00:00I can't remember, honestly, being that upset watching one of my teams in a particular moment.
00:08An absolute gut-wrenching dagger to not only the game, of course, but to, at the very least, the early
00:18part of this season, perhaps the entire season.
00:20And, of course, conversation from some about whether or not the team should start to plan as if Jaden Daniels
00:29might not be worth it moving forward.
00:32Because ability is important, and there's no doubt he has that, but it's always tied to, in the NFL and
00:42in sports in general, availability.
00:45And he hasn't been available enough since his rookie season.
00:50I'd say good morning, but it really isn't a good morning.
00:55Max is here with me.
00:57Ben is going to jump on here in the first hour of the show because he is catching a flight
01:03from Dallas.
01:04We'll find out from Ben what he knows.
01:07At this point, imaging, MRI seems to be what's coming today back here after they got back late last night.
01:17Dan Quinn holds his Monday press conference at 3 p.m. with the Beat Report reporter group.
01:25Is it possible we get a Pellisaro or a Rappaport or a Schefter report from whatever the MRI says before
01:35then?
01:35And, yes, is it possible also that Quinn tells us that they don't have the results yet and they'll let
01:42everybody know on Wednesday when they reconvene for the first day of prep for the Seattle game on Sunday?
01:51I guess that's possible.
01:52I can't believe that we're not going to learn something before then.
01:57But for those that missed it, and I'm assuming none of you did if you're listening to this show,
02:05Jaden Daniels injured on the final play of the first half with an elbow dislocation similar to the one that
02:14he had last year at the end of the game against Seattle
02:17when he should not have been on the field running the play that he ran.
02:21Carted off the field, towel overhead.
02:25Quinn did say in the postgame press conference that it was not a fracture, which is good news.
02:32You're getting all the Internet doctors now to weigh in on the – I have not heard this, by the
02:39way.
02:40All of the supposed discussion that was taking place last year about surgery as an option.
02:47Did I hear that as a theme to the post-Seattle injury?
02:52I didn't.
02:53I mean, I may have heard it once or twice.
02:55But the Internet doctors now saying, like I said, should have gotten surgery.
03:01I will just tell you that I did talk with a very good friend of mine who is an orthopedic
03:06surgeon in town.
03:07He's performed a couple of back surgeries on yours truly.
03:11And he said the following.
03:13He said it's extremely rare to have a re-dislocation after non-operative care, about a 1% to 2
03:22% chance.
03:24There can be residual instability, but surgery is rare for elbow dislocations.
03:32So I don't know what to believe.
03:34I'll go with my friend Dr. Mike Goldsmith from Summit Orthopedics in Bethesda on that one.
03:42But we're going to hear a lot from everybody.
03:45And the team's going to have to make the call based on whatever the MRI says.
03:50And the team doctors and outside team doctors, et cetera, say, look, the bottom line is, you know,
03:57a game and a half into this season and the season's chance for something good to happen,
04:07for a team to be competitive and in the hunt and for us to have meaningful football
04:13when we get into November and beyond, took a major hit yesterday.
04:18The chances of the team having that kind of a season without him are significantly less.
04:28Marcus Mariota is a good veteran, solid backup quarterback in the league, able to functionally
04:37run an NFL offense, certainly for a short stretch, but any more than a short stretch if he's got
04:45to play the significant majority of the season, you're not going to be a winning team.
04:52And I like Marcus Mariota.
04:54I think he did a good job yesterday coming in.
04:58He did a decent job last year as a relief quarterback.
05:01He's no Jaden Daniels.
05:05And what was so sickening in the moment when you saw that elbow dislocated is how high of
05:15a level he had played at, how much he reminded everybody after the final two drives in Philadelphia
05:23as he really got his season going in week one after not playing football for a long period
05:28of time, just an absolute show he put on in the first half.
05:36And let me just real quickly, and I don't want this to wait any longer.
05:41I did not have any issue at all with Dan Quinn going for the last play on third and goal
05:50at
05:50the one with three seconds to go.
05:52Now, if he had opted for the field goal, I wouldn't have had a problem with that.
05:55I felt like when they got to the one with 12 seconds to go, I did feel like they got
06:03to
06:03get a touchdown.
06:04They should get a touchdown.
06:07Dallas is reeling in the midst of this long drive, the third straight that Washington had
06:12moved it on the Cowboys.
06:14Cowboys had defensive players dropping like flies, had a couple that didn't play coming into
06:19the game, Washington making, Jaden Daniels putting on an exhibition of throwing, of eluding
06:28pass rush and breaking backs for the defensive group on scrambles, by the way, doing a phenomenal
06:35job protecting himself with slides at the end of runs.
