Willard and Dibs join Steiny and Guru for a Thursday edition of the Crossover. The guys celebrate National Radio Day, react to last night's Valkyries loss to the Lynx, preview tonight's 49ers-Chargers preseason game, and more.
Transcript
00:00Now, back to Stiney and Guru on 95.7 The Game.
00:08Crossover time brought to you by Bay Alarm.
00:10Rest easy.
00:11We've got you covered.
00:11Bayalarm.com.
00:13Willard and Dibs in the house.
00:15And how are you guys doing today?
00:18Excellent.
00:19Happy National Radio Day, baby.
00:20To those who celebrate.
00:22Oh, yeah.
00:23Yes.
00:24For those who partake.
00:25That's great, man.
00:27That's a four.
00:28All kinds of snacks out there, which is pretty exciting.
00:30I had a Twix.
00:31Yeah, and some candy and chips.
00:33And oranges and grapes.
00:35I saw that.
00:36Right.
00:36For those who celebrate.
00:37Exactly.
00:38But you will find by the end of the day when we leave at whatever, 558,
00:42the oranges will survive more than the chips and the candy will because it's radio.
00:47Let me ask you this.
00:48What did I mean this?
00:49What's radio mean to Dan Dibley?
00:51Radio means everything to me.
00:53Radio means as a kid, I was able to have that little transistor radio where you had to pull
00:59the antenna up and you had to tune it in and you'd hear Bill King and Holy Toledo's and
01:06you know, the Raiders and the Warriors and he would do the A's.
01:09You'd hear the Giants.
01:10And so for me, radio was it because I'm old enough and Steiner, you're the same.
01:15And you guys are kind of in the same ballpark where back in the day you had six channels
01:20and one of them was Channel 9.
01:22And so on TV, you got one game on a Saturday.
01:26And other than that, your sports was the radio.
01:28Wow.
01:29And Will, I'm interviewing you, Will.
01:31When did you know, you know what?
01:32I want to talk radio.
01:34This might be my profession.
01:36Very early.
01:37College?
01:37Way before that.
01:39I used to sit in front of the TV and record myself, turn the sound off on Giants games
01:44and record myself in my dad's office when I was probably, I don't know, 12.
01:51Doing the play-by-play.
01:52Yeah.
01:53I think it's an unbelievable medium and platform through which you can connect in a way that
02:00feels like one-on-one to everybody listening.
02:04Having a beer at the table, huh?
02:06The art form, the free form of it, this is a fun sort of quick realization that I had
02:13years ago when I was having an interview at what, like this is well before it was NBC
02:19Sports Bay Area.
02:20What was it before that?
02:22Comcast Sports Bay Area.
02:23Even before that, was it Fox?
02:25Sports Channel is what it was way back.
02:27So, y'all remember Ted Griggs?
02:29Of course.
02:30Oh, man.
02:30You hired me.
02:31Mentor.
02:31Years ago, I'm in, and I don't even know if it was an interview, it was a get to know
02:37you with Ted Griggs.
02:38And this is a long, long time ago.
02:41And Ted says to me, because I was on the radio and I was talking to him about TV and
02:47he goes,
02:47one thing you have working for you is I think that radio people can transition to TV very
02:53easily provided that their eyes don't do anything weird when the red light comes on.
02:59Now, the other way around is a challenge because I've heard TV people try to go to radio and
03:05TV people, if that's what you're used to doing, you had 90 seconds and you do your little TV
03:12cast.
03:13And it's scripted.
03:14Devon talks about that.
03:14I've got my teleprompter and I'm going to read it and then we go to break.
03:19And he goes, and I've watched TV people on the weekend or whatever, they'll come in and
03:23they're like, oh, come, come fill in and do the radio.
03:2690 seconds into their 28 minute segment.
03:30They're like, I'm out of stuff to say.
03:33And so the free forum, the free flowing of this to me is, is a joy.
03:39Well said guys.
03:41Kind of like this segment, right?
03:42It's what makes this segment the number one rated sports segment, radio segment in the
03:51bay.
03:51You know what?
03:51I'd like to see how important each of us are to that.
03:55Like, so if I were to leave right now and the ratings stay the same, then as the kids
04:03say, what are we really doing?
