00:00:007, Buffalo in front on a special day in western New York.
00:00:06Highmark Stadium is open and looks spectacular.
00:00:10Halftime coming up next.
00:00:14Set for the start of the third quarter.
00:00:18And hi again everyone alongside Steve Tasker.
00:00:20I'm Andrew Catalan.
00:00:21We'll hear from Matty Glab in a moment.
00:00:23For the Bills in the first half, that offense led by Josh Allen and DJ Moore.
00:00:28There's a lot to like, Steve.
00:00:29Yeah, combined the quarterbacks were 6 of 8 and 10 of 11.
00:00:34I mean, they really, they were on point.
00:00:36I think Joe Brady helped him with his play calling.
00:00:38I think he wanted to make them look good.
00:00:40Gave him a wider menu than you might see in the preseason offensively.
00:00:45Defensively, they showed some aggression.
00:00:46They had some good pressure on the quarterbacks.
00:00:48Got a few clean hits.
00:00:50Statistically, before that two-minute drill to end the half for the Panthers
00:00:54where they got their touchdown, the Bills absolutely dominated.
00:00:57But the Panthers did show some life at the end of the first.
00:01:00And a moment ago, we had Matty Glab catching up with Joe Brady.
00:01:06Joe, you said you wanted players to lock in and play to their strengths
00:01:09rather than focusing on the playbook today.
00:01:11How are you seeing that in the first half?
00:01:13Yeah, look, I mean, obviously it's an incredible environment.
00:01:15I felt early that didn't impact our guys.
00:01:17Like, I thought the focus was where it needed to be.
00:01:19Liked how our offense and defense came out to start.
00:01:21Didn't like how we finished that first half right there.
00:01:22Josh Allen led a touchdown drive.
00:01:24What did you like about the focus and the starters being on the field?
00:01:27Yeah, look, the discipline to be able to sustain the drives.
00:01:30I'd much rather us finish both those drives with a touchdown.
00:01:33But I liked how the guys came out with the focus, and it was good to see.
00:01:36Thanks, Joe.
00:01:37I appreciate you.
00:01:38All right, Matty, thank you very much.
00:01:40A look at the first half numbers dominated by Buffalo.
00:01:44Statistically, 278 yards to just 60 for Carolina.
00:01:47Panthers only had 21 yards before that final drive that culminated in a Kenny Pickett touchdown pass.
00:01:56Panthers will get the football to begin this second half.
00:01:59It is Tyler Bass, who is 2 of 3 on his field goal attempts in the first half, kicking off
00:02:04for Buffalo.
00:02:07Special teams, certainly a way to make the roster.
00:02:11And Bills will be keeping a close eye on that throughout these three preseason games.
00:02:16And they continue to tweak the rules a little bit.
00:02:19The kickoff return team is now allowed to only have five guys up on the front line instead of six.
00:02:25That small tweak may make a difference in the success of the return.
00:02:31And we'll see how, if it doesn't have, you know, you're talking statistical differences here.
00:02:36I don't know that you'll see more touchdowns one way or the other, but they did it for a reason.
00:02:41It'll be interesting to see the results.
00:02:42But those are small tweaks they make every year.
00:02:48Kenny Pickett remains the Carolina QB.
00:02:57And on first down, Pickett looking to throw, has time, and locates the running back, who's dragged down by Javon
00:03:04Solomon.
00:03:05Again, Brandon Bean talking very highly of Solomon, the third-year linebacker out of Troy,
00:03:11feeling that that 3-4 scheme really fits his skill set.
00:03:15He's built for it.
00:03:16He's got long limbs, big hands.
00:03:19He's able to keep his distance from offensive tackles.
00:03:23And being three feet further away from the football, three or four feet further as a stand-up edge rusher,
00:03:29really plays into his strengths of speed, quickness, and his ability to move laterally.
00:03:34Trying to add his name to the list of great Troy pass rushers we've seen over the years in the
00:03:39NFL.
00:03:40Pickett spinning out of trouble.
00:03:42He'll run it again, and he slides down very close to the line to gain.
00:03:47They're going to make him just short, I think.
00:03:49It's going to be a third and very short.
00:03:51But once again, Pickett getting flushed right up between the two defensive tackles.
00:04:00I don't know.
00:04:01They might have given him a short spot on that, but nevertheless, it's third and short.
00:04:06That's where he starts his slide, so just short.
00:04:10And now the Bills defense looking for a stop on third down.
00:04:14Pickett throwing, and it is a first down.
00:04:18It was Caleb Elarm's oar coming over to make the tackle for Buffalo.
00:04:23And we had a chance to talk with Brandon Bean about Elarm's oar yesterday.
00:04:28He said his seriousness and preparation has exceeded our expectations.
00:04:33And the one thing Bean told us that he did not realize about Elarm's oar until he arrived here in
00:04:39Buffalo
00:04:39is that he has a mean streak as well.
00:04:41Yeah, and they're not all that bad with that, right?
00:04:44They want some grit on their defense.
00:04:47We heard what Jim Leonard, the type of defensive philosophy he wanted to instill
00:04:53and the atmosphere they wanted to create.
00:04:56And that starts with having the right kind of player.
00:04:58And Elarm's oar has really shown in this camp to be exactly that type of guy.
00:05:05Maddie can add some more on the fourth-round pick out of TCU.
00:05:08Head coach Joe Brady said,
00:05:10I can't even get Caleb Elarm's oar to smile.
00:05:12When he was on a pre-draft visit, he just looked mad the entire time.
00:05:16But I actually love that.
00:05:18You talk to Caleb Elarm's oar, he is all about ball all the time.
00:05:22He wants to lead the defense.
00:05:23He wants to be the best version of himself that he can be.
00:05:26And defensive coordinator Jim Leonard is already impressed by the way he's been leading so far.
00:05:31Yeah, he is all business there.
00:05:34As that is Keontae Jenkins coming over to finish off a tackle.
00:05:39Another guy that showed a lot last summer ended up being on the Buffalo practice squad,
00:05:44appeared in three games, but certainly saw some flashes from Jenkins last year in the preseason.
00:05:50Yeah, they've got a lot of high hopes.
00:05:52And unlike other years, this is a team that really seems committed to being more youthful
00:05:58on the defensive side of the ball.
00:06:00That is a stark contrast to where they've been the last handful of years.
00:06:05Second down and eight.
00:06:07Pickett quick release.
00:06:09And he's got HN.
00:06:10And he is tackled right at midfield.
00:06:14Igbenosin in on that tackle.
00:06:15The second-round pick out of Ohio State.
00:06:19You know, this Carolina team coming out and doing a nice job in this early in the second half
00:06:26of getting the ball out of the quarterback's hands a little bit faster.
00:06:34Got a play stoppage now.
00:06:38And they are, yeah, and there's your video aid assisted.
00:06:42They gave him the first down after that last play.
00:06:44They had marked them short and video assisted to get the first down.
00:06:49And now they'll start the play clock.
00:06:59And Kenny Pickett ran over to the sideline, got some water,
00:07:02and now coming back into the Carolina huddle.
00:07:04Pickett on his fourth team in four years.
00:07:09And that does not include his time that he spent with the Browns last year
00:07:13before he was traded last summer to Las Vegas.
00:07:18First down and ten for Carolina.
00:07:27Solomon coming with pressure.
00:07:29And Pickett is in trouble.
00:07:31And down he goes.
00:07:32Solomon came from one side.
00:07:34And then at the other side, it was T.J. Parker applying the heat.
00:07:38T.J. Parker's going to end up getting the sack.
00:07:41But you're right.
00:07:41They pinched in the pocket at the top and didn't give Pickett a chance to step up into it.
00:07:48It was a lackadaisical play-action fake.
00:07:52Nobody bought it.
00:07:53It was a straight four-man rush, not the 3-4 that we've been talking so much about.
00:07:58This is, once again, now here in the second half, it's a straight four-man front.
00:08:02And the Bills getting a little bit of success up there.
