00:24Subway surfing game, this looks pretty easy.
00:43And now, ladies and gentlemen, present the official voice of hip-hop, Super Rocky, Mr. Magic.
00:54WDLS 107.5, the class by itself.
00:57Good evening to your super listeners.
00:58How you doing tonight?
00:59All you fly guys and fly girls, welcome once again to the world famous Mr. Magic Rapper Jack.
01:04And of course, I am Sir Juice, your host for the next three hours as we kick off 30 minutes
01:08of non-stop music.
01:11Turn the boxes up, it's big fun in the big time.
01:31Make this here one jam that you do not start the fight.
01:37Cause that is one thing that we all must be done.
01:42And if you start some shit, your ass will not to run.
01:46If you will send...
01:49All the ladies, all the ladies in the house, say, ah, ah, ah.
01:57All the fellas, all the fellas in the house, say, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
02:05oh, oh, oh.
02:22Our first interview is with DJ Grandmaster Flash, one of the pioneers of the hip-hop movement.
02:29We meet each other in the South Bronx, one of the poorest and dangerous cities of the city,
02:34but also the place where in the second half of the 70's the first rappers and scratchers were on.
02:44The South Bronx, the South South Bronx, South Bronx, the South South Bronx, South Bronx, the South South Bronx.
02:51Now way back in the days when hip-hop began, with Coachella Rock, Cool, Hurricane, and then bam,
02:57these boys ran to the latest jam, but when they got shot up, they went home and said damn.
03:02Remember, Bronx River, rolling thick, with Cool, DJ, Red Alert, and Chuck Chill out on the mix.
03:07When Africa, Islam was rocking the jam, but on the other side of town was a kid named Flash, the
03:12kid named Flash, Flash.
03:13That's it.
03:15So where are we now?
03:17It was upstairs.
03:17This is where the Dixie Club used to be.
03:21The Dixie Club?
03:22Yeah, right here on Freeman Street.
03:24It was like after we grew out of the black door, my manager was searching for a club in the
03:30general area, and this was it.
03:33It held like about 800 people.
03:36Is it still a club?
03:37No.
03:39It's now Examika Playhouse.
03:43In the early days, a DJ used to play a record from start to finish, which I felt that kind
03:52of boring to look at or even to listen to.
03:54So what I would do is pick the most climatic part or the strongest part, the funkiest part of the
04:00record, and just continuously repeat that part over and over again in sync.
04:04This is like way before a record swing.
04:07I mean, I even thought about being made, you know, there was no such thing as a recording artist, rapper,
04:13on a record, so to speak, you know.
04:15What do you have on now?
04:16Well, I have one, um, this was a real popular record, you know, in its time and at this point
04:23here, it still is.
04:25It's called Bob James 2, Take Me to the Mardi Gras.
04:28Well, I'll just try to, like, take it apart and put it together again.
04:33Oh, yeah.
05:05When I started getting, as they say today, get busy on the turntables, everybody would just stop dancing and just
05:12look like as if I was holding class.
05:15When my main objective was to get them out there, I mean, it was like it took me hours to
05:20figure out the best part of the record.
05:22I master it, I make a program out of, like, 30 or 40 records, and I'm ready to go out
05:28there and kill them with the best part of all these 30 or 40 records, and everybody's just standing around.
05:45I needed something to get the people off what I was doing and into a party mode.
05:51At that time there, playing in the parks with the style of music that we were playing, you had to
05:57keep the audience occupied, because if you didn't, you know, somebody might just get violent.
06:01I mean, these things happen, you know.
06:04And, um, from there, that's when, um, emceeing, it's now, the standard is now called rapping.
06:10It was called emceeing.
06:12And, um, the rapping and the deejaying, you know, intertwined together, it worked pretty good.
06:18Yeah.
06:19Grandmaster. Cut, faster. Grandmaster. Cut, faster. Grandmaster.
06:32I'm so lucky.
06:34I love you.
06:37I love you.
06:38The air is super cool.
06:49So here's a beat that's coming your way, and there's no time for a delay.
06:58Here we are for the first time, guaranteed to make any party line, and if you don't want
07:06to rock, then you might as well leave.
07:09What did you learn to rap and sing?
07:12From your English teacher and your music teacher?
07:15No, rap.
07:17You learn rap from the streets.
07:19Yeah, you grow up around rap.
07:26This is the Bronx, this is the hotbed of rap, this is where it all started, this is where
07:31it's still growing and building.
