00:06welcome to mojo plays and today we're putting the 10 best n64 games beside the 10 best ps1 games
00:13and letting you all decide who has the best lineup i'm not deciding because to be honest i'm scared
00:17of the comments so i'm just presenting the facts and i'll let you all fight it out these are the
00:2110 best n64 vs 10 best ps1 games let's go before we continue we publish content all week long so
00:28be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get notified of our latest videos super smash bros
00:42super smash bros started with a wonderfully silly idea grab a bunch of nintendo characters who had
00:47absolutely no reason to punch each other and make them punch each other mario link kirby pikachu fox
00:53ness captain falcon and others were suddenly sharing stages and knocking one another into
00:58the sky it was awesome more awesome than you could imagine today what began as a fairly small
01:03side project quickly became a massive success largely because the concept was just so much fun
01:09future games turned the roster into a gigantic gaming crossover eventually bringing in outsiders like
01:15solid snake even so the n64 original still works surprisingly well especially when four players
01:21are crammed around one television pushing each other and knocking controllers out of each other's hands
01:35vagrant story
01:44vagrant story is the kind of ps1 game that throws a mountain of ideas at you and somehow keeps the
01:49whole
01:50standing directed by yasumi matsuna it mixes political drama ancient history and dark fantasy
01:55with an absurdly detailed combat system which i know all sounds kind of boring but it's actually
01:59really goddamn good weapons can be built for specific enemy types armor can be customized special
02:04attacks need careful timing and puzzles regularly interrupt the dungeon crawling even basic fights demand
02:10attention while the bosses can be absolutely brutal if you walk in unprepared this was a recipe for a
02:16complete disaster potentially but everything clicks together really really well it released too late
02:21in the ps1's life cycle to be final fantasy 7 but it is just as good
02:37paper mario
02:42paper mario wins you over almost immediately with how cheerful and inviting everything feels the paper
02:48cutout art style still looks great the soundtrack is full of playful little tunes and the turn-based
02:53combat keeps you involved instead of letting you switch your brain off the story is hardly
02:57revolutionary but the cast has enough personality to carry it it may not have the same weird magic as
03:03super mario rpg but on an n64 desperately short on rpgs it was a huge treat chapter 2 the mystery
03:10of dry dry
03:11ruins is a standout especially with para carry tagging along while you explore temples solve puzzles and
03:16basically let mario rival tomb raider
03:23silent hill
03:33few playstation games could make an empty street feel as threatening as silent hill rather than relying entirely on monsters
03:40jumping out every five minutes it builds fear through fog strange noises unsettling environments and the constant feeling
03:46that something's following you silent hill 2 would later receive much more praise but the original deserves enormous credit for
03:52establishing the identity of silent hill
03:54its town feels mysterious hostile and almost impossible to understand which only makes exploring it more uncomfortable at a time
04:01when horror games were still finding their feet on consoles
04:04silent hill showed how good classic horror games are despite looking blocky and sometimes a little blurry
04:14starfox 64
04:22open wing
04:28jumping back to nintendo let's go to space starfox 64 takes everything the original was aiming for and makes it
04:35feel faster smoother and far more confident
04:37andros is back causing trouble in the lilac system so fox mcleod falco peppy and slippy jump into their r
04:44wings to deal with him again
04:45the big improvement is how polished the 3d shooting feels with more intense battles and better controls over the action
04:52it also introduced proper voice acting giving us endlessly quotable lines like do a barrel roll whether we wanted them
04:57permanently stuck in our heads or not
04:59we didn't god damn it
05:01you're not so tough
05:04you're not as tough as i thought
05:06tomb raider
05:17tomb raider works because so much of the adventure feels strangely lonely
05:21lara croft spends huge stretches exploring enormous ruins with little more than distant animal noises and the occasional thing trying
05:28to kill her
05:28sometimes that means wolves and sometimes that means bears
05:31sometimes it means dinosaurs because apparently ancient tombs keep things cool for centuries
05:35the levels were the real star though packed with huge chambers and clever platforming hidden paths and environments that felt
05:41genuinely mysterious
05:42lara became one of gaming's biggest icons and when that shotgun goes off it sounds like somebody just fired a
05:48cannon inside your living room
05:49rocked my ears
05:50lara rocked my world
06:08Conker's bad fur day looks like another colorful n64 platformer right up until the jokes start arriving
06:13Conker wakes up after a massive night out
06:16realizes he has absolutely no idea where he is and spends the rest of the game trying to stumble back