04:05They might stay the same for a day.
04:08I don't know.
04:08I have those thoughts.
04:10You're not that guy, but you are that guy.
04:13Come on, man.
04:14It's okay.
04:15It's great.
04:15Everything's great here at radio land.
04:18Yeah.
04:19I'll just say this just because, you know, I'll try to be sincere.
04:23I'm going to try to do this dibs and goo.
04:26I'm going to try to tell Mark the experience I had with TV and radio, but he'll probably
04:30tell me I was wrong.
04:32Well, you are.
04:33So I actually found like sidelines much tougher than once I got on the radio.
04:38Okay.
04:38Because it was too hard to like, I love being able to get into nuance on radio and really
04:46explain where you're at.
04:47TV was, you got 60 seconds to make your point and it's like you make it, but there's no
04:54way you can tie up all loose ends in 60 seconds.
04:58You just can't.
04:59And so you always, you bring something up in 60 seconds and then people can say, well,
05:05what about this, this, this, this, this on radio?
05:07Then you can say, well, this is what I think about that and that, and you can just go so
05:11much deeper, which I enjoy.
05:13Like, did I get it all?
05:15Did I capture it all in the 60 seconds?
05:17Yeah, I did.
05:17Is that in your head?
05:18Yeah, absolutely.
05:19And then you realize you didn't, you know, you got to be better at being succinct.
05:23You got to make your point clear and you misspeak.
05:26You got to just, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's harder for me.
05:30I don't, I don't, you have to look at the camera.
05:32Exactly.
05:33You know, it's, it's different.
05:34The free flowing nature of what we do.
05:36How many times, for instance, and I, I think your, your show is one of the best at this.
05:41You'll like freely admit when all of you guys are like, oh, well, we're in an awkward
05:45spot right now.
05:46Right.
05:47Do you know what I mean?
05:47It's no man's land.
05:48You can't do that on TV.
05:50I love it.
05:50You can't do that.
05:51There's no room for you to mess up a word or there's no room.
05:57You're just like, oh, well, that's the end of that.
05:59That's screwing me.
05:59This just went sideways and now you're going to end up on awful announcing.
06:04That's right.
06:05Is that site still around?
06:06Oh, yeah.
06:07I love that site.
06:08Didn't you bring it up yesterday?
06:09They, they, they did the major league baseball announcer rankings.
06:12They did their, uh, their annual announcer rankings.
06:15And don't tell them where do you think the Giants crew came in?
06:18What, what place?
06:19Number one.
06:21Yeah.
06:21I was going to say one.
06:23Two.
06:24I was offended that no, they weren't.
06:25Number two.
06:26Oh God.
06:27I'm not even trying to name number one.
06:29I think I got it.
06:30Go.
06:31The Mets.
06:32Nope.
06:33No.
06:33Well, it's certainly not the Yankees.
06:35Also correct.
06:36Um, the Yankees.
06:37It's also not the Athletics who came in 30th.
06:40Shout out to Kavnar and company.
06:43I'm just saying it because we're talking about the topic.
06:47I don't know why I laughed.
06:48I didn't, wow.
06:49I didn't do the rankings.
06:52Okay.
06:53Not the Nationals.
06:54I don't even know who's, who does whose games.
06:57I'm with the guy in Seattle.
06:58Everybody loves.
06:59Will Sims.
07:00Give it to me.
07:01This is San Diego Padres.
07:03And, and they're wrong.
07:05I, and I have a ton of respect for the Padres crew.
07:07They're very good.
07:08I can hear them now.
07:09They are not Kruk, Kipe, Miller, and Fleming.
07:12Wow.
07:13Um.
07:14Man, that's the traffic.
07:15Orsillo, Mark Grant, Mudcat.
07:18Yep.
07:19Jesse Agler.
07:20It was very good.
07:21Excellent.
07:21Very good.
07:22It's a very good group.
07:23Yeah.
07:23It's a very good group.
07:24It is not, and no one is, Kruk, Kipe, Miller, and Fleming.
07:28And I wonder, like, where they go next year in the annual analysis.
07:32If they plummet to, like, 17th, then, I mean, to your point, Stiney, about what if you left
07:37the crossover, if this whole thing tanks, well, then you're the guy.
