03:00Psalm 48
03:02The Lord is great, and certainly worthy of praise in the city of our God, his holy hill.
03:10It is lofty and pleasing to look at, a source of joy to the whole earth.
03:16Mount Zion resembles the peaks of Zaphon.
03:19It is the city of the great King.
03:23God is in its fortresses.
03:25He reveals himself as its defender.
03:28For look, the kings assemble, they advance together.
03:33As soon as they see, they are shocked, they are terrified, they quickly retreat.
03:40Look at them shake uncontrollably, like a woman writhing in childbirth.
03:46With an east wind you shatter the large ships.
03:50We heard about God's mighty deeds, and now we have seen them, in the city of the Lord of Heaven's
03:57armies,
03:58in the city of our God.
04:00God makes it permanently secure.
04:04We reflect on your loyal love, O God, within your temple.
04:08The praise you receive, as far away as the ends of the earth, is worthy of your reputation, O God.
04:17You execute justice.
04:20Mount Zion rejoices.
04:22The towns of Judah are happy because of your acts of judgment.
04:28Walk around Zion.
04:30Encircle it.
04:31Count its towers.
04:33Consider its defences.
04:35Walk through its fortresses, so that you can tell the next generation about it.
04:40For God, our God, is our defender for ever.
04:45He guides us.
04:48Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
04:52As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be.
04:56World without end.
04:58Amen.
05:03Psalm 49
05:07Listen to this, all you nations.
05:10Pay attention, all you inhabitants of the world.
05:14Pay attention, all you people, both rich and poor.
05:18I will declare a wise saying.
05:21I will share my profound thoughts.
05:25I will learn a song that imparts wisdom.
05:28I will then sing my insightful song to the accompaniment of a harp.
05:35Why should I be afraid in times of trouble, when the sinful deeds of deceptive men threaten to overwhelm me?
05:43They trust in their wealth, and boast in their great riches.
05:48Certainly a man cannot rescue his brother.
05:51He cannot pay God an adequate ransom price.
05:55For the ransom price of a human life is too high, and people go to their final destiny.
06:02So that he might continue to live forever and not experience death.
06:08Surely one sees that even wise people die.
06:11Fools and spiritually insensitive people all pass away and leave their wealth to others.
06:20Their grave becomes their permanent residence, their eternal dwelling place.
06:25They name their lands after themselves, but despite their wealth, people do not last.
06:33They are like animals that perish.
06:36This is the destiny of fools and of those who approve of their philosophy.
06:42They will travel to Sheol like sheep, with death as their shepherd.
06:47The godly will rule over them when the day of vindication dawns.
06:53Sheol will consume their bodies, and they will no longer live in impressive houses.
06:59But God will rescue my life from the power of Sheol.
07:04Certainly he will pull me to safety.
07:08Do not be afraid when a man becomes rich and his wealth multiplies.
07:13For he will take nothing with him when he dies.
07:16His wealth will not follow him down into the grave.
07:21He pronounces this blessing on himself while he is alive.
07:26May men praise you, for you have done well.
07:31But he will join his ancestors, and they will never again see the light of day.
07:37Wealthy people do not understand.
07:40They are like animals that perish.
07:44Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
07:49As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be.
07:54World without end.
07:56Amen.
08:15God has destined us, not for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
08:23who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live in him.
08:32Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,
08:36who at this evening hour lay in the tomb,
08:39and so hallowed the grave, to be a bed of hope for all who put their trust in you.
08:46Give us such sorrow for our sins,
08:49which were the cause of your passion,
08:51that when our bodies lie in the dust,
08:55that when our bodies lie in the dust, our souls may live with you forever.
09:05God has destined us, not for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
09:13who died for us,
09:15so that whether we are awake or asleep,
09:17we may live in him.
09:22Lord Jesus Christ,
09:23Son of the living God,
09:25who at this evening hour lay in the tomb,
09:28and so hallowed the grave,
09:31to be a bed of hope for all who put their trust in you.
09:35Give us such sorrow for our sins,
09:39which were the cause of your passion,
09:41that when our bodies lie in the dust,
09:44our souls may live with you forever.
