00:00uh i saw another local story uh miller light is honoring women in the beer industry this fourth
00:09of july weekend with a limited edition can featuring the nation's first known professional
00:14female brewer and she was from philadelphia what a woman named mary uh how would you pronounce this
00:21last name l-i-s-l-e lizley lizle lyle lizzo lyle might be good okay mary lyle uh will have her name and
00:30portrait displayed on uh the cans of miller light that's excellent lyle uh if that's how you pronounce
00:37her last name became the first professional female brewer in the 13 colonies in 1734 when she took over
00:46the edinburgh brew house which was founded by her father henry baddock in 1685 she ran the business
00:53on the east side of second street near dock street until 1751 no daughter of mine is going to brew beer
00:59and she
01:04at the time it was considered very scandalous uh she was part of a rich community of beer manufacturers
01:10no daughter of mine is going to brew beer by god uh she was a uh a community of beer manufacturers
01:20in philadelphia but i'm good at it father at the time doesn't matter at the time the city was home
01:28you'll be considered a trollop by gum by gummy bear uh the city was home to over a hundred breweries more
01:35than anywhere else in the colonies and nearly twice as many as runner-up new york city so we
01:40really have had the corner on beer for a long time and when people come to the area um you know and
01:46like beer uh aficionados there's a lot to be found here and their their eyes get wide and glaze over
01:53with joy the city's strong reputation for beer was partly due to uh bad yeah what was that casing
02:01is that him five years oh this is the beer scene from jangle i thought it was maybe just the beer
02:10oh there it is yeah it's him serving these days i practice a new profession you can hear him pouring
02:15the beer yeah all right anyhow uh the city's strong reputation for beer was partly due to badcock william
02:20penn bought nearly 50 000 pints of beer from him between december of 1699 and march 1701 this is um
02:30okay but lyle may have been the first professional female brewer in what became the united states but
02:34she wasn't the first woman to make beer in the colonies by the time she got started there was
02:38already a decades-long tradition of housewives making brews for family and friends but she was
02:42the first professional brewer in the united states that's amazing it's actually something very uh very
02:47cool and then steve by the roaring 1920s there were burrs all over across this country from the west
02:54coast to the east coast young ladies are stepping up to brew beer this little lady has some sort of
03:00social disease i don't know why i mentioned that you can't see it under her large comments but i thought
03:06it might be of interest to you oh just an excuse to use that music and hear that voice everyone's
03:17getting drunk and having debaucherous sex unable to remember the multitude of partners they had the
03:23night before it's never been a better time for syphilis and gonorrhea
03:30the great social disease explosion of the 1920s oh man it's a good time for
03:36all the way up to the great depression yeah what's to be depressed about that scratching feeling
03:42around your testicles
03:47this was the cause of the great depression everybody it feels as if you're peeing razor blades
03:55that's depressing but this little gal has some freshly brewed home beer that'll turn your frown
04:05upside down as they rush you to the hospital with early onset dementia oh
04:12but then things change in the 1960s right casey we're gonna go oh yeah is that what you have california
04:18dream okay i was like he's just putting up these yeah these era type of music uh oh my god all right
