00:00For the first time, you are on your screens, hear it directly from the captain on board.
00:05Captain Smith Mashar is telling us what precisely happened.
00:10Lying in a pool of blood, India today has accessed this confirmed video
00:14where the passengers rushed to his safety and when the aircraft landed successfully,
00:19he was rushed for treatment.
00:21The captain accepting and confirming on video that he was stabbed multiple times.
00:27For the first time, we hear directly to what happened, at least which is now, remember, an excerpt,
00:34but the first testimony has come in from Fly Dubai Captain Smith Mashar, the Indian captain,
00:41who's lived in Mumbai and India all his life, recently had shifted to Dubai for work and joined Fly Dubai.
00:48Stabbed by his co-pilot, we do not know whether it was a knife, what sharp object of a weapon
00:53that was used.
00:54Also, we know that because the aircraft landed in Saudi, immediately in Dubai, he was rushed for treatment.
01:01But listen in, listen in here to the first reaction.
01:06He just, he hit me like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

02:02My hand, I can move but I can't do this. I can't squeeze my hand.
02:10He just, he hit me like so many times.
02:15No, no, no, no.
02:16Hit me too many times. I can move my hand but I cannot squeeze it.
02:22He's possibly being asked by the health practitioners, the medical professionals there,
02:26to move his hand a little bit, possibly to check the movement of the body.
02:30And he says, I can't move but I can't do what you're expecting me to do.
02:34I cannot squeeze my hand.
02:36And then he suddenly remembers what happened by the co-pilot and he says,
02:39he hit me too many times, stabbed me.
02:42And then clearly the medical practitioners, realising the emergency, jump into safety.
02:47You can only imagine what happened in that cockpit
02:50and had he not been able to open the door from inside,
02:53passengers would not have been able to push through the door.
02:57Pranay Upadhyay from India Today Global is joining us for the latest on that.
03:01Pranay, over to you. Explain the video in detail that you've accessed for us.
03:05Pooja, as you can make out from these visuals, this clearly shows that, you know, what kind of situation this
03:10was.
03:11Horrid details coming in and explain this situation where the Captain Smith Machair was lying on the floor.
03:18He was profusely bleeding.
03:19You know, onboard doctors and paramedics, those who could stabilise him.
03:23They were trying to explain and to get more details what exactly happened inside the cockpit.
03:29And here you can hear Captain Smith Machair clearly saying that he was repeatedly hit by his co-pilot.
03:35In fact, he was trying to explain to those who were attending him that he can't move his hand properly.
03:42He wanted to close his hand and squeeze his hand and he was unable to do that.
03:46You can make out from these visuals that, you know, there's blood stain all over here.
03:50And it's very close to that cockpit door.
03:53You can make out from these visuals that he was very close to that door.
03:57He was lying on the floor.
03:58And in fact, he was being attended.
04:00In fact, one of the dentists on board that flight, he attended and he stabilised Captain Smith Machair.
04:06Till the time the aircraft landed at Tabuk Airport of Saudi Arabia where he was attended.
04:10And now we are also learning that Captain Smith Machair is being flown to Abu Dhabi for higher medical facilities
04:17and his treatment.
04:18Because his family is still there in Dubai.
04:21Recently, Indian ambassador to Abu Dhabi, Deepak Mittal, he also met with the family.
04:26Pranay, I requested you to stay on.
