00:00we head out to the wise heart right we make it right call Kyle Wright hotline and welcome on
00:04Brown's analyst Nathan Segura Nathan welcome back good to be back with you guys how are you doing
00:11uh we're doing all right here uh I will tell you this is not a this is not a Brown
00:16centric thing
00:16JP and I were talking earlier we get to the point where there's nothing left to do but football
00:22and then the NFL makes us wait for two weeks for football I find that a little bit annoying from
00:27the NFL league office I don't know where you stand on that I want me some football now
00:32I'm with you this feels and I know it's just the way the calendar falls this year but a bizarrely
00:39long off season I know got a little bit of a later start than usual but it certainly doesn't feel
00:42like it now I am with you and you know this year for the first time in years it's not
00:47like we had
00:47a week at the Greenbrier it's not like we went to Carolina or Philly for joint practices it's just
00:53been a long time I think before we got the season go so I'm with you I wish the first
00:57game was this
00:57weekend now that we are in agreement let's start with a bold spot here do you have and it can
01:02be
01:02pretty generic pretty big picture very uh very drilled down I don't really care I just wanted
01:08to be bold do you have a bold prediction uh about the Browns this year I think it's bold it's
01:16just I
01:16think we're gonna be fun to watch I really do I think the young skill talent on this team is
01:20real
01:21and so I just think that if we're too often in in the recent past it's you know when we've
01:26gotten
01:26the ball on offense it's kind of been like I don't know what's going to happen here I don't
01:30think that's going to be the case I think it's going to be fun to watch so that's my bold
01:33prediction
01:34is just that we will be a significantly more explosive and fun to watch offense than we have
01:38been in quite some time all right Nathan a lot of people listening today are finding out the news
01:43about Luke Foria and him not even making the practice squad uh what was your take on again not
01:48just making you know not making the 53-man roster but not making the practice squad as well
01:54I was disappointed for him that he didn't make the 53-man roster I was disappointed for him that
01:58nobody around the league claimed him either I thought that you know he certainly put forth
02:02good enough tape obviously the league doesn't agree with that I think it's also it's very hard
02:08you know to be a fifth or a sixth receiver which is what you probably would be if you were
02:12claimed
02:12off of waivers or if you made the Browns roster when you're you're not a special teams contributor
02:16and so I think unfortunately for him that's where they got he got cut Malachi Corley plays special
02:22teams Tylan Wallace is a special teams core special teams player and that's what happened to
02:26Corey certainly I think he's good enough all he does is make plays he is a great kid I love
02:31getting
02:31to know him I loved when I got to interview him I love the success he had almost getting the
02:34hat
02:34trick in that last preseason game I don't think that he didn't make our practice squad I think it's
02:39one of those things that after a certain period of time right where it just hasn't worked out
02:46there's nothing more that you can do here you say why don't you go get an opportunity somewhere else
02:50and I'm very curious to see where he does sign and I hope he signs in a place where you
02:54know he does
02:54have an opportunity to get on a 53-man roster great kid great story and certainly want him to have
02:59success it's just it's really hard in the NFL you know when you are not one of the top three
03:05or four
03:05receivers on your team and I'm not saying he can't be that someday but when you aren't a core special
03:11teams guy it just makes it very hard because you know these rosters are harder to make than ever
03:16and special teams is a big reason why because if you're not you're at you're a pure starter you've
03:22got to be a special teams guy all right Nathan it seems like none of us can agree on the
03:28leash that
03:28Deshaun has so I actually want to focus though on like the threshold because I thought I got first
03:34preseason game he cleared the respectability threshold in a way that I thought was important
03:41and I think that helped him in the pursuit of the starting job so whether it's two games four
03:47games eight games 17 games what's the threshold of play that Deshaun needs to clear early to have
03:55some momentum to to be able to keep this job for you know extended stay yeah I think it's it's
04:01simple
04:02I think that the Browns have to be winning and I think that he needs to be playing well so
04:06what is
04:06playing well look like I completion percentage run the operation well you know throwing for
04:11good amount of good amount of yardage throwing for more touchdowns certainly at least a two to one
04:16ratio touchdowns to interceptions so I think that's kind of what you're looking for ultimately it comes
04:21down to is he playing winning football in winning moments and that's kind of how the NFL is right a
04:26lot
04:26of these games will come down to three four or five plays or one particular drive in the fourth
04:32quarter can he do what he needs to do in those moments to lead the Browns the wins if he
04:37does
04:37you know if the Browns go down to Florida on the road and come back one and one and he's
04:42played well
04:43he's going to keep starting I think it's just that simple anybody who's a starting quarterback in a
04:48situation like this it was the same for us last year you want to execute at a high level you
04:54want
04:54to produce winning football that's how you keep your job and I think that's the onus and that's kind of
04:59the onus on Deshaun Watson to remain the starter here and he should be playing free this is a
05:04chance to resurrect his career that I don't think anybody certainly thought was possible a year ago
05:10at this time like the notion that Deshaun Watson would be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland
05:13Browns in 2026 that wasn't possible he knows that so he should go out there play free rip it and
05:19put
05:19his best foot forward and let it the chips fall where they may but if he plays good football this
05:24offense is scoring points we're scoring in the 20s or 20 plus every week he's moving the football
05:29up and down the field he's taking care of it he's executing it in high leverage situations there's
05:33no reason why this team can't win and there's no reason why he can't keep that starting job if he
05:38doesn't vote then I think it changes all right Nathan tell us a little about Toriano Pride Jr.
