Anja Niedringhaus (12 October 1965 – 4 April 2014) was a German photojournalist who worked for the Associated Press. She was the only woman on a team of 11 AP photographers that won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for coverage of the Iraq War.

The 26-year-old Anja Niedringhaus is sitting in a UN Transall plane on the way to Sarajevo. The war has just started in Yugoslavia. Niedringhaus had stubbornly worked on her boss beforehand to report from the war zone in the middle of Europe as a photographer for the European Pressphoto Agency.

00:28There is this
00:29a drop in the ocean, meant only for you.
00:34I found him.
00:39I am so happy.
00:43So happy.
01:07Five minutes until the broadcast.
01:22He took war photographs like no one else.
01:26She had an incredible eye.
01:30Anja sees with her heart.
01:34She finds the soul of the people she photographs.
01:42Millions of people saw her work.
01:45Her photos, her stories could change lives.
01:50They were able to influence politics.
01:53Their work required tremendous strength and courage.
01:58In crisis situations, in war, in the face of bombs and destruction.
02:07Anja felt drawn to people who were not heard.
02:11She knew that was important.
02:14That's what mattered.
02:36War in the heart of Europe.
02:39That's unimaginable.
02:41But the dream of a peacefully united Europe has now been shattered.
02:46What lasted 73 years has now come to an end: the unity of Yugoslavia.
02:51Slovenes and Croats want independence.
02:57The Serbs are bringing their tanks into position.
03:00Neighbors become enemies.
03:04That's big.
03:06We must be the first to report from there.
03:10Genghis.
03:13Send me there.
03:14Where should I send you?
03:17Yugoslavia.
03:19You?
03:21Did you see the news?
03:23A war is breaking out there right now.
03:26Exactly.
03:27And that would be the first war in Europe since 1945.
03:29No, I'm sorry, I don't have time right now.
03:31This could be something big, Genghis.
03:34For you, for me, I can do this.
03:43And that?
03:45Nobody would have expected that from me.
03:47Do you see that?
03:48Yes.
03:50But Willy Brandt
03:51Don't pull your Kalashnikov on you right now.
03:54That's not the point.
03:56That's exactly the point.
03:57You have no military experience.
03:59No experience with war or conflict.
04:02However.
04:03We don't even need to talk about it.
04:05Did you understand?
04:06I am a photographer.
04:07I have no partner, no children.
04:08I can take good care of myself.
04:10I am exactly the right person for this job.
04:11Stop, stop.
04:12Come down a bit, okay?
04:14I don't want your blood on my hands.
04:17That's it.
04:18You're the youngest one here.
04:20The only woman among all my photographers.
04:22You've come so far.
04:24So stop bothering me like that.
04:25Yes, I am better than all the others.
04:27And this was child's play.
04:30What is that supposed to mean?
04:32War is for men.
04:35Whether you like it or not.
04:37But that's just how it is, Anja.
04:40That's what you're really after.
04:41Because I don't have a penis?
04:44Your words, not mine.
05:07If I still want to be a real journalist,
05:09Then I have to go down there.
05:10Then I have to go to this war.
05:12You know, he's not just anywhere.
05:14It's located in the heart of Europe.
05:15He's here.
05:17Little sister, you want to be respected.
05:19Is that right?
05:20I love you, little sister.
05:25So much is already being achieved.
05:27You cover Wimbledon, you photograph celebrities.
05:30You don't need to worry anyway.
05:31They won't let me under there.
05:33I am too young, too inexperienced, and too female.
05:48Yes.
06:12Hey, what are you still doing here so late?
06:17Dear Mr. Sehren, for several months now there has been a civil war in Yugoslavia.
06:22Virtually every EPA photographer was sent there. Except me.
06:26No, that's enough.
06:33It has become increasingly obvious that the EPA is no longer interested in working with me as a photographer.
06:41Not again.
06:46No. 75
06:53No way.
07:04To escape the gunfire, we plummet almost vertically towards the ground.
07:08Everything is flying through the air. I feel incredibly nauseous.
07:16Come on!
07:18Come on, boys. Faster. Let's go!
07:21Get your ticket!
07:37E-P-A?
07:38Yes.
07:40Yes.
08:10Are you supposed to be my replacement?
08:11And the hole will remain.
08:12Ah, and always remember: when you're driving, always stay in the middle of the road.
08:17The left and right sides are usually mined. Good luck!
08:21Bon voyage!
08:25Bon voyage!
08:25Bon voyage!
08:46Bon voyage!
08:47Bon voyage!
08:52Bon voyage!
08:53Bon voyage!
08:59Bon voyage!
09:00Bon voyage!
09:15Yes, yes, far away!
09:16Hi.
09:16Stay tuned.
09:19No worries.
09:20I know the way.
09:22And knows where the mines are.
09:45Stop.
09:46ID Control.
09:47Your papers. ID.
09:52Let's see what we have here.
09:59We can go.
10:07Stop. Stop.
10:09Stop.
10:09Please.
10:11She doesn't know the speech.
10:13She doesn't know what she's doing, okay?
10:16It's a completely new thing.
10:17Totally new thing, okay?
10:18Hey, here, take this.
10:20This is yours.
10:21Come on, it's yours.
10:24It's all ok.
10:25Yes, yes, yes, yes.
10:26Okay, we're quiet.
10:27Yes, yes, alright, alright.
10:35Let's go.
10:37Go.
10:47No electricity.
10:50No water.
10:52I'm cold.
10:53For a moment I am afraid of my own courage.
10:58Please.
10:58I'm cold.
11:10This is man.
11:18This is important.
11:23Everything here is broken.
11:31Hello?
11:37That thing with the checkpoint earlier...
11:42I had no idea.
11:44You know what? Take the next flight home and do us all a favor and get the hell out of here before anyone...
11:54You're being killed because of me. May I please?
12:10Knock, knock.
12:13Sorry about...
12:19At least...
12:21...we have enough leg.
12:40Grenade launcher.
12:42Caliber 82.
12:45Italic production.
12:48Oh yes?
12:50Yes.
12:53I'm not taking any pictures of tanks and weapons here.
12:57Is that so?
13:00OK.
13:01And why are you here?
13:05I want to end the war.
13:07With my photos.
13:10Like back then in Vietnam.
13:20You think you're taking pictures here like the Napheim girl?
13:24Oh my god, can you be serious?
13:27Were you even born when the photo was taken?
13:31Those were different times, girl.
13:33No.
13:34They were just other photographers.
13:39Look there.
13:46This was the site of the Olympic Games.
13:50The bobsleigh track is now a trench.
13:54And I reckon those grenades just now came from the ski jump.
14:02Yes.
14:04You can't believe it, can you?
14:06Yes.
14:06That was only a few years ago.
14:08People used to dance and sing and think...
14:13What?
14:17Do you know?
14:18It's over.
14:20No Olympic Games, no tourists.
14:23The only thing that matters now is surviving the day.
14:27Come on.
14:29Come.
14:36Shit.
14:39Fuck.
14:42Rule one.
14:44Always take cover. Always.
14:47Yes, that's enough.
14:48Once you feel safe here,
14:51You are dead.
15:06So you believe we can't change anything here.
15:08Do you think so?
15:11This is not your war.
15:14You are just an observer.
15:16The moment you forget that,
15:19That's the moment when you have to leave.
15:28So, I'm just supposed to watch, right?
15:30Is that what you're saying?
15:32That's the only way.
15:38That's not me.
15:47It was horrible.
15:52It is extremely difficult to report from here.
15:55The journalists suffered under the siege.
15:58almost like the civilian population.
16:02Fear everywhere,
16:04tension
16:05and danger.
16:07Jason,
16:09He is a freelancer.
16:10works for everyone.
16:11TV crews,
16:11for the sea,
16:13Gary is a photographer for Newsweek.
16:15The guy next to him writes for The Times.