07:33Like in the New York City schools, a lot of the music programs were cut out because of
07:37budgetary reasons and stuff like that.
07:39So in the old days where kids could take music lessons and pay for private lessons and stuff
07:43like that, in this section of the city, not too many families can afford music lessons and
07:49things like that.
07:50And now that the schools don't have any music programs, particularly left especially in the
07:53elementary schools and the junior high schools, kids have no place to take music anymore.
07:57So in the Bronx what happened was that they figured out a new form of music that didn't
08:02take any music lessons and that is using poetry in a rhythm, which has a lot of roots in Africa
08:09and stuff like that in the southern United States.
08:11But the kids in the Bronx really invented this form because there's no outlet in programming,
08:17drum computers and things like that that you need behind it.
08:19It doesn't take a heck of a lot of music lessons.
08:22Well, I called my girl up on the phone to see if she was busy or all alone, just waiting
08:28for a signal or a green light to know if I can see her on that same night.
08:32And she said, yo, Elle, it's up to you.
08:35Then I said, OK, I'll be there in a few.
08:37When I got inside, she gave me a squeeze, said, let's make love.
08:41She said, oh, Elle, please.
08:43I knew that I was doing it well, because every two minutes she screamed, oh, Elle.
08:48I felt so good, I was doing it well, it was like a mobile station, just a poppin' gas.
08:53She said, yo, Elle, you make love better than Michael Jackson and his white glove.
08:58Just knew that I was doing it well.
09:02Ahhhh.
09:03This is Harlem in New York, eigenaardig genoeg.
09:58You know, you know Dougie fresh. Yes, I know. Yeah, do you know his records?
10:03Yeah, you know, I'm not about that kind of so that's some kids
10:09You're not into rap music
10:22This is called the clicks right now like this
10:27Right and I can do it in a whole lot of different ways. I can make it sound fast
10:31I can make it sound slow. I can make it sound any way. I wanted to like for instance
10:35I could go like this
10:55Yeah, that's it
10:58I could do it like that
10:59I can do I can play anything that I want to play
11:02I can play anything you can think of
11:04If it's a record if it's a beat
11:06If there's anything that that you know that that's within sense of playing
11:10I could play it, you know, and it's just a gift and I just do what I feel with it
11:16Right now rap music is tops
11:19Rap music is number one over here
11:21Rap music is ruling
11:23We cooling and rap music is ruling
11:25And we stand here and we represent rap music because
11:29It's kind of different
11:31It's like the way rock and roll was back in the days
11:34The way they wouldn't accept rock and roll to the fullest
11:37But now they're accepting it and we going through the same thing that they went through
11:40And it's the younger people speaking up
11:43It's the it's all the younger people speaking up
11:45We we represent the way that the younger people feel
11:48And so we saying it and a lot of younger people have these older idols to look up to
11:53And these idols look soft
11:55You know what I'm saying?
11:57They I mean it's nothing the matter with having long hair
12:00But for you to wear eyeliner and blush and lipstick and they let your fingernails grow so long
12:06And all of this and and all of that is cool if you still represent things like a man
12:11But a lot of younger brothers and sisters you know they look at they look at these young rap stars
12:16And they can see that they represent something that's real
12:19We don't wear no glittering stuff
12:21Only thing we wear that glitter on us is our gold
12:23And we wear gold because it's natural
12:25There's nothing fake about it
12:27The main message to our rap music is have something to believe in and be yourself
12:32And let people hear that we're not as stupid and as ignorant as they think we are
12:36You know what I'm saying?
12:45Now we came here tonight to get started
12:50To go act ill or get retarded
13:05I'm Shantae and the rhymes of death
13:08Just rap so fresh till I get out of breath
13:11Now this is something that we do have to do
13:14And this is a team that I must introduce
13:17Rock-a-rock-a-rock
13:19The boogie boogie damn rocks
13:21Boogie damn rocks
13:22Now, now throw your hands in the air
13:25And wave it like you just don't care
13:28And if you hear from the broads that you know you damn
13:31Let me hear you say, oh yeah
13:34Oh yeah
13:35Oh yeah
13:37Oh yeah
13:38Oh yeah
13:39Oh yeah
13:40That subject's cute and it's sort of fine
13:42But another subject just came in my mind
13:45It's sort of crazy, it's sort of whack
13:48I'm talking about five dollar cracks
13:51Run around town just sticking up each other
13:53Ready to rob each other's mother
13:56Getting little capsules don't wanna choke
13:59And all you do is sit down and smoke
14:02Something that, blijkbaar, elke rapper bezighoudt
14:05Is the problem of the crack
14:06The new drug in the United States
14:08Crack is a cocaine-derivaat
14:10Actually, a smokeable cocaine
14:11We call it the street-kid drug
14:14Because it's much cheaper than cocaine
14:16You already have crack for 10 to 20 dollars
14:19And you're almost completely enslaved
14:21That's why it's here
14:23Crack is whack
14:24Crack is not okay
14:25Crack is wrong
14:26You don't have to do it
14:27Crack killed Applejack
14:29He jumped good and he couldn't jump back
14:31He was just too blind to see that
14:33Death lives in the rock house
14:35Crack
14:41Right now we're in the LES
14:43Known as the Lower East Side, Manhattan
14:46They're in the Baruch Projects right now
14:49It's also one of the hottest crack neighborhoods
14:54Like a block or two away over there
14:56Avenue D
14:57It's pretty wild, you know, it's pretty rough
14:59It's like a major crack clean-up area
15:02Guns also?
