00:00:01They know.
00:00:30They know.
00:01:16Skylines trying to fight off the cloud cover.
00:01:18We're expecting some showers later in the afternoon.
00:01:22Today's weather report brought to you by...
00:01:25And...
00:01:26A rainy morning earlier today.
00:01:28It's held off for the time being and hopefully for game time will be okay.
00:01:33Getting ready to go for the 2026 preseason.
00:01:36And Jasmine Baker getting ready for year two under Ben Johnson.
00:01:40Rain or shine, Adam, the moment is here.
00:01:42And you can actually feel the excitement for year two of the Bears under Ben Johnson.
00:01:46Head coach Ben Johnson said that he was watching some tape from this time last year.
00:01:50And it was ugly.
00:01:52But, no worries.
00:01:53Because this time around, the players and coaches are all speaking the same language.
00:01:56And you can see how comfortable they are on and off the field.
00:01:59Especially with QB Caleb Williams.
00:02:01Their communication, Coach Johnson said, is less ahead than it was.
00:02:05Yet they're still just scratching the surface.
00:02:07Back to you guys.
00:02:07That Jasmine, the old drinking out of a fire hose metaphor comes to mind last year.
00:02:14It's been much easier here in this install for Ben Johnson in year two.
00:02:17Counting the playoffs, a 12-win year.
00:02:20That incredible comeback against Green Bay in the wild card.
00:02:24One of many comebacks engineered by Johnson, Williams, and the Bears.
00:02:30Tom Munkin is the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
00:02:33One of ten new head coaches in the NFL.
00:02:36Of course, his brother Ted, long-time suburban Chicago high school coach.
00:02:40He's got ties to this area.
00:02:42Chicago won the toss.
00:02:43They defeated.
00:02:44So, the Bears will receive.
00:02:46And Kyra Brown's strong campaign will deliver.
00:02:49Tylan Wallace on the return for Cleveland.
00:02:54And spins his way.
00:02:55Gets hit at the 25-yard line.
00:02:58That is Dante Manning making the stop.
00:03:01We will see alternating starts for the Cleveland Brown quarterbacks.
00:03:05It is Deshaun Watson taking over to start the preseason at QB.
00:03:09He and Shadur Sanders will split the reps today.
00:03:13Adam, this has been the realest quarterback competition in the NFL this offseason.
00:03:18Both have been consistent.
00:03:19I would say Shadur, though, reports out of Cleveland a little bit more consistent.
00:03:25Playability.
00:03:26See how Dennis Allen looks.
00:03:28Run the football right out of the gate with the excellent Quinshawn Judkins, who had a solid year last year.
00:03:34And a nice stop by DeMarco Jackson, the former New Orleans Saint, who has some ties to this group with
00:03:41Dennis Allen.
00:03:42He makes the stop.
00:03:42Yeah, when he filled in last year, I thought he was very capable.
00:03:46Led to team and tackles a couple games that really fireplug around the football.
00:03:50Flying to the football.
00:03:51And we'll see an interesting quarterback situation that Stacey dialed in there with the Browns.
00:03:55They've drafted three guys the past two years.
00:03:59Nobody's used more quarterbacks in the Super Bowl era than the Cleveland Browns.
00:04:03Here's another run play for DeMarco Jackson.
00:04:05He had big playability last year.
00:04:07Rookie Dylan Thieneman is there to help make the stop.
00:04:10He's one of two rookies in that back end.
00:04:13That brings us to our players to watch.
00:04:15Brought to you by Advocate Healthcare.
00:04:16Austin Booker is a name we know up front.
00:04:19Malik Muhammad is a newcomer in the back end.
00:04:21Yeah, I spoke with Austin Booker down on the field.
00:04:24Got a little wet down there because we got some weather.
00:04:27But his goal, guys, is to be the starting defensive end opposite Montez Sweat for this Bears team in the
00:04:33regular season.
00:04:34He would be my breakout player.
00:04:36If he can reach 10 sacks opposite Montez Sweat, that would be a bonus for the Chicago Bears
00:04:40and clear up a position that has been lacking for the past few seasons.
00:04:46Talking about a lot of speed.
00:04:49Some of the players we've mentioned.
00:04:51You look at the linebacker position.
00:04:52The Bears have added a lot.
00:04:53When you bring in Devin Bush, I played with his dad in Atlanta.
00:04:56He's been a fantastic player, whether in Pittsburgh and then in Cleveland.
00:04:59Bears signed him to a big deal.
00:05:01Hippolyte's got a lot of speed.
00:05:02We just covered Jackson.
00:05:03They bring back Jack Sanborn.
00:05:05So they've got a lot of speed at linebacker.
00:05:07And T.J. Edwards finally healthy.
00:05:09This is a speedy group at the second level.
00:05:13Maurice Alexander had a touchdown to the preseason last year.
00:05:16One of Ben Johnson's old buddies from Detroit.
00:05:19Grabs it at the 16.
00:05:21And a short return.
00:05:23They'll set up the Bears offense for the first time.
00:05:2526.
00:05:26What did Tyson tell us about Ben Johnson, fellas?
00:05:31He's intense.
00:05:33Completely captivating in meetings.
00:05:35He's on track, Bajan said, to be the greatest coach of all time.
00:05:38That's the impact that he has had overarchingly over this Bears franchise.
00:05:43I thought the word captivating stuck out in our conversation.
00:05:46The fact that he commands the room.
00:05:48Bajan has such respect for Johnson.
00:05:50Johnson gets after Tyson about as much as his father does.
00:05:54We all know about Travis Bajan as well, the longtime arm wrestling champion.
00:05:58Tyson now out of the air.
00:06:01And Roshan Johnson makes the grab for a short game.
00:06:03Well, it's fun as a quarterback.
00:06:06You're a play caller.
00:06:07That's aggressive.
00:06:08You know, for me, when I left the Bears, I joined John Gruden in Tampa.
00:06:11I'm telling you, I was captivated every meeting because he gave you answers.
00:06:15He gave you answers.
00:06:16And the way he delivered the message.
00:06:18And I think Ben Johnson has a little bit of John Gruden in him.
00:06:20He's giving the quarterback answers.
00:06:22They have command of the offense.
00:06:24And he's giving them direction to go to with anything they see.
00:06:27They can be aggressive.
00:06:28And that's fun.
00:06:31Handoff for Johnson.
00:06:33And he'll work his way to about the 28-yard line.
00:06:36It'll set up third down and medium.
00:06:38Yeah, you're not going to see DeAndre Swift today.
00:06:40You're not going to see Kyle Monungay today.
00:06:42You are going to see Roshan Johnson.
00:06:43And the biggest thing for that young man is healthy.
00:06:47Having spent quite a bit of time at their facility.
00:06:50They're rooting for that young man tremendously to stay healthy and stay the course.
00:06:55Only seven games last year.
00:06:57Injured thumb in November.
00:06:58He's been limited due to some injuries in the last calendar year.
00:07:02Empty here.
00:07:03For Bajan, multiple options.
00:07:05Maurice Alexander got held up in the middle of the field.
00:07:08And the throw is off target.
00:07:09So, it's a three and out for both offenses.
00:07:12Or Bears offense, I should say.
00:07:14To start this day.
00:07:16Yeah, I agree with you, Stacy.
00:07:18I think it's very competitive.
00:07:19You look at Salvan Ahmed, who they brought in.
00:07:22We'll talk about new running backs coach Eric Studisville.
00:07:24They like Salvan.
00:07:27But I do think Roshan is a short yardage, bruising role.
00:07:32But the health has been the key.
00:07:34He's good on special teams and provides a spark.
00:07:36And we'll see where that running back battle goes.
00:07:39Torrey Taylor with the delivery.
00:07:40This is Casey Concepcion, who has to backpedal all the way back to the 12-yard line.
00:07:45Excellent punt, but may have been an alley opening up for Concepcion, the rookie.
00:07:52He is a speedster, as you can tell, right out of the gate.
00:07:56Tony Fields made the stop.
00:07:58Both offenses empty on the first trips.
00:08:00Preseason.
00:08:01Brought to you by Advocate.
00:08:06Miller Lite.
00:08:09Chevy Drive Chicago.
00:08:12And by the Illinois Lottery.
00:08:15One of the best games in the NFL last year.
00:08:18The Iceman pose after the touchdown to D.J. Moore.
00:08:23The Jumpman throw after converting the fourth down.
00:08:26Some legendary moments against Green Bay, both in the regular season and playoffs.
00:08:30That was the one that inspired the Madden cover.
00:08:32Really fun in 2025.
00:08:34Deshaun Watson scrambling.
00:08:36We'll see what this penalty marker is about.
00:08:38Alex Kemp, veteran official, is our lead man.
00:08:42Flag here.
00:08:49A 60-yard punt by Taylor before the break.
00:08:53Tripping.
00:08:54Offense number 71.
00:08:5515-yard penalty.
00:08:57First down.
00:08:58Titus Howard, great tackle.
00:09:00Trade from Houston.
00:09:01Spent seven years with the Texans.
00:09:03Signed an extension with Cleveland.
00:09:04You see he tripped up Dio Odenbo there.
00:09:08Dio coming back from injury.
00:09:09The torn Achilles tendon.
00:09:11Again, like Stacey talked about, whether it's Dio, whether it's Austin Booker,
00:09:14it's got to be the player opposite Montez Sweat.
00:09:17He's averaged 10 sacks a year.
00:09:19If they can get a combination of opposite Montez Sweat,
00:09:23you'll have to do with gas defensively.