00:08:05Parker finished his career with 21 and a half sacks.
00:08:08Tenth in Clemson history.
00:08:10Pickett's pass is caught at midfield.
00:08:12And immediately making that tackle is Jordan Hancock.
00:08:15A couple of times, Hancock has flashed defensively for Buffalo today.
00:08:20That Bills making some changes now.
00:08:22Parker and Solomon come off the field.
00:08:26Jones comes on the field.
00:08:30As well as Landon Jackson.
00:08:35Carolina, one for five on third down.
00:08:38Buffalo's done a good job in that department, trying to keep it that way on third down and 11.
00:08:49Pickett, quick pass, and a quick tackle made by Toriano Pride.
00:08:53So, the seventh rounder from Missouri makes it fourth down for Carolina.
00:09:00And they're going to keep the offense out on the field.
00:09:10It will be interesting play called.
00:09:12The Panthers spread them out five wide.
00:09:15Last play.
00:09:15Now they go four wide with a running back.
00:09:28Pickett to the outside.
00:09:30He's got an open man and a first down.
00:09:33James Mitchell on the catch.
00:09:35The fourth-year tight end out of Virginia Tech.
00:09:37And the drive continues for Carolina.
00:09:39Sam Franklin late to get over there as they motioned across the formation.
00:09:43And it just took them just a half a beat to realize that they were trying to do.
00:09:51And Franklin got there just a half a step late.
00:09:56Just beautiful views from here at Highmark Stadium on a gorgeous summer afternoon.
00:10:02Sun is shining bright on this grass field.
00:10:07And a nice tackle made there on the ground.
00:10:10That is Hancock again.
00:10:11Again, yeah.
00:10:14You know, it's...
00:10:15I'm not making any presumptions about Hancock, but he's having a really nice game today.
00:10:20And this is the kind of player and play where when you get a guy who has a new set
00:10:27of eyes on him,
00:10:28a new defensive staff who give him a different message and a little bit of a different assignment,
00:10:32some guys flourish.
00:10:34This is the kind of thing you look for when your coaching staff changes over.
00:10:38Some guys, it's the best thing that ever happened to them.
00:10:41And, of course, their Hancock's playing well today.
00:10:45Second down, picket looking deep, and it's incomplete.
00:10:50Sam Franklin had the coverage for Buffalo.
00:10:55Good coverage.
00:10:57This grass field, just spectacular.
00:11:00Kentucky bluegrass cultivated at Tuckahoe Farms in New Jersey.
00:11:05One of 16 NFL venues without artificial turf.
00:11:09Spencer Brown had my favorite quote of the summer saying he would sleep.
00:11:14On this grass, if he could.
00:11:16Yeah.
00:11:16It really feels good to go out and walk on it.
00:11:20It's just a really smooth, fast track.
00:11:23And, of course, it should be.
00:11:24It's pristine.
00:11:25It's never been really trampled on the ground.
00:11:27The crew here guards this like it's sacred.
00:11:31As they should.
00:11:32And a false start on the Panthers.
00:11:42Well, it looks spectacular, but also the drainage, the heating.
00:11:46There's so many more elements of this stadium.
00:11:48It's not just dirt with grass growing on.
00:11:50I mean, there's a lot of technology embedded in the dirt.
00:11:53And they should be able to keep it healthy and thick and lush all the way through, hopefully,
00:12:01February when the playoffs end.
00:12:03And the two teams from the AFC, NFC, head to L.A. for the Super Bowl.
00:12:11Third down and 19.
00:12:14Pick it over the middle and it's incomplete.
00:12:17And a late flag comes in.
00:12:22And it's going to be pass interference against Buffalo.
00:12:29This came from right where the play happened at the ball.
00:12:33Let's see who they're going to call it on.
00:12:39That was.
00:12:41That was on Caleb Elarm's or down the middle of the field.
00:12:51Yeah, he hits him early.
00:12:53That's an easy call.
00:12:54Would not have been completed anyway, in my opinion.
00:12:58Nevertheless, that's an easy call.
00:13:00He's just there too early.
00:13:01Knocks the receiver off balance.
00:13:03Doesn't give him a chance to extend up.
00:13:04Even as unlikely as it was that he caught it.
00:13:10Seven penalties for 82 yards against Buffalo today.
00:13:13Joe Brady will not be happy about that.
00:13:16Good containment there by Landon Jackson.
00:13:19Only appeared in three games a year ago.
00:13:22Between being inactive and then finishing the year on IR.
00:13:26After a season-ending knee injury in November.
00:13:28Yeah, we've been talking a lot about Landon Jackson in the preseason.
00:13:30He came back about 15 to 20 pounds heavier.
00:13:33In preparation for the changeover to the 3-4.
00:13:36And you could physically tell the guy was a different dude.
00:13:40A lot thicker than he was a year ago.
00:13:44And it seems to be helping it.
00:13:45I'm also 15 pounds heavier after spending the week with you.
00:13:49Jeez, we've been eating non-stop.
00:13:51In fact, we're going to eat more when we meet with the chef in the fourth quarter here at Highmark
00:13:55Stadium.
00:13:56But enough about that.
00:13:57Let's go down to Maddie.
00:13:59Jackson gained about 25 pounds.
00:14:02Going from 260 to 285 now.
00:14:05He said he didn't want to measure calories.
00:14:07He'd rather just eat a lot.
00:14:09So he focused on high-carb, high-protein.
00:14:12Said his favorite meal, ribeye, mashed potatoes, and green beans.
00:14:16He also had three protein shakes a day.
00:14:18Now heavier.
00:14:19He says, I feel so much more sturdier.
00:14:21I feel stronger.
00:14:22And I can hold my blocks longer.
00:14:26That's good stuff.
00:14:27Thank you, Maddie.
00:14:28And a nice tackle there by Elam Zor.
00:14:30Because if he did not get A.J. Dillon to the ground, that was going to be a touchdown.
00:14:34Yeah, this was blocked well up front by Carolina.
00:14:37They picked up the stunt from the Bills front.
00:14:40And Pickett had a chance to just hang in there.
00:14:42Came back.
00:14:43Great job by Pickett finding the receiver and just hitting him on the money.
00:14:50Had to come back, find him very quick after he turned back from across the field.
00:14:54Good completion by the Panthers.
00:14:56Fourth down and two, and Carolina's going to go for it again.
00:15:00With 6.45 to go in the third.
00:15:08Pressure coming.
00:15:09Pickett's pass.
00:15:10Bat it down.
00:15:15Jalen Kilgore, the rookie out of South Carolina, makes a big play.
00:15:20And the Panthers come up empty on their long drive.
00:15:25Kilgore getting up there for the Bills.
00:15:31Well, the Bills radio network is getting bigger this year, expanding into Canada with new affiliates in Toronto, Montreal, and
00:15:38Ottawa.
00:15:39The network now features 28 stations across five states in Canada.
00:15:43With 97 Rocks serving as the new flagship in Buffalo, Chris Brown, Eric Wood return to the booth.
00:15:49Steve Tasker will be down on the sideline.
00:15:51And for two hours of pregame and postgame, you'll have Chris Trapasso and former Bills center, Mitch Morse, who joins
00:15:58us now in the booth.
00:15:59Mitch, thanks for coming up.
00:16:00I was just talking about y'all's vantage point.
00:16:02It's biblical.
00:16:03It's not bad.
00:16:03It's unbelievable.
00:16:04I appreciate you having me on, guys.
00:16:05No, it's fantastic.
00:16:06As Shane Buschel is now in at quarterback, and his first pass is complete to Kalecki Latu for a first
00:16:12down.
00:16:13And Mitch, tell us about joining the radio team, pregame, postgame.
00:16:17How excited are you?
00:16:18Well, it's a lot of gabbing.
00:16:19But so I got Chris Trapasso with me, and he's great.
00:16:23It's been immediate chemistry together.
00:16:25I still think the powers that be who made this decision to bring me on might have made a clinical
00:16:30mistake.
00:16:31But it's for me to lose the job.
