09:56we've got those two young rookies that are that are in there that they're showing up in practice and you've
10:01seen some plays that they've made already in the game too so and obviously the back end of the defense

10:10a couple teams and looking forward to seeing that the rest of the preseason.
10:14Ian I know the news came down today about James Pierce Jr. and he's going to miss eight games.
10:19When you think about what's going on now with your team how do you approach that when it comes to
10:25that particular position in camp as well as you go forward into the regular season.
10:30Yeah DJ I feel like it's one of those where you're all you're constantly evaluating each position right and in
10:35particular with with the defensive line.
10:37And you know it it was it was awful to see what happened to Jalen and then obviously we got
10:42the news with with with what's going to happen with James but we're constantly looking at each each position group.
10:47We're returning the bottom of the roster trying to create more and more competition and I said this earlier in
10:54the week to you know we're looking to make sure that we can continue to add depth to this roster
10:58whether they're going to be starters or whether they're going to be backups.
11:02We're always trying to raise the level of of the depth.
11:04Is that just because the competition that then it breeds it's going to breed success.
11:09I believe so.
11:10I think we believe so right.
11:11You see the energy out here you got guys fighting for the nickel position and outside corner and the tackle
11:16positions and all these positions and these guys are playing with energy again the scoreboard.
11:21It shows what it is right now.
11:23We got a lot to clean up but at the end of the day there are some flashes that you
11:27see from some of our young players and some of our vets.
11:30We were talking about this earlier as Denver takes over here.
11:33But you Matt Ryan and your new head coach are all in what seems like constant communication.

11:43I bet you wish you were on.
11:45I got to find the way.

11:47So is the group chat going on.
11:49Is this like you know just boys being boys and you guys are having some fun or is it all
11:53football all the time.
11:54It's a little bit of both.

11:56It's fun when you got the you know guys that come from a good place and and we are able
12:01to poke at each other.
12:02But also there's things that we see.

12:05And just want to make sure that we're in constant communication and and don't let let a ball drop.

12:26I'm just wondering when the whole position was coming up and and you're trying to figure out the head coach.
12:32What was it about Kevin that you guys pinpointed that you love so much?
12:37Yeah, obviously with Kevin, just a lot of respect for him in his career, what he's been able to accomplish,
12:42not just in Cleveland as a two time coach of the year, but also coming up under Brad Childress and
12:47in Minnesota,
12:50you know, just just with him.
12:51He's been he's been great to be with and work with, been able to talk to some people that have
12:56worked with him along the way.
12:57And everything that has always come out is just who the person is.
13:01He's a phenomenal guy.
13:02He's been a really good coach.
13:04And I can't wait to continue to develop our relationships along the way.
13:07A lot of one year deals for some of these veterans that you've brought in who are going to contribute.
13:12Big for this team.
13:13What's the philosophy behind that?
13:15And that's also paired with a heck of a cap space for next season as well.
13:19Yeah, there's a little bit of a little bit of those.
13:20Those two things, right?
13:21We knew that we didn't have a lot of cap space going into this year.
13:27We wanted to attack it, like I've mentioned before.
13:29Wanted to raise the level of our floor.
13:31I feel like we got some guys that were coming in here that were going to compete that have had
13:36been, you know,
13:37starters in their career, may have had injuries, may have fell out of favor for certain regions.
13:43But then we were able to give them a chance, and they knew that they were going to come in
13:46here and compete.
13:47And the same thing is, you know, we get those extensions done, and it still opens us up for activity
13:54in next year.
13:55Now, Ian, I would love to hear your thought process on this part of the game,
13:58because you're an O-lineman at heart, played at Virginia, a pretty good player yourself.

