00:24:20Final 90 seconds of the first quarter
00:24:23Play action for Kyle Allen
00:24:25Pressure coming
00:24:25Steps up in the pocket
00:24:26But he is taken down
00:24:29Bills have pulled all of their starters out
00:24:32With the exception of Alec Anderson
00:24:33He started at left guard
00:24:35He remains out there
00:24:36But the other four on the offensive line
00:24:38Have all come in off the bench
00:24:40Yeah
00:24:40And they are
00:24:42Plugging in Jude Bowery at left tackles
00:24:45You saw him make that last block on the run
00:24:51Субтитры делал DimaTorzok
00:25:18That's one of the things when you've got a head coach who's also the offensive coordinator even in the preseason
00:25:23you can pull out a play that will work instead of just handing it off or just trying to throw
00:25:29it deep you pull out a play with some nuance and some misdirection and it seems to work so many
00:25:36times in the preseason if you've got a defensive head coach or the head coach doesn't call the plays he
00:25:43will handcuff his offensive coordinator not give him a play like that to use.
00:25:48Could be the final play of the first quarter third down and six.
00:25:53Allen good protection this time working back to his left trying to run it and he takes a high shot
00:26:00the Bills sideline doesn't like that no penalty marker down and that will be the final play of the first
00:26:08quarter.
00:26:09And a good start it was for the Buffalo Bills Josh Allen six of eight 111 yards and the touchdown
00:26:18to Keon Coleman all part of a special day at Highmark Stadium.
00:26:28And now joining us in the booth is Pete Guelli president of business operations for the Bills and Sabres and
00:26:35Pete an instrumental part of this new stadium and Pete we tip our cap because Steve and I have been
00:26:41to every stadium in the NFL and this is second to none.
00:26:44I mean incredibly special day it's just great to see the looks on everybody's faces when they walk in and
00:26:49think about the long road to get here what Terry and Kim committed to make this happen the workers that
00:26:54put the time in here the staff it's really a special special day.
00:26:57Bills are going to go for it on fourth down and three with Kyle Allen in the shotgun looking right
00:27:04throwing and he's got key on Coleman for a first down but be picking up on what you were saying
00:27:10seeing this project through and now having an actual game in the stadium I can only imagine the emotions for
00:27:18you and the Pagoula family and everyone involved with this project a lot of anticipation I was with Terry before
00:27:23the game I was with Kim and her suite earlier I mean
00:27:27literally emotional everybody's really excited about what this means to Buffalo and you know it was a huge investment by
00:27:32everybody public private partnership and to tether the Bills now for 30 more years to Buffalo I don't think you
00:27:38can ask for much more than that.
00:27:39That is not lost on a lot of fans when you talk to the people who came from the rock
00:27:44pile to former Highmark and to the new place knowing that the Bills are going to be here a lot
00:27:51of people outside of Western New York take that for granted but there are always suitors for NFL franchises
00:27:57and it was a real thing that was a conversation when I left the first time Steve and then to
00:28:00come back and have the certainty that the team would be here and have this world-class facility and how
00:28:05great the team has been it's really interesting and it's great to see it through the fans eyes you know
00:28:10we 70% of the people converted from the old building to the new which is obviously a significant number
00:28:14and then talking to guys like you I mean you've been through the old building you've probably held every job
00:28:19you could possibly have at that old building and now you're seeing this for the first time.
00:28:21Well I wasn't I wasn't a CEO but you've done a lot but yeah it you're right for the months
00:28:28and months and for the last few years handful of years it has been all hands on deck for this
00:28:34day.
00:28:35Yeah absolutely has been and I think you know it's a labor of love I mean everybody knew what we
00:28:39were working towards and to see the stadium up now and people walking in from when they see the Bisons
00:28:44to the Highmark Trail to some of the special touches in the building and then to walk in you've got
00:28:47this amazing grass field and apparently our offense likes it.
00:28:50So you know it's everything that we could have expected.
00:28:54How helpful and beneficial was it to have this scrimmage a week ago and now a preseason game and then
00:29:00Tuesday you have an open practice to the fans.
00:29:03How helpful is that in gaining feedback and seeing how everything is playing out inside the stadium?
00:29:07Yeah it's preseason for everybody Andrew and so to have four events in August and honestly kicking it off with
00:29:12a practice which is radically different than a game right completely different flow completely different use of the facility.
00:29:18It was great to have two distinctly different events we got great feedback from the practice we'll get some more
00:29:22feedback from today.
00:29:23We've got another open practice on Tuesday another preseason game and by the time we hit the opener we'll be
00:29:27in a great great spot.
00:29:30Third down and six for Kyle Allen in Buffalo and the pass is caught by Keon Coleman he's going to
00:29:35be short of a first down.