15:03Of course, this is the ghetto
15:05The kids, they travel in packs
15:07And like lots of kids
15:09Because it's safe to be in numbers of kids
15:14Can you say there's a relation between the street gangs, the violence and the music?
15:19Or alcohol?
15:20Absolutely not
15:22The violence, we just have a major debate about that
15:25The music does not breed violence
15:28As a matter of fact, you know, it's the only way that these kids have it getting out of the
15:32neighborhood is by the music
15:34They have two ways of getting out of the neighborhood
15:36Either one is by, you know, dealing crack
15:40Or the other is by showing them the way out by either music or rappers or, you know, dancers
15:47They used to be, they used to have the break dancing
15:49They always know the way to get the kids out
15:51And I feel these kids haven't been treated properly
15:54I don't think they get the proper housing, the proper education, the proper chance in life
15:59And we go out and we work with these kids, you know, and they're great
16:08This is the CBS crew, what's the CBS crew?
16:11It's not a television station, I suppose
16:12Can't be stopped
16:13Can't be stopped
16:14We play music
16:15Can't be stopped
16:16Can't be stopped
16:17We play music, right?
16:19We make money
16:20Yeah, we make money
16:21By doing what?
16:23You make money by doing what?
16:24By playing music for Vito, all his parties
16:27More jobs
16:27Yeah
16:29You go to school
16:31You know
16:31Word
16:32He told me you're a street gang
16:35What does it mean?
16:35In Europe you don't know what a street gang is
16:37No
16:37Everyone's a problem
16:38We're all together, right?
16:40And then when we have problems we're like a family
16:42When we have problems we get together
16:44We all handle it together
16:44Yeah, we all
16:46As one
16:46We take it all together, yeah
16:47Like they say we fight together
16:49One for all for one
16:50Can you tell us something about the neighborhood?
16:52What's going on here?
16:53Amongst younger people
16:55Crack
16:55Yeah, crack
16:56It's real bad
16:57It's real bad, right?
16:58We're against crack, right?
17:00We try to fight
17:00Like if they sell drugs around here
17:02We'll tell them get out of here
17:03Yeah, that's what we do
17:04Like they can sell drugs around over there
17:05But they can't sell drugs around here
17:07If they sell drugs around here
17:09That's what CBS is for
17:10That's what CBS is for
17:12We chase them out of here
17:13Life is fresh, crack is whack
17:14Yeah
17:15What do you think your future looks like?
17:18My future?
17:19My future is music
17:21I like music
17:21And I'm not going to stop
17:22I'm going to keep on
17:24With music
17:25Because I like music
17:28You seem to be quite hopeful
17:29What do you think the future of your friends will be?
17:32In this neighborhood?
17:33In this neighborhood?
17:34Well, a lot of them will go to jail
17:36A lot of most of them will go to jail
17:39And maybe some of them will become good people
17:42Because some of my friends are good people
17:44When they go to school
17:45And everything
17:47Some of them don't
17:48But that's how it is
17:49Some of your friends are good
17:50Some of your friends are bad
17:51But you are
17:52The hip-hop gangsta
17:54You switch around
17:55My ass to ring
17:55And like the officer
17:57I still get caught up there
17:59I use your mind
18:00Or a gun
18:01Intellectual
18:02Or a bullet
18:02In my mouth
18:03Captioners will execute
18:04It's looking for us
18:05Come in to see a rhyme
18:06Or all the suckers
18:07We don't rock it
18:08Cause I'll push this shit
18:09To me
18:09What's the lead for?