06:20home through increasingly ridiculous situations
06:22i know this sounds like a raunchy sony game but i promise it's nintendo
06:26along the way there are drunken scarecrows
06:28rude bees a giant singing pile of poo and enough filthy humor to make it stand apart from almost everything
06:34else on the console
06:35under all that chaos there is a genuinely fantastic platformer aimed at players who already know the genre
06:41stupid f***er all i do all day is try to suck this stupid f***ing problem with an asshole i f***ing
06:46hate that f***er
06:47anyway
06:48Gran Turismo 2
06:56Gran Turismo 2 took an already successful racing formula and absolutely stuffed it with content
07:02the original Gran Turismo may have sold more copies on the playstation but plenty of fans still prefer the sequel
07:07because it simply gives you more to do
07:10there are hundreds of cars to collect
07:12loads of events to enter and a progression system that makes every new purchase feel earned
07:16it still takes its driving seriously with the realistic handling and attention to detail the series became known for
07:22but it never forgets to actually be fun
07:35banjo kazooie
07:40the playstation liked experimenting while the n64 locked down how to make a perfect platformer
07:47if you had both consoles you'd be in heaven
07:49focusing on the n64 again banjo kazooie gives you one of gaming's strangest rescue teams
07:54a laid-back bear and an extremely loud bird living in his backpack
07:58their mission is to save banjo's sister tootie from gruntilda a witch who plans to steal her beauty for herself
08:05it is a ridiculous setup but that fits perfectly with rare sense of humor
08:09the real strength comes from the worlds themselves which are packed with collectibles
08:13puzzles secrets memorable characters and plenty of reasons to poke around every corner
08:18it's replayable and cozy perfect for a kid of the 90s or an adult of the 2020s
08:23me
08:29Tekken 3
08:34Tekken 3 is one of those fighting games that made owning a playstation feel completely justified
08:38the series already had a strong foundation but this entry tightened everything up with faster movement
08:43smoother combat and a huge roster filled with memorable fighters
08:47better still the console version was not simply a watered-down arcade port
08:50it added extra characters like gon and dr boskanovich
08:53plus wonderfully strange side modes such as tekken force and tekken ball
08:57that gave players plenty to do when nobody else was around to fight
09:00me and my buddies still do a yearly tekken 3 tournament
09:03it's unreal and it's super nerdy
09:09Mario Kart 64
09:16Mario Kart 64 may not be the series at its absolute best anymore but it still knows exactly how to
09:22ruin a perfectly good friendship
09:23the tracks are packed with memorable moments from gambling on the Koopa Troopa Beach shortcut
09:27to barely surviving Bowser's castle or sailing over the huge jump in Royal Raceway
09:31Banshee Boardwalk remains pure panic especially when someone is breathing down your neck with a red shell
09:36the handling can feel a little slippery compared with the newer entries
09:39but multiplayer still carries the game beautifully
09:42battle mode is where things really shine
09:44with block fort, big donut and skyscraper turning four player matches into total chaos
09:49this game filled my childhood with some of my favourite gaming memories
10:00Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
10:02Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 arrived at exactly the right time
10:11when skateboarding culture was everywhere and the PlayStation was sitting in millions of homes
10:16plenty of skating games tried to cash in on that moment
10:19but this was the one that completely nailed it
10:21Neversoft gave players huge levels to explore
10:24ridiculous trick possibilities and controls that were easy to understand
10:27without making the game feel shallow
10:29you could spend hours chasing high scores
10:31finding gaps, completing objectives
10:33or just seeing how badly you could destroy Tony Hawk's knees
10:35although it later appeared on the N64
10:37the PS1 version was where the game really exploded
10:46Gold Knight 007
10:52there was absolutely no reason for a licensed James Bond game on the N64 to be this good
10:58yet Gold Knight 007 somehow became one of the console's defining releases
11:02the single player campaign turned familiar moments from the film into open-ended missions
11:06but with objectives, stealth, gadgets and plenty of guards
11:09reacted a little too slowly to being shot
11:12then there was the multiplayer
11:14oh boy the multiplayer
11:15which completely took over living rooms
11:17four player split-screen matches on maps like Facility
11:20became instant chaos
11:22especially once someone picked Oddjob and ruined everyone's afternoon
11:24the controls have definitely aged
11:27but the game's influence has not
11:38when you take everything that works in your first game and build upon it
11:42you're gonna make gold
11:43in Resident Evil 2
11:45instead of being trapped inside one mansion
11:47Leon and Claire have to survive a city
11:49that has already gone spectacularly wrong
11:51ammo is limited, healing items matter