00:29:37One of the things as well and I'm Andrew's not much a part of this as I am because I'm
00:29:42in the building every day we get in our office memos and one of the things you guys were looking
00:29:45for and I was I didn't think about it until
00:29:47I read the email and it was like listen give us the feedback we want to hear what you think
00:29:53about this and some details send us a picture get the whole thing you really do put your arms around
00:29:59the good and the bad you want to hear all of it and you want to make it right you
00:30:04want to get blow out the you know blow out the bugs of a new building right every aspect of
00:30:08it you know whether it's this TV booth and how it functions for national TV whether it's anything on the
00:30:13PR side and the marketing side and the players piece is a huge part of it.
00:30:17Tyler Bass not able to connect on a 44-yard field goal attempt so the lead remains 10-0 Pete
00:30:25hang with us for a sec quick break we'll come right back with more from Highmark Stadium.
00:30:31A very dramatic way to welcome Pete Gwelly back into our booth the voice of Steve Tasker after maybe a
00:30:38cigar or two 10-0 bills in front and Bill Pete we're talking about some of the special touches for
00:30:45the players and how this environment this stadium everything you did for the players is just incredible.
00:30:52I mean really proud that it's a football first facility you could start with the grass field and that that
00:30:57was a conscious decision and it was really important to Terry and Kim that it was a first class experience
00:31:02for the players so the minute they walk in the door pull in the parking lot walk in the door
00:31:06everything they could possibly need are here.
00:31:08People have seen pictures of the locker room it's exceptional the equipment the training facilities everything they do when they
00:31:14walk out of the field it's all about the players they don't need to go over to the training facility
00:31:17anymore they can come right here and be a part of it and start their day and I really think
00:31:21that's a competitive advantage and we're glad that we could provide it for them.
00:31:23And we just showed you one touch that I've never seen before but there's actually a grass cutout for where
00:31:29the field goal kickers can practice on the sideline which is incredible I mean it's simulating the exact same grass
00:31:35that they will have when they walk out onto the field.
00:31:38Yeah I don't think we miss much you know it's a perfect opportunity for T. Bass to get out there
00:31:42and work on what he needs to work on and then inside you know there's a turf field in there
00:31:46that's about 30 or 40 yards and anything they need to do on their field pregame or even at halftime
00:31:50if you have to warm up during inclement weather and you need to great.
00:31:53So every little touch I think we really thought about and again it was through the player lens there was
00:31:57a lot of conversation with the players about what they needed and what they wanted to see and we tried
00:32:00to provide as much of it as we could.
00:32:02You almost duplicated the field house facilities and the player amenities that have been so important to having free agents
00:32:08want to play here the things that are available to them have been transplanted here and duplicated here so you
00:32:14almost have two home fields in the same facility on the same campus and yet man what a game day
00:32:21experience for these guys to come in and play.
00:32:23And intentional process like we said football first players first make sure they have everything they need if it was
00:32:29something that Terry and Kim thought we needed to do we were going to do it and there were tweaks
00:32:32along the way you know everything's not perfect like I said just preseason for everybody you kind of come in
00:32:36even with the players and find out what's working and what's not working and we've got some time to make
00:32:40those adjustments but so far the feedback from the players and the coaches has been incredible.
00:32:44One thing that's really startling for a lot of people and we've been doing a radio daily radio show from
00:32:51the store on Abbott one of the startling things when people come back for the first time in a few
00:32:55months to see former Highmark gone what it's hard for some people they get they get a little choked up
00:33:02because there's so much that went into that what are the plans for that land what's going to happen over
00:33:06there are they going to just do it like they've done other stadiums
00:33:08and make more room for space for fans and parking and tailgating well first of all we know it's emotional
00:33:14and for people like you Steve right who have great memories right memories of that old building
00:33:20people people want to know what's going on and you know we're way ahead of schedule as far as taking
00:33:24it down we have some preliminary thoughts on what we want it to be but ultimately we want this property
00:33:29to be a destination we're already seeing it people come to the Bisons and the Highmark Trail when the stadium's
00:33:34not even open and they're starting to experience that all we have is that in a store so if we
00:33:37can add some things over there we're pretty confident this can be a destination that people want to come to
00:33:41during the offseason so we've been around we've been to Green Bay we've been to another a number of other
00:33:45property we're starting to put some ideas together on what it could be long term.
00:33:48I can I can vouch for that people are showing up here they just want to stand here and look
00:33:52at the place and the Bisons are are unbelievable addition.