18:10Big garbage
18:11Who's got a ruse
18:11By my side
18:12Pick a truth to tell
18:13You can't XBI
18:14Or my brother's shimmy
18:16Or just come to a party
18:18Wax your grace
18:18Oh
18:19I'm afraid
18:20For a rough man
18:20We're the warriors
18:21Well
18:21I'm afraid
18:22For a rough man
18:23We're the warriors
18:24Well
18:24We're the warriors
18:27We're the fucked wealth
18:29And we keep them together
18:30Throw some money
18:36So all you fight
18:38And listen to what we said
18:39We have strong literature
18:40And all is for your head
18:41We on the down the rapping range
18:43In any territory
18:44And don't try competing
18:45In this epic category
18:46So when we rock upon the mice
18:48Just the two of us
18:49We don't believe in all the rappers
18:50In God we trust
18:51I'm not Maurice Thane
18:52And I'm not Jerome
18:54And Sly Tide
18:54And Wayne's people walk in Tyrone
18:56And when I rock
18:57I know I'm number one
18:58And when I rock
18:59I kinda think I'm just like Ron
19:06And, and I'm done
19:07This whole boy
19:08My jump is on my feet
19:09I'll be walking
19:10I'll be pimpin'
19:11All down the street
19:11And when you see
19:12My jump is mean
19:13I play sport
19:14At Jordans
19:15And feedin' basketball
19:16At Jordans
19:19This is the office
19:21Of Russell Simmons
19:22Of Def Jam Label
19:24Yes
19:24Are you gonna see him?
19:26Yeah
19:26Hopefully
19:27We wanna meet him
19:27What are the other rap songs
19:29You got?
19:30What are they about?
19:31All from Chicago
19:32Yeah it's about things
19:33We see happening in Chicago
19:34What happens in Chicago?
19:37You know like
19:37Are there street gangs
19:38For example?
19:39Oh yeah
19:39Definitely street gangs
19:40I mean that's all over
19:41You know for real
19:42Word
19:42Do you have a rap on that?
19:44Definitely
19:45Can you do that for him?
19:48Yeah
19:49Yeah
19:49Tomorrow is near
19:49But pretty much you make the same
19:51There's a talk about the phrase
19:52They call a street gang
19:53A street definition
19:55But the boys who cause trouble
19:56Yet you catch one along
19:57They're scared to bust a bubble
19:58Most homeboys we know
20:00I'm dropping in the game
20:01It's best to show some love
20:02Or you receive pain
20:03You got to go to game meet
20:04There's no time for hesitation
20:06Either paper or text your fees
20:07Or yes you get a violation
20:08With gang bangers fighters
20:09You need five or six dudes
20:10Don't fight clean found
20:12They don't fight by the rules
20:13You can't tell a gang nothing
20:14That's because they know
20:15We all half didn't finish school
20:16Or yet they gang bang it tall
20:18They try to grow up fast
20:19They try to be the big brother
20:20They steal it from their mother
20:21Taking blood from each other
20:22Let's stop these gangs
20:24Bring a new situation
20:25Stay out of trouble
20:26And try to get your education
20:27The Windy City wouldn't be a bad place to live
20:30If they love one another
20:31And everybody give
20:32It would please us all
20:33If gangs were creative
20:34Then the law wouldn't bother them
20:36The people wouldn't hate them
20:37My best friends would never be the same
20:39Mistaken and shocked by a rebel street gang
20:41Game out every day
20:43No enemies are all
20:44All he did is with the chain
20:45He played basketball
20:46I got a friend named
20:47Dell
20:47He's cool as hell
20:48Got a face like a
20:49Booger
20:49I know who's like a
20:50Snell
20:51My friend named
20:51Dell
20:52He's locked himself
20:53Cause he's always getting up
20:54Now his name is
20:55Gale
20:55In the late 60s
20:56The gangs came out
20:57People running in the crib
20:59They was getting to come out
21:00Yeah
21:00Three rival gangs
21:01Had control of the street
21:02You either did what you told
21:03Or you was dead meat
21:05That's great
21:06Do you think you're gonna get a record deal
21:08With that jam?
21:10Hopefully
21:10I mean that's been my dream
21:11We feel it
21:11We had that inspiration in doing it
21:13There's something going on
21:13Yeah
21:14We left Chicago all the way
21:16Okay
21:16Lots of success
21:17I'm gonna see Russell myself
21:18Yeah
21:19We left Chicago all the way to come here
21:20Okay
21:21Bye
21:31I have an appointment with Russell Sillings
21:34Can you call him?