00:16:33So I'm hopefully making it to at least the second game of the season before I drop an F-bomb
00:16:37on here accidentally.
00:16:38I noticed as soon as you put the headset on, you looked for the cough button in our booth.
00:16:42So that's not a good sign, Mitch.
00:16:44Well, no, Steve was giving me free game.
00:16:46Because earlier, like I was telling him, it was a little bit of a problem.
00:16:50Yeah.
00:16:51You just remember, you're one bad joke away from homelessness.
00:16:54So take that into your broadcast career.
00:16:58The longer you can keep away from that, the better.
00:17:01Way to pump him up, Steve.
00:17:02I saw something in his eyes.
00:17:03He's got a story for that for another time, I think.
00:17:05Give us your thoughts, Mitch, on this Buffalo team, what you've heard and seen so far through training camp,
00:17:10and some of your expectations for the year.
00:17:12Yeah, I mean, expectations.
00:17:13I think we're kind of figuring this thing out as we go.
00:17:16But the anticipation of this season with the new stadium, new head coach, was palpable.
00:17:20What I've seen is, I mean, of course, there's competition all about, but especially for the depth pieces.
00:17:26And we're seeing that the defensive back position, safety position, of course, but also, I mean, I'm a homer.
00:17:31The offensive line and just those guys filling in, you know, it hasn't been perfect,
00:17:35but these guys have been fighting their tails off.
00:17:39Buschel is under center for Buffalo.
00:17:41Look at the throw to the outside.
00:17:44He's got a man and a completion, and that is the fullback, Ben Van Sumeren.
00:17:50You know, I've made the point, Mitch, about these backup quarterbacks.
00:17:53Basically, their job is to make Josh's job easier.
00:17:56Correct.
00:17:56To get him prepared.
00:17:57But you do want them to be able to play.
00:18:01I mean, right?
00:18:02Tell me, you're snapping to these guys.
00:18:04What do you expect?
00:18:05Yeah, I mean, of course, depth on your whole entire roster is important,
00:18:09but there's no more important position in sports than quarterback, and rightfully so.
00:18:14And so you want someone who's not only capable but has command of the huddle.
00:18:18And sometimes that's not anything you can kind of find except for this kind of it factor that they have
00:18:26coming in.
00:18:27Mitch, one thing I wanted to ask you about is the battle at left guard between Austin Corbett and Alec
00:18:31Anderson.
00:18:32And Brandon Bean made an interesting point with us yesterday.
00:18:35He said, look, there's no separation yet.
00:18:37It's a good competition.
00:18:38But the sooner we can get our five guys gelling together on the offensive line, the better.
00:18:44How big of a factor is that this time of year for the offensive line?
00:18:47It's extremely important, especially for a group that hasn't had much turnover and hasn't missed much time with injury.
00:18:52This is kind of a nuance in the past two or three years.
00:18:55But, of course, you want that set in stone.
00:18:57But this is something you don't want to rush.
00:18:59Just get it done by, let's just say, the third preseason game so you have a week or two together.
00:19:03What is something people don't know about how important it is for a guard?
00:19:07I mean, some quality that maybe people are unaware of.
00:19:11That's a great question.
00:19:12It's the communication highway between the tackles and the center.
00:19:15Not only are they digesting the stuff that they need to do, but often I have no idea what's going
00:19:19on outside the tackle box.
00:19:20What the tackle does, he's giving pertinent information.
00:19:23And they have to kind of be the communication line, and also they have to dive into two completely different
00:19:28techniques when he's working with a tackle and a center.
00:19:32How about this stadium, Mitch, and specifically the grass field?
00:19:35What kind of impact does that make for a player?
00:19:38Yeah, I know analytics say that it really doesn't for injury, but for the psyche, it's incredible.
00:19:42I mean, just the pounding on your joints, it's a little bit slower, although this is pretty fast grass.
00:19:48But it makes that much of a difference, especially you don't feel it when you're doing it, but you feel
00:19:51it when you fall down, to be honest.
00:19:52Frank Gore Jr. with a nice run up the middle, but there is a flag behind the play, and I
00:19:57think this one's coming back.
00:19:58Jude Bowery, I think, is going to have this come back, yeah.
00:20:08That's the worst feeling, I've got to imagine, when you're an offensive lineman, and that flag flies in behind the
00:20:12play.
00:20:13You usually know it's coming.
00:20:14Yeah.
00:20:14Yeah, you usually do.
00:20:15But, I mean, listen, this is one of those things, especially for a guy like Jude Bowery, getting these repetitions,
00:20:20getting your memory bank of things to learn from.
00:20:22This will stick with him for the rest of his career.
00:20:24The good plays that he makes and the ones that he wants back, this isn't bad.
00:20:28Like, making this, as long as he's giving great effort and learning from these, it's part of the process.
00:20:32Joe Brady was telling us yesterday that one of the things he was going to look at on tape after
00:20:37this game was the sideline demeanor.
00:20:39He did not want guys just sitting back on the bench, not paying attention.
00:20:44He was going to look to see who's up there and cheering and who's not.
00:20:47Tell me about, for you, when you were a starter coming out of the preseason game, what's the second half
00:20:53like when you're a starter?
00:20:54It's exciting.
00:20:55You've seen the work that these guys have put in.
00:20:57You know the amount of pressures on them.
00:20:59It's their livelihood.
00:21:00It's their job.
00:21:01It's for a lot of guys.
00:21:02It's their first opportunity to get this thing going.
00:21:05And, of course, you hear us coach speak, but you are putting your resume out for 31 other teams, especially
00:21:10if you're playing in the second half.
00:21:11And you've been with these guys through fall, I mean, through the beginning of fall, all through spring.
00:21:16It's a relationship-based business, and they're very intimate in the football setting.
00:21:20So you just want to see the guys in your room prosper.
00:21:23Yeah, there's a lot going on in these games, and we have made the point as well, after these games
00:21:27are over, they scour this film.
00:21:29The players will have conversations about it.
00:21:31The coaches will have arguments about it.
00:21:33But when practice resumes on Monday, or they get a day off tomorrow, Sunday, there's going to be some changes
00:21:40in the depth chart, who's getting reps with the ones.
00:21:44Talk about that dynamic and how you start to get a feel for what your team will look like in
00:21:50the regular season.
00:21:50Yes.
00:21:51This first preseason game is where guys are learning to digest information in a different environment.
00:21:56The stuff that they've accrued the past 11 practices, it's a totally different ballgame.
00:22:00And this is, of course, very relatable to bringing that to when the game matters in season.
00:22:06But it also lights a fire.
00:22:08Like, if you get bumped up, you don't want to lose that spot.
00:22:11And if you're in the outside looking in, you know exactly what you need to work on from this film,
00:22:15and you can apply that.
00:22:16And they love to see when guys maybe fall kilter a bit, but apply what they need to to better
00:22:21themselves, especially around the next preseason game, and with that joint practice coming up.
00:22:25Third down and eight.
00:22:26Buchel taking another deep shot for Goss now.
00:22:29And it's incomplete, but a flag comes in.
00:22:32Now a second flag comes in as well.
00:22:35So two penalty markers down.
00:22:38We've got one guy, I think, calling a hole.
00:22:40The other guy calling interference.
00:22:41We'll see.
00:22:42It looks, both of them look to be against the defense.
00:22:47Goss now looked like he had a play on the ball, but there was some contact between both players.
00:22:58Pass interference.
00:23:00Defense.
00:23:00Number 31.
00:23:01So an automatic first down for the Bills, and Shane Buchel has them moving down the field.
00:23:06That's a crusher because it's a spot foul.
00:23:08It's not just five yards from the line of scrimmage.
00:23:10That goes all the way down as if it was caught.
00:23:12Yeah.
00:23:12And that hurts.
00:23:15Two impressive drives coming out of the half.
00:23:18All the Buffalo quarterbacks have looked good today.
00:23:21Yeah.
00:23:23Buchel on his first drive, but has him in the red zone here on first down and 10.