06:38I had no issue in the moment with Quinn deciding that we need a touchdown here because I had just
06:48watched 29 minutes and 57 seconds of the first half where it was very obvious that touchdowns were
06:55field goals were not likely going to do it.
06:59You were going to need touchdowns.
07:01Not to mention the fact that Dallas was gassed a bit in the midst of a long drive, the third
07:06straight, where they couldn't get off the field against Washington.
07:11I didn't have a problem.
07:12If they felt like the context of the situation of getting the ball back to start the second
07:17half and we want a two for one, we want to get the three, we want to start the second
07:21half down 17-13 and get down the field and take the lead and just be in a back and
07:26forth
07:26shootout, which is what the game was kind of setting up to be.
07:31That's fine too, but I didn't have a problem.
07:34I mean, Dan Quinn did not cause the injury to Jaden Daniels.
07:40The absurdity of some of you in the moment.
07:43Like, I was emotional too.
07:44Don't get me wrong.
07:46I was just gutted in that moment when I saw the replay and I saw the elbow.
07:53But to blame it on Dan Quinn?
07:56Come on.
07:57You guys are better than that.
08:00If you thought they should have kicked a field goal, I don't have a problem with that.
08:03I think it's very debatable, but it wasn't a slam dunk.
08:07Either way, it was really kind of a, do we have a play?
08:11Do we feel good about it?
08:13Is this a game that, you know, kicking field goals here at the one yard line is going to
08:19come back to haunt us?
08:21I mean, imagine they kicked the field goal and in the second half, you know, they have
08:26to kick another field goal.
08:27They're down eight and everybody's saying, are you kidding me?
08:30Because you know, that would have been the case too.
08:32With many saying, you know, in calling Quinn, man, you know, old Dan in that 24 season going
08:39for it, he doesn't have the stones anymore.
08:41I had no issue at all.
08:44In fact, first and goal at the one with 12 seconds to go, I'm like, got to get a touchdown
08:49here.
08:49If it comes down to one play, you probably still need to do it.
08:53And I really thought they would get it done.
08:56You know, I've gone back.
08:58I looked at the first two plays on the all 22, just right before the show, the second
09:03and goal from the one with eight seconds to go.
09:06He does have Bates, but he's also in that mode of can't take a sack because the half ends
09:13and Bates kind of came open and there was a little bit of, you know, of rush.
09:20Um, but he probably could have unloaded it quickly to Bates.
09:25Although if Bates had dropped it or whatever, we would have all screamed, why are you going
09:29to Bates?
09:30Like last week?
09:32Um, but I didn't have a problem with what they did, uh, in that spot.
09:39Sorry.
09:40I didn't, uh, you know, context is everything and you can say, oh, well, they didn't, you
09:46know, get it in on the first two tries and you know, the, the scenario around, you know,
09:51one play.
09:52And the thing about that one play is that's the play in which the defense has to defend
09:59pass and run.
10:01The play looked to me like a sprint option a bit.
10:05Uh, I don't think it was a swing pass to Rashad white.
10:09I think Jaden under center was going to come back hard on sort of a boot with perhaps, uh,
10:15Rashad white as a pitch option, probably scores with the way Jaden was running in that game.
10:24Um, and how gassed and how bad Dallas's defense was at that point.
10:30But of course it didn't happen.
10:33Chris Paul steps on, uh, you know, Jaden steps on Chris Paul's foot coming back, stumbles,
10:41puts the left arm down to try to stay up, elbow buckles, chucks the ball incomplete, underhanded.
10:48And a few seconds later, he's being carted off the field.
10:54I do have, you know, uh, a couple of thoughts about those last few plays, which I'll get to
10:59in my game take.
11:01Um, but that was agonizing.
11:04That is, you know, I was thinking about this, that if he had had a first half, like last
11:13week against Philly, where they were kind of struggling against a much better defense
11:19first game, the whole thing, uh, it would have been still for people like me who love
11:26Jaden Daniels and believe in Jaden Daniels to be an elite level talent, elite level talent.
11:32Um, it would, it wouldn't have phased me, but man, I can only hear had they not played
11:38well, some of the conversation about the injury, because many people would have just said, that's
11:43it.
11:44Got to make plans to draft a quarterback.
11:46This season's going to get tanked and you got to draft a quarterback in 2027.
11:51But the fact that he had essentially looked like vintage Jaden Daniels from 2024 until
12:00with the exception of the Traylon Burks miss deep still, uh, it was just the worst.