07:41And if the Giants suddenly now are ranked 11th or 14th, well, it's all about Kruk.
07:47I saw, I didn't read the story today, but there was a story, I believe, in the Standard
07:52about, I guess, Kipe's going to have to make some decisions.
07:58Well, which is yes or no, I guess.
08:00He's got to decide whether he's coming back, and he said it's going to be really hard for
08:04him to figure it out.
08:05Well, I mean, just imagine the, he probably wants to keep broadcasting, but then you say
08:10yes, and then you show up the first day, and your work spouse is not there.
08:15It's a whole new normal.
08:17Well, that's your favorite phrase, Guru.
08:18It's very different from, you know, like Guru and my dynamic, where if one of us left, the
08:24other would definitely keep showing up.
08:26You know what I mean?
08:27Yeah.
08:27It'd probably make our jobs a little easier, right?
08:29Yeah, the best.
08:29If I weren't here, you'd be like, okay, you know what, I'll sign that 10-year deal now.
08:34We got in a fight, but we really didn't.
08:36I don't remember this.
08:37I got a big friend, his name's Dodger Pete, so he's all in on what's going on with the Dodgers,
08:41and he sent me this.
08:42I like to read it.
08:43You guys remember the Montreal Expos?
08:45Of course.
08:46They just sent out a tweet.
08:47I saw it.
08:48It's great.
08:48You haven't seen it, right?
08:50Was it on Twitter?
08:51Yeah.
08:51I know.
08:52Okay.
08:53Working to bring back the Expos is temporarily on hold while we start up several life insurance
09:00companies.
09:02So you get it.
09:04So, first of all, this Expos social media feed is, it's a little bit of a, it's a joke feed.
09:15Yeah, right.
09:15Right?
09:16Like, they pretend all the time like they're trying to bring the Expos back.
09:21This was another opportunity that they took.
09:24But how dirty do the Dodgers look right now, man?
09:27They took a shot at what's going on with the Dodgers.
09:30And there's a lot.
09:31There's a lot.
09:32Yeah.
09:33There's a ton.
09:34Between both those LA teams, and, you know, there's a lot going on, yet when you think about
09:40what goes on in our country in general, a lot of times when people who are millionaires
09:46or billionaires or whatever you are, the powerful people, you normally go unchecked.
09:52And whether it's a slugger who also is a really good starting pitcher who is able to sidestep
09:58a gambling investigation, or you are a multi-billionaire owner of a franchise, then you probably don't
10:04have to answer to the same things as other people.
10:08Well, listen, I don't really like to get into the whole karma thing, because I think people
10:13use it against people when stuff went a little bit sideways.
10:16But this one makes me, it makes me laugh, and it makes me laugh like belly laugh really,
10:20really hard.
10:21Because there's two things.
10:22First of all, and a lot of the national media participated in this too, they have been self-congratulatory
10:29for so many years with regard to Dodger ownership, and the constant thought has been, oh, don't
10:36get mad, your owner could do this too.
10:39Right.
10:40Well, no, they couldn't.
10:41Because without being eloquent about this, because it's lengthy and complex, the Dodgers
10:47ownership has been financially cheating.
10:49That's the quickest way that I can say it.
10:52It's also funny, because how many Dodger fans do you know who cried like crazy and are still
10:58furious with the Houston Astros?
11:00For what?
11:01For cheating.
11:02Oh, they got robbed of their World Series for cheating.
11:05Well, now you've won back-to-back championships, and it's a very different kind of cheating.
11:09It's not as direct.
11:11I won't compare the two as the same.
11:13It's dirty, though.
11:15But it's dirty.
11:15It's cheating.
11:17And where's this going?
11:19Where's this headed?
11:20And it's real quiet in L.A.
11:22All that deferred bread?
11:24I mean, it's legal.
11:26I mean, how they've got the money to go ahead and pay these deferred payments, that's the
11:31part that's shady.
11:32But what they are doing to circumvent the salary cap, that's well within the rules that have
11:38been set up.
11:39You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ FM and HD1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports
11:44Station.
11:45Always live in the free Odyssey app and now broadcasting from the Laughing Monk Studios.
11:51Kind of a sobering game last night for the Valks.
11:54Yeah, they got outclassed.