00:23:27Ian Wheeler is the running back.
00:23:29Give to Wheeler, and he pushes forward to the 11.
00:23:40What was the hot topic on the pregame show today, Mitch?
00:23:44Oh, I mean, of course, just taking in the sights and sounds.
00:23:49The anticipation from the fans coming in here, starting their new routines, right?
00:23:54You hear when you talk to guys who were there with the opening of the Ralph,
00:23:57whether their parents brought them or their grandparents.
00:23:59And now it's the establishment of those new routines, along with just the position battles
00:24:03that we've kind of seen come unfold, and these guys really shining.
00:24:06Like a Jordan Hancock, to me, has played out of his mind.
00:24:09And Deion Walker, and especially in that first half, was amazing.
00:24:13Buchel had pressure coming, got rid of it.
00:24:15Yeah, that was a throwaway.
00:24:16And it's a good move by Buchel.
00:24:18Well, and you look at how these quarterbacks are doing.
00:24:21Josh Allen, 6 of 8.
00:24:22Kyle Allen was 14 of 16.
00:24:26One touchdown between them.
00:24:28It's a pretty good half by those two guys, and now Buchel taking the entire second half.
00:24:33Mitch, did you always have a feeling as a player that when you were going to be done with football,
00:24:38you wanted to get into broadcasting?
00:24:39Or is this something that just kind of came up?
00:24:41You know what?
00:24:43You always don't think you have an ego, and then you want to be hurt.
00:24:46I'm just kidding.
00:24:47You just want people to recognize you.
00:24:49No, I've always enjoyed it.
00:24:50I started in production meetings, probably later in my career.
00:24:53And then just football, for me, is all I know.
00:24:56And it's something I love talking about.
00:24:58And being involved in this capacity with this team is great.
00:25:03Buchel, a magic act to keep that play alive.
00:25:05And he throws it into the stands on third down.
00:25:09So Tyler Bass will come out as we check in with Maddie.
00:25:12You know, asking Mitch Morse about if he wanted a career in journalism.
00:25:15He went to Mizzou, guys.
00:25:17He did not major in journalism.
00:25:19We graduated in the same class.
00:25:21I am so surprised, Mitch, you are doing journalism things right now by being on air.
00:25:27Look at you go, man.
00:25:29Fake it till you make it, Maddie.
00:25:30Look at Maddie keeping receipts.
00:25:33She was the beat writer for, I think, the students at the time.
00:25:37Yeah.
00:25:37So I got to know him and come for a very long time.
00:25:41Tyler Bass, 29 yards away, is good.
00:25:43Mitch, we look forward to hearing you all season long, pregame, postgame.
00:25:46Thanks for coming up to the booth.
00:25:47God bless you, guys.
00:25:48Thank you so much, Steve.
00:25:49You're the man, Andrew.
00:25:50God bless you, buddy.
00:25:51Seven-mile trail surrounding Highmark Stadium, featuring interactive fitness and wellness activities for all ages.
00:25:59Bring the family, get moving, and be among the first to experience Buffalo's newest year-round community destination.
00:26:08And, Steve, I know that was a high priority for the Pagoula family to have something around the stadium just
00:26:14like that.
00:26:14And they're trying to turn it into, and they really are making a great effort and making it a little
00:26:19bit of a public park where people can come down, walk around, and have a pleasant afternoon walk or an
00:26:25evening walk.
00:26:26Look, we've seen the results, and people are down there going around the stadium constantly during the day.
00:26:34Miles Davis on the return for the Panthers, and he's not going to get to the 30-yard line.
00:26:40And that's where the Panthers' offense will take over with 1.22 to go in the third quarter.
00:26:45Bills up 6.
00:26:47So a look from our drone of the old stadium over across the street to the new stadium.
00:26:57And inside the new stadium, Maddie is with Deion Dawkins.
00:27:01I'm now joined by Deion Dawkins.
00:27:03Deion, 10 years into your NFL career, how are you challenging yourself this season?
00:27:09Oh, man, one, it's a beautiful honor, right, to be able to make it this long in the league when
00:27:15the initial rumor is NFL, which is not for long, and I seem to have done it for a long
00:27:19time.
00:27:20So I'm thankful.
00:27:21I got some good coaches.
00:27:22I got some good teammates.
00:27:23I'm happy to be here.
00:27:24What are we making it, 20 years?
00:27:25You said not for long, but it's long for you, man.
00:27:2720 years.
00:27:29Sheesh, yeah, okay.
00:27:3020 years, I'll be over here on the sideline and with you to talk about how does it feel to
00:27:33be going 10 years, Jude?
00:27:36For real.
00:27:37So I'm excited for that.
00:27:39Defensive linemen keep getting bigger and stronger and faster, but the offensive linemen, you have your technique.
00:27:45What are you perfecting in your number 10 technique-wise?
00:27:48Oh, man, I decided to lose weight, one.
00:27:51I said let's play lighter and let's play faster, right?
00:27:54Like we need to play quicker and we need to play lighter so we can match up with these guys
00:27:59because, like, these D linemen, like what you said, like they're getting better and better every year.
00:28:03And when I mean better and better every year, like they physically even look different.
00:28:07Like it's like, whoa, like you played De'Anne 10 years ago, you ain't look like that.
00:28:11But now it's just like a whole different mutant ballgame.
00:28:14So at myself, I said let's work on feet, let's stay lighter, hands, and just try to be as swagged
00:28:19out as possible.
00:28:19De'Anne, thank you so much.
00:28:21Appreciate the time.
00:28:21Yeah, you already snowed.
00:28:25Never a dull moment, Maddie.
00:28:27Thank you so much.
00:28:28De'Anne Dawkins, one of a kind.
00:28:31Third down and one could be the final play of the quarter as A.J. Dillon has the first down.
00:28:36And finally tracked down from behind by Joe Andreessen.
00:28:42And that'll be how the third quarter will come to an end.
00:28:48And through three, Buffalo 16, Carolina 7.
00:28:53You're watching the Buffalo Bills preseason opener at brand new Highmark Stadium.
00:29:01For his first preseason win here today, youngest coach in the National Football League.
00:29:07And you talk, man, that guy's got some energy.
00:29:10And I think his players see it and they feed off of it.
00:29:14First down and 10 for Kenny Pickett in trouble.
00:29:18And down he goes.
00:29:22Mike Dana, who was signed in the offseason from the Kansas City Chiefs, coming up to make that play.
00:29:30He comes off the edge and does get around.
00:29:33I didn't know if he was going to be able to make it.
00:29:35So many times you see those guys, you can't get the grip because you're extended so far.
00:29:41And it does a nice job there grabbing on and holding.
00:29:44And Pickett does the right thing to tuck it away.
00:29:47But that's a big play to start this drive.
00:29:49A loss of two on the play.
00:29:57Pickett fires to the outside.
00:29:58It's caught.
00:29:59And Toriano Pride is right there to make the tackle.
00:30:03As you look at some of the new coaches on this staff under Joe Brady.
00:30:08Certainly, we've talked about Jim Leonard, Jeff Rogers, now the special teams coordinator.
00:30:13I think Bo Hardigree is going to have a really big role with this team.
00:30:16The QB coach, he'll be Josh's liaison down on the field.
00:30:20Pete Carmichael, the offensive coordinator, up in the booth today.
00:30:24He's going to figure out where it'll be best for him to be as this preseason goes along.
00:30:28But some new faces, Steve, and certainly an impressive staff.
00:30:31And that's one thing Brandon Bean told us.
00:30:33He loves the coaches that Joe Brady hired.
00:30:36Yeah, they've got a really experienced staff.
00:30:39Did you see the incompletion there?
00:30:41They've got a very experienced staff.
00:30:43But they are feeling out their roles.
00:30:45As we said, Jim Leonard is on the sidelines.
00:30:48He has notoriously been up top in his career in the booth.
00:30:53Pete Carmichael is the opposite.
