00:00I'm John Darlington, I'm the Chief Engineer for the new Jaguar, the Type Zero One.
00:04I'm just going to walk you through some of the highlights on the car, but before I do that,
00:09just a little bit about my personal journey. I joined this programme five years ago when it was
00:13a clean sheet of paper and it's a massive honour of mine to basically lead the engineering team
00:19to reimagine the Jaguar brand. So it's something that I'm hugely passionate about and there's a
00:25massive team behind us who have got the same passion and energy to do something truly special.
00:30If we just look at this car and we think about the proportions, it is low, it is long, it
00:35is cab rearward, it's got some really challenging proportions. What that meant from an engineer's
00:42viewpoint is that it really gives us something to get our teeth into and the first bit for
00:47me was it had to be a unique architecture, it had to be bespoke. So this is dedicated to
00:54Jaguar and the reasons for that is to make sure we capture those proportions that are
00:58so important to Jaguar but really make sure we land that driven experience which is so
01:02again important to that Jaguar. So if we just maybe touch on some of those highlights. I'm
01:08going to start at the back of the car. So I mentioned it was low, it's 1.4 metres high.
01:14That's really low for an EV but then we then got to think about how we enable that.
01:18So we've got a unique layout on this battery pack. We actually split the battery pack. We don't run
01:24any batteries in this area at all and that is about giving the space back into row two to make
01:28that posture really comfortable so you've got a comfortable position in row two. Also as well,
01:34you want to be able to sit in this car. You don't want to sit on it, you want to
01:37be immersed in that
01:38in that feeling. So we actually mount the row one seat in that area so you've got that really good
01:43sitting feel in the car which is so important for a Jaguar. Clearly though we need to make sure we've
01:49got enough energy on board in this car to deliver really credible power and range. So we've made
01:55that job harder by not running any battery cells in this area so we had to think about how we
02:00enabled
02:00that. So if I walk forward on the car there's a really unique feature on this car and it's
02:04one of the main reasons why we're on a unique architecture. In this area here, so forward of
02:09the bulkhead behind the front wheel, we've got an industry first structural solution on the car.
02:14We call it the Tri-Apex node and it allows us to run battery cells in this area and then
02:20the battery
02:21management system in this area really make use of this space that enables us to keep the car low but
02:26also get that energy on board and by using this space that delivers another 150 horsepower and about
02:3370 miles of range to you as the customer which just shows that sort of attention and creation in
02:40the car. And I think it's such an amazing product and I'm so proud to have been part of it
02:46and there's
02:47some really unique solutions in here which I think are truly amazing. So just to build on that unique
02:52front-end structure that we've got in this car, if you think about we've got a dedicated BEV architecture
02:58that's allowed us to really think about how we manage the connections through this car. So focus on
03:03those large cast nodes but in into extrusions, inclusion of the battery pack into the structure,
03:08that's allowed us to deliver the stiffest Jaguar ever. So it's 51.7 kilonewtons per degree
03:16of torsional stiffness in the car. Really, really important for that foundation of refinement and
03:20dynamics and that allows us to really build on that driven character that's so important for Jaguar and is
03:26really one of the other key elements of having a bespoke architecture. So really, really important for
03:31delivering that driven experience. So during the development of this car, we've absolutely focused
03:36on the validation methods. So we've done things we've not done before. We've gone earlier with
03:42physical prototypes than we normally do on a programme. We are going with a brand new car,
03:46first off architecture, it's important that we validate those key points. Also, before we went ahead
03:52of those prototypes to ensure they're as mature as they could be, we did extensive virtual testing,
03:57extensive rig testing, to make sure that when we got to those first prototypes that they're as mature
04:02as they could be. So that was testing propulsion systems, software systems, all of those key hardware
04:08systems on the car. And to put that into context for you, we did over 200,000 hours of testing
04:13to
04:13really make sure that those systems were credible. And then we ran those prototypes for over 750,000 miles
04:20over all of the conditions around the world, from frozen lakes in Sweden, all the way through to hot
04:25locations and really extreme conditions, to make sure that this car is the best car it can possibly
04:32be. And also to make sure that all you need to worry about is enjoying the driven experience. So
04:38for us, we're super proud on how we've delivered this car and it is a great testament to the future
04:43of Jaguar. So we are so proud of what we've achieved with Type 01. So to put that into context,
04:48it's the stiffest Jaguar ever. It's the most refined, it's the most powerful, it is the most aerodynamic.
04:56It's also got 360 filed patent applicants, which makes it the most patented Jaguar ever.
05:03And all of that while holding that design vision. So truly proud of what we've achieved with Type 01.
