00:00My name is Dr. Chris Carrier and I am the lead aerodynamicist for Jaguar cars.
00:04The proportions of Type 01 are fundamentally positive from an aerodynamics point of view.
00:11The really long and low roofline, the tapered rear end with the sharp cutoff
00:18that creates a really stable flow separation, these are really positive features from an aerodynamics point of view.
00:24At the front end of the car, there's a lot of presence, there's a lot of clarity and sharp feature
00:32lines
00:32that give the Type 01 its unique aesthetic character.
00:37We also have incredible 23-inch wheels as standard.
00:41This is more of a challenge from an aerodynamic perspective.
00:45So it's my responsibility to release the performance, making the smallest possible changes
00:51to extract the most amount of aerodynamic performance
00:54and unlock and harness the true potential of the Type 01.
00:59This is a unique challenge.
01:01We knew we had to work in a different way.
01:04Of course, we do simulation and that helps us understand the flow physics,
01:09but ultimately we have to craft our way to the solution.
01:13This means the aerodynamics team and the exterior design team
01:17working together, directly collaborating inside a wind tunnel
01:22to find those minimal changes, millimetre by millimetre,
01:27crafting our way to the ultimate performance for Type 01.
01:31One of the areas that we put a lot of effort into
01:33is managing the airflow around the front corner.
01:36In this area, we changed every surface, millimetre by millimetre,
01:42making no individual change greater than 8 millimetres,
01:46but extracting huge amounts of aerodynamic performance.
01:50We were able to find 23 counts of aerodynamic drag.
01:54This equates to about 12 miles of range on a typical drive cycle,
01:58but it could be as much as 20 miles in a highway or a motorway cruise scenario.
02:04These systems are extremely effective.
02:07When fully closed, they can add as much as 27 miles of additional range,
02:11but they can open to cool the powertrain components,
02:15maximising the efficiency of the entire powertrain system.
02:18This is particularly important when you're fast charging the car,
02:22where you generate quite a bit of heat and we need to manage that heat.
02:26For the brake system, it means we don't have to compromise.
02:28We can deliver a really low drag solution when the active flaps are shut,
02:33but we can also deliver a lot of brake cooling performance.
02:37Managing the airflow across and through the wheels is also extremely important.
02:43We have lightweight insert technology on all the wheel styles available for Type 01,
02:49and these help to manage the airflow across the wheel,
02:52minimising drag through the wheel to achieve effective brake cooling performance,
02:56but we achieve that in a very lightweight way,
02:59so also boosting efficiency and minimising unsprung mass.
03:02A really important feature about the aerodynamic performance of Type 01
03:06is our ability to generate positive thrust on the back surface of the vehicle.
03:12We're able to do this by managing the airflow along the side of the vehicle,
03:16over the swooping rear roofline,
03:19and underneath the flat and sculpted underbody,
03:21to achieve a level of pressure recovery which actually starts to push the car forwards.
03:28This results in a rear thrust force applied to the back of the vehicle,
03:32equivalent to about four kilograms.
03:34To achieve this pressure recovery, we have to manage the energy in the flow.
03:39We don't want to lose energy.
03:42So managing the flow around the side of the car, around the front corner,
03:45the extremely flat but in place is sculpted underbody,
03:50and the swooping roofline,
03:52all contribute to maintaining the energy in the airflow around the car.
03:56As that flow separates from the rear of the car,
03:59it recirculates and posits itself back on the rear surface of the vehicle,
04:03and this actually creates a pressure recovery zone.
04:06This high pressure actually pushes the car forwards.
04:10It's been the honour and privilege of my career to lead the aerodynamic development of the Type 01.
04:15It's the most aerodynamic Jaguar ever, with a drag coefficient of 0.23.
04:21But we've also been able to preserve the original design vision.
04:27Type 01 is founded on its unique design.
04:30But as the lead aerodynamicist for Jaguar cars,
04:33it's my responsibility to extract the maximum amount of aerodynamic performance
04:38to make sure the car goes as far as possible on every single charge.
04:42We have a three-stage deployable spoiler.
04:45At P1, the spoiler is stowed.
04:48It represents the original design vision.
04:50At P2, the spoiler deploys to its most efficient position.
04:55And then at higher speeds, the spoiler deploys to P3.
05:00At P3, its maximum deployed position,
05:04it generates around 75 kilograms of additional rear downforce,
05:08which maximises high-speed stability.