00:09:27So a tough penalty against Howard.
00:09:29That sets him back to first down in a quarter of the field for Cleveland.
00:09:32Off the fake to Judkins.
00:09:34With the check down.
00:09:35Watson does and eventually delivers over the middle to the tight end.
00:09:39That's Blake Whitehart, who got drilled by the returning Jack Sanborn.
00:09:44Spent last year with Dallas and Matt Eberflus back with the Bears this year.
00:09:48Yeah, he was really pleased to return to Chicago.
00:09:50And, you know, he plays with that violent style.
00:09:52He's got that Wisconsin brain.
00:09:54So pair him with T.J. Edwards back there.
00:09:55You've got a couple bright spots in Dennis Allen's defense,
00:09:59which plays a lot of man-to-man, which excites the...
00:10:04Edwards will play...
00:10:06...time as Wisconsin teammates.
00:10:09Sanborn was a freshman when Edwards was a senior.
00:10:12Watson, a nice floating pass over the middle.
00:10:15That's connected for a conversion to Jerry Judy.
00:10:18He gets a lot of that yardage back,
00:10:20so he'll set up a much more makeable third down.
00:10:22Josh Blackwell is there for the stop.
00:10:25Special teams may have been the last couple of years.
00:10:27This Browns offense has the potential,
00:10:29if they figure out their quarterback,
00:10:31to be very exciting with Jerry Judy and the two rookies.
00:10:34When you think about Denzel Boston, Casey, Concepcion,
00:10:37you saw the speed before our last break.
00:10:39And Isaiah Bond, who was under the top,
00:10:42but could have been drafted outside of some off-field last year.
00:10:45The big play threat is Isaiah Bond.
00:10:47That's what the Bears are dealing with.
00:10:49Some more talent for Cleveland on the outside today.
00:10:52Watson, nice little comeback route.
00:10:54That's a completion to the aforementioned rookie, Denzel Boston.
00:10:57And he's grabbed by Blackwell.
00:10:59It's a first down inside the Chicago 40-yard line.
00:11:01A good pickup of 17 to move the chains.
00:11:04Yeah, Chicago's had to move around this secondary a little bit.
00:11:06Blackwell has played safety.
00:11:08He's played nickel.
00:11:08Now he's on the outside here.
00:11:10They're giving Malik Muhammad the young fourth-round draft pick.
00:11:13He's getting out reps at the nickelback position
00:11:15just due to some injuries they've had.
00:11:17So we'll see how they shore it up.
00:11:19And as I mentioned, they have to gel with the...
00:11:23...guys going to be moving around and moving around in the preseason.
00:11:28Fresh set it down to the 37.
00:11:31I don't want to watch him.
00:11:33All right, he's in.
00:11:35More!
00:11:37Dudkins gets stacked up just a couple of yards past the line of scrimmage.
00:11:42So here is just who's in, who's out.
00:11:44These are some notable transactions, so a nice big-picture idea.
00:11:48The problem that we're running into that you guys have talked about,
00:11:51the injury bug in particular on the back end,
00:11:54Kobe Bryant, as Jim talked about, is going to be out for a long time.
00:11:57The Kobe Bryant injury is substantial, obviously.
00:12:00Coming off the Super Bowl, what he does on the...
00:12:05...over the defense.
00:12:06Ben Johnson, as you see on your screen, talking about, he's the template.
00:12:11But in my conversations, guys, he had already started taking over this defense
00:12:16as the lead voice amongst the entire unit.
00:12:19And it puts Thineman in a bad spot because now you're playing with the safety opposite.
00:12:24Thineman, who's a rookie, and he's figuring it out for himself.
00:12:26Now, whether it's going to be Cam Lewis or other guys who emerged at that position,
00:12:30they signed Xavier Woods from Tennessee.
00:12:32He looks to be the ultimate replacement,
00:12:34but the key is to settle out on that first-round draft pick
00:12:37who comes with a ton of talent and ball-hawking ability
00:12:39when you look at Thineman.
00:12:41Very physical player.
00:12:43Bryant and Thineman together, the Cleveland native,
00:12:45dealing with that knee injury.
00:12:46He had surgery last week, so he's going to be out
00:12:49for what feels like the regular season,
00:12:51unless he's got a quicker recovery.
00:12:54Pass rush getting to Watson.
00:12:56Had to get rid of it fast.
00:12:57Nearly dropped.
00:12:58It is.
00:12:59That was a problem for the Browns last year, too.
00:13:01And DeMarco Jackson got through the line, brought some heat.
00:13:05Thineman on the back end, and they team up for a fourth down.
00:13:09Well, one of the areas of strength the Bears deem their defense
00:13:13is directly up the middle, the interior defensive front.
00:13:16They think they run six deep there,
00:13:17and the pressure that they're able to get,
00:13:19but then you're able to throw somebody like DeMarco Jackson
00:13:23and become creative and use that exotic disguise.
00:13:26Outstanding job there.
00:13:28I thought Dennis Allen was the MVP of the defense last year.
00:13:31Just what he did with the missing parts, pieces they added.
00:13:34You know, Charlie Gardner-Johnson,
00:13:36who they added as the year went along,
00:13:38and he was masterful, especially in the playoffs.
00:13:41Andre Schmidt is able to get Cleveland on the board.
00:13:45He and Cairo Santos were sharp last year
00:13:48for their respective teams.
00:13:49Some solid stuff, though, for the defense.
00:13:51Josh Blackwell was heavily involved.
00:13:53DeMarco Jackson had a nice pass rush.
00:13:55Sandborn a nice tackle on that drive.
00:13:57All right.
00:14:00Teams from a year ago in the NFC, Bears and Carolina Panthers,
00:14:04and then the home opener 36 days away,
00:14:07right out of the gate, a divisional game at home
00:14:09against the Minnesota Vikings.
00:14:11A couple of close games that those two teams played a year ago.
00:14:14Cleveland, meanwhile, will open up against Jacksonville,
00:14:17the AFC South champion, for the season to go on opening day on the road.
00:14:27Schmidt will kick away.
00:14:30Maurice Alexander will bring it out.
00:14:32League average field position is about the 30.
00:14:34That's the goal to get to.
00:14:36He'll be a couple of yards shy of that,
00:14:38as the Bears will start their second offensive series
00:14:42halfway through this first quarter.
00:14:43New offensive coordinator is Press Taylor.
00:14:46He is in the booth right there.
00:14:49Of course, his brother will be seen next week.
00:14:51Zach is the Cincinnati head coach.
00:14:53Ben Johnson, of course, still the play caller,
00:14:55but we saw what the opportunity brings.
00:14:58Declan Doyle is now going to be calling plays
00:14:59for Jesse Minter in Baltimore this year.
00:15:01And make no mistake about it,
00:15:02the offensive coordinator role critical for Ben Johnson.
00:15:05Press Taylor, an encyclopedia and database of knowledge.
00:15:09He's been around for a long time.
00:15:11Doug Peterson for several years.
00:15:14The short run for Rojan Johnson picks up a couple.
00:15:18And I think they're going to stress that left side of the line.
00:15:21You know, Amagazi is getting an opportunity here in the first quarter,
00:15:24and he's been often injured since the Bears draft.
00:15:26He's got all kinds of measurables now, over 80 wingspan, all those things.
00:15:30But he's been injured.
00:15:31Only one start as a player,
00:15:32so they're going to test that left side of the line.
00:15:34They prefer to run to the right more often than not last season.
00:15:38They're one of the heaviest run to the right teams in the league.
00:15:41Why not, man?
00:15:42You've got Darnell Wright over there.
00:15:44Big Penne Sewell, right?
00:15:46Ben Johnson, when he was in Detroit,
00:15:48they ran over Penne Sewell with the right side 70% of the time.
00:15:51And the uptick in percentage with Darnell Wright,
00:15:53and I think Jonah Jackson's been awesome too.
00:15:55That is a good power right side for the Chicago Bears,
00:15:58and it proved it with how the Bears ran the football last season.
00:16:01They were a top-10 group running the ball.
00:16:03Top three in the league,
00:16:03and two years ago when Johnson was the offensive coordinator in Detroit,
00:16:06they were a top-six running team with Sewell on their right side.
00:16:09Of course, both of his brothers are on the Bears now,
00:16:12Defy and Noah.
00:16:14Off the fingertips of the intended target,
00:16:16trying to find Sam Rouse.
00:16:17So the first target for the rookie out of Stanford,
00:16:20tight end U, as it's come to be known over time.
00:16:24This is tight end coach Jim Dre, a former Stanford Cardinal as well.
00:16:27He might be the most aggressive player mentally on the Bears offense.
00:16:31When he lined up day one of camp, Sam Rouse,
00:16:34he was up against Montez Sweat and wanted to bury him.
00:16:37Everybody got a chuckle out of that, Jim.
00:16:39He's a throwback, man.
00:16:42Love it.
00:16:42They kind of bet within the organization,
00:16:44like which guy is going to start a fight at practice?
00:16:48A lot of bets were on Sam Rouse.
00:16:51Another boomer from Taylor.
00:16:53He had a 60-yarder earlier.
00:16:55This is going to be about a 50-yarder.
00:16:59Great coverage.
00:16:59Great coverage as well.
00:17:02Nowhere to go for Gage Larvadain,
00:17:05and Torrey Taylor proves his worth once again.
00:17:07The Aussie now in his third year with the Bears
00:17:10as the punter flips the field.
00:17:15The company this year, headlined by Dylan Thienemann,
00:17:19who started his college career at Purdue, transferred to Oregon.