14:04When you look at, obviously there's a lot of conversation about the right tackle spot.
14:07You guys have had three or four guys interchanging there.
14:10You got four of the guys who've been there and done it.
14:13When you look at that spot, you got two lefties there.
14:16Protecting that backside is a big deal.
14:18What are some of the things you look for in the qualities of a guy who's playing in that position?
14:23Yeah.
14:24You know, it was unfortunate to, you know, for us just, you know,
14:27but highly respect Caleb McGarry as a player and a person in his decision.
14:33And in talking to his representation,
14:35we knew that we were going to need a guy that's, you know, had some starting experience.
14:39And Jawan Taylor was out there, right?
14:41And he's played a number of years in Jacksonville and Kansas City.
14:45Getting a player of his caliber who's been a starter at that time felt like it was a good move
14:50for us.
14:50But we also were able to draft Ethan in the seventh round.
14:53And if you guys have watched, I feel like he's continuing to come on and get better.
14:56So feel good about that position where it's at now with Jawan coming back.
15:01We're ramping him up.
15:02He's eager to get out there.
15:03He's been great to see in individual and just happy with some of the movement
15:08that we've been able to make at that position.
15:09And what are some of the key characteristics when you look at some of the stops you were at?
15:14Super Bowls, you've been there, you know what it's like where you have winning programs,
15:18draft, develop, retain your players.
15:21Those are some of the key things.
15:22What are some of those characteristics that you wanted to bring here with Atlanta
15:25that you saw in those spots where a lot of winning was done?
15:29Yeah, it's a passion for the game.
15:30You know, guys that are out there that love the game by, and you see it on the field.
15:34You know, guys flying around.
15:36And then that they, great teammates.
15:38Guys that want to play for one another, and it's not just selfish, right?
15:41The places that I've been, you've always had at least one leader in every room,
15:46and you felt like that was contagious throughout the whole organization.
15:49And just continuing for us and our scouting staff and our organizations
15:54to continue to bring in highly competitive people that love football
15:57and that love playing for one another.
15:59You mentioned the drafts and, you know, some of the guys who were taken.
16:04No first-round picks this year.
16:06Yet, we were talking about the players you got two through seven.
16:10They could all make the team, and they could all impact the team.
16:14How would you evaluate so far that draft class?
16:18Yeah, really proud of these guys.
16:19They came in.
16:20They're all workers.
16:22They want to get better.
16:24And I like to think that comes from a lot of the information that our scouts got at the school.
16:30We're big believers in character and accountability, guys that have mental and physical toughness,
16:36and all those guys embody that.
16:38So being able to bring guys in like that, it's unfortunate with Avion getting a little bit dinged up,
16:44but you start to see him come on, and you see his toughness and passion for the game,
16:48ability to go inside and outside.
16:50ZB, that punt return that he had over there, he's going to be electric, and it's exciting.
16:55But all those guys enjoy playing football, playing for one another, and are highly competitive.

18:14a drafted free agent from Minnesota State, Moorhead.
18:18He looks good on the rollout right there.

18:22Simon breaks a couple of tackles, and Simon is across the 45, down to the 42 as he picks up
18:2917.
18:29Yeah, before we get into Jack Strand, you just look at my man Simon here.
18:35Actually, he was the first tight end to lead the team in receptions yards at South Carolina.
18:40You can see the physicality that he runs with there.
18:43Yak is what it's all about.
18:44But 40 receptions, over 500 yards, seven touchdowns, led the team as a tight end.
18:53That don't happen too often, especially in a team like that.
18:56But Jack Strand, man, he is one of those guys that's coming in.
19:00And as a—I was talking to Matt Ryan about this before the game, and I said,
19:04I don't know if I was a rookie coming into the league, and he had to start camp,
19:10and he was in the huddle with Drake London.
19:12He was in the huddle with Kyle Pitts, and he's coming straight out of college,
19:16and he's having to run the first-team offense because Tua, hey, he started the season with a little back.
19:21He was a little coming into camp.
19:23And then you also had Michael Pennington who was still working his way through it.
19:25So he was the guy, as a rookie, running the show for the Falcons
19:29and did a really great job for the first four days of camp.
19:32You just watch the way he handles himself back there, how he throws the ball.
19:36He looks very comfortable.
19:40He's a big guy, too, with a heck of an arm.
19:45Tried to squeeze one in there.
19:48He's gotten pretty lucky, but talking to Coach Stefanski,
19:51and he's talking about how impressed he was with Jack coming in.
19:54It's his first play of camp, and he's running with the ones,
19:57but he was getting them in and out of the huddle.
20:00It's rare for a young undrafted guy to operate a system, let alone, like, the level he saw from him.
20:05He's getting them to the line, moving the mic point, getting the ball out versus pressure,
20:10and doing it again and again.
20:12The operation part, he said, was already high level when he first got here,
20:17and he's only going to grow.
20:18On third and seven down the sideline, and that was intended for Vinny Anthony II incomplete.
20:26And Coach, you talked about he looks confident throwing a football.
20:28Well, the young kid out of Minnesota State, 13,000 yards, 126 touchdowns in his college career.
20:37And this is a little inside fade here, almost laid it to him, gave him a chance,
20:41but this guy did nothing but throw the football in his four seasons at Minnesota State Moorhead.
20:46Last year, led the conference over 3,000 yards passing, 42 passes, the TDs.
20:53Yeah, he can stand in there and throw it.
20:55I'm actually looking forward to watching him the rest of this game to see what he has,

25:23He's a big-bodied guy who can really move in space and make some good catches.
25:28Could be a red zone threat for you as well.
25:30So, he's getting a great opportunity here.