00:30:55Pete Carmichael has been one of those on-the-field offensive coaches.
00:30:58Now he's upstairs, and, of course, the rest of that list,
00:31:02they all have to feel out and flesh out their game-day responsibilities.
00:31:07You mentioned the quarterback's coach.
00:31:09Their job, as well, is to be a liaison between the coordinator
00:31:14and the run game coordinator, passing game coordinator,
00:31:16and the quarterback on a day-to-day basis.
00:31:19Hugely important roles they still have to fill out.
00:31:21Fourth and seven, and Dana gets there again.
00:31:24Again, his second sack of the drive, and that ends the drive for the Panthers.
00:31:35Mike Dana, in his first year with the Bills,
00:31:38comes up with his second sack,
00:31:40and the Bills are going back on offense for Joe Brady.
00:31:44The executive chef of Highmark Stadium joins us now.
00:31:47He came with gifts and food.
00:31:49Nicholas, thank you so much.
00:31:50Thanks for having us.
00:31:51How have things been going so far?
00:31:52I've had the best time here in Buffalo.
00:31:54We've had the opportunity to actually create our own wing sauces here
00:31:57from peppers grown locally in Buffalo.
00:32:00We have a nice medium with our Treasure Cave blue cheese,
00:32:03and we also have a spicy golden barbecue.
00:32:05Two really great sauces, and, again, the blue cheese to pair.
00:32:09We've been walking around today.
00:32:10I think Andrew and I are the only people who have not eaten today in the entire state.
00:32:14And I've been waiting all day to feed y'all.
00:32:16Well, I think that's kind of one of the highlights,
00:32:18as Shane Buchel is off to the races here.
00:32:21But I know a priority for you and the team here was getting authentic Buffalo-area foods.
00:32:28You talk about the wing sauce is a perfect example.
00:32:30The wing sauce is a great example.
00:32:32You know, we went through so much R&D to actually get to where we wanted.
00:32:35We tested on local Buffalonians to make sure we were on point.
00:32:39Well, I haven't.
00:32:40You haven't tested with me yet.
00:32:42I want you.
00:32:43Nicholas, you know this.
00:32:44Yes, Buffalonians will not hesitate to tell you how your wing tastes.
00:32:47I can tell you that.
00:32:48Yes.
00:32:49They are not shy.
00:32:50The spicy golden is my favorite.
00:32:52I'm going to let Andrew eat the wing.
00:32:55One of us has to have our mouths empty while the game goes on.
00:32:58Here we go.
00:32:58Can't Nicholas call the game?
00:33:00Ian Wheeler off to the races here.
00:33:02He's going to get the first down.
00:33:03And then another thing we did here is we paired with Rizzo's Chicken Parm, Rizzo's House of Parm in Canada.
00:33:12They hate the open practice here.
00:33:14You sold out.
00:33:15I sold out.
00:33:16People were upset.
00:33:17I can tell you we went through about 3,000 sandwiches today alone.
00:33:21Today alone.
00:33:23And we're still going.
00:33:24That's amazing.
00:33:24I think you should.
00:33:26I think we can at least split this one.
00:33:27Well, I do want to try the spicy wing.
00:33:29I haven't gotten there yet.
00:33:30This one's the spicy golden?
00:33:31Yeah, let's do that.
00:33:32Let's do that.
00:33:32Now, tell me about the spicy golden sauce.
00:33:35So, the spicy golden sauce, we actually use orange habanero peppers.
00:33:39And then we pair it with a tangy barbecue sauce.
00:33:42Wow.
00:33:42That one's good, right?
00:33:44Oh, my gosh.
00:33:45The tangy habanero is...
00:33:47That's a good one.
00:33:48That's tremendous.
00:33:50Well, and then to wash this all down, guys, there's two specialty cocktails we brought up for you.
00:33:55One, the Loganberry Rush.
00:33:57Super delicious.
00:33:57It's a Loganberry vodka-based.
00:33:59And then the tart cherry smash, which is served in the bowling ball, just like they do out in the
00:34:05hammer lot outside.
00:34:07Wow.
00:34:07That is amazing.
00:34:07So, this one's got a tart cherry, a little spice rum.
00:34:10I think the bowling ball is your move.
00:34:12Okay.
00:34:12Well, look at this.
00:34:12You know, usually I wouldn't do this, but since you're here.
00:34:15Since I'm here.
00:34:16Oh, you know, I wouldn't do this either.
00:34:18But...
00:34:18These are...
00:34:19This is awesome.
00:34:20Wow.
00:34:21That bowling ball packs a punch.
00:34:23I highly recommend the chicken parm sandwich.
00:34:26People were right to buy it out.
00:34:27It's great.
00:34:28It's great.
00:34:28Let's cheers.
00:34:29Grab your drink.
00:34:30Hey, cheers.
00:34:30This is tremendous.
00:34:31Here's my bowling ball.
00:34:31This is awesome.
00:34:32Nicholas, that's amazing.
00:34:33Game one, gentlemen.
00:34:34Amazing.
00:34:35Congratulations on getting this week.
00:34:37Come over here during the week.
00:34:39Your staff is here, like, all week.
00:34:41Yes, sir.
00:34:41Grinding away.
00:34:42Yes, sir.
00:34:42And they've got commissaries everywhere in this building.
00:34:45How big is the staff?
00:34:46Right now, we're about 60 on the culinary side.
00:34:50And then we do pull in a bunch of groups to help us out in the concession stands.
00:34:54Right.
00:34:55But I have a robust team of chefs, man.
00:34:57We are all firing on all cylinders.
00:34:59Can't really slow down on this one.
00:35:02Shane Buschel has a completion.
00:35:06And the Bills are in the red zone after that catch by Jamori Macklin.
00:35:11And now I have wing sauce all over my...
00:35:13Jamori Macklin.
00:35:15I don't know if we can get a replay of that.
00:35:18That was a one-handed behind-him catch.
00:35:21And he just speared it.
00:35:23Made it look so easy.
00:35:24He's going to come from this side across here.
00:35:27And look at that.
00:35:29He didn't even put his other hand on the ball.
00:35:31It's like I'm doing this chicken parm sandwich.
00:35:33Yeah, I'm going to have to get in there in a second.
00:35:34I do have one question.
00:35:36You go into a game, how many wings do you have?
00:35:39Like, are you thinking you're going to sell in a game?
00:35:43You know, we're at like the 3,000 chicken fingers, another 2,000 to 3,000 chicken wings, pounds.
00:35:49And that's just on a game-day basis.
00:35:51And don't forget the 3,000 chicken parm sandwiches that people bought today.
00:35:55It's been a good one.
00:35:56That's amazing.
00:35:57I do have to tell you that when Steve and I got here at around 9 a.m., we took
00:36:01the wrong elevator because I followed Steve, of course, and we ended up in the kitchen.
00:36:05So we did get a glimpse of your staff.
00:36:08It couldn't have been nicer for two lost puppies that we were walking, wandering around, looking around.
00:36:14And we opened it.
00:36:15Sure enough, we were.
00:36:16We were in the kitchen.
00:36:17It was a nice little tour.
00:36:23Second down and five with Buschel under center.
00:36:26A give to Wheeler.
00:36:27And Wheeler trying to get up the middle, and he's going to be very close to a first down.
00:36:32How long did it take you to select this menu?
00:36:35What was that process like?
00:36:36You know, and that started over a year ago, starting in August, you know, when I joined the project.
00:36:41And, you know, myself and a few others, we went out to a lot of different spots.
00:36:45We went out to all the wing spots in town.
00:36:47We went out to all the Beef on Weck spots in town.
00:36:50And truly, we took what was best from this area, and we made it our own.
00:36:55So we're really proud of the Beef on Weck we're serving.
00:36:58We're serving some Buffalo staples like a Stinger sub and a Royal sub, things that, you know,
00:37:03Western New York holds close to them, and a lot of other people visiting may not know.
00:37:07So we're really excited to introduce those things.
00:37:09That's fantastic.