16:23Welcome to our place now.
16:24Nice to meet you.

16:27Have you already specified anything?
16:28Hey, come on, don't forget.
16:29You're actually having a little fun.
16:31Come, come, come, come, come.
16:32Hey, you got the slide from my girlfriend.
16:34Hey, guys.
16:35Sit down.
16:36Come on, there.
16:36He's up.
16:37Everything okay?
16:38Yes.
16:40Yes?
16:42Cigarette?
16:44Uh, yeah.
16:45Yes?
16:46OK.
16:47So, if you need anything from me,
16:48Let me know, okay?
16:49It doesn't matter what.
16:50If you, I have no idea,
16:51Cigarettes, contacts,
16:53You need information
16:54or perhaps women's needs
16:56no idea,
16:56no idea,
16:57Yes?
16:58Let me know, okay?
17:00I'll be right back,
17:01Yes?
17:02Oh, yeah.
17:03Yes.
17:04Thanks.
17:09I believe,
17:11They actually call that breakfast.
17:13Mhm.
17:16Potato soup.
17:17Mhm.
17:18This is a classic.
17:20Yes?
17:21Mhm.
17:22Yes.
17:24Hey.
17:26For friends
17:28among us.
17:29Oh, uh,
17:30No coke for me.
17:31That's sugar.
17:40No.
17:57Go!
18:13I don't know what. We didn't receive a single picture.
18:16I know. I feel like a bouilleur.
18:19I'm not one of those bang-bang photographers.
18:22I need more time.
18:30Time? Reuters, AP.
18:33All the other reporters are delivering daily, and I've received nothing.
18:36What we absolutely don't have is time, you know?
18:40Anja, I know how good you are. Otherwise you wouldn't be down there.
18:44But you are not the Messiah.
18:46Send me pictures of this damn war. Send me anything.
18:49That's why you went there.
19:29What did you expect?
19:30No idea.
19:34Either I'm too early or I'm too late.
19:39Either I'm too close.
19:48Or too far, I don't know.
19:50I just don't feel it.
19:57You think about so much.
19:59Yes.
20:02Just forget what others think, might think, or say.
20:15I'm good at what I do.
20:20But this is different.
20:24I feel kind of beside myself the whole time.
20:30No different.
20:32Don't think.
20:39It's about instinct.
20:44Just point and shoot.
20:47Point and shoot.
20:54Or better yet, just give up.
20:57Yes.
21:07This park is untouched in Jamba.
21:10Like an oasis of peace.
21:14But war takes no breaks.
21:23Emina!
21:32Mia!
21:34Oh.
21:36Miros!
21:38Mira!
21:40Mama!
