Tonight, we'll spend a rainy Halloween at the Greywater Library, where its new assistant, Wren, helps make spiced apple punch and paper lanterns for the town's lantern night by the lake.
Hester, the librarian, brings red apples from her sister's orchard, and the punch simmers in her mother's copper pan. In the bindery, Mr Tulley hums while he mends an old ledger and spreads out photographs of lantern nights long ago. In the afternoon the town comes in to make paper lanterns, and at dusk everyone sets them afloat from the jetty. Nothing much happens. The rain comes and goes, and the lanterns drift into the mist.
This is a cosy Halloween, not a scary one: pumpkins on the windowsills, warm punch and soft rain, told in a calm, slow voice. The story and the sleep affirmations last about 36 minutes, and soft music carries on after that for about three hours in all, so you can drift off without touching your phone. At 11 minutes the screen fades to black, so the room stays dark while you sleep.