11:57Yeah, I thought you put it perfectly earlier when you talked about, you know, when you
12:01go up against a team like that, a team that's just flat better than you, and you hang your
12:07head on defense, and your defense was great yet again, but the Lynx, quietly, they also
12:13have a very good defense.
12:14And when it comes time to get a bucket, and I said this yesterday on our show, the one
12:18thing that the Valks really lack, and Mark likes to call this person the, hey, you score.
12:25Like, late in the clock, it's like you can throw it to whomever.
12:28The Valks don't have that player.
12:30Like, Gabby Williams is great, but she can't just go out there and, you know, do...
12:34They do it by committee.
12:35She can't do what Olivia Miles does, and, you know, go out there and get a bucket, and
12:39you know, Caitlin Clark, and some of the other great individual scorers.
12:43The Valks are a great team, and they hang their shingle on defense, but when you go up
12:48against a team as good, with more offensive talent, you're going to have a hard time.
12:52Yeah.
12:53And they won't play Minnesota every night, or every game, but hopefully I saw Kawakami tweet
12:58this morning, maybe the aces knock off Minnesota in the playoffs, and then they do it for you,
13:04and then you take your chances, but there's no doubt that the Valkyries, it almost makes
13:08it more special they don't got that type player that we're talking about, where we could just
13:12give you the ball, the Steph Curry.
13:14I mean, to your point, I've said this a bunch of times about college football, when people
13:19start talking about who should be invited to the championship round, and they do it by
13:24saying, this team is better than that team over there, so they should get invited.
13:28Unlike sports is not about who's better, sports is about who wins.
13:32So, I don't, like, yes, yes, the Lynx are better, but they've got to go win.
13:38Right?
13:39The Warriors have been the better team, and not one.
13:42Like, I don't, like, I think the Valkyries are basically playing to their potential.
13:47I agree.
13:47And if it's enough, it would be surprising to me.
13:53They're playing to their potential, they're ahead of schedule, they're doing all those
13:57things, but I don't think they've got enough to win it.
14:02You know, Nahegan said something interesting, and, you know, I just said to him, and I should,
14:07can you not steal this for today, just in case, in case we're dry tomorrow.
14:12No promises.
14:12Okay.
14:14I said, yeah, it's going to be interesting to see, you know, when Valk's fans, like,
14:19it's fun now, and they're getting better, but, you know, when will expectations come
14:25if they will?
14:26And he said, oh, God, the Valkyries are playing with more house money than anybody
14:32for the next, like, five years, and I was like, I don't think so.
14:37I'm like, and the Warriors are still recently removed from a title, and it feels like all
14:42their goodwill is gone among the fans.
14:45Not all of them, but you know what I mean, like, like, the Warriors aren't playing with
14:49house money because of 2022 anymore, so I just think it's an interesting question.
14:55Like, and we may not need an answer because they may win a round this year and then win
15:01it all next year.
15:02You know what I mean?
15:03They could, but I kind of buy his premise, and it might be for a different reason.
15:08Because they're brand new, you know, that whole, like, I'm sick and tired of coming
15:14in second place or third place thing usually comes from years of falling short.
15:20Like, 49er fans are now impatient because it's been 30 years more, in fact, since they've
15:28won a Super Bowl.
15:28The Valkyries will not be playing with that kind of fan emotion.
15:33There hasn't been enough time for people to build up anger, I'm wondering.
15:39Well, it's like they've set up an environment where, I don't want to say it's about the experience,
15:45but so far it's about the experience.
15:48A different fan base.
15:48No doubt.
15:49It's a little bit, I mean, it's a little overlap, but it's a different fan base.
15:53I think it'll, you know, the expectations will come the more they win, pretty much.
15:59But the fan base has no scars, to your point.
16:02The Warrior fan base, if you're an old fan like I am, where you went through so many decades
16:08of misery and then you had the great four titles, it's like, yeah, you almost can't hurt me.
16:12I'd like you to be good again and win again, but I've already gone through it.
16:16A great timeout was bad.
16:18Right.
16:18I mean, there was so much of that.
16:19And if you're a younger Warrior fan, you know only the good times.
16:23And so now that these years have gone by, four straight years where you haven't been that
16:27team, you can be a little bit more hurt.