00:17:22We're going to see a lot of Malik Muhammad today as well.
00:17:25Jordan Vandenberg is out there.
00:17:26So, the last several years, it's been offense first, skill positions first.
00:17:31This year, the Bears, their first pick going back to the defensive end.
00:17:36Still Deshaun Watson at quarterback.
00:17:38He'll float it for Dylan Sampson, and nowhere to go.
00:17:42And what do you know?
00:17:43The rookie, Malik Muhammad, stays right on cue.
00:17:45Yeah, I got a bone to pick with Malik Muhammad, guys.
00:17:48Love him, but he intercepted my Sooners twice last year.
00:17:52In what game?
00:17:53In the Red River rivalry.
00:17:54Now, this guy is athletic, man.
00:17:56He is super fast.
00:17:57We saw the measurables in Indianapolis.
00:17:59We saw them at his pro day, and he gives us a little flex here.
00:18:04Nickel, cornerback, they're going to need to use him, Jim, all over the place.
00:18:07Yeah, he was drafted to be an outside corner, but now with the speed that he showed at the combine,
00:18:12he ran a 4-4-2.
00:18:13That is a really good time for a cornerback, and they like his physicality.
00:18:17They're for the half.
00:18:19That's what Dennis Allen has talked about, and that's why they're throwing him at nickel.
00:18:22Your nickel player has to be physical for two-way goes on the inside, and he has shown that.
00:18:27He's getting an opportunity as a rookie right here, and we'll see what he does with it.
00:18:31But baptism by fire, you've got to see what a guy can do, and he's getting that opportunity today.
00:18:35Jasmine with the injury to Kyler Gordon.
00:18:37These are huge opportunity reps for Malik Mohamed, the rookie out of Texas, the fourth-round pick.
00:18:42And he is cherishing every first-team rep he gets.
00:18:44He said it's a little bit difficult playing both corner and nickel, but he's getting the hang of it.
00:18:49And when he was a freshman at Texas, he started every game there.
00:18:52So I was talking to him about it, and he said, you know, I've done this before.
00:18:55I know there's nothing to lose and everything to gain, so he's going to go out there and keep making
00:18:59plays.
00:18:5941 games in his three years at Texas.
00:19:03Got a lot of experience.
00:19:04Watson threads the needle, just shy of the sticks.
00:19:07Catch is made by the rookie, Casey Concepcion.
00:19:10Tackle made by Ruben Hippolite to pick up a nine.
00:19:13And to Jasmine's point, Adam and Jim, for this Dennis Allen defense, when you're playing that nickel spot,
00:19:19critical for Dennis Allen is your eyes, your anticipation and your eyes.
00:19:23He talks about it often.
00:19:24Things happen so much faster at nickel.
00:19:27Reaction time has to be better.
00:19:28The rookie's going to have to catch up to speed quickly.
00:19:31Kyler Gordon signed one of the biggest contracts for a slot cornerback in NFL history,
00:19:35obviously dealing with the injury right now.
00:19:37It's been lingering since last year.
00:19:40First down pickup on the ground by Sampson.
00:19:42So Cleveland moves the chains, at least from the initial look.
00:19:46And that's where the Bears want to be better at stopping the run.
00:19:49They were 27th in the league last year.
00:19:51Andrew Billings gone.
00:19:52They bring in Neville Gallimore.
00:19:54Kentavious Street was a fourth-round pick by the 49ers.
00:19:58And, of course, you got Grady Jarrett in there.
00:20:01But Jordan Vandenberg has really surprised us a sixth-round pick.
00:20:04Quick first step, very athletic.
00:20:06And we'll see if this interior D-line can improve tremendously.
00:20:10The virtual measurement here on a play that looked to be, from the naked eye, past the sticks.
00:20:14But they'll check the virtual measurement.
00:20:18Still waiting for it here at the stadium as well.
00:20:21I think it was Gallimore on the stop there.
00:20:24All those guys are going to be key.
00:20:25Those are names, as you talked about, Jimmy, these are veteran names up front
00:20:29that they brought in to try to plug up that middle.
00:20:31And Kentavious Street, Jim mentioned, may have the best camp so far
00:20:36amongst all these interior defensive linemen.
00:20:3949ers drafted him.
00:20:40He tore his ACL at his pro day.
00:20:42And they still drafted him in the fourth round.
00:20:44Yep.
00:20:452018, he tore that right ACL.
00:20:47Came back the next year.
00:20:48It was interesting to talk with Ben Johnson this week
00:20:51and how he sees his defensive front.
00:20:54But, by and large, the Bears see the interior, as I mentioned and alluded to prior,
00:20:58as really a strength of their unit.
00:21:00They believe that they're going to be able to have such a rotation
00:21:02that they can wear people down in the fourth quarter.
00:21:06To hear Ben Johnson say, I think we might be a little underrated up there,
00:21:09I thought was interesting.
00:21:10Well, they got the pieces to move around.
00:21:12New York says, bring out the chains.
00:21:14Oh, we're going old school.
00:21:16Going old school.
00:21:16Bring out the chains.
00:21:17The chain gang's back.
00:21:19So the virtual measurement.
00:21:20Again, the chain gang never went away.
00:21:21It was just rare to see them with the virtual measurements last year.
00:21:23But they're the backups now.
00:21:24They're the backups to the backups.
00:21:26Maybe the virtual just didn't work today.
00:21:27Oh, the old broadcaster joke is it's preseason for the virtual measurement as well.
00:21:32I don't know if we could assign real attributes to autonomous machines,
00:21:36but here we are in 2026.
00:21:37Remember in the Monday night game in Pittsburgh, they had the chain gang.
00:21:42It was duct tape.
00:21:42The chain, they put duct tape on it.
00:21:45Jim, how pissed were you when the spot of the ball was wrong when you played?
00:21:49Bring back the duct tape.
00:21:50It's the fix-all for everything.
00:21:51I like old school.
00:21:52Let's do it that way.
00:21:53You mentioned your old buddy John Gruden.
00:21:54I'm thinking about him calling that Outback Bowl with South Carolina and Michigan
00:21:58when they've missed the call completely.
00:22:00Spurrier's out on the field, and then the next play, Clowney blows it up
00:22:03and gets the ball back for the Gamecocks.
00:22:05Fourth and inches here for Cleveland.
00:22:07They'll sneak it with Watson, and after all that, a moot point.
00:22:10And a first down for Deshaun.
00:22:14Missed all of 2025 as he re-tore that Achilles.
00:22:17He's only made 19 starts in four years with Cleveland.
00:22:20He's missed 49 of a possible 68 games.
00:22:24And obviously everything off the field has been a major issue.
00:22:27Shador Sanders, we'll see in the second half,
00:22:30he went 3-4 as a starter as a rookie last year,
00:22:33and then Dylan Gabriel was 1-5 a year ago.
00:22:36And he's kind of the odd man out is Dylan Gabriel,
00:22:38and they drafted him higher than what they did Shador Sanders.
00:22:41And plus they drafted the Arkansas product this year.
00:22:44Taylon Green.
00:22:45Yeah, Taylon Green, who can run.
00:22:47We might see him at, like, tight end at some point for Cleveland.
00:22:50Definitely.
00:22:52And not to mention, brand-new offensive line
00:22:54for these Browns.
00:22:55Who are trying to gel together in a delay of game.
00:22:59Delay of game, offense.
00:23:00Five-yard penalty, first down.
00:23:03Brand-new offensive line.
00:23:05Cleveland still doesn't know who the quarterback's going to be.
00:23:07This is going to be a true competition.
00:23:09Sanders is going to start their game next week
00:23:12as he'll start the second half today.
00:23:14And thankfully for Tom Munkin,
00:23:16he has a new offensive line with which to work.
00:23:19Yeah, and their bugaboos are going to be
00:23:20that communication and developing.
00:23:22Spencer Fano's going to highlight it there.
00:23:23You see Big 55 on the left side out of Utah.
00:23:26He's their first rounder.
00:23:27When you draft a guy like that,
00:23:29you love the direction your franchise is going.
00:23:31Spencer Fano, that left tackle,
00:23:33he was the number nine pick out of Utah.
00:23:35He was outstanding in college.
00:23:36Spencer Fano, guys, was just a delight and a thrill.
00:23:40He is infectious.
00:23:40But this entire Browns offensive line,
00:23:44with the exception of Tevin Jenkins, is new.
00:23:46Former Bear.
00:23:49There is Fano.
00:23:50Good penetration once again by this front.
00:23:52And there's Daniel Hardy, along with Jordan Vandenberg up front.
00:23:57Trying to plug up the middle.
00:23:58We talk about run defense.
00:24:01It helps when your front can stop the run.
00:24:03That forces longer pass situations.
00:24:05Dennis Allen would love to go man-to-man.
00:24:07He may not have that same luxury at times this year,
00:24:10but he would love to be able to throw extra bodies in on a pass rush, too,
00:24:14to help that portion of the defense out.
00:24:17Second along for Watson.
00:24:18They get it down to Sampson in space.
00:24:20There's a burst of speed and a broken tackle for Dylan Sampson
00:24:24all the way down inside the 35.
00:24:27He is the change of pace running back,
00:24:29and you saw the change of pace right there,
00:24:32finally run out of bounds after a long pickup.
00:24:34Yeah, it looked like a delayed screen left all the time.
00:24:36You see James Lynch.
00:24:37He's putting the pressure on Deshaun, and they're the open field.
00:24:40They get the blocks downfield.
00:24:41You mentioned the missed tackles.