11:53puzzles break up the panic
11:54and even a single zombie can become a problem
11:56if you waste too many bullets
11:58the police station remains one of horror gaming's most memorable locations
12:01but the adventure constantly expands beyond it
12:04the 2019 remake may be the version newer players know best
12:07yet the PS1 original still holds enormous importance
12:10I played it after enjoying the remake so much
12:12and it still holds up you guys
12:23The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask
12:25The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask
12:36wastes no time making things uncomfortable
12:38Link leaves Hyrule behind
12:40and ends up in Termina
12:41a strange world living under the shadow
12:43of a gigantic moon that's slowly falling towards the ground
12:46everything revolves around a repeating three day cycle
12:49forcing you to learn routines, solve problems
12:51and eventually reset time with the Song of Time
12:54before everything gets flattened
12:55that mechanic gives the game a completely different rhythm
12:58from Ocarina of Time
12:59because progress often comes from knowing exactly where to be
13:02and when
13:03the darker mood can feel intimidating at first
13:05but it's also what makes the adventure so freaking cool
13:16Castlevania Symphony of the Night
13:24Castlevania Symphony of the Night showed up on a console
13:26obsessed with 3D graphics
13:27and casually reminded everyone that 2D games were doing just fine
13:31instead of simply sending players through another linear castle
13:34it opened Dracula's home into a huge interconnected maze
13:37packed with secrets, upgrades, bosses and areas
13:40you could completely miss
13:41the gothic artwork still looks fantastic
13:44the soundtrack is brilliant
13:45and exploring the castle remains dangerously easy to lose hours in
13:48more importantly it completely changed what Castlevania could be
13:51blending action platforming with RPG style progression
13:54and open exploration
13:55it's also kind of cool that Sony stole this property from Nintendo
13:59backstabbing is the best
14:05Super Mario 64
14:12Peach invites Mario over for cake
14:15which sounds lovely
14:15until he arrives and discovers Bowser has turned the entire castle into a giant hostage situation
14:20from there Super Mario 64
14:22sends players diving through magical paintings into open 3D worlds
14:25packed with power stars, secrets, shortcuts and strange little challenges
14:29at the time simply running around these places felt revolutionary
14:32Mario could jump, flip, climb, swim, crawl
14:36and explore with the freedom the series had never really offered before
14:39each level also had its own identity
14:41from snowy mountains to haunted mansions
14:44it was groundbreaking at the time
14:46and really, truly still holds up today
14:48with or without nostalgia
14:55Final Fantasy 7
15:01Before it became one of PlayStation's defining games
15:04Final Fantasy 7 was originally being planned for the N64
15:07Yoink!
15:08Moving to Sony's console changed everything
15:10CD-ROM storage gave Square far more room for pre-rendered backgrounds
15:14linked the cutscenes, huge locations
15:15and the kind of cinematic presentation
15:17that simply would not have fit comfortably on a cartridge
15:20The result was a JRPG that felt enormous in 1997
15:24and still carries that reputation today
15:26Between its memorable cast, material system
15:28massive amount of optional content
15:30and one particular story moment
15:32nobody has ever stopped talking about
15:34Final Fantasy 7 became bigger than the series itself
15:37It helped push JRPGs into the mainstream
15:39and remains one of the PS1's best releases
15:45The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
15:53I cannot think of another game
15:55that completely swallowed and continues to swallow my free time
15:58like The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
16:01In 1998, Hyrule felt enormous, mysterious
16:04and somehow real enough that being told to go outside
16:07genuinely felt like an interruption and an insult
16:09Some parts have aged, of course
16:11The inventory's a bit clunky
16:13Combat is a little simple
16:14and the world feels a little smaller now as well
16:17but the story still hits incredibly hard
16:19Watching Link grow from a child into an adult
16:22and seeing familiar places ruined
16:24gives the adventure a sadness
16:26that sticks with you
16:27Play a song from the soundtrack
16:29and I will get emotional
16:30It's weird
16:36Metal Gear Solid
16:46Of course, I put this in first place
16:48Couldn't help myself
16:49Eight years after the series had last appeared
16:52Metal Gear Solid returned
16:53and suddenly made video games feel a lot closer to movies
16:56Hideo Kojima filled Shadow Moses with lengthy conversations
16:59dramatic camera work
17:01strong voice acting
17:02memorable villains
17:03and enough plot twists
17:04to keep everyone guessing what was actually happening
17:06Thankfully, it was not just a very long film
17:09with the occasional button prompts
17:10Sneaking past guards
17:11watching patrol routes
17:12hiding in boxes
17:13and avoiding detection
17:14made stealth feel exciting
17:16in a way few games had managed before
17:18It's an incredible game
17:19that needs a remake