16:29And the Valks, they're two years in and they've gone to two playoffs in a row.
16:33And Valhalla is maybe the most entertaining venue in all of sports.
16:38And you're a number two seed.
16:39So if you keep that standard up, then I think the expectations grow a little in regard to
16:44like, we've been here and done that.
16:46What's going to happen come the playoffs?
16:48I'll go ahead and say this, though.
16:49I hope this comes out right.
16:51Like, how many people do you know, yes, we're into it.
16:57Yes, the building is rocking.
17:00But that kind of fan who is emotionally down and upset and really like bummed when they
17:11lose.
17:12Do you know what I mean?
17:14Well, because you could, the Valkyries and the Lynx right now kind of feel like the Niners
17:18and the Seahawks did at the end of the year last year.
17:20The Niners are good, but there's one team that's got their number at the end.
17:26And that ticked a lot of people off.
17:29Like, that was a great year that finished with an embarrassing blowout defeat.
17:33When you get outclassed like that.
17:35So is a Valkyries fan today just like, what are we doing, man?
17:40We've got to build a roster that can beat the Lynx.
17:43I wouldn't be.
17:43I do think we have in our audience a legitimate Valkyries fan.
17:48No doubt.
17:48And it's Bleacher Dave.
17:49Okay.
17:50Like, he calls in and he kind of wants to talk about it.
17:52He called in today.
17:53And he was just like, that team is good.
17:56We're just not there.
17:58You know, did you, like, no anger.
18:00Yeah, no anger.
18:03Just, you know, that team is really good.
18:06They got a couple players.
18:07They got two players that are better than our best player.
18:09And, you know, we got a little ways to go.
18:12And I think he represents kind of the typical fan.
18:16Like, two years in, he's not, we can't beat the, why can't we beat the Lynx?
18:21You know, well, maybe because you only had two years so far in the league.
18:24So, yeah, I think it'll come, you know.
18:27But they win around, like, if they win around this year and then lose to the Lynx or something,
18:33people expect one or two more players than they can challenge next year.
18:36I mean, I'll throw this out there, though.
18:37You know, the first Valkyries game I went to last year, it still struck me.
18:42They lost and then got a standing ovation at the end of the game.
18:45Who was it again?
18:47I don't even remember.
18:48I don't even remember.
18:49I'm random.
18:50And I've never seen that in a professional sporting event.
18:53You should be mad.
18:54Well, no, I don't mean you to be mad,
18:57but have you ever thought of giving the Warriors a standing O when they lost to the Nuggets?
19:02They did a standing O.
19:04Maybe in the great timeout year.
19:07It was just, I've never seen that before.
19:10They were up.
19:10And I was like, why is everybody getting up?
19:12It was player introductions last night, and the fans were up.
19:15They don't do that at the Warrior Games.
19:17They do them when stuff comes out.
19:19But, yeah.
19:20I mean, they were up, Dibs, like, let's go.
19:22Yeah, no doubt.
19:22This is another exercise.
19:24And, I mean, if you go there to Valhalla, you know that it's going to be just that.
19:27It's going to be a sellout, and it's going to be a passionate fan base.
19:30And they've backed it up this year by winning a lot more games than they've lost.
19:34And then even yesterday, okay, you haven't beat the Lynx ever in your history,
19:38and yet you don't have your dauber too far down because you're still the number two seed.
19:44I mean, it's been a great start for them.
19:46There's no doubt about it.
19:47And I also think, and I'd have to check the attendance figures,
19:51but you can't tell me playing at home isn't tough for opponents coming to chase.
20:01Big time.
20:01Not every team sells out.
20:03No.
20:03Not every team gets 17,000.
20:05So when an opposing team comes in here,
20:09they're getting an environment that most teams don't get when they,
20:13some teams don't get when they get into a visiting environment.
20:16I think that's one of their best selling points to free agents.
20:19I do too, actually.
20:20Is the environment, the fan base, all of that.
20:24And it is.
20:24And maybe this will change through the years,
20:26but it's a very positive environment.
20:28No doubt.
20:29They went on a little run at the end, and I got to five or seven,
20:33and I was like, is this building going to, are they going to,
20:35it didn't happen.