04:28I requested you to stay on, please, because I want the viewer to listen in again to what was said

06:50visuals carefully and we are of course taking i can tell you all cautionary measures when it comes
06:54to guidelines but it needs to be sent out to the viewer to you watching about how possibly this
07:0039 year old as reports are suggesting is smith machard who managed to not only keep this attacker
07:08co-pilot at bay open the door transmit alert signals of emergency to authorities and that
07:15is where with hope that the pilots and crew members and passengers can come in and everyone
07:20united can save this aircraft that's the hero on your screen ladies and gentlemen
07:24it's one for the books and legends i have news coming in let's take a look at that
07:37israel envoy has given out a fresh statement also that has come in about one the uae statement the
07:43uae are talking about its own jurisdiction here in this case an investigation israel's envoy to
07:50the united arab emirates has said the motive and fly dubai incident is not yet determined it is too
07:55early to draw conclusions israeli intelligence agencies are looking into the incident and that
08:01uh the we are told that the prime minister of israel also has spoken to the authorities in uae
08:06especially the uae president already so the governments are coordinating but everyone
08:12wants to know what was the motive of that attacker co-pilot what happened in that cockpit of course
08:18they'll be analyzing the data that has come in with it but pranayupadhyay continues to be with us
08:23our india today global editor pranay tell me this how crucial do you think will be
08:28uh the coordination between israel uae saudi and india if required puja this is a very important
08:36thing uh as far as the coordination and investigation is concerned because we do not know there are still
08:41missing links in this entire incident what exactly was the motive was uh that pilot the co-pilot who
08:46attacked captain smith machar was he acting alone is it was it a lone wolf attack were there any
08:51other accomplice on board uh who did uh you know he was coordinating with how did it happen so all
08:58these missing links are still there and part of investigation and i think that is the reason why
09:02uae authorities have uh have insisted that they want to have their own jurisdiction uh on the aircraft
09:08and this entire investigation so that they can complete the investigation with all the details because
09:13they it's their aircraft they have their passenger manifest they have all the details and in fact
09:18both the pilots uh were uh were working for that uh for the america uh carrier and that is the
09:24reason
09:24why uae is doing that but meanwhile uh you we know that uh president uh mohammed bin zayed al nahyan
09:31of
09:31uae spoke to israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu uae authorities are also coordinating with the
09:36israeli authorities on this thing uh meanwhile the saudi authorities are also working uh in in
09:41coordination with uae and in fact umani authorities are also cooperating with this thing so entire west
09:47asia region uh you know this entire incident sent uh scare messages to the entire region for that
09:54matter and that's that is the reason why all the these countries involving uae uh saudi arabia
09:59israel uh uman they are all coordinating keep tracking all the details because it's still a developing
10:05story a lot of questions are still unanswered but viewer leave no doubt about it had this not been
10:11about the presence of mind and the courage of this man on your screen bloodied injured and yet managed
10:18to hold on there could have been a massive disaster and that is the reason that prime minister modi
10:23said that this was like averting a 9-11 israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has also called
10:29him a true hero and not just them u.s president donald trump also congratulating and calling smith machar
10:36a hero that the world is looking at i want you to take a look at the special report about
10:40how the
10:41world leaders are talking about this pilot exemplary bravery at 30 000 feet
11:00this young man just acts with incredible incredible uh heroism and saves the day the pilot was
11:09in very bad shape and i guess he still is in very bad shape but he had the sense to
11:16amazing
11:17to in a way he was a hero and praise from the world's biggest leaders captain smith machar the indian
11:26origin
11:26fly dubai pilot who saved more than 170 lives is drawing praise from all quarters of the world
11:33and rightly so the loudest cheer for captain smith came from prime minister modi who said
11:41the pilot has made india proud and urged everyone to pray for his speedy recovery
11:48captain smith
12:03smith
12:07samif
12:20The Prime Minister also spoke to Smith's family and lauded his bravery.
12:25He assured them that all possible help is being provided to Smith.
12:30Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu also hailed the courage of the Indian hero,
12:34who had a close shave with death but still managed to save every single life on the flight.
12:42Even though he was adversely affected, he was attacked, his life was at risk,
12:48he went on to save the lives of more than hundreds of people.
12:51So it is what India stands for, it is the bravery what he has made every Indian proud today.
12:56And I was very happy when I got to know that Honourable Prime Minister has spoken to their family also
13:01because whole India is proud of him and we all stand with him and his family.
13:06Congress Chief Khargay to praise the brave man.
13:31Praise for Smith came not just nationally but internationally as well.
13:35Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose countrymen's lives were saved by Captain Smith,
13:41saluted his valour and said that Israel's Yaniv Hayoun and Smith averted what could have been another 9-11.
13:51Now you have the possibility of having another 9-11 and an Israeli passenger, a civilian.
13:58I met this guy, he's an incredible hero.
14:01Look at what he did under impossible circumstances.
