Anja Niedringhaus (12 October 1965 – 4 April 2014) was a German photojournalist who worked for the Associated Press. She was the only woman on a team of 11 AP photographers that won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for coverage of the Iraq War.

The 26-year-old Anja Niedringhaus is sitting in a UN Transall plane on the way to Sarajevo. The war has just started in Yugoslavia. Niedringhaus had stubbornly worked on her boss beforehand to report from the war zone in the middle of Europe as a photographer for the European Pressphoto Agency.

00:30Where are the others?
00:33On the way to the airport.
00:37Coffee.
00:39It's like Christmas!
00:42Even the guys from the agencies are running away.
00:46Damn cold.
00:47And that happens far too little.
00:51And why are you still here?
00:55Here or anywhere else.
00:58That makes no difference to me.
01:02But you can still catch a fly if you set off.
01:07I can't.
01:10How come?
01:15Just look.
01:37That's a really special photo, Anja.
01:43That's you.
01:47For the first time, I listened to my gut feeling and trusted it.
01:53People want me to photograph them.
01:56They want me to tell their story.
01:58And they want the whole world to see what's happening here.
02:01And that's what I want too.
02:03That way I can actually make a difference.
02:07Perhaps.
02:09But please never forget.
02:14You don't owe anyone anything.
02:18No one at all.
02:28Three.
02:29Three.
02:31Bell line.
02:35Three.
02:44Bell line.
03:09Are you completely crazy?
03:11There's a grieving mother here, and I'm wandering around like an armored turtle?
03:19Anja, that's far too limited, now come back here!
03:21Come on, please! Anja, come on now!
03:28Anja, please! Let's go, please!
03:30Come on, put them on!
03:32It's too dangerous here!
03:46Come on, put them on!
03:47Come on, put them on!
04:17Hello!
04:24Do we know each other?
04:25I was watching you.
04:28Uh, excuse me?
04:29You had a lovely laugh.
04:31But you've got some nerve, huh?
04:33And that's why I've decided to let you live for one more day.
04:38Get lost!
04:49And always smile!
04:58Anja!
05:00Anja!
05:01Hey!
05:02Anja, are you okay?
05:03Yes, yes!
05:04Yes, of course!
05:05How come?
05:06Are you sure?
05:07Yes!
05:08It's so beautiful!
05:09Yes!
05:12I have everything we need!
05:14First, I need some hot water.
05:16Does that exist too?
05:17Yes!
05:19Imagine!
05:19Come on, we've got it!
05:20Hello!
05:21I'll finally get some rest tonight!
05:24You are what I want!
05:27Cheers!
05:31Uh!
05:33Guide!
05:34It's so beautiful!
05:35You did such a great job!
05:37Our new home!
05:38Mhm!
05:43I was afraid you weren't the same anymore!
05:47Are you still there?
05:48The same?
05:50No idea!
05:53That's pretty intense!
05:56You know, as long as you have the camera in your hand, it's kind of...
06:01Yes why...
06:02Something like that...
06:03Unprotection?
06:04Yes!
06:05Yes!
06:06But if not, then it's just really...
06:10It's unbearable!
06:11It's truly awful!
06:12Absolutely gruesome!
06:14Hm!
06:17What about guys?
06:20Hello?
06:21Hello?
06:22Hello!
06:25Hello!
06:25Hello!
06:28Nobody there?
06:29Can't find anyone?
06:32Oh, you poor thing!
06:33Yes, please!
06:37She came from a small town in Germany and became one of the leading photojournalists of her generation.
06:45You can't achieve that with shyness.
06:54The conflict in Yugoslavia consisted of several wars.
06:58More journalists were wounded and killed there than in any other war since 1945.
07:04Anja, I, and others were there, risking our lives to tell stories we thought the
07:10The whole world must know about it.
07:11Except that the world didn't care at all.
07:28She worked with great focus and determination.
07:31She was very self-confident, and that helped her.
07:34Getting my way with her was a challenge.
08:01We've been hit.
08:04Oh no!
08:05Gasoline is leaking!
08:06Really?
08:10We died.
08:16Lord, that was real!
08:25We died!
08:31Hey!
08:31Hey, this hasn't hurt us yet!
08:33We died!
08:34Hue and answerben!
08:35Drive.
08:36Completely messed up!
08:36Laughter, hello?
08:39And where will we get new gasoline?
08:41Well, unfortunately, gasoline is only available on the black market these days.
08:43How much?
08:45150 Deutschmarks.
08:46Oh, that's okay.
08:47No, that's Prolita.
08:49That's a joke.
08:50No, seriously.
08:51And what about the UN peacekeeper?
08:53We won't give each other anything.
08:54That is not allowed.
09:03Look at your vest.
09:09And we won't do it again.
09:12Oh God.
09:14Jesus Christ.
09:26And please don't tell me we're driving through Sniper Alley.
09:35You have wives and children.
09:36Get in the back seat.
09:39Are you taking cover?
09:40Yes.
10:07Hey guys.
10:08This is a German journalist.
10:11She has run out of gas.
10:12She should come over.
10:17Understood.
10:18Then it fits.
10:20Hi.
10:21Hi.
10:21This is a German journalist.
10:49Well then, have a good trip.
10:54Yes, the contracts are good.
