00:00I think Deshaun has two weeks, and I think functional might get him a third week,
00:05but he's going to have to win, and he's going to have to look good.
00:08I think I have a real case to keep it much longer than two or three weeks there
00:12because I think the Browns know.
00:14As much as the Browns said who won the quarterback battle had nothing to do
00:19with what happened on Saturday, that doesn't mean who keeps the quarterback battle
00:23or how long Deshaun keeps the starting job isn't going to be impacted
00:27by whatever they can expect week three.
00:30Listen, if it was me, I'd give him the shortest leash imaginable.
00:33I'd follow exactly what you're saying.
00:34I don't think I'm in the majority, by the way,
00:36in suggesting that I think he's got a longer leash than people think,
00:39and eight games is probably more likely the number.
00:42I'm just trying to read what the Browns have been telling us
00:44and how this whole thing is kind of ebbed and flowed.
00:46I believe Munkin when he says that this is not a week-by-week competition,
00:51but I also believe that the Browns are going to take an absurd amount
00:56of undeniable evidence that Deshaun Watson is not 20-20 Deshaun
01:00before they go to Shador.
01:02Now, speaking of Browns legends, we weren't speaking about it.
01:05I just wanted to get to Joe Thomas here.
01:06On with the morning boys talking about how long of a leash Deshaun Watson might have.
01:11Here's the one thing that he'll never say, nobody in the organization is going to say,
01:15but I guarantee it's in their mind as they made this decision.
01:18They know they start on the road for the first two weeks,
01:21and then they come home week three.
01:22How Deshaun does in those first two weeks, he must play well.
01:25I would say he's probably got to win at least one out of those two games,
01:28or they're probably going to make a decision to change the quarterback
01:32and put Shador in for week three.
01:33Because can you imagine what that stadium would be like
01:35and the distraction and the challenge of overcoming your own fan base?
01:39If you go 0-2, Deshaun doesn't play very well.
01:41And then week three, he's the starter at your home opener.
01:44And after the reception that he got in the preseason game last Saturday,
01:49and then the comments that he made, like there's no way that he wants to walk into that.
01:53And that has to weigh into the decision that he's made for the first couple games,
01:58and specifically this first game, and then thinking about coming home at week three.
02:03Munkin has said he doesn't envision this being week to week.
02:07There's some wiggle room there.
02:08Even with what Joe Thomas said there, I think there is a lot of pliability here.
02:13With, is it two weeks, is it four weeks, is it six weeks?
02:17I just tend to think Deshaun's a broken toy, and I'm going to bet on that being the case.
02:22I think it would be, honestly, it would be laughable if you gave Deshaun two weeks on the road,
02:28and then you pulled him going into week three.
02:31Because basically what you're telling me is you didn't want to reverse course
02:35and start Shador week one because you didn't want to look like you were giving in to fans.
02:39That's what my takeaway with two weeks is laughably.
02:42You have to have zero conviction to start somebody for two weeks.
02:45It's just never that quick of a hook ever.
02:47And so even the Flacco stuff last year at four weeks was a shockingly quick leash and a quick hook.
02:53And so I just, I don't know, for as much time and effort and everything that they put into Deshaun
02:58Watson
02:58and how they speak about Deshaun Watson, I just don't think two weeks is going to be enough for him.
03:02I think he'll end up seeing a home game here.
03:03I really do.
03:03And on top of it, Nick, you're seven and a half point underdogs week one against the Bucs,
03:09and then at home, or sorry, against Jacksonville, and then at home against the Bucs week two.
03:15Or, sorry, week two's on the road still, isn't it?
03:17Yeah, it is.
03:17I have the wrong lines here.
03:18I'm trying to figure out what exactly the line is for the Browns-Bucs.
03:22My apologies there.
03:22I think it's eight and a half points.
03:24Is it really that high?
03:24No, I just pulled that out of my ass.
03:26There's no way it's that high.
03:27That felt right when I said it.
03:29But anyway, what I do know is that it's five and a half.
03:31Number's five and a half.
03:32I never doubted it.
03:33So, like, seven and a half and five and a half, you're not expected to win those games.
03:37That's what I did.
03:38If it was in Cleveland, it would be eight and a half.
03:41There we go.
03:42I'm just making stuff up.
03:43I know.
03:44I can tell.
03:44I'm having fun.
03:45That's all.
03:45I don't think you are, but I'm having fun.
03:46You're not supposed to win those games is the point, though.
03:49You're really not.
03:50And so, I don't think it's going to be set by the Browns coming back and saying,
03:53we're 0-2 entering week three and we must get rid of him.
03:56I think it's going to be how he looks, but I just don't think it's going to be enough either
03:59way
03:59to completely move off of Deshaun after just two weeks.
04:02Not with how this team has talked about him.
04:04It would be as spineless as spineless gets if they did that.
04:08Which they have the ability to pull off.
04:10We should acknowledge.
04:11That will be the line to walk.
04:13Do we give them credit for having the quick hook, which means that in the face of just
04:20incontrovertible evidence, they had to do it.
04:23And should we give them credit for that?
04:25Or do we go, okay, this proves you shouldn't have done it.
04:28It's going to be a real tough one to pick.
04:29It's too quick.
04:30And so, then we will all turn around and be like, you could have just made Shador the
04:35starter the entire time.
04:36Especially if Shador goes out and throws 250 yards and they get the win week three.
04:40Yeah, you could have molded the offense towards him.
04:42You could have actually made him get all the reps and everything like that.
04:45We wouldn't have had to deal with any of the other nonsense for an end result that we all
04:49knew we were going to get to and Deshaun Watson not being good enough.
04:52I think that'll actually get angry.
04:54I might get as angry as I would if they keep it going into week eight the way that I
04:57think
04:58they will.
