00:00And a fire up chips to you. Good morning, 97.1.
00:05Eastern finally gets on the board and you've got to challenge it?
00:08Come on, just give them one.
00:10I'd like to know where TJ Lang is right now.
00:13Good morning. I've got to tell you exactly where he is.
00:16Sawing logs. Jim Costa, John Jansen, Heather Park, Gov, and Greg Behind the Glass.
00:20Man, Bud Mike back there training today.
00:22We have a loaded Thursday show because Thursdays mean you can win some money.
00:26Two Grand Slam means we've got the Thursday touchdown.
00:28Dear John and Ross Tucker.
00:31And John, we also have an update on Jack Campbell.
00:34We do.
00:35And obviously, you know, it's nice to be able to have not the complete update you would want,
00:42but things continue to trend positively.
00:44And he said, you know, hey, I've got full movement in my lower body,
00:48working on things in my upper body, and things are progressing well.
00:52I've always tried to frame this through his life as a person
00:57more than whether or not he'd ever play football again.
01:00There was a concern until you hear an update, will he ever walk again?
01:03And now you're hearing good things, you know?
01:05And it sounds like the thought is keep progressing and have full control of the upper body, too,
01:11which gives him a chance to live a much better full life, whether he plays football again.
01:16Right, yeah.
01:17So there's obviously a lot going on, and, you know, for the exact quote,
01:21it's I have full movement in my lower body, and I'm continuing to make progress with movement in my upper
01:26body.
01:26I know there's still work ahead, but I remain very optimistic.
01:31I'm taking things one day at a time, staying positive, and focusing on getting better.
01:35Yeah.
01:36So, yeah, it is positive.
01:39So hopefully things continue to trend in that direction.
01:43And we were at about the 72-hour mark when this came out, give or take, right?
01:47Yeah.
01:48You know, and the thought is any swelling starts to subside.
01:51Yeah, the spinal injuries, they say the first 72 hours are very critical.
01:55Things can be a little bit of a roller coaster, and, you know, they put the statement out just after.
01:59So, again, hopefully he continues to trend in that direction, and it sounds like hopefully he'll make a full recovery.
02:07Yes.
02:08I don't know what that means.
02:09Yeah.
02:09You know, is that just a full recovery for him to be able to function as a dad and husband,
02:13or is it a full recovery where he gets a chance to play again?
02:16Again, I'm less focused on if he plays again.
02:19You know?
02:20I just know how scary that could be.
02:22Most importantly, it's, you know, being able to live a regular life.
02:26Right.
02:26And the Lions will play games without him.
02:28Figure it out along the way.
02:30We do have some rumors, Lions, what they might do with the trade deadline.
02:34We'll get to that later in the show.
02:36We got Pistons to discuss as well.
02:39I already got calls flying in to talk about this basketball team.
02:42All right.
02:43Yeah.
02:43Hey, about lost last night.
02:45So.
02:47So, I don't know what your takeaway was, but that was essentially the Sixers full cast, right?
02:54It was.
02:55Was there somebody out the first time that they played him?
02:56Well, LeBron didn't play the first time, right?
02:59In Philly.
03:00Did he play the first time?
03:01I thought they were missing somebody in the first meeting.
03:04I don't know.
03:05But you saw everybody out there.
03:06Embiid missed.
03:07That's who it was.
03:08But you saw the full cast out there last night.
03:10So, it's Embiid.
03:11It's Maxi.
03:11It's LeBron.
03:12It's Jalen Brown, who had a very good first half, very good game.
03:16And it's like, even Edgecombe, who they loved a year ago, is in a more reserved role.
03:19But they can come at you.
03:20The takeaway I had is, they were hitting some tough shots.
03:23They have a lot of tough shot makers.
03:24They can score at all three levels.
03:26They're going to test anybody.
03:28Because they've got any given game, two or three of those guys can go off.
03:32And even if you're defending them well, they're going to get theirs.
03:35Yeah.
03:37And it was one of those where they just got down too much.
03:41You heard it in the update there.
03:43They got down 16.
03:45And if you're going to be able to win games like that, I know that NBA is all about streaks.
03:51And it's really about the last five minutes of the game.
03:54But it's really tough against an opponent like that to be able to come back from a deficit.
04:00Yeah, I mean, it really highlights that the Pistons don't have four or five guys that can go get their
04:04own shot.
04:06You know, they do.
04:07We don't.
04:08Cade started cold, especially from beyond the arc.
04:11Shot wasn't falling.
04:12And while Duncan Robinson is on fire.
04:15Yeah, the problem is he's not going to get his own offense.
04:19They don't have like a stars bringing it up.
04:21And there's teams don't have to respect him.
04:23Who else are you giving the ball to and say, hey, I need you to go get a tough bucket
04:26right now.
04:27I'll buy your lonesome.
04:28We're going to rotate the rock.