00:24:42That can't happen.
00:24:43A little friendly fire there as you take out your teammate.
00:24:46Big gain for the Browns.
00:24:4743-yard run for Dylan Sampson.
00:24:50The guy on your screen, though, that ultimately made the tackle,
00:24:53Xavier Woods.
00:24:54The Bears so fortunate to pick him up,
00:24:55given the attrition in the secondary.
00:24:57121 starts.
00:24:59That's a lot of experience.
00:25:04Off the play-action fake.
00:25:05Mike Watson, nothing there.
00:25:08Good coverage downfield, and he gets wrapped up by Daniel Hardy.
00:25:14Initial pressure got to Watson from James Lynch,
00:25:18and then Hardy finishes it off.
00:25:19Excellent coverage on the back end, too.
00:25:22Yeah, Daniel Hardy, he's always been kind of the talk of camp,
00:25:25and then the season rolls around and somewhat fades on the practice squad,
00:25:28but good coverage downfield for the front four to get the tackle.
00:25:34Nobody open.
00:25:36Xavier Woods, part of that back end.
00:25:39Ten-year veteran, fifth NFL team, reunited with Al Harris,
00:25:42who he was with in Dallas several years ago.
00:25:46There's a run for Amani Marshall.
00:25:49He'll work it down to the 26-yard line.
00:25:51That'll bring up third down.
00:25:53Xavier Woods is going to be a key.
00:25:54Obviously, the loss of Kobe Bryant really hurts.
00:25:57You're not getting the same speed with Woods,
00:25:59but you're getting savvy, a guy who has played in multiple systems
00:26:02and has been a ball hawk in his career.
00:26:04He's a hold-down-the-fork type of guy.
00:26:06That's why you sign a guy with his experience.
00:26:08And, hey, we know Kobe Bryant.
00:26:10That guy's a world champion, as Stacey talked about.
00:26:13He's a nasty player.
00:26:14He's a great player, but he's going to be gone.
00:26:16You need to hold the fourth-down guy to team along
00:26:19with a young rookie in Dylan Thienemann.
00:26:21He's the right guy for the job.
00:26:23Ten of the Bears defenders up at the line of scrimmage.
00:26:26Mohamed trying to get over to the rookie Concepcion
00:26:29and unable to bring him down before he picks up the first down.
00:26:33Yeah, a little rough play at the line of scrimmage,
00:26:35and you see him.
00:26:36It's a twist.
00:26:36So he gets caught up in the wash there,
00:26:39unable to get off quickly enough,
00:26:41and that's why Concepcion is wide open.
00:26:43He'll have to get better at the line of scrimmage.
00:26:45When you do the twist plays and the rough plays
00:26:47where the receivers are rubbing against each other,
00:26:49he'll get better at that.
00:26:50He has not played a lot of nickel.
00:26:51This is really his first experience, and it is.
00:26:54It's baptism by fire for Malik Mohamed.
00:26:56Can't imagine he liked a Texas A&M guy
00:26:58catching a pass in front of him,
00:26:59and he's a Texas long hard.
00:27:01That'll take us to the end of the opening quarter.
00:27:03Browns have the lone points,
00:27:05and they're threatening in the Bears' red zone on the other side of this break.
00:27:10First 15 minutes of the preseason down.
00:27:12A lot of excitement, as you can imagine,
00:27:14after what we saw in 2025.
00:27:16Football is brought to you by Advocate Healthcare,
00:27:19the official healthcare partner of the Chicago Bears.
00:27:23Bears hosting their first-ever Bears-Peanuts kids game here at Soldier Field.
00:27:28So the characters are out.
00:27:30Peppermint Patty.
00:27:31Yep.
00:27:32Linus up here.
00:27:33Don't you guys know your Schultz characters?
00:27:35Listen, I mean, don't get me started on the greatness of Vince Guaraldi.
00:27:39You see the Dance Like Lucy and Dance Like the Peanuts characters right now.
00:27:45Here's a little trickery for Concepcion.
00:27:48He's working from the receiver spot on the rush,
00:27:51trying to get to the end zone, and he does.
00:27:55Casey, Concepcion, they are very excited about having this rookie number 24 pick out of Texas A&M.
00:28:01Yeah, it becomes just a ghost play around, and he's got a ton of speed.
00:28:05He did have a lot of drops in college, but it's a quick hitting play.
00:28:09Ends up becoming an outside zone run, able to get to the speed, to the pylon.
00:28:13He had seven drops last year and talked openly about them, and it was a concentration issue.
00:28:18We've had Tyreek Hill comparisons, okay, throughout camp.
00:28:21This guy was a production monster throughout college, as you alluded to most recently at Texas A&M,
00:28:27and they're going to use him all over the formation.
00:28:29Todd Munkin has gone, in terms of formations, 3x1, for instance, 2x2, Adam,
00:28:34because of the speed they have at receiver, they have at receiver.
00:28:38We're going to double-check to see if he broke the plane.
00:28:42You did see the pylon get knocked down.
00:28:43If contact was made with the ball on the pylon before Concepcion was ruled out of bounds or down,
00:28:49then it's a touchdown.
00:28:50Yeah, I think Hippolyte was there.
00:28:52I think it was Hippolyte, the linebacker, that ultimately knocked him out.
00:28:56Looking for a knee or out of bounds.
00:28:59If he banged that pylon first, that'll be confirmed, it looks like that.
00:29:07After you, the ruling on the field stands.
00:29:10It's a touchdown.
00:29:12Nothing to overturn the call on the field, which was a touchdown,
00:29:16so Casey Concepcion in his preseason NFL debut has a touchdown for Cleveland.
00:29:21Andre Schmidt will be on for the extra point.
00:29:295-12 last in the AFC North last year.
00:29:33It was a tough last couple of seasons offensively for Kevin Stefanski who's now in Atlanta.
00:29:41And it's a 10-0 start for Cleveland.
00:29:44Malik Muhammad came flying in to try to block that PAT attempt.
00:29:48As Stacey talked about, we're not going to see Caleb Williams today.
00:29:50We may not see him in the preseason.
00:29:52Ben Johnson feels pretty good about the reps that he's going to get,
00:29:55not only in camp but in the joint practices.
00:29:59But you can understand why there's a lot of anticipation to see this guy back on a football field.
00:30:03The Iceman, with all of the comeback victories that this team put together a season ago,
00:30:08that's one of the highlights of what was a historically strong season for a Bears quarterback.
00:30:15Yeah, there's just so much excitement around Caleb Williams.
00:30:17You talk to anybody in the building, and Ben Johnson told us this week,
00:30:21his ability to rattle off plays is at another level right now.
00:30:25It has been night and day.
00:30:26We heard Jasmine's opening report, and she was right on track with it.
00:30:31And I think the most unique conversation that I've had, fellas,
00:30:33is the joy is back for Caleb Williams.
00:30:37He had white knuckles on the steering wheel.
00:30:40And this thing was truly drinking water from a fire hose.
00:30:44He's much more relaxed.
00:30:46He's got more command, Jim, and he's a lot more comfortable at the Linus.
00:30:49He knows what he's doing now.
00:30:51That's why he's able to rip off the plays.
00:30:52Go ahead, Adam.
00:30:53Well, Alexander on the return.
00:30:55I wanted to ask you about that.
00:30:56We're going to watch Caleb Williams in his pregame routine.
00:30:59Give me a sense of how much easier it was for you in the second year of the system,
00:31:03not have to learn a new offensive language.
00:31:06Just give me a sense of the ease now.
00:31:08Yeah, it's smoother.
00:31:09It's just everything's smoother.
00:31:10You know, like last year, he even mentioned, you know,
00:31:12we'd fight to get through a 15-play script.
00:31:14We'd only get through nine of them because there's a lot of coaching going on.
00:31:17Now, since they're further along, they're able to get through 15 plays,
00:31:20and they're doing more coaching, more details.
00:31:22He's more advanced in the offense, getting in and out of plays.
00:31:26So, he's a confident player.
00:31:27And what I loved about him last year, Adam, his interceptions with that big play here.
00:31:31Bajin to Davis.
00:31:33Caden Davis, the former Cleveland Brown.
00:31:35Big connection with Tyson Bajin, and they work into Cleveland territory down inside the 40.
00:31:41He has had an outstanding training camp, and as you see him just take off,
00:31:45a little in route here across the middle slant.
00:31:48He's been averaging, guys, about 30 yards per catch in training camp.
00:31:53I mean, he has been incredible.
00:31:54They called him White Lightning when he was there in Cleveland because of his speed.
00:31:58I think Scotty Miller and Caden Davis provide that speed.
00:32:01He has made flash plays.
00:32:0341-yard connection to Davis.
00:32:05There's a drop by Roshan Johnson on the Bajin delivery.
00:32:08That brings up second down.
00:32:10But getting back to Caleb Williams,
00:32:12the key is his sacks went down and his interceptions went down.
00:32:15He was masterful last year.
00:32:16I know from John Shoup, who has been Johnson's mentor,
00:32:19for me, those are the ultimate no-nos.
00:32:20There are times where you cannot take a sack.
00:32:23No sack, no plays.
00:32:24He's very conscious of getting the ball out of his hand.
00:32:27Where he's got to be better is the first and third quarter.
00:32:30You know, we know he's he-man when the game's on the line.
00:32:33He makes all the clutch plays.
00:32:35He's that impressive.
00:32:36But he's got to make the layups is where he's got to get a lot better.
00:32:40Davis got hit, was juggling that football,
00:32:43and he took quite the lick from Winston Reed.