00:33:56Deion Walker with the sack Carolina punting it is Hardman calling for a fair catch and Pete thank you so
00:34:02much for coming up here it's great seeing you congratulations this place looks incredible thanks guys appreciate it thanks for
00:34:07making this booth so nice too you got first class all around we're back in a moment.
00:34:17TJ Parker is in our Pepsi rookie spotlight the second rounder from Clemson and Steve you've been in every training
00:34:26camp practice what have you seen from Parker so far?
00:34:29I think he's going to be a huge contributor I like where he's at he came in and he was
00:34:33a little more polished than some of the other draft guys that were up at the top of this draft
00:34:38there were a lot of edge rushers out there.
00:34:40I thought Parker was a little more polished coming out although you can see point to some other guys say
00:34:45well this guy's a little faster this guy's a little stronger taller or whatever TJ Parker seemed to have a
00:34:50more complete package coming out I'm excited to see him play.
00:34:53Pepsi rookie spotlight brought to you by Pepsi the official soft drink of the Buffalo Bills.
00:34:59First down and 10 for Kyle Allen looking deep hit as he throws incomplete.
00:35:09And we take a look at the first five picks that were made by Brandon Bean the general manager and
00:35:15his staff and Steve you could make a case that all five are going to be contributors.
00:35:20Yeah he could particularly even the second fourth rounder in Caleb Elarm Zorna he benefited a little bit from the
00:35:26injury to the linebacking cores but he's been on the field a lot.
00:35:32Jalen Kilgore has flashed as an athlete and has done really well.
00:35:37I have liked what I've seen from Toriano Pride a very twitchy athlete at corner.
00:35:42A lot of optimism about these young guys on the defensive side of the ball in particular.
00:35:46So Bowery at left tackle as it's a give to Frank Gore Jr.
00:35:53Physical run out to the 20.
00:36:00Yeah this turns out a really nice run it's going to be about a nine yard gain.
00:36:05And watch as Gore is going to take this and you'll see him weave his way up through there and
00:36:10gets every yard coming to him.
00:36:14So nice finish to that run well blocked up front as well.
00:36:18There was a holding call after first down so now second and 12 for the Bills.
00:36:24Hardman goes in motion.
00:36:33Allen running right looking downfield and he's got a man and the catch is made by Kalecki Latu.
00:36:41The first year tight end who appeared in five games a season ago with the Bills spending most of it
00:36:46on the practice squad.
00:36:47And that's this is exactly what Latu does extremely well.
00:36:52The really good pass catching tight end.
00:36:55Not as physical down in the line for the running plays as you would like him to be.
00:37:00But he's a very tall very lean long athlete who can get open.
00:37:06First and ten for Buffalo with nine minutes to go in the first half.
00:37:13Allen firing and it is caught.
00:37:16Trent Shurfield on the reception and runs out of bounds close to a first down.
00:37:21Shurfield now in his second stint with the Bills.
00:37:24Also played for Buffalo in 2023.
00:37:27I have liked what I've seen from Shurfield.
00:37:29He's built like a pro receiver.
00:37:32He's got some physical gifts.
00:37:34And if he can put it together in every aspect of his game,
00:37:37that's a guy that could make this roster and contribute.
00:37:42Gain of eight on first down.
00:37:44Second and two.
00:37:48Shurfield goes in motion.
00:37:50Give to Gore.
00:37:52And Frank Gore Jr. has enough for a first down.
00:37:55I thought it was interesting talking with Joe Brady yesterday, Steve.
00:37:58He said, look, obviously our run game had a lot of success last year.
00:38:02Number one rushing offense in terms of rush yards per game.
00:38:05But he said we have to evolve a lot more in our run game this season.
00:38:10We can't just copy the playbook from a year ago because opponents are going to have some of the answers
00:38:15now.
00:38:16He's like, you're not going to see how we're going to grow it in the preseason.
00:38:19They want to keep that a secret until week one.
00:38:22But it'll be interesting to see what types of new runs Brady plans for the regular season.
00:38:28Your offense should look like what your best players do well.
00:38:31And they have yet to find that out and what it might be.
00:38:34Steven Gosnell on the reception wearing Steve's old 89 jersey.
00:38:39And a gain of 18.
00:38:41Very nice throw.
00:38:43Kyle Allen finding his rhythm here.
00:38:45Has a chance.
00:38:46It's well protected up front.
00:38:47Watch he hits.
00:38:48Hits that back step.
00:38:50And man, that ball is gone.
00:38:51Great job on both ends of that pass.
00:38:54Talking about the Bills rushing attack but also on defense.
00:38:57That is certainly a big focus.
00:38:59And it was hit hard yesterday in our meetings with Joe Brady and Brandon Bean.
00:39:03They said, we will stop the run.
00:39:06Nothing else matters until we can stop the run.