21:35Okay, sure
21:36I'm doing that
21:40Okay
21:45Our first artist was Curtis Blow
21:46We currently represent like 40
21:48Maybe 40 artists
21:50Including Curtis Blow
21:51Houdini
21:52LL Cool J
21:53The Beastie Boys
21:54Run DMC of course
21:56Davey D
21:57Spider D
21:57Sparky D
21:58Along with
21:59They've all had some success
22:02Some more than others
22:04I think people
22:05As they hear it more
22:07They understand it more
22:08And appreciate it more
22:10Run DMC has sold over a million records
22:13It sold
22:14The first album sold 900,000
22:16The second one sold
22:17A little over 900,000
22:20This new one is sold
22:22Over two and a quarter million
22:24I couldn't wait to get it
22:26Everybody was telling me
22:27To get a Mercedes Benz
22:28Or get this or get that
22:30But I like the Cadillac
22:31It's pretty
22:31Does it have special gadgets inside?
22:34Well it's all electronic
22:35Let's go inside and see
22:36Show us something
22:40Black tinted windows
22:42Usually the police stop me
22:44And say
22:44Hey what you doing
22:44Tinted windows don't mean nothing
22:46They know who's inside
22:48Come on over
22:53Straight up hip hop
22:54From New York City
23:00One, two, three, hit
23:06To the beach y'all
23:08You don't stop
23:08Come on, come on, come on
23:10We're gonna hit the top
23:11Now I'm DMC
23:12And a place to be
23:13And I go by the name of DMC
23:15In a car that'll drive
23:16I gotta be a caddy
23:18I'm wearing my glasses
23:19So I can see
23:22One, two, three, hit
23:26Well right now
23:27Me, Run and Jay
23:28We're producing this rapper
23:29His name is Rapper Ron Ski
23:31And he's a Jamaican reggae rapper
23:34And we're doing him a single right now
23:35And he's very incredible
23:51Oh my god, let's work, let's go
23:57You guys can't go
23:58You want me to tell them
24:00They can take no calls
24:01We're gonna do this
24:01You have to
24:02Hello
24:03I have, who's this
24:05I have problems, Leo
24:06I'm trying to make a mix
24:07Everybody's calling me
24:09It's really fucked up
24:14My money
24:14Hey, I already
24:15Oh my god
24:15I bet Russell got a hand
24:17When you're trying
24:18We want to spend
24:19For our own cars
24:21And life
24:21Like I spend
24:21For my own burgers
24:23We'll pay for our rooms
24:24We'll pay for everything
24:25It's good for my career
24:27Thank you
24:27Later
24:27Put me alone
24:29Tell me I gotta pay
24:30For my own rooms
24:31In a hotel
24:32Who gives a fuck
24:33Who
24:33Are we all getting
24:34The same shit?
24:35Jay
24:35We all spend the same money
24:37So we get the same shit
24:38We all get a nice room
24:39And a nice car
24:39Let's go
24:40I'm so nervous
24:41Fucking phone
24:43I'll leave it off
24:44Forever
24:44I'll leave it off
24:45Forever
24:45Until this time
24:46Until this time
24:46But I want to catch it
24:47Like you didn't catch
24:48I want to catch this shit
24:49It only come once in a year
24:51Anyway
24:51Let's go
24:52Ready?
24:53Real nervous, man
24:54Go
24:55Ready?