00:32:45Could not hold on to it, and that brings up third down.
00:32:48Davis smarting a little bit after that one.
00:32:50Well, if you want to make the roster, you've got to make that catch.
00:32:55You're right.
00:32:55Those are routine plays.
00:32:57Hey, he's open.
00:32:57He's got it in his bread basket.
00:32:59Got to squeeze it.
00:33:00You're going to take the hit.
00:33:01You know you're going to get hit.
00:33:02Might as well just have the ball in your hands when you take it.
00:33:05Spent some time as a kick returner the last couple of years.
00:33:07Played in three games in the regular season with Cleveland the last two seasons,
00:33:11Caden Davis.
00:33:14This will be blown dead.
00:33:15Smart play by Tyson.
00:33:17We saw action in the neutral zone, took the snap, free five yards.
00:33:21Julian O'Quara.
00:33:22Neutral zone infraction.
00:33:24Defense number 99.
00:33:25Five-yard penalty.
00:33:27Still third.
00:33:27Work the snap count.
00:33:29Work the snap count.
00:33:29Make it a weapon.
00:33:30You go from third and ten to third and five.
00:33:32This guy, this Tyson Bajan, they've got a great quarterback room when you look at the Bears.
00:33:37With Case Keenum and the way this young man has developed from Shepard
00:33:40and Caleb Williams and his ability,
00:33:42this is probably one of the better quarterback rooms around the National Football League without a doubt.
00:33:46And it's the same in terms of the top three in the room this year as it was last year.
00:33:51Some continuity in there, too.
00:33:54Bajan on third and medium.
00:33:56We'll come back route.
00:33:57That's a floater for Alexander.
00:33:58And it gets broken up nicely by the Cleveland secondary.
00:34:02It was Michael Coates, the rookie out of West Virginia, getting in front of Maurice.
00:34:07Yeah, really didn't get the separation and why I believe Tyson kind of tried to back shoulder him there.
00:34:12Maybe if he could have back shoulder a little bit more,
00:34:13may have given his receiver an opportunity there.
00:34:16Good coverage.
00:34:17But fall short.
00:34:18Let's score an opportunity here.
00:34:19Got themselves in the field goal range with the snap count and drawing them off sides.
00:34:24Cairo Santos now has the most 50-yard field goal makes in Chicago Bears history.
00:34:28Passed Robbie Gold for that mark last year.
00:34:31Cairo now in his seventh consecutive season with the Bears.
00:34:38This one's going to be wide to the left in his first attempt.
00:34:42To the Bears still, not on the board.
00:34:45Cleveland gets the stop and they'll take over on the other side, leading 10 and under.
00:34:53That's Soldier Field for this Bears preseason opener.
00:34:57How are we feeling about Soldier Field right now, guys, and Hammond, Indiana?
00:35:03We're going to find out.
00:35:04We'll have some questions to ask our friend George McCaskey here coming up.
00:35:09Let's talk with him in the third quarter.
00:35:10And that will be the pressing question, certainly.
00:35:13Watson over the middle on first down, and he connects with Isaiah Fond to pick up eight yards in front
00:35:20of Malik Mohamed.
00:35:22Mohamed, you talked about it, Stacey.
00:35:23You saw him take the ball away a couple of times against the Sooners last year.
00:35:27Bears, as a group, were tops in the NFL.
00:35:30Well, you guys know it is hard to recreate 30-plus takeaways year over year.
00:35:35The Cowboys are the only team that's done that this century in the NFL, 30-plus and lead the league
00:35:41in back-to-back seasons.
00:35:42So that's going to be one of the challenges for not only Dennis Allen, but Al Harris with that piecemeal
00:35:48back end as well.
00:35:49It really is because it's unknown.
00:35:50Nishan Wright was outstanding last year.
00:35:52I mean, you think about him.
00:35:53He had eight interceptions.
00:35:54Kevin Byard was a ball hawk as well.
00:35:57But now you've got some unknowns that you do love.
00:36:00I do love Dylan Thiedemann's ball hawking ability and what he showed at Oregon and Purdue.
00:36:04And guys are going to have to emerge.
00:36:05What I think, too, is key is, one, the health of the corners, whether it's Gordon at nickel corner because
00:36:11he creates a lot of havoc.
00:36:13And Stevenson and Jalen Johnson, their contract years, they chose those two guys to stay here.
00:36:19Rather than re-sign Nishan Wright, they believe that Tyreek Stevenson in a contract year is going to show up.
00:36:24We'll see.
00:36:25Here's the speed of Concepcion again.
00:36:27Boy, they are not shy about using him in multiple facets.
00:36:31Another nice run for the rookie.
00:36:32Stays more on that defense.
00:36:33Yeah, no answers for him today.
00:36:35But defensively, how about the Bears?
00:36:37Just to put it in perspective, 9-0 when they had multiple takeaways last season.
00:36:41They were 2-6 with one or fewer.
00:36:43That was their bread and butter.
00:36:44Every time I had a Bears game, I turned around and I thought, there's no way.
00:36:47And then all of a sudden, you have six games with three-plus takeaways.
00:36:51It was a miraculous season defensively, turning the football over.
00:36:55And I've got to be honest, a lot of the reason is they were not good on first and second
00:36:58down defensively,
00:36:59which creates situations where teams were throwing the ball and they got a lot of turnovers.
00:37:04But they need to stop the run and why they really retooled this defensive front.
00:37:09And we'll see if they will get better at rushing the passer.
00:37:13Samson ends up pounding ahead to set up a short situation on third down.
00:37:18We've heard the word regression a lot.
00:37:20Ben Johnson talked about it.
00:37:21I understand that could be the case offensively.
00:37:24Regression is more of a factor on defense in this league when you've had a really, really good season.
00:37:29So I'll be fascinated to see how guys like Devin Bush enter into the fray of the defensive end this
00:37:34year.
00:37:35Third down and one.
00:37:37Marshall is the back for Cleveland.
00:37:38Cleveland, he'll get the carry, and Grubin Hippolite is there to stop him shy of the line to gate.
00:37:45Grubin Hippolite's a player that the Bears simply want more of.
00:37:49And it starts with special teams for this young man.
00:37:52But just a nice job here penetrating the line of scrimmage and finding that goal to minimize the offensive game.
00:38:01But again, Hippolite will see the field and have a chance to be active on game days
00:38:05if the job he does on special teams improves.
00:38:08Nothing against Edmonds, but he's not as fast as the group that the Bears have this year.
00:38:13With Devin Bush, T.J. Edwards returning.
00:38:15I mentioned Jackson and Hippolite.
00:38:17They've got a ton of speed at lineback.
00:38:20Watson running out of time.
00:38:21That ball gets knocked out of his hands.
00:38:22And sure enough, right on cue, a takeaway for the Bears' defense.
00:38:26It was knocked away by Jamry Cuomo.
00:38:31And he picks it up for Chicago.
00:38:33Did we not time it up?
00:38:37Perfect conversation topic right on cue.
00:38:42Jamry Cuomo in his third season with the Bears providing the punch and the scoop.
00:38:55And again, excellent coverage allows the rush to get to the quarterback.
00:39:01And Jamry Cuomo.
00:39:04Johnny on the spot with the punch of Watson.
00:39:07The ball out.
00:39:08And the former Rutgers Scarlet Knight and JMU star with the take.
00:39:2220-24 spent a month with New England's practice squad.
00:39:26Came back to the Bears and still hoping to have his first opportunity in a regular season game.
00:39:31But Jamry Cuomo gets the tackle for loss, the forced fumble, and the recovery.
00:39:35And sets Tyson, Bajin, and the Bears' offense up just shy of midfield.
00:39:42Off the fake to Johnson, the rollout, and there is Sam Roush on the reception.
00:39:47His first in a Chicago Bears uniform, and it's delivered on target by Bajin.
00:39:52Regular set, good first down set.
00:39:54You're just running the bootleg out of an eye-near formation.
00:39:57Quick, easy decision to Carlson.
00:40:00Or, excuse me, Sam Roush, the tight end.
00:40:02I was thinking Carlson was in there.
00:40:03That's Sam.
00:40:04Nice draft pick out of Stanford.
00:40:07I really like him, man.
00:40:08He is an old-school tight end that's going to be very physical if the Bears go 13 personnel.
00:40:12Yeah, he's sneaky athletic as well, Jim.
00:40:15Johnson gets hit hard in the back there.
00:40:17If you spend some time at training camp, you'll see that 12 personnel and 13 personnel come to life
00:40:22where you have the two tight ends, the three tight ends.
00:40:24In fact, the formation in the last play that we saw there from Sam Roush,
00:40:28you see the graphic on our screen here.
00:40:30Look at the percentage of 13 personnel that the Rams had to go to last year.
00:40:35In some respects because of injuries, as we talked to Ben Johnson about,
00:40:38but the Steelers drop all the way to 13th.
00:40:40The Bears sitting there at 8th.
00:40:42I think that number's going to increase.
00:40:44I think this number's going to go up across the board.
00:40:46The Rams were at 30% last year to lead the league.
00:40:48The year before that, Arizona and Pittsburgh were around 15% to lead the league.
00:40:53That trend is going in the direction of tight end usage.
00:40:56They can block and pass catch.
00:40:59They can block for Roshon Johnson.
00:41:01And a big pickup for the former Texas Longhorn.
00:41:05Nice block by Kyle Hurdle.
00:41:06Yeah, this will please Ben Johnson because this is his bread and butter, the run game.