00:37:10I think down the road as Wheeler goes up the middle and in for a touchdown.
00:37:14Ian Wheeler adds to the Buffalo lead.
00:37:22I think one thing you've got to think about for the future is some type of Steve Tasker's sandwich.
00:37:28Now, Steve, what would we put on that sandwich?
00:37:31Yeah, I don't want to just not even talk about ingredients.
00:37:33I don't want to hear it.
00:37:36Sounds like an 89 special or something.
00:37:39That was Steve's number.
00:37:40You know, we've got to come up with something down the road.
00:37:43I know you're very busy.
00:37:44So I just had the golden spicy.
00:37:47It's awesome.
00:37:48It's really good.
00:37:48Really good.
00:37:49That's my favorite.
00:37:50So I have to put Andrew on the spot.
00:37:51Are you a flat or a drumstick guy?
00:37:53No, no, no.
00:37:53A drumstick.
00:37:54Oh.
00:37:54See, that's an amateur move.
00:37:56Wrong answer.
00:37:57Amateur move.
00:37:58Flat guy.
00:37:59Well, Nicholas, we can't thank you enough for coming up here explaining this to us.
00:38:05We do ask that you leave all this food here.
00:38:07100%.
00:38:08But it was tremendous.
00:38:10And congratulations to you and your staff.
00:38:12Thank you very much.
00:38:12Putting together an amazing menu.
00:38:14And I'm sure everyone is going to love it when they come out to Highmark Stadium this year.
00:38:17And we look forward to chatting with you and feeding you all more.
00:38:19Awesome stuff.
00:38:20Appreciate it.
00:38:25So Ian Wheeler, who has yet to play in a regular season game, was able to find the end zone
00:38:35here.
00:38:37Bills fans may remember in the preseason two years ago, he was with the Bears.
00:38:42He actually scored two touchdowns against the Bills in that game.
00:38:46Now, after this penalty, Buffalo is going to line up and go for two.
00:38:50But this is another, I think, preseason decision.
00:38:56Well, you're up 22, so you're up 15.
00:39:01Bouchelle throwing incomplete.
00:39:04Intended for Macklin.
00:39:06With 8.46 to go in the game.
00:39:08But Buffalo increases its lead.
00:39:11Shane Bouchelle leads him down the field.
00:39:13And Ian Wheeler caps it off with a touchdown run.
00:39:26Fans came early to check out Highmark Stadium today.
00:39:30We sailed right in around 9 a.m. this morning.
00:39:34And the Bills have to be happy with what they've done offensively.
00:39:39Those quarterbacks have performed well today.
00:39:43375 yards of total offense for Buffalo to 121 for the Panthers.
00:39:48It always shows up as, and you can stick a feather in your cap, that you like your depth.
00:39:54Because you're down the roster.
00:39:56You're getting your, between the 50th and 85th player of the roster are playing.
00:40:00And they continue to have success.
00:40:02It really says good things about the depth of your roster.
00:40:05And that's what the second half of these preseason games you're trying to find.
00:40:11Fourth quarter.
00:40:128.39 to go.
00:40:1322.
00:40:14Bowl this year.
00:40:16And here's what's waiting for the Bills over the first four weeks of the regular season.
00:40:21Our Ticketmaster upcoming schedule.
00:40:23They open up week one at Houston.
00:40:26Then the Thursday night home opener here at Highmark.
00:40:29Another home game against the Chargers and Patriots.
00:40:32So three of the first four at home.
00:40:36Ticketmaster, the official ticket marketplace of the Buffalo Bills in the NFL.

00:40:45New quarterback for Carolina is Kyle Trask.
00:40:48He was signed on Sunday because Haynes King, who played so well in the Hall of Fame game,
00:40:54injured his hamstring.
00:40:55So Trask, who knows Canales and Brad Idzik, their offensive coordinator from their time
00:41:00in Tampa, now joins the team.
00:41:03That tackle made nicely there by Zane Durant.
00:41:09Draft pick this year out of Penn State.
00:41:21Pass to the outside is complete to Casey Washington,
00:41:24who cuts it back up and is stopped there.
00:41:30Wanda Owens in on that tackle.
00:41:32He was signed yesterday.
00:41:34Brought back because the Bills had some safety injuries.
00:41:40Wanda was with the team throughout the offseason, and then with other injuries that happened,
00:41:45they needed some depth at other positions, so he was released.
00:41:48And, of course, they told him out of the side of their mouth, don't go anywhere.
00:41:53And sure enough, here he is back with the team when other injuries happened, and they need him back.
00:42:07Panthers on the ground, great tackle made by Theron Gaines, the undrafted rookie out of Tennessee Tech.
00:42:15Well, if you missed the beginning of the game, Josh Allen played two series, and, boy, did he look good.
00:42:21Moving the ball right down the field, he finished 6 of 8 for 111 yards and a touchdown.
00:42:28Yeah, they were very effective offensively.
00:42:31He did a little bit of this.
00:42:33This led to the touchdown.
00:42:34This is a Josh Allen play right there, no question about it.
00:42:37But they looked steady.
00:42:39They looked productive.
00:42:40Joe Brady gave him a nice menu of offensive play calls to give him some misdirection,
00:42:44and they executed really, really well.
00:42:48Trask escapes and has a lot of room to run, but there is a flag down behind the play.
00:42:53And a big hit.
00:42:55Jalen Kilgore again.
00:42:59That was also Kate Denhoff again as well, coming in late.
00:43:06Holding.
00:43:07Offense for 74.
00:43:09Hold against Carolina.
00:43:11We'll bring this one back.
00:43:17Right here.
00:43:19Right here.
00:43:20As the quarterback gets loose, he...
00:43:24And here's the hit.
00:43:26One of...
00:43:28That's...
00:43:29Kilgore and Denhoff.
00:43:30Yeah.
00:43:35Yeah, that guy knows what that's like.
00:43:37Josh Allen has taken his share of hits during his career.
00:43:40And not for nothing, he's delivered about just as many.
00:43:45That one is picked off!
00:43:49Great anticipation on that play.
00:43:52And Josh Allen all fired up.
00:43:55It is Kanai Walker, the undrafted rookie out of Arkansas.
00:44:00Oh, that is a great play.
00:44:02A very heads-up, aggressive play by a young DB.
00:44:06You think these guys are going to come in?
00:44:08You think it's going to be too much for him?
00:44:10He sees it right away.
00:44:12And absolutely...
00:44:13He sees it early.
00:44:14Look how early he jumped that route.
00:44:17He saw it coming.
00:44:19And just picked it off.
00:44:21What a play.
00:44:24That's the sideline demeanor we mentioned earlier that Joe Brady was looking for.
00:44:29Allen all fired up.
00:44:30And that whole Bills sideline ran down the field to celebrate with the rookie.
00:44:36Played at three different schools.
00:44:38Louisville, Oklahoma, and then Arkansas.
00:44:41Three career interceptions in college.
00:44:43And he's got one here in his first preseason game.
00:44:45I can't tell you how impressive that was.
00:44:47He saw that very early and had the confidence and the aggression to get it.
00:44:51What a play.
00:44:54Bouchelle remains the Buffalo quarterback.
00:44:56Handing off for Frank Gore Jr. at the 10.
00:44:59And he's spun down at the 6.
00:45:01A nice run by Frank Gore Jr.
00:45:05Yeah, the Bills...
00:45:06Once again, the Bills' depth proving that it's got something in there.
00:45:10Frank Gore Jr. gives him that step right up inside that outside block
00:45:15and then bounces it.
00:45:16And the Panthers got caught biting on the inside.
00:45:20Inside jab step.
00:45:25Just couldn't get around the corner enough to get to the end zone.
00:45:28A 16-yard run.
00:45:29It's first and goal as we approach five minutes to play.
00:45:38Play action.
00:45:39Bouchelle rolling right, throwing, and it is caught.
00:45:42That's Lattu making the catch at the three.
00:45:49Now, this is down.
00:45:50They pushed him back quite a bit.