04:58If they just do it after two weeks with the idea that, oh yeah, our bad guys.
05:02We just wanted to see if Deshaun could do it.
05:05I can tell you right now, he can't do it.
05:06But I think that's why it's going to take him longer to figure that out.
05:08I think for Deshaun to get to the home game.
05:11And again, I would not have said this if not for his comments and his play on Saturday.
05:18I think for Deshaun to make it to week three, you have to have at least one win.
05:23And he has to look.
05:24I honestly don't even know.
05:25The more we've talked about it, I don't even know passable quarterbacks are good enough.
05:29I don't think they're looking at the win and losses in regards to Deshaun Watson.
05:32He's 2-0 even if he looks like crap.
05:33We're too analytical of a front office to care about regular season win-loss records with
05:37quarterbacks.
05:38They'll say two games is too small of a sample size, but he's 2-0.
05:42And they'll definitely say two games is too small of a sample size.
05:45And that's the other part of this.
05:47I think it's too tiny for them to go out and say, we've done our due diligence in figuring
05:54out if 2020 Deshaun exists in there or not.
05:57I just think it's too small of a sample size for them to say that they legitimately checked
06:01that box off.
06:01Whether I agree with it or not isn't the point.
06:04The point is what I think the Browns will do.
06:05And I don't think the Browns will say we're satisfied.
06:082-1-6-4-7-4-00-9-2.
06:12Joe Thomas says Deshaun Watson has two weeks.
06:16Are you in agreement with that?
06:18Tony in Columbia Station, welcome to the show.
06:20Hey, fellas.
06:21Hope you're having a good day.
06:22You too, buddy.
06:22What you got for us?
06:24Hey, okay.
06:24So Deshaun Watson, he's a starting quarterback because every decision the Browns have made
06:30since the end of last year, they are going after a top five draft pick in next year's
06:35draft.
06:35There's two and a half billion dollars obviously being spent on a new facility in Berea.
06:41And what do you need to have that business investment pay off maximally?
06:45You got to find the quarterback.
06:47So the Browns, they can't mess around.
06:49They've got to get a top five pick.
06:51And Watson gives us the best chance to make that happen.
06:54So I think the only thing I would say, and I thank you for the call.
06:58If they were tanking, and I'm only addressing this because it seemed like he was pointing
07:03to the T word.
07:03Can I get a ruling from the Russian judge?
07:05Mark Hatch.
07:05My point is, my point is I'm not going to advocate for tanking.
07:08You put yourself a ban on tanking and then now discussing tanking.
07:11This is in the purpose of science all out.
07:14Yeah, this is, thank you very much.
07:15This is to shoot down the tanking narrative, not to prop it up.
07:19See, I did with my hands.
07:20Tanking is tanking.
07:21But the point is, if the Browns were tanking, they wouldn't have done a lot of the things.
07:26They wouldn't have signed Derek Barnett for a $5.5 million contract.
07:29They wouldn't have been as aggressive to make the rest of the roster as good as it is.
07:34They're still looking for upgrades on this roster as well.
07:37They would allow the bottom to fall out of this.
07:41And also, guys, they can be a seven-win team, get the 15th pick, and still be in range to
07:47trade up for one of the top three, four, or five quarterbacks in this draft.
07:52Yeah, so we'll see.
07:53We'll see how it plays out.
07:55Tanking.
07:55How about it?
07:56Catch the fever.
07:58No.
07:59No fever.
07:59Catch the fever.
08:00No, get some penicillin.
08:01Get that fever.
08:02Flush it out of your system.
08:04Like it's college all over again.
08:06Joe in Bellevue, you got about 45 seconds, buddies.
08:09What you got for us?
08:11Yeah, you mentioned tanking.
08:12Listen, I don't think the Browns are tanking by any means.
08:15But when you sit back and you look at the whole roster, Deshaun Watson, if he wasn't
08:20going to start, he was never going to see the field this year.
08:22It's the better option to start him and bring Storrin later.
08:26I truly believe that Andrew Barry and the Haslams and Monk sat down and said, listen, I don't
08:32have the quarterback this year.
08:33We don't have it.
08:34We're not going to win.
08:35We're not a playoff team right now.
08:37Back to what Tony said, the draft picks and everything.
08:39I think that we're just building up to knowing what's going to happen.
08:44We're not a seven-win team.
08:46Unfortunately, as much as I hate to say that, that's the truth.
08:50Joe, when they win their seventh game this year, I expect your apology, Cole.
08:55You absolutely will.
08:57You absolutely will.
08:58Joe in Bellevue there.
09:00I think they're too talented to be a three-win team or a four-win team.
09:04I do.
09:05And I think I know how much the quarterback matters every year.
09:10There's three, four, five teams that are in the 500-win range that have below average
09:16or worse than that quarterback play.
09:18Now, again, I don't think Deshaun can get there.
09:20I think when it comes to Deshaun, I think Deshaun will continue to be the worst quarterback
09:25in the NFL because that's all he's been.
09:27And I think now he's mentally broken and physically broken and just no good at this anymore.
09:33So the game, I think, has passed him by.
09:35But if you get 14 games of Shador, I do think Shador can at least get to,
09:40hey, do you look like an NFL quarterback?
09:42I think the starters are good.
09:44I got worries about the depth, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
09:48I think that's every team in the NFL, though.
09:49No, but I also don't know what the offensive line is either.
09:51And because I don't know what the offensive line is, I don't really know what Judkins is going to be.
09:55There's a left tackle, there's a left guard, there's a center, there's a right guard, and a right tackle.
10:01Okay.
10:02Well, you said you didn't know what it was going to be.
10:03That's what it's going to be.
10:04You knew what I meant.
10:05I know.
10:05I did.
10:06I know.
10:06I'm just having fun here.