00:41:10And you see...
00:41:11Yeah, you see Roush there with the down block there.
00:41:14I mean, they're physical.
00:41:15And like you said, it shows it's a hard run showing is what it is.
00:41:20And you can still do a lot of play-action passes off of gap schemes, off of zone schemes.
00:41:24And you really create mismatches.
00:41:26Alexander on the cross.
00:41:27He's in.
00:41:28Another preseason game.
00:41:29Another Maurice Alexander touchdown.
00:41:47Maurice Alexander has had a fast, fun camp for the Chicago Bears.
00:41:51And he just finds the crossing route here.
00:41:54He finds the space, finds the void.
00:41:57And what's really cool, he obviously spent time with Ben Johnson previously.
00:42:00But just another speedster.
00:42:02The speed on this offense for the Chicago Bears should have Bears fans incredibly excited and optimistic.
00:42:08He spent three years in Detroit with Ben Johnson.
00:42:13Santos adds the extra point.
00:42:15And a quick strike offense taking advantage of the excellent field position a couple of big plays later.
00:42:21And the Bears are in the end zone for the first time.
00:42:24Second season with the Bears for the former undrafted free agent.
00:42:28And Tyson Bajan delivers to Alexander for the score.
00:42:59Scoring drive summary brought to you by Chevy Drives Chicago.
00:43:00And this will be a touchback.
00:43:04So, good field position for Cleveland.
00:43:07Back to the score.
00:43:09Yeah, I do like this misdirection right here.
00:43:12It becomes basically a boot throwback.
00:43:14Knowing the whole time he's going to come back to Alexander on the crossing route.
00:43:17Gets the defense out of position.
00:43:20Nice throw and easy catch for Alexander.
00:43:23So, that's the best.
00:43:24They finally settled down as an offense that drive.
00:43:26Had a couple of big runs.
00:43:28Obviously, he was 100% on his pass plays.
00:43:30And here they find the end zone.
00:43:32Play action was so important in Detroit for Ben Johnson.
00:43:35That's going to continue to be a factor for this offense in Chicago.
00:43:38Yeah, knocking on the door, Adam, 47, 48% when it comes to play action for Caleb Williams.
00:43:44But the misdirection in Ben Johnson's offense is why the players call him a genius.
00:43:48And his level of preparation and detail at the line of scrimmage is exceptional.
00:43:54Watson on the handoff for Marshall and Neville Gallimore is there.
00:43:59This is a big veteran body up front.
00:44:02Had a career year with the Indianapolis Colts last year.
00:44:06Also happens to be Canadian.
00:44:08Canadian born and Jamaican parents.
00:44:10Born in Ottawa.
00:44:11Ottawa, not far from where I grew up.
00:44:13I actually bumped into Neville and we had a little throwback sesh.
00:44:18The Bears have a few Canucks on the team.
00:44:20Ryan Poles and I talked about it recently.
00:44:22And he loves them.
00:44:23They're tough.
00:44:24Theo Benedett obviously is a proud Canadian.
00:44:27Although Western Canada, if I'm not mistaken for Theo.
00:44:29Grew up in British Columbia.
00:44:31There's Watson.
00:44:32He's got some time now.
00:44:33But his check down is low for Concepcion.
00:44:36Not a good throw by Watson.
00:44:38And he'll bring up third down and long.
00:44:45Yeah, it's going to be interesting what Cleveland does.
00:44:47I mean, when you look at Watson, he literally has not played five years.
00:44:50Yeah.
00:44:51You know, and I get it.
00:44:53Monkins probably wants to go with the quarterback that gives him the best chance to win.
00:44:56Sure.
00:44:56They drafted all these young quarterbacks.
00:44:58It just seems like you go the younger route.
00:45:03Cleveland's got a long way to go to improve its offense.
00:45:06Watson was immediately under pressure.
00:45:08He was able to get it to Marshall, who gets hit by Anthony Johnson Jr., shy of the sticks.
00:45:14It's just wild when you think about Deshaun Watson and the contract that he signed when he went to Cleveland.
00:45:25It deserves reminding, I think, as we have kind of chronicled his career.
00:45:30He's got one season left on his current contract.
00:45:32He signed a five-year, $230 million contract, fully guaranteed.
00:45:36All guaranteed.
00:45:37Fully guaranteed.
00:45:38It still is.
00:45:39Back in 2022.
00:45:40It still is the outlier contract.
00:45:42I mean, I remember Steve Pichotti, because they were trying to sign Lamar Jackson.
00:45:45He was upset at how it really just threw everything off with the quarterback margin.
00:45:51And he's only had 19 starts in Cleveland, to Adams' point, because of the back-to-back Achilles injuries.
00:45:57He hasn't played since 2024.
00:46:01Alexander on the return.
00:46:02This is what he did for Ben Johnson and Dan Campbell in Detroit for a handful of games.
00:46:07Not much of a return in a long field in front of Tyson Bajan.
00:46:10And the Bears.
00:46:19Bears preseason football from Chicago is brought to you by Miller Lite.
00:46:25The proud beer partner of your Chicago Bears.
00:46:31So we've seen every angle of this incredible play going back to the playoffs.
00:46:35But this is my favorite video straight from my buddy's phone.
00:46:39This is from Stacey's viewpoint on her phone.
00:46:42The incredible back-pedaling fade-away throw to Cole Comet against the Rams in the divisional round.
00:46:48You know what I thought?
00:46:49Can you throw the hell out of the football?
00:46:51Because my hands are frozen.
00:46:53Can you please throw the ball?
00:46:55For darn sakes.
00:46:56Because that play by Kayla Williams to drop back, what did he do?
00:47:0030 yards, Jim?
00:47:01It was incredible.
00:47:02The ball was in the air for like 40 yards.
00:47:05On what ended up being like a 14-yard official touchdown pass.
00:47:08And to Cole's credit, he told me, I said, where was that ball going?
00:47:14Because he was a great baseball player.
00:47:15And he's going to have such another important role, by the way, in this offense.
00:47:19With all these tight ends.
00:47:21And Ryan Poles, I know, thinks they probably have the best tight end group in the league.
00:47:24They've done a fantastic job.
00:47:26Probably one of the most iconic throws in football.
00:47:28And you had the best seat in the house.
00:47:29You had the best seat for us.
00:47:30Well, he said he was pumping that thing down center field.
00:47:33So, that baby went a distance.
00:47:36Well, he's a former closer at Notre Dame.
00:47:38That was the closer in regulation.
00:47:39I think, you know, it's kind of a franchise-changing throw.
00:47:43That's what it symbolized.
00:47:44On the little out route, that catch is made by Scotty Miller, a new addition.
00:47:48So, there's some speed.
00:47:50Now, a veteran guy who's been around.
00:47:52He's played major playoff games.
00:47:54He was with Pittsburgh the last couple of years.
00:47:56Yeah, he's a world champ when you look at Scotty Miller.
00:47:58You know, obviously spent some time with Tom Brady as well.
00:48:01He mentioned in Pittsburgh, and he's a savvy veteran player.
00:48:04You know, so they're going to have some decisions to make come cup time.
00:48:07Most likely, they're going to keep five guys, but two will be on the practice squad.
00:48:10And I think he, Caden Davis, have made things interesting.
00:48:14Speaking of incredible touchdowns in the playoffs against Green Bay,
00:48:17he had one of those with Tampa Bay.
00:48:21Bajan incomplete.
00:48:23Looking for Alexander.
00:48:24A drop there with a little bit of pressure on the backside as well.
00:48:28But that will bring up second down.
00:48:29Well, you talked to Tom Brady when they had injuries at the wide receiver position.
00:48:33Scotty Miller was his guy.
00:48:35Again, I think a couple in the bread basket, you've got to make that play.
00:48:38Hitching the hands, you've got to squeeze it, make the play, move the chains,
00:48:43and keep the drive going.
00:48:44So, a couple of, you know, focus issues from the receivers that we've seen early
00:48:48and a couple of good things, a couple of bad things.
00:48:50What do you expect in a first preseason game?
00:48:52So, drop issues have to be cleaned up.
00:48:54Bears were in the top portion of the league in drop percentage.
00:48:57That's an elevating catch by Caden Davis.
00:49:00It'll set up third down and medium.
00:49:01Scotty Miller, a cool story, though.
00:49:03I mean, he's from Barrington, Illinois.
00:49:05So, he comes back home.
00:49:06You talk about winning the Super Bowl with Tom Brady.
00:49:08But how about showing up to rookie minicamp to try out?
00:49:11To say, hey, Ryan Poles, I believe I should be here.
00:49:15I'm coming home, and I want a place on this team.
00:49:18And we see that he's been serviceable over the course of his career.
00:49:24So, it's nice to see him get a little action today.
00:49:27Six touchdowns in his career through the air, one on the ground.
00:49:30Bajan looking for Davis.
00:49:32It looked like he got held up, and that will be a flag thrown.
00:49:35We had Nate Evans in coverage for Cleveland.
00:49:39Yeah, you could see the jersey pull on that.
00:49:40Before the pass was thrown, Holding, defense number 43.
00:49:44Five-yard penalty, automatic first down.
00:49:47I think, again, it shows how speed is deceptive.
00:49:50You know, a lot of corners, you know, when you're going one-on-one out there on an island,
00:49:54he's going to decide what release he's going to take.
00:49:57He takes an inside release there.
00:49:58Artie had beaten the DB by a step.
00:50:01So, that's why he's tugging the jersey and holding and draws a flag.
00:50:04The difference between Holding and pass interference.
