Anja Niedringhaus (12 October 1965 – 4 April 2014) was a German photojournalist who worked for the Associated Press. She was the only woman on a team of 11 AP photographers that won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for coverage of the Iraq War.

The 26-year-old Anja Niedringhaus is sitting in a UN Transall plane on the way to Sarajevo. The war has just started in Yugoslavia. Niedringhaus had stubbornly worked on her boss beforehand to report from the war zone in the middle of Europe as a photographer for the European Pressphoto Agency.

00:07Nowhere else is there so much warmth, strength, and courage.
00:43All clear.
00:49Hey, watch your goddamn fire!
01:01How are you doing?
01:04Can you hear me? Hand grenades. The Taliban were behind the wall.
01:09You were lucky. Two soldiers are dead.
01:13You two, pick her up.
01:30Oh!
01:37Telephone ringer
01:39Telephone ringer
01:48Hello?
01:53I'm perfectly fine. I'm okay.
01:57I'll send the pictures right away.
02:02That's just a bad connection.
02:05Yes.
02:07Take care.
02:10It also got a scratch on its head.
02:33What a crap.
02:41Wow.
02:46That's a real surprise.
02:56I didn't know you were in Kabul.
03:00For a few days now.
03:04No further here.
03:06That we were in the same place together.
03:11Come on.
03:17It's a bad time to go out with me.
03:22I heard what happened.
03:31I have to be in Delhi for the Commonwealth Games this week.
03:35You're crazy. You belong back in bed.
03:39You can rule the game.
03:41If IP notices this, I'll be robbed immediately.
03:47I think that would be best.
03:54I can see what's happening here.
03:57Your guardian angel has grown tired of all this.
04:02Perhaps a good time to stop.
04:04Stop?
04:07This free junk from the internet.
04:11The death of newspapers.
04:15What are we supposed to do?
04:21So, I'm okay.
04:22I'm not on the right track.
04:24Doing what I've always wanted to do.
04:30I'm done with it.
04:33I didn't give you a word.
04:36You can't just give up everything.
04:40You can't do anything else.
04:43You can't just stop.
04:46The snipers.
04:51Boundary traps.
04:53Executions filmed live on camera.
04:56You know what?
04:59I really won't have to catch any of that.
05:06The only thing, you know,
05:13which I will miss.
05:19Are you.
05:31You forgot something.
05:51Come on.
05:53Don't cry.
05:58You know me.
05:59I only want to if I'm in a cabin.
06:05Goodbye, Anja.
06:10With him, everyone is gone.
06:13My friend.
06:14My companion on this journey.
06:16My love.
06:31Thank you.
06:32Yes.
06:34Another one.
06:59I'll keep him with me!
07:03Your lucky charm!
07:05Until we meet again!
07:07Images of the wounded or killed are taboo in America.
07:10This soldier, I don't even know his name.
07:13It was difficult to keep my promise.
07:16After half a year, I found him in Virginia.
07:19My photos forced Americans to look again.
07:24Kathy, send me heaven.
07:37I trust her completely.
07:39Nobody knows Afghanistan better than she does.
07:51They were so courageous.
07:55Both.
07:56Kathy and Anja.
07:58They went to places that few dare to go.
08:01Anja admired resilient people.
08:05And I don't know if there are people who are tougher than the Afghans.
08:10One week before the presidential elections, there have been further serious attacks in the Afghan capital, Kabul.
08:40That's so loud!
08:51I'm so tired.
08:56Why are we doing this?
09:04Nothing has changed.
09:07Nothing has affected the people, the country, the women in parliament, nothing.
09:12Anja, stop watching this crap.
09:15It's like Warporn.
09:17We have failed.
09:19I failed.
09:21No.
09:23I thought my pictures would have an effect or change something.
09:29Helping, you know.
09:30But they did.
09:31You are a true Pulitzer Prize winner.
09:36Come on, Kathy.
09:42Why are we doing this?
09:4420 shitty years.
09:49My ass is full of shrapnel.
09:51These images are in my skull.
09:52And what was all this for?
09:53Everything I've seen has made me this way.
10:00Yes, it always looks so selfless.
10:03A shitty drug.
10:05War is an addiction.
10:06And this job gives us permission to be selfish.
10:10Yes, I gave up everything.
10:12Love, friendship, and children.
10:13A normal life, because I was so terribly afraid,
10:16to stifle my own insignificance.