24:55C-O-R-O
24:56Jay
25:13My Adidas
25:14Walked through concert doors
25:16And roamed all over Coliseum floors
25:19I stepped on stage
25:20At Live Aid
25:21All the people gave
25:23And the poor got paid
25:24And out of speakers
25:26I did speak
25:27I wore my sneakers
25:28But I'm not a sneak
25:30My Adidas touched the sand
25:31Of a foreign land
25:32With Mike in hand
25:34A code to command
25:35My Adidas indeed
25:36Close as can be
25:38We make a mean team
25:39My Adidas and me
25:40We get around together
25:42We're down forever
25:43And we won't be had
25:45When worn in bad weather
25:46My Adidas
25:49And we didn't make that record
25:50To get money from Adidas
25:51Or nothing
25:52We just made it
25:53Because it was like I said
25:54This is what all the youth wear
25:55And it was like our tribute
25:57To our sneakers
25:58Like when we first started
25:59We didn't put on
26:01No fancy costumes
26:02Because Run DMC
26:03Is no gimmicks
26:04Or nothing
26:04We straight up
26:05And we straight forward
26:05And this is what I'm wearing now
26:07And what we wear on stage
26:08Is just what all the youth wear
26:11That's what you know
26:11That's what all our fans wear
26:13So dressing this way
26:15Let's them know
26:15Oh he's just like me
26:16That's why we got a rhyme
26:17That goes
26:17The things I do
26:18Makes me a star
26:20And you can be too
26:21If you know who you are
26:22Just put your mind to it
26:23You go real far
26:24Like the pedal to the metal
26:25When you're driving a car
26:28I want to be able to sell
26:30Sell a group for what they are
26:32Without gimmicking you all the time
26:33And we haven't been
26:34You know in England
26:35Especially and in Europe
26:36You guys are very gimmick
26:37Aren't you when it comes
26:38To this music
26:39Holiday rap
26:42And what else
26:44You know it's all gimmick
26:45It's jokes
26:46And there's no artists
26:47Certainly we you know
26:49Our company is based
26:50On developing images
26:51And artists you know
26:52And the guys we sign
26:54Make their own songs
26:55And have their own ideas
26:57And have more commercial talent
26:58Than most any pop stars
27:00And these guys come in
27:02And know what they're making
27:02You know
27:06I don't know that
27:06Diana Ross producer
27:07Wrote any of her songs
27:08Or how many of them
27:10Did she
27:10I know that LL Cool J
27:12Is the driving force
27:13In the studio
27:13When he records
27:14That Houdini is the
27:16Houdini can change producers
27:17Like he changes gloves
27:18Or socks
27:19And keep making records
27:21When he doesn't need producers
27:24Spiders, Sparky
27:24The rest
27:25All those artists
27:26That we sign
27:28Are commercial talents
27:30On their own
27:31On their own
28:00Hello
28:00Yes he is
28:01Can I see him
28:01You may
28:02Can I come in
28:03Sure you may
28:04Come in
28:18He'll be right there
28:20Hello
28:21Yo what's up
28:22What's up
28:22I'm myself
28:24Alright
28:25What's up man
28:26What's up
28:30You are one of the few
28:32Who make love raps
28:34And rather tender love raps
28:36Why don't the others
28:37Do that
28:37You think
28:38Well you know
28:40It's just like
28:41An inside feeling
28:42Right easy
28:42Maybe they don't want
28:43To make that type of music
28:44They rather make hard records
28:45Or they just rather
28:46Make hard records
28:47Or records that
28:48Ain't on that tip
28:49Me
28:50I like doing that
28:51Because I like ladies
28:52You know
28:52I like them
28:53So I like to express myself
28:54And let them know
28:55That I like them
28:56And love them
28:57And want them
28:59You know what I'm saying
29:01That's all it is
29:02Watch your back
29:02Watch your back
29:03Because you might get hit
29:05Yeah
29:05Can you give us
29:06Some definitions
29:08Of the LL's
29:10In your name
29:10LL stands for
29:11Ladies love
29:12Legend and leather
29:12Long and lean
29:13Love of ladies
29:14Last of the red hot lovers
29:15Looking for a little
29:16Looking learning
29:17The one you're liking
29:17It's a lot of L's
29:19You know what I'm saying
29:19Ladies love
29:20Legend and leather
29:21Long and lean
29:22And I don't wear pleather
29:23Last of the red hot loving MC's
29:25Looking for a little
29:26That's my theory
29:27It goes quick like lightning
29:28Too exciting
29:29Lover of ladies
29:30Don't allow biting
29:31Level headed leader
29:31Toy boy feeder
29:32Good love life
29:33And a rhyme by the beater
29:34Looking learning
29:35The one you're liking
29:36Listen and you will love
29:37What I'm writing
29:38Ladies love
29:39Long heart and lean
29:40And now you know
29:41What LL means
29:42You know what I'm saying
29:43Yeah we know it