00:50:06Holding takes place before the pass is thrown.
00:50:09It's only a five-yard penalty, but it is a fresh set of downs.
00:50:11Hence the ball at the 45-yard line.
00:50:14Heavier personnel here for the Bears offense, and they'll run it with Roshon Johnson.
00:50:19The right back to the line of scrimmage.
00:50:22Second down coming up.
00:50:23You can gear up for the 2026 Bears season.
00:50:26Visit store.chicagobears.com for hats, jerseys, memorabilia, and much more.
00:50:3429 days away from the season, starting 36 away from the home opener.
00:50:39Caden Davis sure is getting a lot of action today.
00:50:42Must be a feel-good moment for him coming out of the UFL.
00:50:46Houston Gamblers.
00:50:47Winding road for a guy like Caden Davis.
00:50:53There is Roshon Johnson, not much there.
00:50:56Davis' story, he made his debut with the Browns a couple of years ago as a kick returner,
00:51:00but he was a tight end and linebacker and DB in high school in Kansas.
00:51:05He caught 15 touchdowns as a senior.
00:51:07Should be enough to maybe get you some attention.
00:51:09No star recruit, no D1 offers.
00:51:11He got one offer to be on the track team as a walk-on at Kansas State,
00:51:16so instead goes to a Division II school, Northwest Missouri State, undrafted,
00:51:21goes through the UFL, three different practice squads,
00:51:24finally makes it to Cleveland, gets to the NFL,
00:51:27and now playing with the Bears this year, and is out there for third down and eight.
00:51:31Alexander, that crossing route seemingly is working for him.
00:51:34He picks up the first down to the 45.
00:51:37Not to mention celebrating the Division II connection with his quarterback in Tyson Bateson.
00:51:42Yeah, he's made plays every day during camp.
00:51:44Nice little check down here on the crossing route.
00:51:46Just a little shallow cross.
00:51:48Clears it easy.
00:51:49Looking, you're booking.
00:51:51Hits him in stride.
00:51:52That's good timing.
00:51:54Starting to settle in.
00:51:55You've got to believe what Tyson Bateson is right now.
00:51:58Now they'll switch up the backfield a little bit.
00:52:00Savan Ahmed is in.
00:52:02This is a guy who has been around as well.
00:52:06Hasn't played in a regular season game since November of 2023.
00:52:10That was with the Miami Dolphins.
00:52:11He gets the carry here.
00:52:13A lot of injury issues.
00:52:14He played that game against Las Vegas a few years ago and had a foot injury the last time
00:52:19he played.
00:52:19He had a severe ankle injury in the preseason on a hip drop tackle with the Colts last year.
00:52:24So he missed all that time.
00:52:26But he has some talent.
00:52:28I watched him play in Miami, and Mike McDaniel really liked what he was able to do offensively.
00:52:33Yeah, and he's got an advocate in the room, and that's obviously new running back's coach.
00:52:36Eric Studisville was with him.
00:52:37Very good at catching the ball out of the backfield, and Eric has seen him up close and personal
00:52:41in how he works in practice.
00:52:43So, like I said, he and Roshan are in a battle right now.
00:52:46I really believe that.
00:52:47Nice check down to Sam Roush.
00:52:49That moves the chains.
00:52:50It's a first down.
00:52:51There's Eric Studisville, the new running back.
00:52:52Yeah, you mentioned Eric Studisville.
00:52:54By the way, his first stop, guys, Chicago Bears.
00:52:57Offensive quality control back in the late 90s.
00:53:00For two different Bears coaches.
00:53:02Correct.
00:53:02And you see the bunch-blocking combo package there by the offensive line, and it just opens
00:53:09up just a nice seam in the middle for Sam Roush, who, again, is going to see a lot of
00:53:15action.
00:53:16They love him both in the blocking game and receiving the football, as I've been told,
00:53:21sneaky athletic.
00:53:22I think Eric Studisville is going to add a lot here.
00:53:24I was on that Bears team when we drafted Anthony Thomas, and Eric Studisville was key for Anthony
00:53:29Thomas to get rookie of the year.
00:53:31Boy, that was tough on Bajan as Julian Okwara reached out and grabbed him.
00:53:35It looked more violent with the helmet than it was, but you could tell Bajan was frustrated
00:53:39that he got caught up by Okwara as he beats Amageji.
00:53:44That is close.
00:53:45That's close, but it didn't seem like he had let go.
00:53:49Well, I think it's key is that's Jedrick Wills.
00:53:51Jedrick Wills is in there.
00:53:52That's a 53-game starter at left tackle.
00:53:57Stacey, you've seen him in practice.
00:53:58How healthy is the knee for Jedrick Wills at left tackle?
00:54:01Because he's in the mix here for the Bears.
00:54:03Yeah, it's this ongoing knee issue, right, that he's had since basically 2023, and he's
00:54:09re-injured it several times, had surgery.
00:54:12Getting a shot here, we'll revisit it after the break.
00:54:18Thanks, Adam.
00:54:19Coming up at halftime, we've heard from the players about how Ben Johnson is during practice,
00:54:22but let's hear from him himself.
00:54:24We mic'd him up during training camp, so you'll get to listen as he prepares his team for the
00:54:282026 season.
00:54:29Plus, highlights and stats from the first half, from a competitive game, two minutes left,
00:54:34and it's all coming up at halftime.
00:54:36Great stuff, JB.
00:54:37We'll hear from you then.
00:54:38We'll hear from Ben Johnson, the always entertaining on the mic.
00:54:42Second down and long here.
00:54:44After that, Okwara play dragged Bajin to the deck.
00:54:49So his hard count saw some flinching on the right side.
00:54:52He kills to the second play, which is a pass play.
00:54:56Bajin over the middle.
00:54:57Late throw, he telegraphed it, and it's picked off.
00:55:02Intercepted, an excellent read by Michael Coates, another rookie for this back end.
00:55:08He read it well.
00:55:09The undrafted free agent steps in front for the pick.
00:55:12Well, their new defensive coordinator, Mike Rutenberg, will be pleased with this in Cleveland
00:55:15because one of the emphasis for them has been takeaways.
00:55:18They didn't do it last year, despite having an outstanding defense under Jim Schwartz.
00:55:23Yeah, my only coaching point there is for Carlson, come back to the ball.
00:55:26Don't just wait there.
00:55:27Come back to the ball.
00:55:28Help your quarterback out there a little bit.
00:55:30Allows the DB to undercut it, and they get the turnover.
00:55:33So unfortunate, just trying to get in the field goal range right before the half.
00:55:38Steven Carlson, the intended target.
00:55:41So now a two-minute opportunity with two timeouts for Deshaun Watson in Cleveland.
00:55:46Penalty flag is thrown from the defensive backfield.
00:55:50James Lynch gets to the quarterback.
00:55:53Let's see what that flag is, though, on the back end.
00:55:56Holden, defense number 24.
00:55:59Five-yard penalty, automatic first down.
00:56:01Yeah, so the rookie being thrown into the fire, Malik Muhammad II.
00:56:05It's tagged with that holding penalty, so negate the sack.
00:56:08And now a concern for Austin Barber.
00:56:12Two minutes, charge a team a timeout.
00:56:14Cleveland will be charged with their second timeout of the half.
00:56:16You're inside of two minutes, so an injury timeout charges you with one here.
00:56:20Yeah, here you see Muhammad right here.
00:56:22Yep.
00:56:23In the slot.
00:56:24New position for him.
00:56:25But I'll tell you what, I'm impressed with the Bears, the trio of tackles at the time.
00:56:29James Lynch has been playing outside primarily today.
00:56:32He can be kicked down inside.
00:56:34He comes with a lot of experience.
00:56:35We've talked about Gallimore.
00:56:37We've talked about Kentavious Street.
00:56:39I do think they've got a lot of pieces to the puzzle that Dennis Allen can play with.
00:56:44And that's, to me, where he was masterful last year, where he was moving guys all around, up front, certainly
00:56:50in the secondary.
00:56:51He's had to do it early in camp here.
00:56:53But James Lynch has had a couple of good pass rushes here at the defensive end position.
00:56:59We'll see what the pass rush looks like as the season begins.
00:57:04Obviously, Montez Sweat not playing in this contest.
00:57:07He was their sack leader last year with Ted.
00:57:11Watson under pressure.
00:57:12Again, just a four-man rush forces Watson out of the pocket.
00:57:15And that was forced out of bounds.
00:57:18Lynch providing pressure.
00:57:20And then you saw Nafai Sewell bust over to the sideline to force him out of bounds.
00:57:26I mean, certainly it's going to be more than the front four.
00:57:28Dennis Allen, as the season went long, definitely brought a lot of secondary blitzes.
00:57:32I mean, their game, the playoff game against the Rams, was just masterful.
00:57:36I don't think I saw the same defense twice what Dennis Allen was deploying.
00:57:39But early in this game, they're just bringing four.
00:57:41And they're getting there, and Lynch is providing pressure along with a couple other guys.
00:57:45You saw Hardy early in the game.
00:57:46So, so far, so good.
00:57:49A little twist up front for the Bears this time.
00:57:51Watson was hit as he throws.
00:57:53And that one fluttering incomplete.
00:57:55Jamry Croma brought the pressure.
00:57:57So, they're getting two Watson against, again, some backup offensive linemen without having
00:58:02to bring the extra body.
00:58:03That 27% blitz rate is basically league average for the NFL.
00:58:08Yeah.
00:58:09Well, Kyler Gordon's going to be a big part of it.
