Welcome to the second session of our foundational course in Biblical Textual Criticism. In this lecture, we dissect the material and paleographical environment of ancient manuscripts to understand the mechanical genesis of textual variants.
We explore the physical mediums that carried the New Testament text—from the early Nile-Delta papyrus sheets (like P45 and P46) whose fibers often caused visual slips of the eye, to the monumental 4th-century transition to premium animal parchment and vellum under Emperor Constantine, which produced golden witnesses like Codex Vaticanus and Codex Sinaiticus. Furthermore, we examine the evolution of Greek scripts, contrasting the formal, block-letter Majuscule (Uncial) script written in continuous form (Scriptio Continua) with the later, efficient medieval Minuscule (Cursive) script. Understanding these tangible writing surfaces and shifting alphabets is essential for tracing scribal behaviors, decoding palimpsests, and restoring the text's pristine purity.

Through this channel, we aim to simplify a complex specialty, Biblical criticism of the New Testament, by presenting core concepts and practical issues. Hoping to see your active participation, comments, and fruitful discussions.