10:18And you and I, for us, the war and the people were just there.
10:21To feel ourselves.
10:23That's not true, Anja.
10:26That's not me.
10:31That's the only thing that doesn't affect me at all anymore.
10:34Nobody cares about people.
10:36I feel numb.
10:40I'm just tired.
10:42Incredibly tired.
10:47I'm just tired.
10:54I'm quite nervous.
10:56That's perfectly normal.
10:59Thanks.
11:01Do you know how unusual such a photo shoot is for a woman in our country?
11:12Afghanistan has a long tradition of hiding its women.
11:16And to hide Burkes behind walls in their villages.
11:20Isn't it a problem if they present themselves to the public like that?
11:25My face is my identity.
11:27How can people believe someone who hides their face?
11:33In this country, you have to be very strong if you are a woman.
11:36We are accepted, but respect is lacking.
11:41We still have a very long fight ahead of us.
11:43That's why I'm doing this.
11:47Therefore, we must win.
11:49Could we remove the armchair?
11:54An educated and modern Afghan woman.
11:59This is what progress feels like.
12:01So.
12:02So.
12:05So.
12:18Wonderful pictures.
12:20I am so grateful.
12:23Really.
12:24Wonderful.
12:25The mere fact that these pictures exist means a great deal to me.
12:29What an honor.
12:30Thank you so much.
12:33Unfortunately, nobody printed it at all.
12:36The international press has only been interested in the attacks of the last few days.
12:42I wanted to show your courage to the whole world.
12:44I'm sorry.
12:46Why?
12:47You don't need to feel sorry for yourself.
12:49This isn't about me.
12:52What the Taliban don't want are images of people taking their fate into their own hands.
13:00People who are not afraid of violence.
13:05If nobody wants to print my pictures and nobody learns about her struggle, my work becomes meaningless.
13:12I can't say anything about your work.
13:17But you can always go home and sleep safely in your own bed.
13:22Far removed from all violence.
13:26But what about us?
13:28Our fight never ends.
13:30Not only because friends were kidnapped, raped, and murdered.
13:34We have no other choice.
13:36I've never cared about having a safe bed.
13:39Okay, then show that.
13:41Show the world that Afghans are fighting back against terrorism.
13:46Give the nameless a story.
13:49Give a face to the invisible.
13:51Madam Member of Parliament, we recognize our profession.
13:56There are old people up there in the mountains, almost at the border, who are voting for the first time in their
14:02Life.
14:03Men as old as the mountains themselves stand up and go to vote.
14:08They don't even know what democracy is.
14:11But they understand very well what peace and freedom mean.
14:18Believe me, we will not defeat the Taliban if only the capital city votes.
14:23But they lose when there is a nationwide election.
14:26Oh, excuse me.
14:29Sorry.
14:30Yes.
14:41I can't imagine any woman finding that great.
14:44Absolutely a male invention.
14:52Sometimes I think you are afraid to see the contempt in women's eyes.
14:58Is this really the right road?
15:01These are the only ones available here.
15:10Hello, Melanie.
15:12What?
15:15No, I can't hear you very well.
15:17Why?
15:19No fear.
15:20We are driving in the middle of a large convoy of UN election observers, which is being escorted by the military.
15:27What? Which convoy?
15:28Of course we will.
15:31Yes.
15:32Thanks.
15:33Many times.
15:35Oh God.
15:39You know, only the beginning costs money.
15:42We're going on a road trip.
15:44We're driving all over the country, right down to the very last province.
15:48One month?
15:49I do not know yet.
15:50Maybe a year.
15:52We're driving an Uphra there.
15:54Clear.
16:00Cover your faces quickly.
16:05Shit.
16:08Faster, faster.
16:09I can't.
16:10I can't go any faster.
16:13Shit.
16:15Hide the cameras.
16:19.
16:19.
16:19.
16:19.
16:19Go right now! Go, go through the door!
16:22Go through the door, go through the door.
16:24Go through the door! Go through the door!
16:26Go out the door.
16:27Go through the door, go through the door.
16:51Go back, it's not working, it won't start.
16:58Here, take this
17:12now say it again
17:19a
17:27a
17:29a
17:31a
17:55It is beautiful.
18:03I have a feeling.
18:22Afghanistan. I love you. Your warmth. Your strength. Your courage.
18:53Yes I love you.
18:57Yes I love you.
19:00Yes I love you.