20:36I don't understand why, but I had that thought.
20:39The place was going crazy.
20:40A little bit.
20:40And, I mean, they had dug such a hole.
20:43What were they, like four of 27 or something from three?
20:46It was just a rough night shooting the basketball.
20:49I walked the dog.
20:51Okay.
20:52And do you know what I mean by that?
20:53If the Niners went down by 21, I'm grinding on, like, can we come back?
20:59I watched the first half last night, and I'm like, I'm going to walk the dog.
21:04I was shocked they got down to seven.
21:06I was like, okay.
21:07They got outclassed.
21:10What do you guys got coming up?
21:12And who?
21:13Well, yes, the show.
21:14Okay.
21:15And then who, it would be Dan Dibley and me on the show.
21:19Oh, that part, I know.
21:20And then also, Mikey M.
21:22Mikey M, NFL Network, is actually going to be on in 21 minutes.
21:26Obviously, the game is on NFL Network tonight, so they're down in L.A.
21:30What are we looking for tonight?
21:31Just no injuries, right?
21:33Well, always that.
21:34For me, Kaelin Black.
21:35Yeah, no.
21:36Kaelin Black.
21:37That's the guy I want to see tonight.
21:39The Rock.
21:40Yeah.
21:41That's what I want to see.
21:42Let's see who plays left guard, when, and how they look.
21:46Isn't it a good thing that it's a battle steal with two leagues left?
21:49Yeah, it has to be a good thing.
21:50Okay.
21:50The things that I've been reading, it seems like Connor Colby's not going to be the guy,
21:54so you might be down to just a two-man rotation at left guard, and you'll figure out who can
22:00be that person, and then from there, the big question going forward is, can you run the
22:05ball more effectively than last year?
22:06Because that, honestly, was the biggest, I think, detriment to the offense, was you didn't
22:12have a consistent run game.
22:14Well, and I wanted to get around to this Cosell sound, so apparently Cosell thinks it will
22:19be better this year.
22:21Because of the offensive line?
22:23Well, play it if you want.
22:24It's a minute, and it's 2-10.
22:26Okay, no, we got a meeting.
22:27No, I'll summarize it for you.
22:29We're no man's land.
22:30Put your hand up at me.
22:32We'll see about a meeting.
22:34We just met for an hour.
22:36It was great.
22:37We don't have a producer here.
22:38It was great.
22:39No.
22:40Well, we just have a producer in our meeting, because our producer now is big time.
22:43I got promoted.
22:44I don't show up in meetings anymore.
22:46Not only did he not show up, he's texting us, where are we?
22:49During the meeting, so he didn't even know that we are in the air.
22:54I didn't know.
22:54What do you mean, where are we?
22:56We can't even respond to you.
22:58Pick up on Al Granty.
22:59I didn't know.
22:59My fault.
22:59My fault.
23:00I'm going to start calling him.
23:01Where are you?
23:01Where are you?
23:02Where are you?
23:03George Jefferson.
23:04He's moving on up, is what he is.
23:06Yeah.
23:07No, the question was inspired by you, Stiney.
23:09You said that yesterday.
23:11So, why would the offensive line be better?
23:13Right.
23:13So, I asked Cosell, and he gave about a one-minute answer that didn't really answer the question.
23:18So, then I circled back.
23:19I tried a different way.
23:21And I go, when you watched film last year, and you saw them not run the ball as well,
23:26could you figure out why?
23:28And he did eventually get to, the offensive line needs to play better, right?
23:35My hope, though, is the answer to your question, is that the receiving core does not allow so
23:40many defenders in the box.
23:42Yeah, that's what McCaffrey's dad said, too, when we had him on last week.
23:46Great interview with Herm, too.
23:48He was just blown away at why these dudes are getting hurt, not playing football.
23:52Yep.
23:53All right, guys.
23:54We'll enjoy that meeting.
23:56It's a good one.
23:57There's a lot going on.
23:58I'm not convinced we have one.
23:59Well, either way, you'll be ready for it.
24:01All right.
24:02You guys, get it done today.
24:03Whatever you do, get it done.
24:04Okay.
24:05I'm 95-7.
24:06Hey, you're a football player.
24:07It's football time.
24:08You got to play football.
