00:00Your station for music at its best, WSLT-FM, Ocean City, Summers Point.
00:07Now this update from ABC News. Good morning, I'm Bob Windsor.
00:11Israeli jets have bombed Palestinian targets in and around Beirut for the fourth day in a row,
00:16and Israeli troops are tightening the siege on the western zone.
00:19ABC's Bill Siemens has this report from Tel Aviv.
00:22The Israeli military spokesman says Israeli planes bombed PLO positions in the Sabah refugee camp
00:28and near the football stadium in West Beirut.
00:31The Israelis say PLO mortar and missile positions and ammunition stores were attacked.
00:37With the continuing airstrikes, it appears that the Israelis are keeping up the military pressure
00:41to speed up the PLO's withdrawal from Lebanon.
00:45Three Israeli soldiers were reported slightly wounded in sporadic exchanges of light arms fire with the PLO.
00:52Bill Siemens, ABC News, Tel Aviv.
00:54Lebanese officials say Israeli troops have cut off all water supplies to West Beirut
00:59for the second time since the invasion 50 days ago.
01:01The Israeli cabinet reportedly will talk about possible Soviet involvement with Syrian forces in Lebanon's Bacav Valley.
01:08Israeli jets destroyed some Soviet-built surface-to-air missiles in the valley yesterday,
01:12and it's believed Soviet or Warsaw Pact advisors may have been escorting those missile units.
01:17There is no confirmation from Syria which has threatened surprise attacks against Israeli positions in Lebanon
01:23if its forces are attacked.
01:25I'll have more after this.
01:26Didn't know your own brother-in-law was an inventor, huh?
01:28Gee, this machine takes up your whole basement.
01:31It's the Admaster 2000.
01:33It can do anything your ad agency can do.
01:34This machine will buy me lunch.
01:36No, but it will make all your media-buying decisions.
01:39What, where, how much?
01:40How does the machine work?
01:41Well, let's take you.
01:42You're selling shoes.
01:43Shirts.
01:43Shirts, right.
01:43Say we take the shirt you got on.
01:45I'm really happy with my ad agency.
01:46We toss it into the machine, add a dash of strategy and position, a pinch of research,
01:50a generous portion of your money.
01:51Whoa.
01:52Well, out comes the media buy.
01:55It says TV and newspaper, buy now.
01:57That's media buying, neat, huh?
01:58How come it doesn't say radio?
01:59Ray what?
02:00See, my agency says that in today's economy, radio is a great way to stretch the budget.
02:04Well, we just can't.
02:05And you can still afford to buy enough frequency in radio,
02:07and it targets people with the money to spend, and it sells.
02:10Well, radio is good.
02:11But the ad machine didn't know that.
02:13Needs a few adjustments.
02:14Can I get my shirt back now?
02:15Oh, sure.
02:16Oh, I'm sorry.
02:17I think you just lost it.
02:18Radio.
02:19Red hot because it works.

02:24They brought you this message.
02:28U.S. Envoy Philip Habib is in Cairo this morning,
02:31planning to travel to Israel as part of his effort to find a solution to the Lebanon crisis.
02:35Habib has been looking for Arab countries willing to take in Palestinian guerrillas who leave Lebanon.
02:40Questions are being raised about Habib's work for the Bechtel Corporation,
02:44which was headed by George Shultz before he took over as Secretary of State.
02:48The Washington Post says Shultz hired Habib as a Mideast consultant for Bechtel last year.
02:54Bechtel has major interests in the Arab world.
02:56Some members of Congress say it would be a serious matter if Habib is still on the company's payroll.
03:01Heavy rains that cause flooding and landslides in southern Japan are taking a heavy toll of life and property.
03:07ABC's Ray Falk has this report.
03:09The damage after five days of rain on the southern island of Kyushu is horrendous.
03:14500 landslides, 62 bridges washed away, 450 houses destroyed, and 40,000 homes flooded.
03:246,000 policemen, soldiers, and civilian volunteers have started to dig out a rising number of dead.
03:31Total casualties of injured, missing, and dead are over 500.
03:35100. Worst hit was the city of Nagasaki, which was the second city to be hit by an atomic bomb
03:42in 1945.
03:44Nagasaki is known as the cradle of Japanese Christianity.
03:48Ray Falk, ABC News, Tokyo.
03:51U.S. officials say they welcome new efforts by the European Common Market to renew talks on steel exports.
03:57The Reagan administration has threatened to impose heavy import tariffs on European steel,
04:02saying it hurts the domestic industry.
04:04The common market countries say they want new talks on limiting exports to the U.S.
04:09Special fares and discounts helped the nation's airlines hold their own in the past three months,
04:13but as ABC's Carl Rochelle reports, there is concern about the final half of this year.
04:18The results of the second quarter are mixed so far, but overall most airlines improved somewhat.
04:23Piedmont and U.S. Air made money.
04:24Republic is expecting to show improvement when its figures are released.
04:27Pan Am lost money, $56 million, but that's a considerable improvement over last year's second quarter when it lost $112
04:34million.
04:35American Airlines made a profit but only $466,000 as opposed to a $28 million profit in the second quarter
04:41last year.
04:42Most airlines, even those with bleak profit pictures, improved in June.
04:46And most are hoping to make an even better showing in this quarter, traditionally considered the most profitable of all.
04:52The profit is sorely needed for the next two quarters could be filled with economic pitfalls.
04:57Carl Rochelle, ABC News, Washington.

05:54The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still.
06:00But nobody wants to know him.
06:03They can see that he's just a fool.
06:06And he never gives an answer.
06:09But the fool on the hill sees the sun going down.
06:15And the eyes in his head see the wind spinning round.
06:36Well, in his way, his head in a cloud.
