The director behind 'Clair Obscur: Expedition 33' weighs in on the AI debate, expressing fears that creating games from prompts could take away the 'joy of creating' for developers.
Transcript
00:00Guillaume Broche, the lead developer behind last year's hugely acclaimed RPG, Claire Obscure Expedition 33,
00:05reckons we'll one day be able to prompt an entire game into existence.
00:09But that's a theoretical future that's scary for him and many other developers.
00:12Asked about generative AI in the game space during a chat on Kenbini's Video Game Club show,
00:17Broche clarified that his studio, Sandfall Interactive, isn't using the tech for any creative work.
00:22When it comes to administrative duties and coding, Broche says it depends,
00:26but generating anything else feels like it takes away from the joy of creating things.
00:30Sandfall Interactive found itself in hot water last year when AI-generated textures were found in the final game.
00:36The developers swiftly removed the assets in question and explained they were placeholders not intended for release,
00:41though the mishap did lead to at least two of its Game of the Year awards being revoked.
00:44It sounds like the studio's next game won't be toying around with the tech in the same way.
00:48I think everyone's a little scared though, but the road ahead of how things might turn out.
00:52Broche continues,
00:53With video games, we're still somewhat protected because, technically speaking, it's a different ballgame.
00:58But I think the day will come when we'll be able to churn out a game in five seconds with
01:02a prompt.
01:03Will it be a good game?
01:04I hope not.
01:05But I think everyone's asking themselves the same question, and admitting it's a little scary.
01:09Would you want to play a game made entirely by AI?
01:11Bye.