14:04This young man just acts with incredible, incredible heroism
14:10and saves the day along with the Indian pilot who was there and the others who came to help.
14:17Even US President Donald Trump hailed Smith a hero.
14:21The pilot was in very bad shape and I guess he still is in very bad shape but he had
14:28the sense to, amazing, to, in a way he was a hero, to open the door.
14:34You know those doors are solid steel, you can't get them open from outside.
14:38He was able to fall back and get the door open and scream.
14:42Captain Smith Machart did what deserves to be praised by all and showed the world what true bravery and courage
14:49look like.
15:01So clearly we know very soon what exactly happened and transpired in that cockpit but how clearly this man, Smith
15:08Machart, managed to save lives of himself and of the passengers.
15:12But here's what, Israel's ambassador to India, Ruvin Azhar, in a conversation with India today's Gaurav Savant had to say
15:20how Israel's looking at whether this is a hijack, a terror attack or something even worse.
15:25Here's more leaving you with that interaction.
15:33On the third anniversary of the 7th of October terror attacks on Israel, was there an attempt for another terror
15:41strike?
15:41And did Captain Smith Machart, an Indian pilot, play a very critical role in averting it along with brave passengers
15:50from Israel?
15:51With me is Israel's ambassador to India, Ambassador Ruvin Azhar.
15:56Ambassador, welcome.
15:58Congratulations that a major terror attack was averted, but is this, was this a major terror attack?
16:04What is the information that you have, sir?
16:06Well, so it seems according to the witnesses, the Israeli witnesses that spoke with the prime minister and gave interviews
16:13to the press,
16:14this is a precedent because I don't recall any co-pilot attacking the pilot in a cockpit ever.
16:22So it seems that not only the co-pilot, the attacker attacked the hero, Captain Smith Machart, but also after
16:33he stabbed him, he tried to malfunction the plane in order to bring it to collapse.
16:38And thanks to the fact that the captain had the resolve and the courage and the bravery to manage to
16:45open the door of the cockpit,
16:48the Israeli passengers managed to enter to neutralize the attacker and to begin to, you know, pull the plane up
16:59until the crew that was sitting in the passenger cabin entered and managed to stabilize the situation.
17:05And, of course, a doctor that came and saved the life of the captain.
17:10So all of that seems pretty clear right now.
17:13But, of course, we don't know yet what exactly happened, and we're waiting for the results of both the investigation
17:19of the attacker,
17:20the investigation of the witnesses, the analysis of the black box of the plane, and then probably we'll be able
17:28to learn more.
17:29Now, what is your reading or Israel's reading of the timing of this strike that took place or this attempt
17:36that took place?
17:37Well, I don't know exactly, you know, what brought the attacker to do it now, but no doubt this is
17:43a crucial timing,
17:44not only because we are commemorating the 7th of October in a few days,
17:50but also because this happened only two days after the visit of Prime Minister Netanyahu to the UAE,
17:55and according to reports, his meeting with leaders in the region.
17:59This is an attack against the heart of the Abraham Accords that were signed six years ago.
18:03And Fly Dubai was operating 10 flights per day to Israel, and they continued to operate them, you know, throughout
18:12the war.
18:12And they are only one company, also Etihad and Emirates.
18:16So this attempt to kill peace, to disrupt aviation, to destabilize the region,
18:26is something that is very dangerous, and I'm happy that we had this united cooperation against terrorism
18:35from ordinary individuals that raised up to the moment, and without the bravery of each one of them,
18:41180 lives would have been lost.
18:43Now we have to ask ourselves how this could have happened,
18:46and I'm sure that the security agencies and other agencies, the civil aviation authorities and others,
18:53are going to dwell into the issue in order to make sure that the protocols are adapted to such, you
19:02know, scenarios.
19:02That's a very important question.
19:04You raise, Ambassador, on protocols.
19:06Do you see a violation of protocols in this particular incident,
19:10that a co-pilot targets a pilot, you know, the origins of the co-pilot, is that a cause for
19:17concern,
19:17especially at a time when UAE and Israel, as you mentioned, because of Abraham Accord,
19:22they're not only normalized ties, but they're intensifying the engagement,
19:27and which is being looked at as a way to pave peace in rest of, you know, West Asia.