10:56What the hell.
11:03Oh God.
11:06Five shots of schnapps per liter.
11:08Really?
11:12Happy Hour, huh?
11:21Sometimes we're so busy driving to the hospital when we get injured,
11:24that we almost forgot to take photos.
11:36Vahim.
11:37I am here.
11:37You got this.
11:41Please help him.
11:42Vahim, come on, help out.
11:46We're taking him to the hospital.
11:47Immediately.
11:49Go over there.
11:51Okay, okay.
11:52One two three.
11:57Caution.
12:00The people here impress me more every day.
12:03The Serbs can take our lives, but not our dignity, they say.
12:21Anja.
12:23Anja.
12:23Anja.
12:23What is the problem?
12:24What do they say?
12:25The Serbs see the secret water source, then they are bombed in the newspaper.
12:28I think that's stupid.
12:29Okay, Anja, come on.
12:29Are you really that concerned about who sees your photos?
12:32What is that?
12:32What is the Osmer like?
12:34Osmer?
12:34Osmer?
12:34Osmer?
13:02Osmer?
13:15What Anja's work has achieved, one thing I know for sure, because there has been so much reporting about it.
13:22Bosnia was over, President Clinton and Tony Blair finally said after four and a half years,
13:27We cannot allow this to continue any longer.
13:35The Senid.
13:58Yes
14:07Anja. Anja, please, please stop. Please, Anja.
14:36Hello. Hello. Hello. We've found a baby here. Relatives. No, there's nobody here.
14:59Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah. Ah, ah. Ah, ah, ah. Oh, Jesus.
15:11Oh, Jesus. Hi. Yes? Unfortunately, we can't send someone until tomorrow morning. I'm sorry.
15:24Okay. The Red Cross will send someone tomorrow morning to take care of it.
15:28Have you ever thought about quitting?
15:30What?
15:31Could you just stop like that?
15:34Me? No, never.
15:40And you?
15:41Honestly, I don't know.
15:44I certainly don't want to be running a tank at 40, my friend.
15:47No.
15:59With her, everything might be different.
16:05You are a great photographer, Anja.
16:10But this was never your war.
16:13And this girl will never be your child.
16:23Only briefly.
16:25One moment.
16:36Message 14.
16:39Ceng is here.
16:42Can we meet up sometime soon?
16:45Let's go to Lange together, okay?
16:50Message 15.
16:52Hey, I'm listening. We're having a small party on Saturday.
16:55I bet you told me something exciting.
16:57That's how you do it, right?
17:00Message 16.
17:02Hello Love...
17:03"Homeland," someone once said.
17:05You can't let go when you're gone.
17:08But once you're there, you can't stand them.
17:19Yes, this is Mike Feldman, Associated Press New York.
17:22Are you still with the EPA?
17:24I had a job for you.
17:26Give me a call if you're interested, okay?
17:30OK?
17:32Nice.
17:33OK?
17:34Yes, that's your most beautiful laugh, Gede.
17:38This is my most beautiful one.
17:39I can't help it if I have two.
17:41Go up a little.
17:42Go up.
17:42Yes.
17:43Yes, and now really go for it with fat.
17:45On fat?
17:45Yes.
17:50Do you know what I wanted to say?
17:51Before, I would think that, by the way, the boss's note should not be kept clear.
17:53But their Pili are simply number 1.
17:56I have to start all over again from the bottom.
18:03Also, if you stay here, you can watch the little worm grow up.
18:07Every day.
18:11I can't convince myself anyway.
18:14Anyway, we're here.
18:15We are your home.
18:21We are family.
18:25I have all my sisters with me.
18:28Wait.
18:29Oh.
18:30Oh.
18:31We are obviously a very disturbing live shot there.
18:35That is the World Trade Center, and we have unconfirmed reports this morning
18:38that a plane has crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center.
18:43CNN Center right now is just beginning to work on this story.
18:47Obviously calling our source.
18:48Yeah, now remember, oh my God.
18:52That looks like a second plane.
18:54There was Pondemonium and Panop from the streets around the Trade Center.
19:04The world will never be the same again.
19:07It's like a wake-up call that dispels my doubts.
19:11There is no going back to a normal life.
19:30Hello. This is Anja Nittringhaus.
19:37Yes. I'll take the job.
19:45There was a lot of work to be done after September 11, 2001.
19:50We needed good people like Anja. Her work was outstanding.
19:58The world is a lot that you say goodbye to with the world.
20:08Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt
20:12that the Iraqi regime continues to possess and conceal
20:17some of the most lethal weapons ever devised.
20:22Before the day of horror can come, before it is too late to act,
20:27This danger will be removed.
20:32Excuse me, I'm not convinced.
20:34And I cannot go to the public and say,
20:36well, let's go to war because there are reasons and so on.
20:39And I don't believe in that.
20:47I feared Anja as competition. I hate to admit that.
20:51The New York Times used their photos when they were better than mine.
20:54And that was obviously a problem.
20:56I always thought, oh dear, Anja is here. Disaster.
21:03First Afghanistan, now Iraq.
21:06I want to understand the connections.
21:09EP is my door opener.
21:11My chance to show what's really going on.
21:35I want her, Anja is here.
21:59Subtitles. BR 2018
22:13Thanks.