00:39:09Something they have to get better at this year compared to a season ago.
00:39:13As Gore is hit with a penalty marker down.
00:39:16Yeah, both sides of the field.
00:39:17That's an illegal shift.
00:39:19They had two guys in motion perhaps before the snap.
00:39:27Illegal shift.
00:39:29Offense, number 89.
00:39:30Moving to that snap.
00:39:31Sat prior to the snap.
00:39:32Five yards.
00:39:33And call it on Steven Gosnell.
00:39:40Listen, this is where it gets a little bit difficult on both sides of the ball.
00:39:45Offense and defense.
00:39:46As you get guys, you'll have guys running plays in the preseason.
00:39:49Both offense and defense.
00:39:50Young players who probably have never run the play.
00:39:53They've only seen other guys run it because they run so many plays in practice.
00:39:59They don't get a turn to run every play.
00:40:01And that's the test.
00:40:03Allen takes the check down.
00:40:05He's got a wide open Davis who stretches out to the 33-yard line.
00:40:10Dante Pettis was running deep down the field.
00:40:12But Allen goes underneath to Davis.
00:40:15Yeah, they dropped out and gave up the short pass.
00:40:18Looked like they were almost daring him to take the easy completion.
00:40:21And Allen was smart enough to do it.
00:40:23You'll see.
00:40:23They just absolutely.
00:40:25And they left him.
00:40:26Oh, there's the Pettis was gone.
00:40:30And Kyle Allen, he was trying to draw the defense away from the receiver and didn't look at the receiver
00:40:36to see how open he was.
00:40:39Here's Davis up the middle inside the 30.
00:40:41Nice running by Davis who picks up the first down.
00:40:44Oh, this is well blocked up front.
00:40:4612-yard pickup for Davis.
00:40:49Really, really well blocked up front.
00:40:51Watch this offensive line.
00:40:52They're going to come around here.
00:40:54And right up inside, left tackle Jude Bowery getting along, getting around there.
00:40:59Bowery has shown some real athleticism, as big a guy as he is.
00:41:03And that's been, I think, a surprise for a lot of people.
00:41:09Five and a half to go in the first.
00:41:16Allen to Shurfield.
00:41:19And a short pickup on the play for Trent Shurfield, who bounced around a bit last year, spending time with
00:41:25the Broncos, Cardinals, and Patriots.
00:41:28He totaled three receptions.
00:41:30But some familiarity coming back here to Buffalo and trying to get in that mix to be maybe the fifth
00:41:36or sixth wide receiver.
00:41:38Everything about the roster and who they signed and when they signed them and guys they had brought back.
00:41:43You've mentioned a few.
00:41:44I mean, Kyle Allen as well as Shurfield.
00:41:45It is always held up to the prism of the new head coach.
00:41:50And some of the guys he brings back, he might have liked the first time around and didn't have enough
00:41:54of a voice to have them stick here.
00:41:56It's always interesting to watch, particularly a regime change of the way they've had it in Buffalo.
00:42:03It's not a wholesale change.
00:42:05It's just tweaks.
00:42:06And the differences are hard to find.
00:42:08And sometimes you get clues.
00:42:09And the guys they bring back that they've had before are sometimes breadcrumbs as to where they're headed in the
00:42:15future.
00:42:17Kyle Allen is 10 of 11 since coming on for Josh Allen.
00:42:21And right now looking at a third down and nine.
00:42:26Frank Gore Jr.
00:42:27Next to Allen, who's in the shotgun.
00:42:32Allen pressure coming and he is sacked.
00:42:35So the Panthers coming with some heat in the backfield and Tyler Bass will come out to attempt another field
00:42:42goal.
00:42:42Yeah, they got steamrolled right up front.
00:42:46Chase Lunt.
00:42:49Boy, that was a jailbreak.
00:42:51Kyle Allen is going to look sideways at his offensive lineman on that one.
00:42:55And that was just guys that just couldn't get anchored and get in front of the pursuit of the Panthers.
00:43:00And Kyle Allen paid the price.
00:43:03Once again, it's Tommy Doman holding for Bass, who's one for two on his field goal attempts.
00:43:10This from 46 yards away.
00:43:15Missed earlier from 44.
00:43:17And this one is good.
00:43:21So Bass comes right back and knocks it through.
00:43:25And the Bills increase their lead.
00:43:27It's 13-0 Buffalo.
00:43:29Bills are in the building today at Highmark Stadium on a gorgeous August afternoon.
00:43:36Getting a glimpse of the new digs.
00:43:39And it is special.
00:43:40As Buffalo has taken a 13-0 lead on Carolina.