19:32Do you suspect, one protocol, two other regional players at play here, since there's a conflict on?
19:39Well, as I said, I don't know yet, but there's no doubt that there is an intensification of cooperation
19:46in the security field, in the intelligence field.
19:49In the last few years, we are defending the skies of the Middle East together
19:53with the cooperation of the United States and armies of the region and outside the region.
19:59This is very important, and this attack only, you know, stresses the importance of intensifying the cooperation even more,
20:07because we are not going to surrender to terrorism, and if we have to draw an example, this is the
20:11example,
20:12because the brave captain and the brave passengers and the brave crew of the company
20:19has shown us that when we unite, we can defeat terrorism.
20:23So this is the responsibility of the governments.
20:25We know that all the protocols were activated when the hijack sign was sent,
20:32and our civil aviation authorities, our air force entered into alert, combat jets were actually sent,
20:40and our prime minister was alert because, you know, whether this co-pilot would have been able to take control
20:49of the flight,
20:50maybe Israel would be attacked itself, and then the prime minister would have to make the call on whether to
20:56neutralize the plane.
20:56So this is a very, very sensitive business.
20:59We will have to do the effort, the extra effort, to make sure that our protocols work,
21:04that people that shouldn't be involved in flying this plane won't be involved in the future,
21:10and we are going to make sure that happens.
21:14Sir, that's a very big point you're making.
21:16So are you saying that one of the apprehensions was that this co-pilot, apparently a man of Omani origin,
21:22he could have taken control of the plane, either flown it to the ground or flown it into a building
21:29like a repeat of 9-11?
21:31Well, we cannot discard that, and we have to be ready,
21:35and that's why I think it is essential that we will continue this cooperation,
21:41so we make sure that such incidents won't happen in the future.
21:46Sir, who investigates this? UAE, Israel, Saudi Arabia, or together?
21:51Well, I think that each country is going to get their relevant agencies involved,
21:56and once the results come out, both on the civil aviation side and the intelligence side,
22:03we will find a way to communicate as we have found it in the past.
22:08Sir, what can you tell us?
22:10What have you been able to learn, or what have agencies in Israel been able to learn
22:14about the role of Captain Schmidt Machar in this entire incident?
22:18Well, according to the witness that was interviewed by the Prime Minister himself yesterday,
22:25the part that the Captain Schmidt Machar played was crucial,
22:31because if he wouldn't have been able, as a result of the stabbing of him by the co-pilot,
22:38if he didn't have the resolve to get to the door and open it,
22:43there wasn't any way for the crew or for the passengers or for the other pilots to penetrate,
22:54and within a matter of seconds the plane could have collapsed into the ground.
22:59So the fact that he managed to open the door despite the pain that he was enduring,
23:06I think is remarkable.
23:07And all our leadership, from the Prime Minister down, the President, the Head of the Israeli Parliament,
23:12and the entire Israeli people, all of them admire the Captain.
23:16I spoke with very senior leadership this morning, I cannot disclose,
23:21but we never forget people that come to assistance of the State of Israel in times of need.
23:26We will never forget this hero.
23:29He indeed is a great hero, and India and Israel are great partners in the war.
23:36We will find a way to recognize it.
23:39Really?
23:39Yes.
23:40What does that mean, sir?
23:41You will see.
23:44That sounds very interesting.
23:46So, you know, for speaking to me here on India today, sir, many thanks.
23:49But before I let you go, I also want to figure out
23:51what kind of changes would Israel be looking at in protocols to ensure that there is no repeat of this
23:57incident.
23:57Well, we have to leave that work, that important work, to the professional agencies.
24:01I think it would be irresponsible for me, as a non-expert, to comment on these issues.
24:07Sir, for joining me here on India today, Ambassador, many thanks.
24:11So the Israeli ambassador to India, Ambassador Ruben Azar,
24:14very clear about the role of the pilot and those on board that aircraft,
24:19and the fact that Israel intends to recognize the valor, the grit, and the determination of Captain Smith Machar.
24:27With cameraman Alok Das in Delhi, Gaurav Savant for India Today.