04:29We're going to get it over to you on the left wing.
04:31And you're going to just go do something and score.
04:33They don't have those guys.
04:35I thought the Sixers played with a lot of intent last night because they lost the first meeting.
04:40Yes, it's their only loss of the season.
04:42And I picked the Sixers to finish the top seed.
04:45I picked the Pistons to finish second.
04:47And the reason why was last night.
04:49They're starting five.
04:51It's intact.
04:52They all went 30 plus minutes last night.
04:54They don't have much of a bench.
04:56Kelser did the game on the radio last night and said, I'm a whore under the weather a little bit.
04:59I hope he's okay.
05:00But Kelser pointed out, and I thought it was very interesting.
05:02He said he thinks this is the fastest team that LeBron's ever played with.
05:07Interesting.
05:07So, I noticed this too.
05:11It's almost like they're playing with their playoff bench because they don't have a lot to go to.
05:18And I'm just wondering, with Embiid, he's no spring chicken.
05:21He's had injuries.
05:22LeBron is going to load manage throughout the course of the year.
05:26Jalen Brown is still in his prime.
05:28But is this a team that wears out, wears down?
05:32Because, like you mentioned, they're all playing 30 plus minutes a game.
05:35Yeah, my thought was, boy, I don't want to see this team in the playoffs.
05:39But they have to get there, and Embiid has to play in those postseason games.
05:43Yeah, they have to load manage.
05:45They know what they got.
05:46If they look at last night's game, I don't know if they can think they can be any better.
05:51But I also don't think the Pistons could beat that starting five in a seven-game series.
05:54I don't.
05:56Not as we're constructed and they're constructed.
05:58They're so well constructed as a starting five.
06:01They're just showing some of the highlights.
06:02I love the pushing and shoving.
06:04Oh, yeah, with Embiid.
06:06Yeah.
06:06And then the crowd serenading him.
06:10I think the Pistons could take them six or seven because I think the Sixers will have problems.
06:16But they'll probably add to their bench if they can cap-wise.
06:19Yeah.
06:21They need that sixth man.
06:22If they get that healthy, they're going to be – I just think it's a very well-constructed starting five.
06:28The way you're supposed to play basketball, you can, like you said, three levels and play defense.
06:33Yeah, but for them, it's just a matter of how long can they stay healthy.
06:39Yeah, again, all five starters in double figures, all five starters played north of 30 minutes.
06:43As a team, they ended up shooting 45%.
06:46I feel like it was closer to 50% for much of that game, just hitting tough shots even when
06:50the Pistons did lock in and play defense,
06:52which kind of came and went as the game went.
06:54Let's get to Gabe in Southfield.
06:56Gabe, you called in bright and early.
06:57You got thoughts on the Pistons.
07:00I do, and I had a question for you fellas, actually.
07:02Okay.
07:04So I watch the East, and I'm like, the East has gotten way better.
07:07Even the Wizards, you know what I mean, are a team to beat now.
07:10And you got Kawhi back in the East, LeBron back in the East, Tatum and Halliburton are healthy.
07:13And I look at our team, and exactly what you guys mentioned, that we don't have that secondary scorer.
07:19We don't have those bucket getters.
07:20So what is it about a GM that kind of doesn't see what we see?
07:24Because they didn't make the move last year.
07:26By all accounts, they're waiting for DeRion to get healthy, and they're not looking to make a move yet.
07:30So, like, you know, you've been watching the league a long time.
07:32Does the GM just fall in love with their guys?
07:34Is it stubbornness?
07:36Is it, you know, like, not wanting to make a big trade and have it blow back on them?
07:39But, like, what prevents the GM from seeing what we're all seeing and talking about?
07:44I think that's kind of always the question for all of our teams.
07:48Why does Brad Holmes not see that we need last year offensive linemen?
07:53Why does he see we don't need defensive backs?
07:57And, I mean, there's still time before the trade deadline.
07:59But to Gabe's point, like, last year at the trade deadline, we thought that they were going to go out
08:04and get that second shooter.
08:06Yeah, I don't know that I would accuse them of not seeing it.
08:10My critique would be they have a higher pain tolerance than you and I do.
08:14You know, I don't think they're oblivious.
08:15I just don't think they're willing to pay the price to get it.
08:17Like, the Lions were in on Joey Porter Jr., famously.
08:20As Dan Campbell told everyone at the podium, they didn't give up more.
08:24If they gave up the most, the deal goes their way.
08:27You know, and I think there were some irons in the fire this summer with Trajan Langdon.
08:32You know, we had to kind of connect the dots and read between the tea leaves and who were they
08:35clearing this cap space for?
08:36Or, you know, before they pay Assar and before they pay Durin, it didn't materialize.
08:41And maybe the teams were holding them over a barrel and asking for a King's ransom.