00:58:12Dennis Allen believes in rock and roll safety.
00:58:14That's why they drafted Dylan Thienemann.
00:58:16And, of course, why they brought in, you know, Colby Bryant.
00:58:19They want the safeties to rock and roll.
00:58:20They're going to be a big part in blitzing up front.
00:58:23The nickel blitzes are going to be a big part of it.
00:58:25But, 27%, they may play with it a little bit more and get a little bit higher.
00:58:29That's just a drop by Marshall on the check down.
00:58:32It's fourth down.
00:58:32That also stops the clock for the Bears with three timeouts.
00:58:36So, a two-minute drill opportunity for Ben Johnson and the Bears offense.
00:58:42Second straight three and out, forced by the Chicago defense.
00:58:46Well, you know, conversations I have, Dennis Allen is unflinching.
00:58:49And to your point, you say he's the MVP for the Chicago Bears last season.
00:58:54And you have any conversations in the building, he's unflinching.
00:58:57And we spoke with Jack Sanborn coming into this game.
00:58:59He returns to Chicago.
00:59:00And he went directly to Dennis Allen.
00:59:03And one of the messages, defenses, or offenses, excuse me,
00:59:06they're going to tell you a story every time they break the huddle.
00:59:09Well, clearly the Bears are reading the story of Deshaun Watson.
00:59:14Alexander on a 43-yard punt is there with a fair catch.
00:59:17So, long field, but three timeouts for Tyson Bajan and the Bears offense.
00:59:22Calling all junior fans to join the Bears Kids Club brought to you by Jewel Osco.

00:59:35Well, just to put an exclamation point on Dennis Allen,
00:59:38Tom Brady's numbers in the NFC South were the all-time worst against Dennis Allen's defense.
00:59:43And then the playoff game against Matthew Stafford, a veteran quarterback,
00:59:46they got to him eight times in the game.
00:59:48Eight times in the game, Stafford was confused,
00:59:51and I think Dennis Allen is a big part of that.
00:59:56Bajan goes to work, has to dump it down for Savant Ahmed.
01:00:01And he'll pick up about a yard, clocked with 75 ticks to go in this first half.
01:00:08Hurry up, get him organized.
01:00:13Veteran college starter at the Division II level, Tyson Bajan.
01:00:16Now in his fourth year with the Bears.
01:00:19Another check down, it's Ahmed again.
01:00:22Can't get outside, and the clock will continue to move.
01:00:24Nice play by Coates to make the tackle in space.
01:00:27You see Karan Amagaji's back on the left side of the offensive line.
01:00:30I mentioned the Jedrick Wills knee issues.
01:00:34Aesthetically, it hasn't been great.
01:00:36The Bears still think he's got some power and burst.
01:00:38He had a femoral procedure, a surgical procedure, in the year that he took off,
01:00:42which was last season.
01:00:44But they got to see how he gets through the dog days of this thing.
01:00:47And right now, Braxton Jones dealing with some discomfort.
01:00:50You don't see him out there.
01:00:51He would presumably, Jim, be the starter.
01:00:54But right now, Karan Amagaji is the best option.
01:00:56I actually bumped into him before the game.
01:00:58It's all about confidence in his technique and his health.
01:01:02And he feels as healthy as he's been in the NFL.
01:01:04Yeah, he's got one start total.
01:01:06He's got all the measurables you want.
01:01:08He's got all the athleticism in the world.
01:01:10He's just a raw player who hasn't played a lot.
01:01:12Jedrick Wills comes with 53 starts.
01:01:14He was a 10th overall pick by the Browns.
01:01:17You hope that knee gets going.
01:01:18Otherwise, by default, it could be Amagaji.
01:01:22So here is Bajan after the Cleveland timeout.
01:01:25He connects for a first down.
01:01:27Picked up by Maurice Alexander.
01:01:28Alexander again, another crossing crowd for Alexander moves the chains.
01:01:3346 seconds and a timeout used by Cleveland.
01:01:37Maurice Alexander has been all over the place.
01:01:39And it's not unlike what we've seen in training camp.
01:01:42Just a really nice, quick delivery from Tyson Bajan,
01:01:45who, by the way, has been fantastic under pressure today.
01:01:48A couple of his long drives have come under duress.
01:01:51And so those will be positive takeaways for the fourth-year quarterback.
01:01:55He started two for seven.
01:01:57He's now eight for his last nine in terms of completions.
01:02:02So Cleveland uses both timeouts to try to play a little situational football
01:02:07at the end of this first half,
01:02:09going through their processes in these two-minute drills on defense.
01:02:18Bears have two timeouts with which to work now.
01:02:21Bajan, floater, got Caden Davis in midfield.
01:02:23Out of bounds, clock stops.
01:02:26Great read.
01:02:27Cover two, hole shot.
01:02:28Got the corner route to Davis.
01:02:30And it's just a high-low on the corner.
01:02:32It's a cover two, patient.
01:02:33He reads the corner, boom.
01:02:34Drills the corner route to Davis.
01:02:36Nice hitting play.
01:02:38You've got plenty of time here to get yourself a field goal.
01:02:40You love those out routes when you can use the sidelines to save timeouts,
01:02:44especially when you're driving and trying to get points at the end of the clock.
01:02:49And this is where they need to be better.
01:02:51They thrived in the fourth quarter.
01:02:53They need to be better.
01:02:54I think they're only around 27% right before the half in scoring.
01:02:59Bajan is going to take off.
01:03:01Here's some of the athleticism and a smart slide.
01:03:04About a half a minute to go.
01:03:06It's wild.
01:03:07We haven't mentioned Luther Burden, Roma Dunze, Jaday Walker, Kalee Freeman.
01:03:12I mean, all we've talked about is Caden Davis and Maurice Alexander for good reason.
01:03:16But Bears fans are sitting at a bar somewhere in the city of Chicago,
01:03:21and they've got to be thinking, holy cow, our offense is going to be extremely fast.
01:03:27Tyson Bajan runs it exquisitely behind Caleb Williams in the pocket specifically.
01:03:33So we saw that athleticism just come to life there.
01:03:36But we haven't even talked about their stars.
01:03:40They lose D.J. Moore in that trade to Buffalo,
01:03:42but they bring back three of their top four targets.
01:03:45And their leading receiver was a rookie tight end last year who didn't have the hottest start.
01:03:49Colston Loveland got very, very involved as the season went on.
01:03:54Rome was leading the team in receptions until he had the fractured foot,
01:03:57and then that's when Colston Loveland really became a big part of the offense.
01:04:00Luther Burden came on late to show his playmaking ability.
01:04:03They should feel confident.
01:04:04They've got great skill position players where they should feel they should be able to score at will.
01:04:09Bajan's got one-on-one.
01:04:10Back shoulder throw.
01:04:11What a play by Davis.
01:04:13He makes the catch with 28 seconds left.
01:04:17Good touch throw.
01:04:21He talked about processing.
01:04:22Nowhere to go with the football.
01:04:24Once you decide it, it's just about placement.
01:04:26And I think that's a great placement for Tyson Bajan right there.
01:04:29Playing with confidence.
01:04:30You mentioned he's 8 out of 9.
01:04:31What is he, 9 for 10 now?
01:04:32Yep.
01:04:32He's kind of heating up right now with what he's seeing.
01:04:35Good read on the whole shot on the corner route.
01:04:37Now down the sideline versus Mann.
01:04:39Puts him in good position.
01:04:41Like I said, I had the wrong stat.
01:04:42They were 27th in the league three minutes before the half in scoring.
01:04:46They led the league in points in the final three minutes.
01:04:49This is where they need to be better.
01:04:50Right before the half where he can flip the script.
01:04:53And so they should be able to put points on the board here.
01:04:55Still plenty of time.
01:04:56Got plenty of time to put the ball in the end zone or end with field goal.
01:05:00Players use their final timeout.
01:05:02So 28 seconds and the ball is spotted at the 22.
01:05:05So operating here with the shot clock going right now.
01:05:13I love when Ben calls it the shot clock.
01:05:16I know obviously it's the play clock, but it's just the way the mentality of the speed,
01:05:20the basketball on grass type of mentality that Ben Johnson brings.
01:05:23It's always fun to listen to him talk offensive football.
01:05:28Beijing.
01:05:30Got time.
01:05:31Throws into traffic.
01:05:32Boy, that would have been a fabulous catch with one hand by Scotty Milker had he made it.
01:05:38But he got sandwiched by a couple of Cleveland Browns.
01:05:40Yeah, I thought way too late getting to him.
01:05:42He pumps it twice.
01:05:44Yeah, just too late getting to him.
01:05:45Just stick it on him quick.
01:05:46You knew they were already covered down the field.
01:05:49Just put it on him and keep it low.
01:05:50These are the throws you don't want to make.
01:05:52High throws over the middle, equal interceptions.
01:05:54Becomes a tip, interception.
01:05:56So get it down at the belt buckle if you're going to deliver it there and check it out.
01:06:05Logan Jones in its center, the rookie.
01:06:08Backing up here at Bradbury to start the season.
01:06:1320 seconds left.
01:06:15Bajan under pressure.
01:06:16Can't take a sack.
01:06:17The clock is going to continue to move and now the Bears have to hurry.
01:06:21You've got to get back to the line of scrimmage.
01:06:26Four days, Sidnor with a nice play.
01:06:29A big loss.
01:06:33So you're still in field goal range.
01:06:35So you're still in field goal range.
01:06:35A big loss.
01:06:35A big loss.
01:06:35The rules.
01:06:35Yeah.
