Start a simple, satisfying square with the Merry-Go-Round crochet technique, worked in continuous spiral rounds and demonstrated here with jumbo yarn and a 15mm hook. The pattern begins with a magic ring, then builds with repeating single crochet and chain spaces that form clear corners as the square grows.

This step-by-step crochet tutorial shows how to read the pattern as you go, when to treat a chain two as a corner, and how the flat sides develop between the turning points. It’s a practical guide for making a rug, a blanket, or any larger project that uses the same continuous-round structure. The video also explains how to stop when your piece reaches the size you want and how to finish neatly at the end.

If you enjoy crochet tutorials, rug patterns, blanket patterns, and easy home decor projects, this lesson offers a calm, repeatable method that is easy to follow once the rhythm clicks. It’s a helpful watch for crafters looking for jumbo yarn crochet, spiral crochet, square crochet patterns, and beginner-friendly step-by-step instruction.

00:08Hi everyone! Today I'm going to show you how I do what I call the Merry-Go-Round
00:15crochet technique. I'll be demonstrating that with this really super bulky,
00:22actually it's jumbo, jumbo yarn and with a huge 15 millimeter hook. So let's get
00:31started. This pattern will be worked in a continuous spiral and the only time
00:41you're going to join a round is at the very end when you're finishing the last
00:48round that you have. All right, so what you're going to do is start with a magic
00:54ring like so and in the magic ring you're going to chain one there's my chain one
01:11then single crochet and chain two four times. So this is the first time we're
01:19going to single crochet, chain two, one, two, single crochet, chain two, one, two,
01:42single crochet, chain two, and here's the last one, single crochet, and chain two, one, two.
02:07All right now at the end you're just going to pull on this little yarn in that we
02:17used to start our magic ring. Just pull it tight there. All right we'll weave this in
02:26at the end then you're not going to join we're going to keep working in the round
02:33all right now for this next row round I mean sorry you're going to find the first
02:42chain two space so this is the first single crochet area then here's that chain
02:50two space just gonna stick my finger in so you can see it I'm going to in that chain
02:57two space I'm going to single crochet chain two let's do this step by step so
03:05single crochet chain two and then single crochet chain one all right now find the
03:23next chain two in that next chain two space you're going to repeat so we're
03:34gonna do a single crochet chain two one and two single crochet
03:50chain one chain two single crochet chain two single crochet chain two single crochet
04:17chain one chain one chain one and last time here's that chain two single crochet chain two
04:26chain two space so in that space do the single crochet chain two and single crochet
04:47chain two chain one and then you're going to do a single crochet chain one and then you're going to
04:49see a square
04:54a somewhat square kind of form and it'll get clearer as we keep working so we just finished round two
05:02now let's go to the third round what you're going to do is find that chain two space right here
05:12oops hold on I just did a single crochet I forgot to chain one at the end there
05:16chain one okay so in that chain two space that's actually going to be the corner space
05:24so every time you see a chain two that is the corner of your square there's going to be four
05:32corners of the square
05:34obviously so in this first chain two space you're going to single crochet
05:45chain two single crochet chain one
05:55that brings us to the next part which is actually a chain one space you see that it goes on
06:03the top of
06:03the square that part is not a corner so instead of doing two chains two chains in there you're just
06:12going to single crochet in there and chain one okay and then you see in this next space
06:25in the corner you're going to insert your single crochet do two chains that helps make them a corner single
06:38crochet
06:44do one chain there you go and now we've come to the other side of that square in this chain
06:53one space
06:53all you do is a single crochet and then a chain one next you come to that chain two space
07:03insert the single crochet
07:07chain two
07:14single crochet
07:21chain one
07:22chain one all right
07:26and let's keep going to the end there
07:31so after you chain one you see this chain one space just one single crochet in there
07:39single crochet
07:42single crochet in that chain two space then you do that corner with two chains
07:49and single crochet in that same spot
07:56all right
07:58chain one
08:00single crochet in the in the chain one space
08:04and chain one single crochet in the corner
08:14chain two
08:18single crochet in the same corner
08:21and i'm kind of hopping from the round three to round four now
08:26um as you keep going you're going to notice that you're working in a spiral
08:35and you've got a square shape going on
08:38so if i hide this tail end here let me just pull it in
08:43it'll be easier to see
08:51all right so here's what i have so far
08:54just gonna stretch it on the ground a little bit
08:58and if i keep going around i will be making my square bigger and bigger
09:03i'm gonna go around a few more times and i'll show you how you can finish your square off by
09:11um
09:12fastening off
09:13okay so bear with me for just a little bit more i just want to make the square a little
09:18bigger so
09:19it's easier to see
09:21if you're still trying to figure out um the repetitive part of this pattern um let me help you out
09:28and
09:29let's go through for another round
09:32so here you have a chain one space
09:36it's not the corner of the square so you're just going to insert a single crochet
09:43and do a chain
09:46in this chain one space not a corner you're going to just do a single crochet
09:53and a chain
09:56oh look we've come to a corner of the square so in here you're going to do that single crochet
10:05chain two
10:16all right corner made there's my corner let me go through this side
10:25we're on the flat side of the square so just chain one
10:31single crochet in this chain one space
10:37chain one
10:40single crochet in this chain one space
10:45chain one
10:47oh look we are at the corner so we're gonna single crochet
10:52chain two
10:57single crochet
11:04and there you have it you've got another oops there's another corner made
11:11um i'm gonna come over to this side
11:15and i'll show you how to fasten off on this corner
11:21so let's
11:22make our way over chain one
11:26single crochet
11:30this is some huge yarn and i'm
11:35trying to wrangle it right now
11:39all right now chain one
11:43and oh look we've come to this corner
11:49so when you reach let's say you're satisfied with how large your square is
11:57so i'm looking at this and i'm thinking oh i'd like it to be about this size i don't want
12:02it to get any bigger
12:04so once you're feeling or thinking that way you're gonna fasten off
12:09to do so you're gonna slip stitch to join the yarn in one of the four corners okay
12:18so i'm gonna finish off here with a single crochet
12:24oops
12:26actually i'm sorry not not with a slip stitch join you're gonna do just a single crochet join
12:32and after you do that single crochet in the end um you can just cut off your yarn here and
12:40pull it
12:43pull it out weave in the ends and you've got a nice little square made
12:51you can use this to make a rug you can use this to make a blanket whatever you'd like
12:58and um if you check out or both sides look really pretty so you can check out the um
13:07the pattern and the stitch and if you'd like a written pattern feel free to hop over to my blog
