00:00I'm Mary Crisp, Chief Materiality Designer at Jaguar.
00:03One of the first questions I'm often asked is, what is materiality?
00:07So materiality was formerly known as colour and materials,
00:11or if you go back a little further than that, it was known as colour and trim.
00:14But the evolution of the term is more than a name change,
00:18it represents a fundamental shift in the role a materiality designer plays.
00:23So yes, we've designed and developed every colour material and finish you can see before you today,
00:28but the role is extended beyond that.
00:31So with Type 01, we've defined the materiality philosophies that underpin the exterior and the interior.
00:39We've worked and created and collaborated with artists and makers from analogous industries in the early stages.
00:46And then we worked hand in hand with test houses and our engineering colleagues to bring these materials to life.
00:52And then most importantly with Type 01, we challenge convention at every stage.
00:58And then to me, luxury doesn't always mean more materials.
01:02So in this interior, every material has a role, it has a reason, it has a reason for being there.
01:11If I break that down a bit, we've got the layered tonal colour palette that brings atmosphere.
01:17Then we've got the rich textures that add depth.
01:21And then we've got the brass signature statement finishes that add character and make the interior entirely memorable.
01:28So on the seat materials, so we've got two materials that we use on the seats.
01:32We've got Ultra Fabrics Neo Grain and Quadrat Duo Weave.
01:37So Ultra Fabrics Neo Grain is a lightweight material and it's got this beautifully soft haptic to it.
01:44And when placed on the seat facings, like you can see here, it allows us to support this sculptural design
01:51language of the interior.
01:53It also allows us to get rid of the conventional stitch lines that you'd normally have on the seat.
01:58And then it gives this pure, clean canvas that allows other materials to wrap around it.
02:04And then the Quadrat Duo Weave, so this is a textile.
02:07So this was inspired by some of the early textile work we did with textile artists in the initial creation
02:14stages of the project.
02:16And now the production version we bring to you today through a collaboration with Quadrat, Europe's leading textile design house.
02:24So it's got a beautifully warm feel to it, a luxury aesthetic, and it brings a sense of home to
02:31a moving architecture.
02:33It's a 30% wool polyester blend, and it's a lightweight material as well.
02:39So helping bring that overall weight of the cabin down, something that's so vitally important with an EV.
02:45And then the flooring.
02:48So the application of the flooring is quite unique.
02:52We've applied a bespoke melange de l'or carpet construction.
02:58And you'll notice, yeah, with the application, so most other automotive products, they'd have the carpet on the main floor
03:05area and perhaps a portion of the door sills.
03:08But here we've chosen to run our flooring material all the way up the lower doors and all the way
03:14up the lower pillars.
03:14So when you sit here in this low seated driving position, it really wraps around you.
03:20It makes you feel really welcomed and cosseted.
03:22And it's a subtle reference to some of those iconic Jaguar interiors of the past.
03:27And so then our hero material.
03:30So you can see here on the door finishes and also all the way down the central spine running into
03:36the load space.
03:37We have our brass inspired signature statement finishes.
03:40So these began life right at the start of the project in what we now call our study of brass.
03:46So we were collaborating and creating with artists and jewellery makers making experimental pieces of brass.
03:54And we really celebrated those for their inherent qualities.
03:57So their inherent colour or the inherent surface detailing that was coming through processes like sand casting or heating.
04:04And we placed these pieces within the studio in a place we now call our maker's house.
04:10And we left them there and we really celebrated how they changed over time as well.
04:15The patina we were seeing on the surface.
04:17But of course if you've ever held a brass object you'll know how incredibly dense and heavy brass is as
04:23a material.
04:25So the challenge has been how do we turn the inspiration and the beauty of those samples into a material
04:31that's suitable for automotive production.
04:33And so the results you can see before you today.
04:37So this is an embossed anodised aluminium.
04:40So the anodisation brings the brass colourway and then the fine embossing on the surface gives it a beautifully soft
04:47haptic.
04:48And in fact there's the most number of metal finishers on any Jaguar that's gone before it.
04:53And you'll notice it's exactly the same material that we use on the fender finisher on the exterior.
04:59So it underlines our luxury gap.
05:02And it's in that location and on the door finishers right here that we've chosen to include our leaper, our
05:08symbol of provenance,
05:09which is etched into the surface like a hallmark would be applied to a piece of art.
05:13We are incredibly proud of how all the materials have come together in Type 01,
05:18how we've managed to retain the concept through to production.
05:22And it's just been such a privilege to work on this project and be able to speak about it to
05:27the world finally.