00:43:46Steve, coming in with you early this morning, we took the ride from the Bills facility on a golf cart
00:43:53across the street.
00:43:54Goosebumps just seeing this new place come to fruition.
00:43:58It really is moving for most people who live here, grow up here.
00:44:04This whole campus is a part of their heritage.
00:44:06And to come in and see it transformed in the way that it has been transformed is very moving.
00:44:14They've got a new stadium.
00:44:15They've got the youngest head coach in the National Football League in Joe Brady.
00:44:20And there's a lot of optimism here.
00:44:22Certainly the expectations are high.
00:44:24Joe Brady walks into a building that has had great success in recent history.
00:44:30Although not the ultimate prize.
00:44:32And that really is what this team is after.
00:44:38Bass with the kickoff for Buffalo.
00:44:41And Carolina, which has barely had the ball in this first half, will take over with 3.15 to go.
00:44:49There is a flag down on the kickoff.
00:44:53We had had conversations about what Joe Brady would do between series.
00:44:56Who would he talk to?
00:44:57During the return, holding, receiving team Brady with a 10-yard penalty from the spot of foul.
00:45:03He's got some learning to do to get his game day rituals and what he's going to do.
00:45:11It's going to be interesting to watch him.
00:45:13Let's check in with Maddie.
00:45:14In a 1.3 million square foot stadium, it's hard to feel a sense of togetherness, but the Bills managed
00:45:20to do that.
00:45:21Every inch of high mark feels like Buffalo.
00:45:24The inspiration for the locker room design came from seeing a picture of hands together.
00:45:28Every locker stall connects, and it represents unity.
00:45:31You see that in so many different places throughout the stadium.
00:45:35You sure do, Maddie.
00:45:37As Kenny Pickett takes over at quarterback for Carolina.
00:45:42Pickett in his first season with the Panthers, replacing Bryce Young.
00:45:46But to your point, Steve, a new rule came out this week in which the NFL is going to allow
00:45:52head coaches to delegate,
00:45:54if they choose, an assistant coach to throw the red challenge flag.
00:45:59And we asked Joe Brady about that yesterday.
00:46:01Hey, with you calling the plays on offense, might that interest you to have someone else handle that?
00:46:06He said, no, absolutely not.
00:46:08I'm the head coach.
00:46:09I want to be held accountable.
00:46:10I'm going to throw the flag.
00:46:12So, yes, he's the offensive coordinator from the past, calling the plays still as the head coach.
00:46:17But he has made it very clear that he is the head coach.
00:46:22Yeah, and he has made that.
00:46:23That's been part of his messaging, as you talked about earlier in the broadcast, about, listen, this is a new
00:46:28deal.
00:46:28You guys haven't been through this training camp with me.
00:46:31Even the guys who have been around here, this is going to be all new.
00:46:34And some of it has been.
00:46:36Some of it is similar, as you would think.
00:46:38But, man, oh, man, Joe Brady is going to be his own head coach.
00:46:42And even though that rule change, I think he's, he wants to, he got the feeling, he wants to throw
00:46:48that flag once, right?
00:46:49I mean, two-minute warning here in Buffalo.
00:46:54It'll be third down for Carolina when we come to our player profile.
00:46:58Brought to you by Wegmans.
00:47:00And we mentioned the battle at left guard between Austin Corbett and Alec Anderson.
00:47:04Both seeing time in this first half.
00:47:06And as we mentioned, Brandon Bean telling us no separation yet.
00:47:10A game like this, the joint practice with the Browns coming up on Thursday.
00:47:15Those will be big opportunities for these two.
00:47:18Yeah, and of course, the Bills offense has gotten a ton of snaps in this first half.
00:47:23They've had the ball for 20 minutes and 55 seconds.
00:47:26The Panthers only 7 minutes and 5 seconds.
00:47:30Goodness gracious.
00:47:31Wegmans enjoy delicious, freshly prepared meals and catering with Meals to Go.
00:47:35Download the app or visit MealsToGo.com to order.
00:47:38On third down, Pickett steps up.
00:47:42Looking to take off, and Buffalo is there.
00:47:45Javon Solomon with a crushing hit.
00:47:48T.J. Parker also in on the action for Buffalo.
00:47:51But a flag does come out.
00:47:54I don't know what the flag could be.
00:47:56He's outside the pocket.
00:47:57Maybe it was down the field.
00:47:59It's right there where the quarterback went down.
00:48:06I thought it was a clean hit.
00:48:12Oh, face mask.
00:48:14There you go.
00:48:15The Panthers offense stayed out there.
00:48:17And that'll be an automatic first down for Carolina.
00:48:22Yeah, Pickett.
00:48:23He's going to do the unthinkable.