08:45But the takeaway is Trajan didn't pay the price to go and add that player in the offseason.
08:50And if they're going to do it in the postseason, they're going to need to find that guy along the
08:54way.
08:54Right.
08:55Yeah.
08:55And I wouldn't expect them to go out and do that now.
08:57Only eight games in.
08:58No.
08:59But, you know, as you get further down the road and you learn more about your team, that's when, excuse
09:06me, that's when you're wanting to make those additions.
09:12Text coming in.
09:13Take away.
09:13My God, LeBron looks old out there.
09:19I don't know.
09:20I kind of feel like that's what LeBron's been the last few years, you know?
09:23Yeah.
09:23He's got more of the old man game.
09:24He is.
09:25Yeah, he's 40-something.
09:26He's not jumping out of the gym anymore, but he flirted with a triple-double.
09:30He was very involved.
09:32Yeah.
09:32He didn't look washed.
09:33No.
09:34He looked old.
09:35Yeah.
09:37I feel like every time I turn on the Pistons, they're behind and always have to come back.
09:40That's not a recipe for success, signed Mike.
09:42I think some of that's just the NBA.
09:44Yeah.
09:44It's a streaky game, and there's going to be runs here and there.
09:49What I was saying earlier, you just can't expect to be able to have a run like that at the
09:54end of the game against a team like the Sixers.
09:56Ding, ding, ding.
09:57And the run that they did go on, Cade got the three blocked by Jalen Brown, who looked like he
10:03was sagging off and then jumped up and made a big block.
10:05But you can't be putting yourself in that spot against good teams.
10:08No.
10:08Guys, the Sixers did not know how to close.
10:10That's the hardest thing with a team like that.
10:12They all want to be the guy, and no one guy can really do it.
10:16They've got a regular season to sort that out.
10:18I'm sure.
10:20And they closed it out just fine last night.
10:23And I think it's a good thing to have too many closers as opposed to the Pistons who are like,
10:28Cade, save us.
10:29Yeah.
10:30I mean, if the Sixers had lost that game, you could say, yeah, they didn't know how to close it
10:34out, but they won.
10:36They could say it was clunky, and they're trying to figure it out, but they won.
10:38It's a good discussion on what's closing a game and what's like winning a close game.
10:44Like, if you're tied in the last two minutes and you finish the game on it, or let's say you're
10:50up by two in the last two minutes, you end the game on a 10-0 run.
10:53Well, it's a double-digit win.
10:55You won by 12, and so it's not a close game.
10:58Right.
10:59But you close the game by outscoring the team by 10 down the stretch.
11:03So is that not – do you get a demerit for not winning a close game, for not closing out
11:09a game?
11:10What do you do – and like we're talking about the Sixers today, they did close the game and finish,
11:16so do they not get credit for closing that?
11:19It's just a – how do you want to define or how do you want to look at what's closing
11:24a game, what's winning a close game?
11:25No, I would concede the point that they let the Pistons back into it if that's what the text is
11:29really trying to say.
11:31But what I would stress is they're not even 10 games into a season with a bunch of mouths to
11:36feed, and I think that's a good problem.
11:40I mean, imagine you're at the end of the game, you go, damn, Embiid can beat anybody one-on-one.
11:43But Jalen Brown's got 30.
11:45We could always run the offense through him.
11:47We've got arguably the greatest player of all time, LeBron James.
11:49He can read a basketball court better than anyone.
11:51Maybe we just give him the ball.
11:52I mean, it's such a great problem to have.
11:54Tyrese Maxey with the crossover dribbles and the quick bounce off the dribble, like maybe we just have him break
11:59down the defense.
12:00I have a feeling they'll figure it out if you've got all of these options offensively.
12:04Yeah, yeah, they got plenty of options.
12:07People are surprised at Tom's ball knowledge.
12:10This says, does Millican know ball?
12:12What up, no?
12:18Are you going to give us the Tiger starting lineup now?
12:22No.
12:23What up, no?
12:25I'd actually like Gov to do a Mason impression.
12:27Bobby Scales reset in early November.
12:30Yeah, what up, Doe, Detroit?
12:32And then this says, he needs, hopefully that's not in 2027.
12:36Let's lock that out.
12:39There's a topic.
12:40Things you want to lock out of baseball.
12:41There we go.
12:42Yeah.
12:44And one last one on the sheet you brought in.
12:46Costa was in a pineapple onesie holding Roomba yelling, no mercy, a central beat Eastern last night.
12:53You swept my leg last night.
12:55I don't care.
12:56Challenge that touchdown.
12:57Now, don't let him in there at all.
13:03All right.
13:04We'll get to the Thursday touchdown at 635.
13:06A question for Michigan and Michigan State fans.
13:09And as I promised, some rumors about what we're hearing.
13:11The Lions may do with the deadline.
13:13It's 97-1.
13:14It's quiet.
13:14one.