29:46Can you say that rap
29:47Is a
29:48A boys thing
29:50Even a macho thing
29:52Because there aren't
29:52Much girl rappers
29:53What's your opinion on that
29:55Well we got girl rappers
29:56It's just that
29:56You know
29:57Not many
29:57Not many
29:58Most of them are boys
29:59You know
29:59It's inevitable
30:00Just like anything else
30:01You know
30:01It takes time
30:02For you to get these things
30:03You know
30:04Female rappers
30:05Will be
30:06You know
30:06They're out there
30:07Eventually
30:07They'll be a big
30:08Successful group
30:09You know
30:09It's only
30:10It's inevitable
30:10This takes time
30:12You know
30:12I'm saying
30:12The male rappers
30:13Haven't even got to
30:14Where they're supposed
30:15To be yet
30:15You know
30:16I'm saying
30:16We want to be way up there
30:17Like
30:17Just like that
30:18That jet going through
30:19The sky over there
30:20You know
30:20I'm saying
30:20We want to be way up there
30:22Chilling
30:22Up high
30:23And you know
30:23Then the girls
30:24Will come through
30:25You know
30:25I'm not a macho
30:27What do you call it
30:27Egotistical pig
30:28Or whatever it is
30:29A lot of the rap lyrics
30:31Not only yours
30:31But also from
30:32Most of the rap groups
30:33Are very macho type
30:35I mean
30:35They sing about themselves
30:36They boast about themselves
30:37Yeah but I speak about girls
30:38Telling them
30:39My daydream love scenes
30:39When you pass by
30:40I wonder what the future
30:41Is for you and I
30:42So I'm not
30:43You know
30:43Being like that
30:44You know
30:45It's just
30:45That's just part of life
30:46You know
30:47I'm saying
30:47If you don't express
30:48To somebody
30:48That you're proud of yourself
30:49And how you
30:50How you coming off
30:51You know what I'm saying
30:52Then how they gonna know
30:53You know what I'm saying
30:54How they gonna know
30:54What to believe
30:55You know
30:56What would you say
30:56If they got on the record
30:58And said
30:58Yo I'm a sucker
30:59I'm a punk
30:59And I can't even fight
31:00And I don't make no money
31:01You know
31:01How that sounds
31:02What are you gonna rap about
31:04You know what I'm saying
31:05What the youngsters
31:06Are rapping about now
31:07Is
31:10Nursery rhymes
31:12So we like to deal
31:13With the real
31:14You know what I mean
31:16Rhyming is fine
31:17But not nursery rhymes
31:19That's why you say
31:20Hip-hop is one big ego trip
31:22Well
31:23Yes
31:24It is
31:25It is an ego trip
31:26Because
31:27The guy's only been talking
31:28About yourself
31:29How much of a lover
31:30How do women love him to death
31:31You know what I mean
31:32How they can
31:32How they can throw down
31:33How good they can dance
31:34How bad they are
31:36Nobody better not mess with me
31:37And all of that kind of foolishness
31:38That's only encouraging violence
31:41You know
31:41And madness
31:44As opposed to encouraging sanity
31:46And progress
31:48And I'm saying
31:50That
31:51They're
31:52Telling people
31:53Talking about how tough they are
31:55And everything is not solving the problem
31:57You understand
31:58If they were to address the issues
32:00The issues being poverty
32:02The issues being powerlessness
32:05The issues being
32:07Not having political power
32:08The issues being
32:10Economically deprived
32:11You see what I'm saying
32:12All of these issues
32:13They should be addressing this
32:15With their energy
32:16I don't rap about problems
32:18You know
32:18I don't rap about things
32:19That like
32:20Like the ghetto
32:21Or nothing
32:22Because
32:22When kids come to my concert
32:23When they come to my concert
32:25I want them to
32:26I want life's pressure
32:27To be taken off their backs
32:28You know what I'm saying
32:29And not put on their backs
32:31You know
32:31That's why they come to my show
32:32They be having fun
32:33Hard as hell
32:34That's what I want them to do
32:35Not rap about the ghetto in life
32:36Because they don't want to hear that
32:38You know what I'm saying
32:39So it's not necessary
32:40For a rap to have messages
32:42Like
32:43Grandmaster Flash
32:43No
32:44That's unnecessary
32:45Why would a kid
32:46Want to pay a ticket
32:47To come and hear
32:47How bad life is
32:48This is your son
32:50This is one of my sons
32:51Yeah
32:52What do you think about all that
32:53Do you like hip hop music
32:54You told us
32:55Yeah
32:55What do you think about
32:56Your dad just said
32:57Well I think
32:58They speaking much of the truth
33:01And
33:03You just can't beat
33:04You know
33:04That kind of stuff
33:05That he's talking
33:07I do admit
33:08What I be listening to
33:09Is garbage
33:11But I still love it
33:13I still like it