00:48:26He's going to roll out, which is fine.
00:48:27He's got to get rid of the football.
00:48:28But he starts to cut back inside.
00:48:30Big mistake.
00:48:33And it looked like Javon Solomon got his hand up on the mask of Pickett, is what they called.
00:48:41And Pickett's helmet came right off.
00:48:43And that's where the flag came in.
00:48:44And this will be a better angle here.
00:48:47This is just...
00:48:51Oh, there it is.
00:48:52It's not...
00:48:53It's not...
00:48:54Yeah.
00:48:54It was Gino Stone who came in with the late face mask.
00:49:02That's just as unfortunate.
00:49:04It looked like he just got caught up.
00:49:05Didn't look intentional.
00:49:07But man, oh man.
00:49:11That's a bad decision by Pickett.
00:49:13You got to go down, bro.
00:49:17I felt that hit up here.
00:49:19Yeah, Solomon, who's someone Brandon Bean highlighted yesterday, saying that the switch to the 3-4 is a really good
00:49:25fit for Solomon.
00:49:26And he's had a good training camp.
00:49:27He had the big punishing hit right there before the penalty on Stone.
00:49:32As Carolina takes it out to the 40-yard line, running clock 145 to go.
00:49:37Yeah, we spoke about the draft picks and young TJ Parker in there along with Landon Jackson.
00:49:44These young players getting a chance to get a lot of snaps in here late in this first half.
00:49:51Pickett with a first down completion to Jimmy Horn Jr.
00:49:55Coming up at the half, we've got Josh Allen mic'd up, plus an exclusive look at the construction of Highmark
00:50:01Stadium from the Emmy Award winning series built for Buffalo.
00:50:04It's all brought to you by Seneca Resorts and Casinos, the official casino of the Buffalo Bills.
00:50:09And we have another penalty flag down on the deep pass attempts.
00:50:14We've got a pass interference coming down the sidelines here by the near judge.
00:50:17He threw it from behind the players.
00:50:21Now they're talking it over.
00:50:24It's going to be pass interference.
00:50:27Pass interference.
00:50:28Defense.
00:50:29Number 32.
00:50:30Ball replaced.
00:50:31Defiled foul.
00:50:32Automatic first down.
00:50:35That was Toriano Pride in coverage for Buffalo, the seventh-round pick out of Missouri.
00:50:43I might have to agree with that call.
00:50:47Played his first two seasons at Clemson before his final two with Missouri, a St. Louis native.
00:50:54One other thing about this defense, I've been talking about the draft picks and how many young players are going
00:50:58to be looked to to contribute.
00:51:01You're going to put up with some mistakes, but you're also going to get some superlative plays because of their
00:51:05speed and athleticism that their youth brings.
00:51:08Pickett swings it to Trevor A. Chan, and he picks up a first down for Carolina.
00:51:14And Carolina, as happens sometimes, you get into a hurry-up offense and sometimes you just click a little better.
00:51:21Less thinking, more reacting, a little bit more aggressive, and it helps your offense find a rhythm.
00:51:27They run it again, but Dwayne Carter was able to get in the backfield for Buffalo coming off a season
00:51:35that he did not play at all because of the torn Achilles he suffered prior to week one.
00:51:40And a timeout is called.
00:51:45And it's a Bills timeout with 59 seconds to go in the first half.
00:51:49Really, from a Buffalo perspective, the only thing you don't like in this first half, the penalties, five for 60
00:51:55yards.
00:51:56Yeah.
00:51:56And, you know, you've got the interference call.
00:51:58You've got a pre-snap penalty on your number one offense.
00:52:02That's not good.
00:52:04But the aggression penalties, you can kind of live with.
00:52:07Even the pass interference, as, you know, as helpful as it was to the Carolina Panthers, it's an aggressive penalty.
00:52:13And even those are a little bit easier to take than the pre-snap stuff.
00:52:18And, you know, even the face mask penalty that kept the drive alive, it was an aggressive, really good play
00:52:23defensively that you just, you know, your hand got in the wrong spot.
00:52:26So, even some of the penalties were of the kind that it's like, well, if you're going to get a
00:52:32penalty, get one where you're being aggressive.
00:52:38Second down and nine.
00:52:39Can he pick it in the shotgun?
00:52:44Pickett, again, looking to run inside the five.
00:52:47And Pickett tackled from behind by Dorian Williams.
00:52:51But Pickett gets enough for a first down.
00:52:54It's a good job there by Pickett.
00:52:56And the offensive line did a nice job running the pass rush past him.
00:53:00He took the opportunity, almost got in.
00:53:03And with the quick snap now, this is where the defense is vulnerable.
00:53:07High snap.