00:45:52But this is going to be second and goal from the three.
00:45:55Lattu, this is...
00:45:55I mean, there wasn't much there.
00:45:58Bouchelle does a nice job to put it right on Lattu, give him a chance to get in.
00:46:01But Carolina did a nice job on that play, stringing it out and shutting out all the alleys that Bouchelle
00:46:09had to throw it to.
00:46:14Second and goal.
00:46:21Goer up the middle and in for a touchdown.
00:46:24Frank Gore, Jr.
00:46:31And he hands it off for Bruno Fina to spike the ball in the end zone.
00:46:39Yeah, this is not nothing on this run play.
00:46:43It's a little dive play.
00:46:44But they've got nine guys in the box.
00:46:46And the Bills still punch it in.
00:46:49That's a nice job by the Bills up front.
00:46:52There's Bruno going to work.
00:46:54There you go.
00:46:55Nice job, Bruno.
00:46:57Son of former Bills first-rounder John Fina.
00:47:02Played ten years for Buffalo.
00:47:04His bass's extra point is good.
00:47:10So the interception by Kanai Walker puts the Bills in great field position.
00:47:18And Frank Gore, Jr. scores.
00:47:20It's 29-7.
00:47:27Entering his ninth season.
00:47:30And look at these numbers.
00:47:31Peyton Manning and Josh over their first eight NFL seasons.
00:47:35And then in the ninth year, Peyton Manning won the Super Bowl.
00:47:39Certainly Bills fans hoping that history repeats itself.
00:47:43Nice special teams tackle made there by the fullback, Ben Van Sumeren.
00:47:48The one – let's check in with Maddie.
00:47:52She's got a special guest.
00:47:53I'm now joined by Bills wide receiver Khalil Shakir.
00:47:57Khalil, year five for you.
00:47:59You know Josh Allen very well at this point in your career.
00:48:02How are you guys improving your chemistry year after year?
00:48:05Yeah, I think it's just a repetition of things.
00:48:08Like getting comfortable off-season OTAs and training camp up until this point is just repetition of doing different things,
00:48:13trying different things, and getting on the same page.
00:48:15Trying different things.
00:48:16What are the new things you two are trying this season?
00:48:19I think for me just expanding the route tree.
00:48:21And I think getting familiar with that with Josh and getting on the same page within different routes, the steps,
00:48:28the timing, all those things.
00:48:30Trying out different positions.
00:48:31We heard from head coach Joe Brady saying that DJ Moore adds a lot to this wide receiver room.
00:48:37He makes it hard for opposing defenses.
00:48:39Are you excited to see what that's going to look like on game day?
00:48:44Yeah, I mean even today you saw up until this point in training camp and everything, DJ is a baller.
00:48:49And he's been at the top of our position for years now.
00:48:51And just to have his presence out there, you've got to pay attention.
00:48:54DJ Moore is a dog for a reason.
00:48:56He's a top receiver for a reason.
00:48:57He's going to show that every single time.
00:48:59So I'm excited just to continue to see that connection and how that opened things up for everyone.
00:49:05It's a beautiful thing.
00:49:06There's a baby boom happening on this team right now.
00:49:09Over the last year and a half, more than 15 players and coaches have had kids.
00:49:13You are a part of that group.
00:49:15What's the best part about being a new dad, Cleo?
00:49:18It's fun.
00:49:19It's fun.
00:49:20I left the hotel earlier this morning and walked in and she's just sitting there staring at me, happy to
00:49:24see me.
00:49:25It gives you a different perspective.
00:49:26Like you go out there and you're motivated to do things for your child.
00:49:29You know, like it's a new energy.
00:49:30It's a new juice.
00:49:31I think everybody who has kids like knows that feeling, you know.
00:49:34So it's a beautiful thing.
00:49:36Josh Allen has also become a dad as well.
00:49:38How have the conversations shifted to diapers and new milestones?
00:49:43Yeah, it's diapers.
00:49:46When was the last time you changed a diaper?
00:49:49Have you done a night shift?
00:49:51It's funny just to see like everybody, how they parent, how much of like how different fathers we all are.
00:49:56You know, so it's a cool thing to have those stories and talk about.
00:49:58Well, thank you so much.
00:50:00Thank you.
00:50:01That's great.
00:50:02Thanks so much, Maddie.
00:50:03As the Bills were hoping that ball came out.
00:50:07But the call on the field is that the receiver was down.
00:50:12Another look is Mitchell Evans.
00:50:15Does he get the knee down?
00:50:18Looks like it is down there.
00:50:21Joe Brady is going to throw his first challenge flag.
00:50:25He held it.
00:50:26He's getting a big ovation from the team on the sideline.
00:50:30He was looking up at the video board and he throws out the challenge flag.
00:50:39There we go.
00:50:40Buffalo's challenging the rule of the field.
00:50:41I don't like his chances.
00:50:45But I think he kind of knew that when he threw the challenge.
00:50:49But he didn't want to try it.
00:50:51Some of it is just the process of going through this.
00:50:55The communication with the booth upstairs.
00:50:57And the Bills do have a new officiating consultant this year.
00:51:02Mike Chase, a former NFL replay official, is now joining the Bills on game day.
00:51:07John Parry did that in the past.
00:51:09And he will still consult for Buffalo from home.
00:51:12But it will be Mike Chase who's on the headset for every game with Joe Brady.
00:51:17It's a lot closer than it first appeared.
00:51:19But I do believe his shin is on the ground right there.
00:51:23And you can't see the ball there, of course.
00:51:26But I think he still has a grip on it when the bottom of his shin hits the ground.
00:51:32But it's close.
00:51:35But I think the officials got that one right.
00:51:39I don't know that this is going to go the Bills' way.
00:51:42But you're right.
00:51:43I mean, so much of this is, all right, let's see how we're doing.
00:51:50And the communication, I mean, Joe gave us a little insight into it.
00:51:56And he said, yeah, we can challenge it, but I don't like your chances.
00:51:59After review, the ruling on the field stands.
00:52:02Fourth down.
00:52:03Buffalo is charged their first time out.
00:52:05Ruling on the field stands.
00:52:06So Joe Brady's first challenge is a loss.
00:52:10But they did not give him the first down.
00:52:13And so it's fourth down and a half a yard.
00:52:16Carolina will stay on the field offensively here with 2.59 to go and trailing.
00:52:21I think Josh Allen is giving him a hard time on the toss.
00:52:25He wanted a big old, you know, baseball throw.
00:52:28And Joe just kind of underhanded it down on the field.
00:52:31So that's something to work on.
00:52:32It's the preseason for everyone.
00:52:33Yeah, I don't know if Joe's too interested in Josh's opinion about him.
00:52:41Fourth down and one, three minutes to go in the fourth.
00:52:45And Carolina's going to get just enough for a first down.
00:52:51Yeah, the Bills have looked extremely good in all phases today, except one.
00:52:55Their punt game, we don't know if it's on point or not
00:52:58because they've never punted in this game.
00:53:01And Joe Brady gave us a talking to about, listen, I hate punting,
00:53:06but I've got to get some punts in.
00:53:08We've got to get our, you know, Tommy Doman is up today,
00:53:12and all he's done is hold for field goals.
00:53:15So their punt team has not gotten a single rep.
00:53:19Which is also an important part of that punting competition,
00:53:23the holds, as good running there by Anthony Tyus.
00:53:27But it's not, that's not going to determine the job,
00:53:30although you do want Tyler Bass to be comfortable,
00:53:33and certainly it's a part of it, but he wants to see some punts
00:53:36and doesn't look like he's going to get them.
00:53:38I believe, I remember that Doman had not done that in college.
00:53:41He was not asked to do that in college,
00:53:42so everybody's kind of wringing their hands about,
00:53:46and in the open practice and here today,
00:53:49their operation has looked not only smooth, but fast.
00:53:55They seem to have that thing down really, really well.
00:54:00Trask throws, and he's got a first down,
00:54:03and that should take us to the two-minute warning
00:54:06as Rock Taylor reels that one in.