33:14But
33:14It makes me dance
33:15And you know
33:16It gets me up
33:17But
33:18You know
33:19His music
33:22Brings education
33:23On personally
33:24Blessed are you all
33:26Who will join with us now
33:27In this struggle of life and death
33:28So that freedom and peace
33:30Will be more than a word
33:31To the offspring that we have left
33:33Mmm
33:33Blessed are those who struggle
33:36Oppression is worse than the grave
33:38Better to die for
33:39Noble cause
33:40Than to live and die a slave
33:42Ooh
33:42Blessed are those who struggle
33:45Oppression is worse than the grave
33:47Better to die for
33:48Noble cause
33:49Than to live and die a slave
33:52Actually
33:54If they didn't have any words
33:56What so ever
33:56And they put on the music
33:58You know
33:59Put the drum machine on
34:00Put the bass machine on
34:02They wouldn't need
34:04To put no music in it
34:05They wouldn't need no words
34:06You understand
34:07And they still
34:07You know
34:08Do do do do
34:09Do do do
34:11Do do do
34:11Do do do
34:13Do do do
34:13Do do do
34:14Do do do
34:16Do do do
34:16Do do do
34:16Do do do
34:16Do do do
34:17They can do that man
34:18They can make a move
34:18Make a move
34:19Because
34:19Number one
34:20Our people have rhythm
34:22That's natural
34:22You understand
34:23The drum is a part of us
34:25So consequently
34:26When we hear drums
34:27And we hear bass
34:28If it's played
34:29You understand
34:30We pat our feet
34:31To the beat
34:34We ain't got to rhyme
34:35All the time
34:57Just say what you wanna say
35:16Just say what you wanna say
35:38Walk around the city
35:39It's not always pretty
35:40What people do
35:41To make ends meet
35:43It's a love emotion
35:44An old fashioned notion
35:45It's so hard to find
35:46In the street
35:47You better look at it
35:48No
35:48You might lose it
35:50Though it's not
35:50A very friendly choice
35:51It's so hard to get along
35:53And the world's so wrong
35:54But don't forget
35:55You still have a voice
35:56I said say what you wanna say
35:59Tell them to even
36:00Say what you wanna say
36:01He's got this new heart
36:02He's got this new heart
36:02He's got this new heart
36:04He's got this new heart
36:05He's got this new heart
36:05He's got this new heart
36:07Don't be upset
36:08Don't let Jim on fret
36:09I'll do it to you, baby
36:11That's a short shot bet
36:12Suckin' niggas in the house
36:13Standin' in the back
36:14You came in the butt
36:15I came in the back
36:16I think what I wanna say
36:19Ain't a cocky in the house
36:20That can take it away
36:21So
36:21Everybody ditch me
36:22Believe you miss me
36:23Girl in the butt
36:24I know you wanna kiss
36:26Do it
36:28Do it
36:57Who's up, Frank
36:59Started wondering me like you, now I'm hoin'
37:00A beat last night, dark you was lowin'
37:03A rich boy sees an end, we all knowin'
37:05The big fat suites that you are goin' do it
37:15Our sound is raw, very raw.
37:18It's like we say things that other MCs wish they could say
37:23and wanna say, scared to say,
37:25because the record companies won't let them say it.
37:27So, since I have my own record company, I can say anything I want.
37:32If, you know, our buddies do crap, we gonna say it.
37:36If Run-DMC buddies do crap, they're not gonna say it
37:39because the record companies won't let them say it.
37:41First of all, you can't be affiliated with drugs.
37:45But, you know, if it's happening, we gonna say it.
37:49I don't wanna be a schoolteacher saying,
37:52don't do drugs, don't, you know, have sex, don't steal, you know.
37:58Can you give us some examples of typical words you use in the rapping?
38:03Like, ill, diss, suck-ass nigga, I shoot you dead,
38:10pistol, coke, laces, crack, things of that sort.
38:15That's how they talk.

39:04Rock and roll came out.
39:06See, people don't remember,
39:07Rock and roll came out the same way rap came out.
39:10People said, now it'll never last.
39:13Parents told their children not to listen to it.
39:16It's bad, it's the Devil's music
39:19and what it developed into is something bad.
39:23You know, it's like I see these guys doing what the guys
39:27that I used to, you know, look on TV, look at the old movies.
39:30I used to like that.
39:32But then I look at the new rock and rollers.
39:35It's a shame what they did to it.
39:37And I hope rap just don't go that same route
39:40where they take the rawness away, just didn't make it too pretty.
39:46I don't think rock and roll is meant to be pretty.
39:49Rock and roll is meant to be bad.
39:51It's like rap.
40:29Rock and roll is meant to be pretty.
40:29Rock and roll is meant to go that way.
40:45Ah!
40:47Ah!
40:48Ah!