12:09So now we wait, we wait to hear the severity of it, what the plan is to deal with it,
12:16how
12:16long he's out for.
12:18Um, yeah, needless to say, he's going to miss some games, you know, I've heard he can play
12:25with a brace.
12:26It's not as throwing hand, uh, throwing arm and thank God it's not as throwing elbow
12:30because this is not on his non throwing elbow.
12:34This is not a career ending injury.
12:36It can't be, you know, the worst case would be some sort of surgery.
12:40I guess, I don't know.
12:42Um, it's if there's ligament damage, uh, no fracture, which is good.
12:47Uh, but it's not as throwing arm, but you certainly shouldn't have a guy that in trying
12:54to use his off hand to stay balanced and stay upright, there shouldn't be that risk that
13:02he's going to dislocate it.
13:03I mean, he could have done that tripping on something in his own home.
13:08Um, I mean, freak, not, not like, oh my God, he's putting himself at risk.
13:15He's doing it again.
13:16He's not getting down.
13:17He's taking big shots or somebody rolls back into the, you know, into his knee in the pocket.
13:23I mean, more quarterbacks get hurt in the pocket than outside of the pocket.
13:27And let's not forget, you know, he's not the only high level talent that gets injured
13:33a lot.
13:33Lamar's been injured a lot.
13:34Joe Burrow's been injured a lot.
13:36You don't get as much conversation about that in part because they've already established
13:41themselves as true superstars in the sport.
13:44And Jaden did it for one season and hasn't really been available to play football for
13:50any meaningful period of time since.
13:52It's the narrative, uh, from, uh, many about him being injury prone, despite the fact that
14:00his historical injury record did, did not suggest that that should be the narrative played 52
14:09of 54 college games, played all 20 his rookie season.
14:12Yes.
14:13He had a rib injury played through it.
14:17Um, last year was the aberration.
14:19But those that want to say, I saw the frame, I saw a guy that couldn't hold up.
14:26Yeah, that's true in, in that he did have a frame that looked, looked vulnerable, but
14:33that's not the injury.
14:34Like he didn't take a big shot.
14:37He didn't have a knee.
14:39He didn't have an ankle.
14:41He didn't have a shoulder.
14:45Two of the three injuries he's had here over the last season plus have been super freakish
14:55elbow dislocation.
14:56Now the Seattle game, I put that on the coaching staff absurd that he was a in the game.
15:02And if he was going to be in the game, he wasn't just handing the ball off or throwing
15:05quick bubble screens to run an RPO in the red zone in a condensed field.
15:11You, that was a possibility when the game was over.
15:16I mean, there's no way in hindsight, no way in hindsight after that Seattle game that that
15:23coaching staff didn't say, wow, we really effed up.
15:27I mean, can't run an RP, that wasn't a zone read.
15:31It was an RPO.
15:32Okay.
15:32Run pass option.
15:34Okay.
15:34So he's either going to hand it to the back or he's going to pull it and he's going to
15:38throw it.
15:39But on a condensed field, it just makes everything tighter and closer and puts the, uh, puts
15:47the pass option after he decides not to hand it, puts it into a potential pressure mode
15:54and he paid for it.
15:57Idiocy in the Seattle game yesterday.
16:01Complete flukish freakish Chris Paul stepping on.
16:06Um, yeah.
16:07Okay.
16:07Should he have been in shotgun?
16:08I don't know.
16:09They liked the play that they called.
16:11I mean, from what I can see, the play had a pretty good chance to work.
16:16Had that not happened.
16:21Painful stuff yesterday.
16:24Frickin game and a half into the season.
16:27And here we are, uh, with the quarterback down again, by the way, let me just mention that
16:35stupid ass flag football game that he participated in the Brady thing that was supposed to be
16:41in Saudi Arabia or UAE or wherever it was supposed to be.
16:46And then they had to pull it back here because of the war in Iran.
16:48I mean, how dumb was that?
16:52That they, I mean, I, I, I, I know for a fact, the organization was holding their breath,
16:58but given what we just saw in that game, how idiotic was it for him to play in that thing?
17:06That's on him.
17:08That's on his inner circle.
17:10That's on the team to a certain degree.
17:12I don't know if they could have prevented it.
17:14I understand the money he probably got for doing it.
17:18I don't begrudge any, any of these players that are trying to maximize their ability,
17:23but coming off the season, he came off last year.
17:26And what we just saw, can you imagine with him running around like a running back in that
17:32stupid ass flag football game?
17:34If he had done it then.