00:53:09And Pickett, not with a good exchange to Trevor H.
00:53:13And Jordan Hancock was able to blow that one up for Buffalo.
00:53:16That was a great play.
00:53:17Jim Leonard brought heat.
00:53:19He brought it right off both corners.
00:53:21Brought the extra rushes.
00:53:23Three guys come through untouched.
00:53:25That play was blown up.
00:53:27Great call by the defensive coordinator.
00:53:30Hancock played in 13 games during his rookie year a season ago.
00:53:34Had that pass break up on the final play of the game in the win against the Chiefs.
00:53:43And certainly the secondary is an area, Steve, where there are still some things to be determined when you think
00:53:49about the final roster coming at the end of the month.
00:53:51But particularly with a number of guys not practicing or playing, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Cole Bishop, Max Hairston, we
00:53:59mentioned at the top of the show, while it is nice for the young players to get some reps, in
00:54:06a new defense, you need your veterans to get reps as well.
00:54:10Second and goal.
00:54:11Second and goal.
00:54:12Pickett to the end zone, and it is caught for a touchdown.
00:54:15So Carolina is on the board.
00:54:18Just seem read with his second touchdown of the preseason.
00:54:23He also had one in the Hall of Fame game against the Cardinals.
00:54:28Right out here.
00:54:29He's going to hit it.
00:54:31And this is a dart.
00:54:32You've got to throw it right on the receiver's body.
00:54:34Quarterback does a nice job.
00:54:36Tough to defend it when it's thrown accurately.
00:54:38The guy's got body position.
00:54:40And it just sticks to his chest, and it's a touchdown.
00:54:47With 31 seconds to go until halftime.
00:54:50So Ryan Fitzgerald comes out for the extra point for the Panthers.
00:54:59And that kick is good.
00:55:03For a Carolina team that won the NFC South a year ago, their first playoff appearance since 2017.
00:55:11Let's check in with Maddie.
00:55:13Speaking of the rookie class, rookie outside linebacker TJ Parker had the trip of a lifetime this offseason
00:55:18when he was invited to train with veteran teammate, nine-year veteran Bradley Chubb.
00:55:24Parker said that Chubb taught him so much, knowledge about the game, where his eyes should be pre-snap,
00:55:29and how the game can slow down so he can play fast.
00:55:32And Chubb said, no, I didn't do too much.
00:55:34I just instilled confidence in an eager rookie, just reminding him to have the right mindset.
00:55:39This is a fun game.
00:55:40Go out there and play like a kid.
00:55:42Now, Parker said the most important thing he learned was to not let the moment be too big.
00:55:48Parker's been in Chubb's hip pocket throughout the entirety of training camp.
00:55:52You watch those two after practice, and they're standing together on the field for a long time,
00:55:56going through what happened and how they can be better.
00:55:59Standing together right now, Maddie.
00:56:02Still talking Chubb and Parker, and so important to have a veteran like Chubb.
00:56:07You remember Von Miller being such a mentor during his time here with the Bills.
00:56:11And Von Miller also was in Denver with Chubb in his early career and mentored him there as well.
00:56:16So, Chubb paying it forward like it was done for him.
00:56:21This is Pettis on the return for the Bills out of his own end zone.
00:56:27Dante Pettis.
00:56:29And the ball comes out.
00:56:32And it looks like Buffalo has recovered with 23 seconds to go until halftime.
00:56:39And it is Buffalo football.
00:56:41Let's take another look as Pettis taking out of his own end zone.
00:56:46He was signed in late July.
00:56:49Trying to make this team, and that's not going to help putting the ball on the ground on a kick
00:56:54return.
00:56:54He got his back, his own fumble.
00:56:57But, yeah.
00:56:59There you have it.
00:57:0010 of 11.
00:57:01Kyle Allen, 76 yards.
00:57:03Josh, 6 of 8.
00:57:05It's a pretty good day for the quarterbacks of the Buffalo Bills.
00:57:08Your last name is Allen.
00:57:10You've had a very good afternoon.
00:57:12And it looks like Buffalo is actually going to try to work this with two timeouts in just 20 seconds
00:57:17on the clock.
00:57:18Davis is spun down inbounds at the 33.
00:57:22And Joe Brady will call timeout.
00:57:24You know, there's things that we talked about with Joe Brady yesterday.
00:57:27He said, look, in a preseason game, I've got to do a little differently.
00:57:31I need to.
00:57:32He's like, I hate punting, but I might have to punt just to see how we can evaluate the punters.
00:57:37And little things like this.
00:57:38You know, normally, maybe in a regular season game, take a knee to go to the locker room.
00:57:42But he wants to practice.
00:57:44Calling a timeout.