05:44He was one of these very heralded coming out of high school and incredibly fast players that the
05:50Brown just liked while watching against the Bills and some of the joint practices yeah Todd
05:56Munkin caught Todd's eye in the joint practice Andrew Barry's as well and they knew that that was
05:59somebody they'd have their eye on if there was an opportunity for him to become available he had
06:04the second fastest 40 time of a defensive player at the combine this year so yes he is fast and
06:09now
06:09you hope that when you bring somebody with that kind of clay and you mentioned he was a number eight
06:13recruit I think in his state coming out that year was a top you know I think 70 recruit in
06:18the
06:18country played on a high school team with Luther Burden he is a very talented guy worked out with
06:25Kyron Williams in high school and so now you hope to take that those talents those raw things that
06:31didn't maybe translate well enough into being a corner that the Bills would keep and say okay we
06:36need help on the outside this guy certainly fits that bill now we give him to Brandon Lynch who's one
06:41of the great teachers and technicians at the defensive back position can he get the best out of that very
06:47good skill set at that speed and we're looking for guys on the outside I think that's been very very
06:53clear all off season this gives you another opportunity along with Makai Blackman who's
06:57come in to try to address the depth clearly the Browns knew it wasn't good enough they bring in two
07:01guys here out of their six one last Thursday and one today Nathan in spite of winning five games last
07:08year good enough for the sixth pick in spite of having in multiple ways the one of the easier
07:14schedules in the NFL this year and a pretty aggressive off season not just in the draft but
07:20certainly in free agency and trade there's still people out there that keep bringing up the t-word
07:25with the Browns tanking David Carr former NFL quarterback saying he thinks the Browns are tanking
07:30what do you say to the people who still look at the Browns and lump them in with a team
07:34like Miami who
07:35is apparently tanking like holy crap are they tanking what do you say to those people who still think
07:42the Browns and the t-word go together this year I mean people are entitled to their opinions I
07:50certainly know that they are not Todd Munkin has not waited this whole time to become a head coach
07:56in the NFL to try to knowingly lose that's to me what tanking is right it's knowingly and willingly
08:02trying to lose I don't think they're doing that at all Jeff Halfley the head coach who's a great guy
08:08was with the Browns with Ohio State head coach of Boston College is now the head coach of Miami so
08:12we're not even measuring successes here in wins and losses we're measuring in terms of development
08:16that is an organization that is clearly not focused on winning and losing they're focused on
08:20developing some young players they claim seven guys I mean they just turned over seven of their 53
08:27right now which is a wild that's a wild bumper to me at the cut down day
08:35as they get going there the Browns have been aggressive in adding talented players
08:40train miles Garrett it was only picks you say okay well that's a sign that they're no but they
08:45insisted on getting Jared Burst back this is a team that wants to win I think that their their goal
08:51for
08:51this year is to win as many games they can and find out if they have in-house in terms
08:56of people under
08:57contract a solution at the quarterback position and if they don't they're going to be well positioned to
09:01go get one in 2027 but no they certainly are not taking their the Browns are honestly they're too
09:06talented they have too many guys with talent on both sides of the ball I think to be a team
09:11like
09:12what Miami is maybe doing where they have kind of divested themselves of everybody other than maybe a
09:18Devon Achan who is going to be you know and at one point he said hey I've got to get
09:21out of here
09:21but no that is certainly not what they are trying to do and and no I nobody in the all
09:26anybody talks
09:27about in that building is winning that's all this is all about is winning Nathan we talked a little
09:32bit today about uh Todd Munkin's comments from earlier about what to do with Jerry Judy and I
09:37won't exclusively be the x-y receiver and the role is going to just look a little bit different this
09:41year for Judy than maybe in the past couple years how do you envision the role for Jerry Judy being
09:46this
09:46year I think it means you know Denzel Boston's more of a prototypical x and it's a lot of those
09:51three by one formations that's where Denzel Boston's going to be Jerry Judy is you know a pro bowler
09:56still has been very productive in this league and I think Todd Munkin likes him moving at different
10:01spots and getting him on the move pre-snap as well he thinks that's where Jerry Judy is really good
10:06and I think you're just going to see more of that with him this year he certainly is is on
10:11target to
10:12play a very big role for the Cleveland Browns I think when you're an 11 personnel of course Isaiah
10:16Bond is going to work in as well but I think it's predominantly going to be Boston Concepcion and Jerry
10:23Judy out there and 11 personnel so he's going to I think he's going to have a big year I
10:26think Casey
10:27Concepcion when it's all said and done is going to end up being this team's you know top producer at
10:31the wide receiver position and then we'll just see you know as Boston and Jerry Judy slot in there
10:35you've got Harold Fan you've got twin John Judkins that's what's fun about this you've got some real
10:39talent on offense so you mentioned the name there uh I'm I know they're a little thin behind Harold
10:45Fan and Jr but he was so good as a rookie in spite of the quarterback play around him
10:51what should your two expectations be for uh former Bowling Green tight end Harold Fan and Jr
10:58you know I don't think he's going to lead the team in receptions and receiving yards and receiving
11:02touchdowns as he did a year ago because the talent around him is significantly better but I think
11:07Harold Fan and you know it you want to see him improve his blocking become a complete tight end and
11:14then continue to be incredibly productive as a pass catcher I think you know Harold Fan has a chance
11:18you know to be a pro bowler I think he has a chance to elevate his game continue his ascension
11:23and I
11:24think that's what everybody in the building is certainly hopeful for and with him because he is
11:28just such a talented guy and you want to see that talent continue to blossom but yeah there's no doubt
11:33they're very high expectations for Harold Fan and internally uh with the Cleveland Browns.
11:37Nathan it's great to have you back you being back on this show at five o'clock means that football
