U.S. Constitution allows President to wield veto. The President can't reject a bill passed by
02:42the Congress. And now the Congress is controlled by the Democrats, both the House of Representatives
02:46and the Senate as well. So the President can block a bill even after not from the House and the
02:52Senate,
02:52which are being controlled by the Democrats. So even if they approve a bill that can still be
02:57vetoed by the President, he can still block that bill. Trump can veto any bill he disagrees with.
03:02And this is exactly what he has said, that anything that he disagrees with, he'll use his veto power
03:08on that bill. Trump can let a bill die by not signing it. Trump can use veto threat to force
03:15Democrats
03:15into talks. And he's also mentioned about that, that how they will be making a deal. So he's already
03:21disclosed his strategy that how he will also be using veto and how he will get the Democrats
03:26to make a deal. Veto can block Democratic plan on taxes, spending immigration. So Democrats have
03:33also their own set of plan that they are planning, what they are planning now that they control the
03:38Senate and also the House of Representatives. And Congress can kill a veto with two-third margin
03:45in House and Senate. But here's a catch. Democrats will need the Republican help for the super
03:50majority, which is the two-third majority in the Congress. Veto is a powerful check on
03:56Congress, but not absolute. So that is exactly what Trump's veto power means and how it can
04:02be used. India Today Global's Pranay Padeh is now joining us on the story with more details.
04:07Pranay, a very good morning to you. So both President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D.
04:13Vance have admitted that how it is the Iran war that is to be blamed for the losses of the
04:18Republican Party. But there's a difference in the tone of both the leaders. On one hand,
04:23Donald Trump is admitting Iran war led to the losses, but he's also saying that he does not
04:28regret it. On the other hand, J.D. Vance is also talking about the rising cost of living
04:33that was the result of the Iran war.
04:36Good morning, Anjali. Not only that, Vice President J.D. Vance has also reposted President
04:41Donald Trump's comment on his social media posts. And it clearly shows that both Vice
04:48President and President of the United States agree that the Iran war contributed to the
04:52defeat of the Republican Party and this major setback. But having said that, we know that
04:58there have been differences on the initiation and the handling of this conflict between Vice
05:02President and President. But Vice President J.D. Vance is also one of the foremost negotiator
05:08appointed by President Donald Trump on Iran negotiations. And the negotiations are still
05:15on. He was sent to Islamabad to handle those negotiations a few months ago. And there are
05:21differences. So I'm sure there will be some more conversation between both the leaders
05:25to think about what exactly could be the way forward. Because J.D. Vance is being considered
05:30a candidate for the 2028 presidential run by the Republican Party. And a lot of things are
05:36right. Right. Thank you for joining us with those details. So J.D. Vance has also echoed
05:45Donald Trump's statement that how it was the Iran war that led to the defeat of the Republican
05:51Party in the U.S. midterm polls. Now with Democrats controlling the Congress, both the House of
05:57Representatives and also the Senate.