00:57:45Getting a play in.
00:57:46These are all things that he had a checklist that he tried to want to accomplish in a preseason game.
00:57:52And strategically might fit differently than a regular season game.
00:57:56Yeah.
00:57:57We were laughing.
00:57:58He said, I might need to punt.
00:57:59He hasn't punted yet.
00:58:01It's interesting that he said that.
00:58:05Kyle Allen with a beautiful pass.
00:58:07Might take a timeout here.
00:58:08Yeah, he takes the quick timeout, 13 seconds left as the Bills come down.
00:58:12They're hurrying.
00:58:13They don't have to.
00:58:14They didn't realize that they called a timeout on the sidelines.
00:58:17This is interesting because they have one timeout remaining.
00:58:22Now that's gone.
00:58:23Now they're out of timeouts.
00:58:25What they need to do now is to get out of bounds, and they may have a chance to give
00:58:30Tyler Bass a chance to kick the field goal.
00:58:32And what they could, another strategy would be go deep on Carolina, hope for pass interference or reception to get
00:58:42out of this half with a chance to get some points on the board.
00:58:44But as of right now, they've got to get at least, well, I don't even want to say, it's got
00:58:51to be 13 yards probably.
00:58:52They've got to get more than the first down to get inside Tyler Bass' field goal range.
00:58:57Steven Gosnell making the catch on that last play.
00:58:59Now Carolina wants to talk things over with 13 seconds on the clock.
00:59:06This is, you know, some people are, listen, this is a preseason, you're rolling your eyes out.
00:59:10But this is exactly the kind of situation the coaches, particularly a first-time head coach like Joe Brady, game
00:59:17management, end of half, end of game, timeout usage, getting the plays in and out.
00:59:23That kind of nuts and bolts that some people take for granted really does need to be repped.
00:59:30And it's crucial for these head coaches to get this in with their staff, particularly on the Bills side as
00:59:36new defensive staff.
00:59:37But same thing for Carolina and their staff.
00:59:39And now there's a penalty.
00:59:41Oh, man.
00:59:43Now it's preseason.
00:59:46Offense, number 62.
00:59:49Five-yard penalty.
00:59:50Remains first down.
00:59:51Clock is stopped.
00:59:52There's no 10-second runoff applied to this foul.
00:59:59Penalty against Buffalo.
01:00:02Cannot get the number.
01:00:04The microphone hasn't been sharp today for the official.
01:00:09Yeah.
01:00:12Need an audio check or something.
01:00:14Something.
01:00:16All right.
01:00:17First and 15 with 13 seconds to go.
01:00:22Allen hit as he throws.
01:00:24Completed to Davis.
01:00:25And a minimal gain on the play as Allen gets back in his feet and is walking gingerly back toward
01:00:32the line of scrimmage.
01:00:34Yeah, he waited as long as he could on this route.
01:00:38And Davis made himself available.
01:00:41Hard rush off the edge by Cam Gill.
01:00:48Gain of one.
01:00:49So second down and nine.
01:00:51Seven seconds.
01:00:51I mean, I think he might want to throw it for the end zone.
01:00:55Oh, my goodness.
01:00:57And Dave Canales just called his final timeout.
01:01:01The Carolina head coach.
01:01:02Third and final timeout of the half.
01:01:04Carolina.
01:01:0530 seconds in the lake.
01:01:07Please just have to get in the block to seven seconds.
01:01:10Kyle Allen now 30 years old.
01:01:13And he was with the Bills in 2023.
01:01:17He appeared in seven games but did not attempt a pass.
01:01:21Played for six NFL teams in his career starting 19 games including 12 with the Panthers there.
01:01:33He's made the rounds and now back in Buffalo.
01:01:39Allen looking sideline incomplete with two seconds on the clock.
01:01:48Yeah, you're down to Hail Mary time right now, right?
01:01:51You're going to try and roll out, get him to the line of scrimmage.
01:01:54And he won up to the front of the end zone maybe if you want to get that into your
01:01:58preseason repertoire.
01:02:01Or just kneel down.
01:02:03I think he might just take a knee.
01:02:07But the Panthers, they're lining up.
01:02:17Quick pass to Hardman.
01:02:19And that is how the first half will end.
01:02:21It was a good day for Josh Allen and the Buffalo starting offense.
01:02:26And Kyle Allen has good numbers as well.
01:02:29It all adds up to a 13-7 Bills lead.
01:02:35Well, the numbers are very skewed in favor of Buffalo.
01:02:40Still only up by six points.
01:02:42But man, oh man.
01:02:4315, 16 first downs to six for the Carolina.
01:02:46It's been a good half for the Bills offense.
01:02:5013-7.