00:54:13Two minutes to go in the preseason opener.
00:54:17Buffalo on top, 29-7.
00:54:20Quarter.
00:54:21Incredible journey for offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael
00:54:25in 1984 when then Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie,
00:54:30future Bill, took a 64-yard bomb throw to beat Miami
00:54:36as time expired in what's now dubbed the Miracle in Miami game.
00:54:41Pete Carmichael was on the field for that game.
00:54:4512 years old at that time.
00:54:46He was holding the headset wire for Boston College head coach Jack Bicknell.
00:54:51His father, Pete Carmichael Sr., was on staff as a defensive backs coach.
00:54:56Carmichael says, I can still recite the radio call today.
00:54:59He said that he and Flutie were just together
00:55:01at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Shrymon,
00:55:04said that they reminisced on some of those memories.
00:55:0642 years later, Carmichael is now the offensive coordinator
00:55:10where Flutie spent three seasons.
00:55:12Best part about the story, he says his sisters still give him crap
00:55:16about what he wore on the sidelines,
00:55:18saying, you're a tire on the sidelines.
00:55:20It was not good.
00:55:23That's amazing.
00:55:24What a story.
00:55:25Thank you so much, Matty.
00:55:26That's what sisters are for, right?
00:55:28That is awesome.
00:55:30Kind of a full circle moment.
00:55:33You go back and look at where these guys start.
00:55:35We've been down the list of resume that Joe Brady has.
00:55:39These guys start.
00:55:40Coaching these days really is still kind of an apprenticeship,
00:55:44climb the ladder type of industry.
00:55:47There's so much to learn, and you've got to start somewhere,
00:55:49and these guys all just look for one chance to get their foot in the door.
00:55:54Pete Carmichael ending up going from a cord grip just to an offensive play.
00:56:01And these two guys, Pete Carmichael, Joe Brady,
00:56:04both on staff with Sean Payton in 2017 with the New Orleans Saints.
00:56:08It's just an industry that seems so big because it's everywhere in the country,
00:56:14but it's not that big.
00:56:15There's only a couple thousand players, a few hundred coaches any given year,
00:56:20and they cross-pollinate quite a bit.
00:56:22And it's a setup that Carmichael is familiar with because when he was with Sean Payton,
00:56:27who was the head coach, he also called the plays just like Joe Brady is doing now with Buffalo.
00:56:33There's a flag down on this last play.
00:56:35It's going to be a hold against the Bills.
00:56:37That will certainly be on the chalkboard in the next team meeting,
00:56:41all the penalties today for Buffalo.
00:56:43Yeah, if there's a downside to this game that you're winning 29-7,
00:56:47that would be it.
00:56:49The penalties have been on both sides of the ball, offense and defense,
00:56:53although a lot of penalties in the defensive backfield for Buffalo.
00:56:59One thing they wanted to focus on today and that Joe Brady was curious about, Steve,
00:57:03was the tackling because, as we pointed out,
00:57:05you can't really do a lot of that when you're in training camp.
00:57:09And, you know, to me, I thought they tackled pretty well today.
00:57:12There wasn't too many broken tackles by that Panthers offense.
00:57:15That's right.
00:57:16With, you know, one or two exceptions, maybe one or two runs.
00:57:20But, yeah, I would agree with you.
00:57:21I think the team got the message and did a nice job getting whoever had the ball on the ground.
00:57:29You didn't see broken tackles or missed tackles in long runs.
00:57:32They didn't give up any explosive plays.
00:57:35And that's huge for a defense.
00:57:39You got to make every offense work extremely hard to get yards against you.
00:57:43And the first guy that gets to the football making the tackle is a big step toward that.
00:57:51Tackle made there by Gaines, the undrafted rookie out of Tennessee Tech.
00:57:54We do want to thank our producer today, Ryan Galvin, our director, Andy Friedman,
00:58:00and our executive producers, J.J. Torito and Chris Jenkins.
00:58:04It's been a fun day up here in the booth at the new stadium.
00:58:07I think the chef is my new favorite guest of all time.
00:58:10Yeah, we're going to have a recurring guest spot for him, I'm pretty sure.
00:58:14He is welcome to come on the air for the remainder of the preseason, anytime he wants.
00:58:20Nicholas Carrolly bringing us some of the treats here at Highmark Stadium.
00:58:23Third down and four as we approach 30 seconds to go.
00:58:27Trask over the middle.
00:58:29And it is caught.
00:58:31To Corey Couch.
00:58:33Trask.
00:58:34Appeared to have really good coverage, but Casey Washington able to bring it in.
00:58:37Oh, man.
00:58:38You got to tip your hat to Kyle Trask on that play.
00:58:41He stood in the pocket, took the hit, and delivered the football, and it was a massive hit.
00:59:00It was not poorly defended on either end, but man, oh, man, the Panthers fit it in there.
00:59:05Jimmy Charlo, the linebacker who was the star of Hard Knocks a year ago from Army, had the big hit
00:59:12on Trask.
00:59:15Carolina has called timeout.
00:59:17First and goal, trying to score before this one goes final.
00:59:32Trask, wide open man in the end zone, and it is a touchdown.
00:59:36John Mechie with the touchdown catch in his first season with the Panthers.
00:59:43Finishing up with a touchdown here with 20 seconds to go in the game.
00:59:47And you can tell this is they get them right in the gap between the safety and the corner and
00:59:54the flat from the over route.
00:59:57That's hard to get there because it's in the red zone.
00:59:59And that play can work.
01:00:00If you're out in the field, it takes so much time to get over there.
01:00:05But because it's in the red zone, it's a shallower route, and you can get there a little bit faster
01:00:10for that play to develop.
01:00:11The player coming from the far side of the field all the way across.
01:00:17Fitzgerald comes on for the extra point.
01:00:2529-14 is our score.
01:00:27As we celebrate the new stadium, but also reminisce about the old place.
01:00:37A lifetime ago, a scoreboard gave up on us.
01:00:42Ask around.
01:00:43Everyone stayed.
01:00:45One January afternoon taught us something.
01:00:49It's never over.
01:00:53And it's certainly one of the more, if not the most memorable moment from what is now a pile of
01:00:59rubble across the street.
01:01:00Unbelievable to see it in that condition.
01:01:02I think that is the one stark reminder.
01:01:05When people come around into the neighborhood and they turn in their old favorite street and their familiar place where
01:01:11they park,
01:01:11and then they swing, you expect to see those upper decks up out of the old former high mark.
01:01:18And it's just not there anymore.
01:01:20And it leaves more than a void in the skyline for people who have visited this campus over the last
01:01:30five decades.
01:01:31It's a void in a big part of the memories of your life that is over there that is not
01:01:39there anymore.
01:01:39New memories have begun at this stadium.
01:01:43It is an incredible spectacle.
01:01:46Really well done.
01:01:47On every little nook and cranny so well thought out as the kickoff goes out of bounds.
01:01:52And that's a penalty.
01:01:55And that's a mistake by Fitzgerald, kicker for the Carolina Panthers.
01:02:06Bills will be headed to Cleveland this week.
01:02:10They have a joint practice with the Browns on Thursday.
01:02:13And then they'll hang out in Cleveland for a couple days before their next preseason game,
01:02:19which is next Sunday, next Saturday, rather, at 1 o'clock.
01:02:22Joint practices have become the new rage in the NFL that coaches love the work they get there.
01:02:29They love the lack of risk.
01:02:32And particularly this deep into training camp, a week or two or three into training camp,
01:02:37it gives them a chance to go against somebody other than their own players.
01:02:41And they really see the value in it.
01:02:43Joe Brady is a winner in his head coaching debut.
01:02:47Shaking hands with Dave Canales, the Panthers head coach.
01:02:55And a successful start in Highmark Stadium.
01:03:0129-14, the final score.
01:03:03The Bills win.
01:03:04We'll have more to come right after this.
01:03:07But the Bills start the preseason with a win.
